Kage understood the urgency as he walked toward the car, but a glance over his shoulder revealed Matt still on the phone, his gaze fixed intently on Kage. It sent a cold shiver down Kage’s spine—not fear, but a simmering resentment.

What was Matt plotting? The uncertainty gnawed at him, a dark cloud hovering just out of sight. He didn't hate that Matt might be up to something; he hated that it was something he didn't know about.

John slid into the driver's seat, and Alfie followed in his own car, tailing them as they headed to the nearest five-star restaurant. Kage wouldn't have anything less.

The air was thick with tension, each man lost in his thoughts. Kage focused on the road ahead, the rhythmic thrum of the tires on asphalt matching the rapid beat of his heart.

He thought he had won this case. Was it all a charade for Matt and Clara? She does seem like she knew something. It was just too easy. You know what something is too good to be true, yeah, this case felt extremely too eas

He stood there, listening, waiting for something… anything. He expected the chaotic sounds of children playing, the annoying yet somehow endearing shouts and laughter, the general cacophony that came with a group of kids. But the air was eerily silent. His mind flashed back to Richard's words: “It’s the system we have here.”What kind of system could be so shady as to silence an entire orphanage? He took a few steps, his eyes scanning the surroundings. Turning back, he saw John also looking around, his gaze fixed on Richard's guard. She stood motionless, her eyes speaking volumes. It was as if she wanted to tell Kage something, to implore him to dig deeper, but she couldn't.Kage nodded subtly at John, who immediately understood. John strode off in a different direction, his purposeful gait suggesting he was on a mission."Excuse me! Hey!" Richard called after John, his voice laced with irritation. When John ignored him, Richard turned to Kage, his eyes flashing with a mixture of ange

  • 72: Let them play

Waiting for the evening traffic to subside, Kage nodded almost imperceptibly to the soft French music John had put on the radio. He didn't understand a single word, but he found the melody soothing. It was Saturday, the day of his surprise visit to the orphanage. He was bringing a check as a donation, but he couldn't shake the feeling that he was doing too much. Deep down, he just wanted to see how the children were being treated. He knew the existing health insurance didn't adequately cover their needs, and he wanted to ensure they were safe, healthy, and well cared for.He had deliberately chosen his least conspicuous vehicle, a black BMW X7, hoping it would make him look more like a prospective adoptive parent than a CEO covertly spying on the well-being of children he barely knew.He had this gut feeling, like something wasn't right but he ignored it."Sir?" John's voice cut through his thoughts. He glanced at Kage in the rearview mirror.Kage raised an eyebrow in acknowledgment,

  • 71: Who knows?

It was almost the middle of November. The first two weeks had passed, and now, wrapped in thick blankets, Clara watched the relentless rain streak down her window. It was the heart of the wet season. She thought about her joblessness, about the stagnant state of her life, but a strange sense of calm permeated her. A premonition, almost, that she would find a new job before the end of the month.Just maybe. Maybe she could meet a wealthy man, and he would change her Life. This time she would be more careful not to get someone as useless as Kage and as self destructive as Matt. Such a control freak.Lazily, she stretched and picked up her phone, scrolling through social media until she stumbled upon an update showcasing a luxurious Bali vacation. She sighed, a wistful sound. She remembered her last cancelled trip. Then because of work and that douchebag, Kage. Jobless now, this vacation could be her achievement."Why not try now?" she murmured to herself. She was free from work for the

  • 70: The other woman

"So, Sir, you want to visit Richard Ho's orphanage?" Gina asked, her voice echoing slightly in the spacious office.Kage looked up from the files spread across his desk, his gaze settling on Gina. They had discussed this two days ago. Why the repetition? Was she testing his resolve? Or did she have some other agenda simmering beneath the surface? One eyebrow arched slightly as he held her gaze, a silent question hanging in the air. After a beat, he turned his attention back to the monitor, the glowing screen reflecting in his dark eyes. He had to oversee the training of the new recruits in a matter of minutes."Sir, you didn't say anything about me sending information to them first. Do you want it to be a surprise visit?" she clarified, her tone carefully neutral. The corners of Kage's lips tilted in a barely perceptible smile as he considered her words. Announcing his presence beforehand would allow them to prepare, to present a sanitized version of reality. To him, it felt cruci

The next day, Kage descended the stairs, carefully buttoning his crisp white shirt, the Cotton fabric cool against his skin. He spotted Gina in the kitchen, seated at the island, a large, rectangular package resting beside her. Curiosity tugged at him.As soon as she saw him, she jumped to her feet, her voice a little too eager. "The art piece, Sir. The one you from Julius." She gestured towards the package.Kage nodded, remembering his instructions for her to retrieve it. He hadn't asked if she'd gone alone. He made a mental note to check later.Although he had seen a digital image, he was eager to see the real thing. He walked towards the kitchen island and gestured to Roseanne for the knife she was using to slice vegetables.Roseanne looked at him thoughtfully, her gaze lingering for a moment before she relinquished the knife. She moved closer, watching with quiet interest as he began to carefully open the package. It seemed everyone was curious, including Jackson, John, and even a

  • 68: The invitation

A clear image from the car's engine bay filled the screen. Kage couldn't immediately decipher what he was looking at, but Alfie's agitated phone call had already piqued his interest."So this isn't a 'maybe' situation," Alfie was saying, his voice tight with barely suppressed anger. "This is clear evidence of foul play."He fell silent for a moment, then frantically started typing on his laptop, his fingers flying across the keyboard until he located a video file. He didn't open it, simply forwarded it to Kage. As soon as he ended the call, he dialed Kage's number."What the—" he started, cutting himself off as he heard his own phone ringing behind him.He spun around to see Kage standing there, a bemused expression on his face."You know, you almost scared the shit out of me," Alfie said, forcing a laugh to mask his surprise.Kage chuckled in response as he settled into the empty chair beside Alfie. It was Sunday, and Kage had decided to visit the construction site. He didn't have mu
