The Shadow Of Crusade

The apocalyptic roar of the chemical fire trapped inside the Black Wolf Pass was deafening. The air warped and shivered under the intense heat, turning the canyon into a literal crucible of melting iron and ash.

But for Chieftain Ba Yan, the heat was nothing compared to the freezing dread that suddenly gripped his heart.

Through the thick, roiling pillars of black smoke, he watched the golden and blue light of a double cultivation breakthrough fade from Yan Zheng’s body. The young prince stood at the edge of the blazing cliff, his dark hair billowing in the superheated updraft. He wasn't breathing heavily, nor was he hiding behind a protective Qi barrier. The raw, dense physical foundation of his Level 5 breakthrough simply absorbed the heat as if it were a mild summer breeze.

Then, Yan Zheng extended his right hand, the dark silver Ring of the Shadow Commander flashing with a blinding, midnight-purple light.

"System," Yan Zheng’s voice resonated through the canyon, completely bypassing the roar of the flames. "Summon all eight units."

Beneath the blazing inferno of the canyon floor, the shadows cast by the burning debris did not disappear. Instead, they expanded violently, defying the light of the fire. Eight distinct pools of pitch-black, liquid darkness rippled across the earth.

Silently, efficiently, eight towering figures clad in unpolished midnight-steel and tattered black linen rose from the void.

*Clang. Clang. Clang.*

The sound of their heavy iron boots striking the stones echoed in perfect unison. Eight pairs of sapphire-blue flames ignited behind their faceless visors, their smoky trench swords bleeding a cold, black vapor that actually began to freeze the burning oil around their feet.

Up on the ridges, the Ironcliff guards stopped cheering. They stared down into the valley, their breath catching in their throats. To them, Prince Yan Zheng no longer looked like a mortal ruler defending his borders—he looked like a supreme commander of the underworld, deploying his personal legion of death.

"What... what kind of sorcery is this?!" Ba Yan roared, his hands trembling as he gripped his massive broadsword.

He was a Level 18 Bronze Meridian master. He had fought against grand sects and high-tier cultivators, but he had never seen anyone summon eight mid-tier Qi Refinement entities from pure shadow without a single drop of spiritual array activation or talisman burning.

"Kill them! Put out the fire and kill them all!" Ba Yan screamed at his remaining commanders, his voice laced with uncharacteristic panic.

The surviving five thousand tribal warriors, terrified by both the fire and the appearance of the dark entities, tried to rally. A group of two hundred elite bronze-armored heavy infantry formed a desperate phalanx, lowering their long spears and charging toward the eight shadow soldiers.

Yan Zheng looked down at the charging formation, his expression completely cold. He flicked his wrist, pointing his index finger toward Ba Yan.

"Annihilate them," he ordered.

The eight Shadow-Guards moved simultaneously. They didn't shout a battle cry. They didn't make a single sound. They simply melted into the earth, disappearing into the shadows cast by the very fire that was burning the tribal army.

"Where did they go?!" a tribal commander yelled, spinning his head around.

*Puff!*

A smoky black blade erupted directly through the commander's throat from behind. A Shadow-Guard materialized seamlessly from his own shadow, twisted the blade to sever his neck, and then dissolved back into the dark before the surrounding spears could even thrust forward.

What followed was a masterclass in asymmetrical warfare.

The eight Level 3 Qi Refinement shadows exploited their perfect camouflage trait to its absolute limit inside the chaotic, smoke-filled canyon. They reappeared, executed a target with a flawless, high-velocity strike, and vanished before a counter-attack could be launched. The dense tribal formation became their greatest disadvantage; every shadow cast by a warrior was a doorway for an executioner.

"Ahhh! They're in the shadows! Destroy your own shadows!" a soldier screamed in pure madness, driving his spear into the dirt trying to hit the dark pools.

In less than five minutes, the two hundred elite infantrymen were reduced to a pile of headless corpses. The remaining thousands of tribal warriors completely broke, throwing down their shields and trampling each other in a frantic, desperate stampede back toward the northern entrance of the pass.

[Your Shadow-Guard has slain...]

Yan Zheng ignored the scrolling blue screen. He took a single step forward, walking right off the edge of the cliff.

*BOOM!*

He slammed into the canyon floor, the immense physical weight of his Level 5 Strength creating a massive shockwave that parted the sea of fire around him. He didn't draw a weapon. He simply walked through the flames, his gaze locked entirely on Chieftain Ba Yan, who was frantically trying to turn his massive war beast around to escape.

"Ba Yan," Yan Zheng’s deep voice rumbled, appearing directly behind the Chieftain’s mount with an explosive burst of Agility. "You said my royal bloodline was nothing but trash. Why are you running from a piece of garbage?"

Ba Yan’s eyes dilated in absolute terror. Driven by pure survival instinct, he spun around on his saddle, channeling 100% of his Level 18 Bronze Meridian Qi into his broadsword. The blade glowed with a blinding, explosive brown energy as he swung it down toward Yan Zheng's head with enough force to shatter a mountain ridge.

"Die, you freak!" Ba Yan screamed.

Yan Zheng didn't flinch, didn't dodge, and didn't use Qi. He simply raised his bare left hand, his upgraded muscles tightening until they were denser than diamond.

*CLANG!!!*

The massive, Qi-infused broadsword slammed directly into Yan Zheng’s open palm. A violent shockwave of brown energy exploded outward, shattering the cobblestones for ten meters around them—but Yan Zheng’s hand didn't move a single millimeter. Not a single scratch appeared on his skin. His fingers slowly closed around the glowing steel, the sheer raw physical pressure of his grip instantly cracking the high-grade weapon.

"Is this the absolute peak of your Bronze Meridian cultivation?" Yan Zheng asked softly, looking up into the Chieftain's pale, sweating face. "How disappointing."

Yan Zheng clenched his right fist, pulling it back. He had four unallocated stat points sitting in his status menu, but he didn't even need them for this. The raw power of Level 5 was already beyond mortal limits.

With a short, explosive thrust, Yan Zheng drove his right fist straight into the chest of Ba Yan's massive war beast.

*BOOM!*

The fist punched cleanly through the beast's thick hide, its muscles, and its ribs, erupting out of its spine in a shower of blood. The massive animal didn't even have time to scream; the sheer kinetic energy of the impact caused its entire upper body to violently explode into a mist of crimson.

Ba Yan was thrown from his disintegrating saddle, crashing heavily onto the bloody snow, his broadsword left behind in Yan Zheng's unbreakable grip.

He scrambled backward on his hands and knees, his face covered in the blood of his mount, staring up at the young prince who stood over him like an ancient, unyielding god of war.

"Mercy..." Ba Yan stammered, his pride as a tribal chieftain completely shattered. "Ironcliff... Ironcliff wins! We will pay tribute! We will become your vassals! Just spare my life!"

Yan Zheng casually tossed the shattered broadsword aside. He raised his foot, positioning his heavy boot directly over the Chieftain’s chest.

"I don't need vassals who only kneel when they're burning," Yan Zheng said calmly.

*CRUNCH.*

With a single, effortless downward stomp, Yan Zheng crushed Ba Yan’s breastplate and heart into the dirt.

  • The Sea Of Fire

The thunderous roar of the avalanche eventually subsided, leaving behind a thick, choking cloud of grey dust and pulverized ice. The southern exit of the Black Wolf Pass was now completely choked by a massive, jagged wall of obsidian rubble, three stories high. Beneath it lay the crushed remnants of the tribal scouting squad.Up on the ridges, the three hundred Ironcliff guards didn't waste a single second."Move! Pour it out! Don't leave a single gap!" Fan Changyu’s voice barked through the freezing air.Soldiers lugged the heavy wooden barrels to the lip of the eastern and western cliffs. With practiced coordination, they smashed the iron rings apart, tipping the barrels forward. Hundreds of gallons of thick, dark seal oil cascaded down the vertical rock faces, veining through the jagged shale and pooling deeply into the narrow canyon floor below. The pungent, heavy scent of fuel quickly filled the pass, masking the smell of blood.Yan Zheng stood atop the newly formed rock barrier,

  • Setting the Trap

The narrow maw of the Black Wolf Pass loomed ahead like the jaws of a frozen beast. Towering cliffs of jagged, black obsidian stone rose hundreds of feet into the gray sky, their steep ledges heavily burdened with layers of unstable winter ice and loose shale.Following Yan Zheng’s precise orders, the three hundred Ironcliff guards had shed their heavy iron tower shields, replacing them with bundles of dry pine wood, pitch, and barrels of highly flammable seal oil pulled from the castle’s emergency reserves. They moved like ghosts through the freezing mist, their spirits high but their movements disciplined."Your Highness, the three detachments are in position," Fan Changyu reported in a low whisper, stepping up to Yan Zheng’s side. She had abandoned her horse at the base of the mountain, her nimble movements showing her own peak Qi Refinement agility as she climbed the rocky terrain."Group one and two have scaled the eastern and western ridges. They have secured the loose shale cli

  • The Ghost Scout

The morning fog hung low over the frozen plains as the three hundred city guards of Ironcliff filed out of the massive iron gates. They were a ragtag assembly, but the dynamic had completely shifted. Dressed in the heavy, steel-plated armor harvested from the defeated Iron-Blood vanguard, their posture was rigid, their expressions hardened. At the front of the column rode Fan Changyu on a white warhorse, her iron sword strapped tightly to her saddle. But every eye in the vanguard was fixed on the young man walking calmly on foot at the very center of the formation.Yan Zheng didn't ride a horse. He walked with a steady, effortless stride that perfectly matched the pace of the galloping cavalry. With every step he took, his feet left deep, heavy prints in the thick snow, a testament to the crushing physical density of his upgraded Strength stat. Behind him, draped in their tattered black linens, the four Shadow Vanguards marched in eerie, flawless synchronization, completely silent."Y
