TRAINING YARD

Adrian waited until the house was silent.

It took hours. The servants finished their evening rounds, the last lamps were extinguished, and the corridors filled with the particular darkness of a noble estate at midnight—thick, velvet, absolute. He lay on his bed fully dressed, staring at the ceiling, counting the minutes until the last footsteps faded.

[TIME: 11:47 PM.]
[RECOMMENDATION: WAIT UNTIL 12:15 AM. SERVANT ROTATION ENDS AT MIDNIGHT.]
[NOTE: THE TRAINING YARD IS EMPTY BETWEEN 12:15 AND 4:00 AM.]

He waited.

At 12:17, he rose, slipped out of his room, and made his way down the service stairs he’d used to reach the kitchens. The house felt different at night—larger, older, the walls pressing in with the weight of centuries. Portraits of dead Blackthornes watched him from the shadows. Suits of armor stood in alcoves like silent sentinels.

[MAP UPDATED: ROUTE TO TRAINING YARD CONFIRMED.]
[WARNING: TWO SERVANTS ACTIVE. ONE IN THE KITCHEN. ONE ON THE SECOND FLOOR EAST WING.]
[RECOMMENDATION: AVOID EAST WING. USE SOUTH CORRIDOR.]

He took the south corridor.

The training yard was at the back of the estate, beyond the gardens and past a low stone wall. It was a simple space—packed dirt, wooden practice dummies, a rack of dulled swords, and a few targets for spell practice. In the original novel, the Blackthorne family had trained knights here for generations.

Adrian stepped through the gate and let out a breath he hadn’t realized he’d been holding.

[LOCATION DISCOVERED: BLACKTHORNE TRAINING YARD.]
[STATUS: SECLUDED. LOW VISIBILITY. SUITABLE FOR PRIVATE TRAINING.]
[RECOMMENDATION: BEGIN WITH BASIC MANA EXERCISES.]

He crossed to the center of the yard and stood there, hands at his sides, looking up at the moon.

Alright, he thought. Let’s see what I’m working with.

[STATUS: MANA CORE — ANALYSIS.]
Rank: Mana Initiate
Core Status: Unstable (External Pressure Detected)
Mana Capacity: Low (Sealed — Estimated 3% Accessible)
Control: Poor (Original Host Never Trained)
Stability: Fluctuating

[NOTE: THE INSTABILITY IS NOT A FLAW. IT IS THE SEAL. YOUR MOTHER’S POWER IS PRESSING AGAINST IT FROM WITHIN. IF THE SEAL BREAKS, THE POWER WILL BE RELEASED—BUT THE PROCESS MAY BE DANGEROUS.]

Dangerous how?

[SYSTEM RESPONSE: UNKNOWN. PREVIOUS HOSTS WITH SEALED PRIMORDIAL POWER HAVE EXPERIENCED EXTREME PHYSICAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL REACTIONS UPON AWAKENING. PREPARATION IS RECOMMENDED.]

Great. So I’m a bomb with a fraying fuse.

He raised his right hand and focused.

The books had described mana manipulation in detail—the sensation of reaching inward, of finding the core of power that every mage carried, of drawing it out and shaping it into something useful. The original Adrian had done this exactly twice in his life, both times under a tutor’s supervision, both times resulting in failure.

Here goes nothing.

He closed his eyes and reached.

For a long moment, nothing happened.

Then he felt it—a flicker, deep in his chest, like a candle flame guttering in a draft. He grasped at it, tried to pull it upward, tried to shape it into something.

[WARNING: MANA CONTROL FAILING.]
[ERROR: CORE PRESSURE INCREASING.]
[RECOMMENDATION: ABORT EXERCISE.]

Adrian didn’t abort.

He pushed harder.

The flicker became a spark. The spark became a flame. The flame surged up through his chest and into his arm and out through his palm in a blast of blue-white light that illuminated the entire training yard.

[WARNING: MANA SURGE DETECTED.]
[WARNING: SEAL STRESS — 4%.]
[WARNING: CONTROL LOST.]

The light exploded outward.

Adrian was thrown backward. He hit the ground hard, the breath knocked out of him, his vision swimming with afterimages. The world spun. Somewhere above him, he heard something crack—wood, maybe, or stone—and then a shower of debris pattered down around him.

He lay there for a long moment, staring up at the sky, gasping for air.

[STATUS UPDATE: INJURY — MINOR.]
[RECOMMENDATION: REMAIN STILL. RECOVER.]
[NOTE: THE SURGE WAS NOT CAUSED BY YOUR MANA. IT WAS CAUSED BY THE SEAL REACTING TO YOUR ATTEMPT.]

What?

He pushed himself up on his elbows. The training dummy nearest to him had been obliterated—splinters of wood scattered across the yard, the post itself reduced to a blackened stub. The ground around it was scorched in a perfect circle, the dirt fused into glass at the center.

Adrian stared at it.

I did that?

[ANALYSIS: THE BLAST WAS NOT PRODUCED BY YOUR ACCESSIBLE MANA. IT WAS PRODUCED BY A FRACTION OF THE SEALED POWER ESCAPING WHEN THE SEAL WAS STRESSED.]
[ESTIMATED OUTPUT: 0.3% OF TOTAL SEALED POWER.]
[NOTE: IF THE SEAL WERE TO BREAK ENTIRELY, THE RESULTING RELEASE WOULD BE CATASTROPHIC.]

Adrian sat up fully, his heart pounding.

Catastrophic how?

[SYSTEM RESPONSE: UNKNOWN. BUT BASED ON THE STRESS PATTERNS, A FULL RELEASE WOULD LIKELY DESTROY EVERYTHING WITHIN A ONE-MILE RADIUS.]

He stared at the scorched circle on the ground.

One mile.

I’m carrying enough power to destroy a mile of anything around me, and I can’t even control it.

[RECOMMENDATION: TRAIN CONTROLLED RELEASE. LEARN TO MANAGE THE PRESSURE WITHOUT TRIGGERING A SURGE.]
[QUEST GENERATED: SEAL MANAGEMENT]
Objective: Learn to control the sealed power without causing a catastrophic release.
Reward: 500 Fate Points.
Bonus: +200 Fate Points if you achieve partial control within one month.
Failure Penalty: Accidental detonation; potential death; potential destruction of property.

Adrian read the quest twice.

One month to get this under control.

He stood up, brushed the dirt off his clothes, and looked at the destroyed dummy.

Fine.

Let’s try again.

The second attempt was more careful.

He didn’t reach for the core this time. He didn’t try to pull mana upward or shape it into anything. Instead, he sat down cross-legged in the middle of the yard and did what Mirren had told him to do: he breathed.

In through the nose. Out through the mouth. Slow and steady and patient.

[STATUS: MEDITATION — EFFECTIVE.]
[NOTE: YOUR BREATHING IS SLOWING YOUR HEART RATE. THE SEAL IS STABILIZING.]

He sat there for what felt like hours, feeling the pressure in his chest shift and settle. It didn’t go away—it couldn’t go away, not while the seal was still holding—but it became manageable. Less like a bomb waiting to explode and more like a tide that he could feel without being swept away by.

[SEAL STRESS: 4% → 3%.]
[NOTE: MINDFULNESS IS EFFECTIVE. CONTINUE.]

When he finally opened his eyes, the moon had moved and the night had grown colder.

He stood, stretched, and raised his hand again.

Slowly this time.

He reached inward—gently, carefully, the way you’d approach a wounded animal—and found the flicker of accessible mana. He didn’t pull at it. He didn’t force it. He just waited.

The flicker grew.

It spread upward through his chest, into his arm, and settled in his palm like a pool of water finding its level. He could feel it there, waiting, patient.

[MANA CONTROL: PARTIAL SUCCESS.]
[NOTE: YOU ARE ACCESSING APPROXIMATELY 2% OF THE SEALED POWER. IT IS STABLE.]
[RECOMMENDATION: RELEASE IT SLOWLY.]

Adrian released.

A thin stream of blue-white light flowed from his palm and struck the ground a few feet away. It didn’t explode. It didn’t surge. It simply existed. A steady stream of light, controlled and calm.

[QUEST UPDATE: SEAL MANAGEMENT.]
Progress: 15%.
Note: You have achieved partial control. Continue practicing.

Adrian let the light fade.

His hand was shaking. His heart was pounding. But he was grinning.

I did it.

I actually did it.

[SYSTEM NOTE: FATE DEVIATION: +2.5%.]
[NOTE: THIS IS THE FIRST TIME YOU HAVE USED MAGIC. THE ORIGINAL ADRIAN NEVER ACHIEVED THIS LEVEL OF CONTROL.]

Good, Adrian thought. That’s the point.

He spent the next hour practicing—drawing mana, shaping it, releasing it in controlled bursts. By the time the sky began to lighten in the east, he could hold a stable light for nearly a minute and launch a small bolt of force at a target without blowing it to splinters.

[MANA PERCEPTION: LEVEL 1 → LEVEL 2.]
[MANA CONTROL: LEVEL 1 → LEVEL 2.]
[SKILL UNLOCKED: MANA BOLT (LEVEL 1).]

[QUEST COMPLETE: SEAL MANAGEMENT (PARTIAL).]
Reward: 200 Fate Points (partial completion).
Bonus: +50 Fate Points (achieved within one week).
Current Fate Points: 1,950.

Adrian lowered his hand and let out a long, slow breath.

Not bad for a dead man.

He turned to leave—and stopped.

Someone was standing at the gate of the training yard.

[WARNING: UNAUTHORIZED PRESENCE DETECTED.]
[INDIVIDUAL IDENTIFIED: DARIUS BLACKTHORNE.]
[STATUS: OBSERVING. ARMS CROSSED. EXPRESSION UNREADABLE.]

Adrian’s heart lurched.

How long has he been there?

Darius stepped forward into the yard. He was dressed in a dark coat and riding boots, as though he’d been up for hours. His silver-grey eyes swept across the scorched circle on the ground, the destroyed dummy, the splinters scattered across the dirt.

Then they settled on Adrian.

“That,” Darius said quietly, “is not the magic of a Mana Initiate.”

[QUEST GENERATED: THE BROTHER’S WITNESS]
Objective: Convince Darius that what he saw was nothing unusual.
Reward: 300 Fate Points.
Failure Penalty: Increased suspicion; potential exposure.
Hidden Objective: Unknown.

Adrian kept his voice level.

“I’ve been practicing.”

“Practicing.” Darius’s voice was flat. “For a week. In secret. At midnight. In the training yard.”

“Yes.”

“You destroyed a training dummy with a single spell.” Darius gestured at the scorched circle. “That’s not an Initiate-level spell. That’s not even a Practitioner-level spell. That’s the kind of output I’d expect from a Spell Knight.”

Adrian said nothing.

“I’ve known you your whole life,” Darius continued. “I’ve watched you fail every magical examination you’ve ever taken. I’ve watched tutors give up on you. I’ve watched Father pull you out of the academy once already because you couldn’t keep up with the other students.”

He’s right, Adrian thought. The original Adrian failed everything.

“So,” Darius said, “either you’ve been hiding your true strength this entire time—which would make you a liar and a schemer of the highest order—or something has changed.”

He stepped closer.

“Which is it?”

[SKILL CHECK: PERSUASION — LEVEL 1.]
[DIFFICULTY: EXTREME (DARIUS IS INTELLIGENT AND SUSPICIOUS).]
[RESULT: LIKELY FAILURE.]

Adrian’s mind raced.

If I tell him the truth, he’ll think I’m mad.

If I tell him a lie, he’ll see through it.

If I tell him nothing, he’ll assume the worst.

“There’s a third option,” Adrian said.

Darius raised an eyebrow. “What’s that?”

“I don’t know what’s happening to me.”

Darius studied him for a long moment.

“Go on.”

“I woke up three days ago feeling… different. Stronger. Clearer. I don’t know why. I don’t know how. I just know that the magic I’ve been trying to cast for years suddenly… works.” Adrian gestured at the destroyed dummy. “I came out here tonight because I wanted to know what I could actually do. I didn’t expect that.”

[SKILL CHECK: PERSUASION — PARTIAL SUCCESS.]
[NOTE: DARIUS IS NOT CONVINCED, BUT HE IS UNCERTAIN. THE HONESTY IN YOUR VOICE IS REGISTERED.]

Darius stared at him.

“Convenient,” he said at last. “An awakening just before the academy year. Just before the succession is decided.”

“I know how it looks.”

“You don’t know the half of it.” Darius turned and walked toward the gate. He paused there, looking back. “I’m going to find out what’s really happening. And when I do, I’m going to be ready.”

He disappeared into the darkness.

Adrian stood alone in the training yard, the first light of dawn creeping over the wall, and let out a breath he hadn’t realized he’d been holding.

[QUEST COMPLETE: THE BROTHER’S WITNESS.]
Reward: 300 Fate Points.
Bonus: +50 Fate Points (Maintained Cover).
Current Fate Points: 2,300.

[WARNING: DARIUS IS NOW ACTIVELY INVESTIGATING YOU.]
[NOTE: HE WILL NOT STOP UNTIL HE FINDS THE TRUTH.]
[RECOMMENDATION: PREPARE COUNTERMEASURES.]

Adrian turned and walked back toward the house.

Four months until the academy, he thought. And I just showed my brother that I’m not the weakling he thought I was.

Good.

Let him watch.

He reached his room, closed the door, and collapsed onto the bed with his boots still on.

He was asleep in minutes.
