The company bus rolled to a stop at the entrance of Emmy Golf Course, its tires crunching softly against the gravel driveway.
Beyond the gates stretched wide fields of trimmed grass. It was indeed beautiful as rumours had it. Karl stood as soon as the doors hissed open. He stepped down first, adjusting the cuff of his jacket as his shoes met the ground. Around him, staff members began filing out, laughter and chatter rising in excitement. For most of them, this was a treat from their boss, Melody. Karl took a look around the field, there was no one in sight. Maybe Ruchie would be coming a little later. Anna stepped down behind him, dressed in a cream-colored golf outfit, visor pushed back as she looked around in awe. Melody followed shortly after, sunglasses already in place as if she were arriving at a red-carpet event instead of a company outing. Caden came last, laughing with two junior staff members. Karl shuts his eyes, that sound of his laughter grinding his gears “Good luck.” Anna offered before walking away with the rest of the staff. Karl's eyes followed her, she really is something. Melody approached him, “Are you looking at her?” Karl glanced at her and then away before walking towards the field. Melody gritted her teeth and stroked right after him. Karl continued to scan the grounds. Golf carts were parked in rows nearby. A few private guests were already warming up near the green. None of them matched what he was looking for. Not yet. They checked in, collected equipment, and were split into groups. Karl barely registered who he’d been paired with. His attention drifted constantly, eyes flicking toward every new face stepping onto the field. Nothing. His jaw tightened slightly. She should be here by now. “Looking for someone?” Karl turned just enough to see Caden approaching, golf club resting casually against his shoulder. His eyes drifted to Karl's empty hands and narrowed. Karl didn’t hesitate. “I’m checking the layout.” Caden smiled faintly. “Since when do you care about golf?” Karl glanced past him, then back. “Since we’re playing.” Caden studied him for a moment longer than necessary. The easy grin slipped before he laughed it off. “Right. Of course.” Karl turned to leave. “What happened between Melody and I..” Karl stopped in his tracks, not again! Are these two trying to force him to feel bad about them cheating?! He turned to face Caden, "Listen, I'm not mad. It was a mistake. Sure.” ‘Whatever fucking makes you sleep at night!’ He groaned internally. “Are you sure?” Karl lifted a brow, was he expecting a thank you instead? “Lets play then.” Caden said, “Golf. That way Melody doesn't feel guilty.” Jarl clenched his fist. He had to puck a moment when he was looking for Ruchie?! “I dont think im going to play.” He said suddenly. “Ypu said you were checking our the perimeter eralie.” Caden questioned. Karl shrugs, "I changed my mind.” he turned to leave. Caden stares at, eyes regarding him in silence. “Ypu seem to be in a hurry to get somewhere.” Caden said lightly, Karl stopped and turned to him fully. “Is there a problem?” “No,” Caden replied quickly. “Just asking.” Karl held his stare for a second longer, and turned away, walking toward the practice area without another word. He knew Caden would be on his ass now, he had to be careful. A sharp scream cut through the air. Every head turned. Including Karl's. Karl turned around just in time to see Melody stumble backward near the edge of a sand trap, her arms flailing as she lost balance. Anna was right beside her but Melody grabbed her by the arm in a bid to gain balance only for their bodies to collide, sending them both down. Melody hit the ground with a cry, clutching her arm. Anna went down harder, her ankle twisting beneath her at an horrifying angle before she cried out. “Melody!” Caden shouted, dropping his club and sprinting toward her. Karl hurried towards Anna without a second thought. She sat on the grass, hands shaking as she tried and failed to stand on her feet. Her breath came in uneven gasps, her face twisted in pain. The staff gathered around Melody, not one person sent a glance at Anna. Karl reached her in seconds. “Don’t move,” he said firmly, crouching in front of her. Her eyes lifted to his, vision blurred with tears. “I..I think I..” “I know,” His hands moved to her ankle gently, it was already swelling and the skin above it red. Caden was kneeling beside Melody, calling for help, demanding ice, his voice drawing attention. Melody clutched his arm dramatically, her face twisted in pain and anger as she stared past him. At Karl. Karl looked away, ignoring her completely. Karl slid one arm beneath Anna’s knees and the other around her back, lifting her carefully. She gasped, fingers curling into his jacket as he stood. “I’ve got you,” he said quietly. Her forehead pressed briefly against his shoulder as she tried to steady her breathing. “I’m sorry,” she whispered. He adjusted his grip and began walking. “Karl!” Caden called, “What the hell bro?! Your girl is hurt too!” Karl stopped and glanced over his shoulder, “You're attending to her no?” He shot back, “Anna is hurt too.” “Still!” Caden snapped, “Melody is in pain! Aren't you going to do something?” Karl ignored him and continued to walk. “Karl, I think you should go attend to Melody..” “And who is going to attend you?” She looked away, tears rolling down her chin now. Her ankle hurts that bad. “I'll be fine. I just..” “Not another word from you..” he warned, his gaze as cold as ice. She swallowed her words immediately. “Where are you taking her?” “To the hospital,” Karl replied without turning. Melody's face twisted in anger. Karl didn't even bother to know where she got hurt! She starts to cry, “Caden…I think I need medical attention too. My arm..” she cries. “Ill get you to the hospital.” Caden lifts her off the ground and out the field. In a corner, Ruchie Emold leaned back on her lounge chair with a disgusted look on her face. “Disgusting..”Latest Chapter
Chapter 20: The Undead
Karl barely felt the weight of the document in his hand as he stepped out of the café. His thumb slid over the corner of the document as if the paper might disappear if he stopped touching it.It was done.Ruchie Emold had signed the agreement. For the first time in weeks, his chest did not feel tight. His hands touched the folder again, he had a chance at his inheritance. Fucking hell, he still couldn't believe it! His hard work had paid off. His phone vibrated in his pocket and he pulled it out. The screen lit up.Anna.His fingers paused mid-reach, he had not heard from her since the hospital. He had called, left messages, stared at his phone long enough for it to dim again and again. He picked it up immediately. “Anna?”Her breath rushed into his ear before her voice did. “Karl… I need you to listen to me. Please.”The tension in her tone tightened something behind his ribs. He pulled to a stop, eyes flicking briefly to the road ahead. “What’s wrong?”“I wasn’t supposed to he
Chapter 19 : Breaking Point
Melody had not touched the glass of water on the center table since she had brought it in.It sat exactly where she had placed it earlier, beads of condensation running slowly down the side and soaking into a thin circle on her desk. She wasn't sure who she was more furious at, Anna or Karl but heck, she was too upset to think about firing that little wretch at the moment.Less than two days. That's all she had left. She paced the living room, hands running through her hair as her mind raced. This was not how she hoped it would happen! Karl was not supposed to behave like this. He was not supposed to tell her to start packing.Hell, he's been doing a lot recently that was driving her insane! Someone had come in to inspect the house and the house documents weren't in her room, the place it had always been. He was serious. Heck, he was fucking serious. Her phone lay face-down on the desk. She had turned it over twice already, as though expecting something to appear on the screen t
Chapter 18 : The Game Of Chess
Karl sat opposite Ruchie, his damp jacket folded over the back of his chair, the heat of the café still clinging to his skin long after the rain had stopped dripping from his hair. The chessboard rested between them, pieces already arranged, the white side turned toward him. The silence in the cafe was deafening, pushed aside by the pressure in his chest as he lifted his eyes to meet hers.Ruchie wrapped her fingers around her coffee cup but did not drink. Her gaze stayed on him, as though she were still weighing whether his arrival in that storm had been bravery or desperation.“You remember the rule,” she said calmly. “You lose, you answer everything I ask. No dodging.”He inclined his head. “And if I win.”She leaned back in her chair. “I grant you one favour. One.”Her assistant stood close to the wall, tablet pressed against her chest, her jaw set as though she were bracing for something unpleasant. The men in dark suits remained where they had not moved since Karl arrived, wat
Chapter 17: In The Nick Of Time
The storm had been building since morning.Karl noticed it the moment he stepped out of the bathroom and drew the curtain aside. The sky hung heavy above the street with dark clouds that rolled slowly over one another. The trees along the fence leaned in the wind, their leaves shaking violently, scattering across the driveway. He checked his watch. Late. Not dangerously late but close enough to make his chest tighten. He crossed the bedroom in long strides and reached for his phone on the bedside table. No missed calls or texts for Anna still. He'd have to worry about that later. Right now, he needed to meet Ruchie for that game and possibly get the document signed. His last text to Ruchie's secretary still sat unread from twenty minutes earlier. I’m on my way.Karl turned toward the wardrobe, pulled on a clean shirt, then stepped into his shoes. He grabbed his jacket from the back of the chair and headed down the hallway. The house was unusually quiet, way too quiet for the usual b
Chapter 16 : Eight More Days
Karl reached the house long after dark, the porch light already glowing. He stood at the gate with his phone pressed to his ear, listening to the line ring out again before dropping into silence. He lowered the phone and stared at the dark screen. Another missed call. Another unanswered message. He had walked the hospital parking space twice after Anna had left in a hurry. He caught sight of her taxi driving off and had tried calling her a dozen times to no avail. He'd dropped her a couple messages, asking if she was home safe but none of it got a response from her. His thumb hovering uselessly over her name, considering if he should call her again. “Can I blame her? Melody had embarrassed her because of me.” He tucks his phone in his pocket. The gate creaked as he pushed it open. The living room lights were on.Karl slowed the moment he stepped inside.Melody’s heels were by the door. Her handbag rested on the console table, unzipped, its contents spilling out as if she had drop
Chapter 15 : The Drama Queen
Karl was still standing when the nurse appeared at the end of the corridor and lifted her hand slightly, signalling to him.“You can come in now.”He moved immediately.Anna was no longer lying flat when he entered the small recovery room. She was half-seated, her injured ankle elevated on a thick cushion, wrapped neatly in a compression bandage. The swelling had gone down slightly, though the skin around her ankle still looked angry. Her hair had come loose from its neat ponytail. A few strands clung to her cheek. She looked tired. But when she saw him, her face shifted in a way that made something tighten low in his chest.“You’re back,” she said quietly.“I told you I would be.”He closed the door behind him and crossed the short distance to her bedside. The room smelled faintly of antiseptic and plastic. A heart monitor beeped softly somewhere behind the wall. The nurse gave him a brief update before stepping aside.“No fracture. Severe sprain. She’ll need rest and physiotherapy.
