Chapter 4 - If I Don't Come Closer, How Can I Hit You?

Dream hall was brimming with guests from the high class. This party was an elite event meant for the aristocrats of Eastside.

When Anita had gotten dressed for the evening, she hadn't expected to see a sleek white Toyota Highlander stop at her doorstep.

Though it was a car worth about forty thousand dollars, it stood out like a high end luxury car glistening in the night.

When Jake stepped down wearing a grey tailored suit, she almost forgot to breathe. He looked too stunning with a strong aura one couldn't ignore.

When he was working at the oak house she had found him handsome, but now he looked twice as handsome as he used to.

Anita was even more surprised when she noticed that his suit was from a well known brand, a classic Armani suit that fit him perfectly.

"This car..." Anita began questioningly.

Jake was quick to reply.

"Ah, I borrowed the clothes and car from a friend. Since you asked me to go to such a high class party with you, I don't want to embarrass you by appearing in an inferior car and attire."

Experiences teach us life lessons, Jake had learned after what Diana did to him. His love and dedication for her had not been enough to keep her, in the end she had gone after money and status. Jake decided if he would have other women around him, he would definitely not pick one who was greedy for wealth and position.

Anita didn't say anything, she just sat in the car and they drove away.

When they arrived at Dream Hall, Anita began to greet people she was familiar with among the guests. There were so many important people in attendance and it was a chance to network in high society.

"Look who it is, oak house company's biggest gold digger." Ron sauntered over dressed in super expensive luxury suit. He looked like a second generation heir who squandered his family money carelessly.

A few of his friends laughed behind him.

"I didn't know men could be gold diggers too." One of them remarked.

"Well, this guy here is a live example. Shameless men like him who would be kept men to women for money, poor Anita here has fallen victim to him."

"Ron, what are you saying? Can you stop embarrassing us?" Anita felt humiliated at the number of eyes beginning of turn in their direction.

"Why? Am I lying? This piece of shit over here has been clinging to the Managing director of oak house because he's a pathetic poor bastard!"

A small distance among the crowd, Diana linked arms with Barry. She noticed a small commotion coming from not far away and her eyes widened in surprise.

When she heard what Ron said about Jake a derisive look showed on her face coupled with a hint of disgust.

"So this is what you're up to now? Clinging onto a rich woman just to elevate yourself." Diana shook her head to herself, unable to bear the fact that she was ever married to Jack, "I'm so lucky I escaped from that trashy life with you."

She didn't even want Barry to see the embarrassing scenario going on with her ex husband, so she pulled him away from the commotion so it wouldn't ruin her image.

"Miss Anita, a kept man will only squander your money, it's best to choose a man who will spoil you by spending on you." Ron's friend remarked.

Anita felt her face redden in embarrassment, just now she'd been talking to Mr Smith, a very important potential investor of the oak house, the man was already beginning to look at her strangely.

"Anita, I caused you this embarrassment. Would you like me to leave?" Jake asked testingly. He'd noticed how her expression was beginning to change due to the conversations around.

However she shocked him by shaking her head, "You're my plus one to this event, why should I make you leave because of what everyone is saying?"

Jake was surprised, he knew the amount of commission she stood to receive along with a promotion if she managed to bring in Mr Smith's investment, but even though the man looked displeased at her she chose to still keep him around?

A smile lifted Jake's lips slightly.

"Ron, what's your problem and why do you keep bringing yourself into my matters? If I decide to have a kept man, that's on me. He can squander my entire pay check if he likes, that still doesn't concern you. I'd appreciate it if you could stay out of my life." Anita's voice was filled with displeasure, it was evident she absolutely despised Ron at this point but he didn't care, he would change her opinion of him.

Ron merely smiled as he turned to the wealthy investor, "What do you think about this Mr Smith?"

The investor had a deep frown on his face.

"A managing director at a big company going around with a male prostitute, why would I invest in a company that would ruin my reputation with something so low and disgusting?" The man spoke with repulsion on his face.

Anita was crestfallen, "But Mr Smith..."

"Enough!" The man said then walked away immediately.

Ron smirked. Of course this was part of what he wanted to happen, he wouldn't let go of the fact that Jake had called him an annoying fly.

"Luckily I have plans for making an investment soon, Anita why don't you make your pitch for me personally? I might just decide to put that money on oak house." Ron proposed.

Anita thought for a long time feeling torn. If she didn't find an investor, the promotion she'd worked hard for would be gone completely.

"Will you really listen to my pitch?" She asked.

"Of course I will, just come over to my private room upstairs, I'll be really good to you." Ron lowered his voice as he rubbed his hand on Anita's fair arm before he left with his group of friends.

"Anita, why do you need to find an investor so bad?" Jake asked.

"Actually, I have this problem...I really need the bonus at work, otherwise I might..." She wanted to tell Jake about her personal problems but stopped herself, why should she burden him with those serious talks?

"If you really need it, I can help you."

Anita looked at Jake's face and laughed. She found his words amusing. "Thanks for trying to cheer me up. I'll just go pitch to Ron, I shouldn't disregard any opportunity just because I don't like him."

Jake was just a secretary, he couldn't possibly have the kind of money needed for the investment. Though she would much rather take help from Jake than Ron, she knew Jake wouldn't be able to help her.

Jake sighed when he watched her enter the elevator that would take her to Ron's private room.

"Will I just let you have your way when I have a score to settle with you?"

When Anita entered the private room, it was filled with the smell of cigarettes. Ron laughed with his friends when he saw her come in. He patted his thigh and said, "Why talk from so far away? Come tell me about your pitch here."

If she could, Anita would slap him so hard, but she clenched her fist and walked over.

Just when she was about to give in and sit on his lap like he instructed, someone suddenly burst into the room.

"Who...?" When Ron saw Jake at the door he rolled his eyes.

"So the kept man can't stay away right? Since you've brought yourself here, then I'll definitely enjoy this."

Ron stood up and grabbed Jake then smacked him across the face.

Jake wiped a streak of blood on this side of his lips but no pain showed on his face. Instead he smirked.

"Ron Ramsey, first you're tricking my employee with the fake promise of an investment, now you assaulted me?"

"What...did you just say your employee?" Ron laughed so loudly it echoed in the room, "Did you get high before coming here? What do you think you are, the CEO of oak house? What a joke."

"You'll change your words in the next sixty seconds." Jake said.

"How about I make your face resemble a pig's head in the next sixty seconds." Ron said before signalling to his friends who rushed over to circle Jake.

There was one thing Jake possessed despite the fact that he'd been poor, fighting skills. However he'd sworn never to raise his hand at anyone first. Hence he stood still as each one of Ron's friends sent one hit to his face after another. When he'd taken a punch from each one of them, his eyes seemed to suddenly become sharper.

"This is nice, it's been so long since I've last let off some steam." Jake said smilingly.

Was this guy mad? He was beaten yet he had the guts to smile.

But before they could voice out their thoughts he'd moved. It happened like a flash before their eyes. The next thing they felt was pain and the powerful sound of a fist colliding with flesh.

Jake only sent a punch each, but in the next sixty seconds they were all sprawled to the floor, none of them moving as if they'd completely lost consciousness. One hit had been so powerful enough to knock each guy out.

Ron watched with wide eyes.

What just happened?

Anita was also shocked.

Was this still the same Jake who was nice and smiled to everyone? In this moment he seemed to have transformed into a monster as he approached Ron.

"You...stay away from me! Don't come any closer..." Ron began to step back frightfully. Though he was a prideful man he couldn't hold on to his pride when he'd seen his friends taken out in a matter of seconds.

Jake flexed his wrist, "If I don't come closer, how can I get to hit you?"

Ron screamed. Before Jake could raise his hand someone had rushed over to the private room.

"Mr Jacob Watson, is Mr Jacob Watson here?" The man who'd rushed in called looking around the room.

Anita knew this person. He was Gilbert, the secretary of oak house's mysterious CEO who has 55% shares of the oak house company. Why was he looking for Jake so desperately? She pointed over to Jake, "That's him."

The man sighed in relief and bowed to Jake. "I'm sorry for coming late Mr Watson, everyone is waiting for your introduction as the CEO of oak house."

Anita couldn't believe her ears.

Ron went silently stiff on the floor.
