His door was ajar when he got back.
Karl had just returned from work and was heading towards his bedroom until he pulled a stop right outside the door. He never leaves his door open. He could clearly recall shouting the door behind him when he left for work that morning. Karl took a cautious step after the other twisted the room, did someone come in to raid his space when he was away? Shit! The Gordon contract. Karl stormed into the room, breathing hard as his eyes moved from one part of the room to another. He can't get caught now, not when he was yet to prove himself worthy to his grandfather. “What took you so long?!” Melody snapped. She was sitting on the edge of his bed and he had missed her completely when he scanned the room. His eyes moved from her to the drawer next to his bed, it was still locked. He exhaled deeply. His eyes went back to Melody, narrowed in suspscion. “What are you doing here?” She never comes to his room. Hell, she had suggested they stayed in an indifferent room and not once had she stepped into his space for any reason whatsoever. He stepped fully into the room, leaving the door open in hopes that she would be walking out of here soon. She leaned back on his bed and crossed her legs slowly. She had on a see through nightwear set. All it took was one tug and she's naked. Her lips curled. “Waiting for you.” His brow lifted as he watched her move slowly and seductively. “Why?” “I wanted to talk.” Karl stood rooted to the ground as he studied her. He scoffed and turned away from her. He set his briefcase down on his couch and turned towards his wardrobe and pulled out a clean shirt. He didn’t look at her. “We’ve already done enough talking today.” She stood slowly, walking towards him. “I know you’re upset,” she said. “But think about it. This isn't my fault..” Karl stopped mid motion as her hands caressed his back gently and slowly. Her lips leaned closer to his ear, hands now moving across his chest. “It was a mistake okay?” She whispered, “The Leon pitch is due in a few days and I don't want this misunderstanding to ruin anything..” Her hands went down to his belt. “Let me make it up to you..” her hands drifted lower until Karl caught her wrist and turned. “What are you trying to do?” He asked, brows furrowed. “I made a mistake,” Melody said. “What happened with Caden…” “I’m not interested in hearing it again.” She inhaled, steadying herself. “Karl, please. You didn’t even let me explain properly.” She glanced down at his belt and then his face, “I'm really sorry and I want to make it up to you…” Her other hand reached for him again and he caught both hands in one of his. A chuckle escaped him, she was doing exactly what he thought she was trying to do. She looked away for a moment, but he didn't miss the look of agitation in her eyes before she turned back at him. “I didn’t want to hurt you.” “Want to?” He repeated, does it ever end with Melody? “Come to my room tonight,” she said, her voice lowering. “Let’s not stay like this.” She stepped closer but he stepped back, his grip on her hands still tight. “Let me make it up to you, Karl..” Karl bowed his head, a breath escaping his lips. This wasn't new. Melody had always used sex or the illusion of it to force him to forgive her. Karl met her gaze, a smirk on his lips. “Is that what you want?” She nodded, “Anything to make it up to you..” He turned her and leaned her chest against his wardrobe. He leaned closer, his lips close to her ear. “You really think I would sleep with you after I just caught you with Caden hours ago?” He chuckled, “Did Caden put you up to this? So I can finish the Leon pitch?” Melody froze, how did he… “No. I was..” “I am not interested in sleeping with you, Melody. And don't ever think I ever will. Understood?” He released her and walked away. Melody stood there, trembling. He just refused her. Turned her down without a second thought! Her eyes followed him, jaw tight. “Fine!” She snapped, “Stay in your room alone then! Like I would want to sleep with the likes of you anyway!” She turned and yanked the door open, pausing just long enough to throw one last look over her shoulder. “You’ll regret this,” she said. Then she was gone. The door slammed. Karl stood there for a long moment, listening to her footsteps fade down the hallway. He exhaled slowly and sat down on the edge of the bed. The extent those two would have to get what they wanted baffled him. His phone buzzed, he looked at the screen. It was a private number. He slides on the receiver. Karl answered. “Hello?” “You sound like hell,” A playful voice said. Karl froze, “Sam?” he said in disbelief. The last thing he expected was his childhood friend's phone call. “Was worried you wouldn't recognise my voice, “Sam said, “It's been ages.” Karl exhaled, “Look man, I.. “ “You don't have to apologise for anything.” Sam said, “I'm just happy you want back in. Reed told me everything. Gave me your number too.” Karl leaned back, staring up at the ceiling. “Of course he did.” “He told me about your search for Ruchie too.” Sam exhaled, “Maxwell isn't going easy on you.” Karl closed his eyes briefly. “I deserved it.” He sighs, “I left him high and dry.” “True.” Sam admits, The old man couldnt truth any of his men. Had to adopt someone and gave him the over.” “So I heard.” Silence. “She’ll be at the Emmys on Friday.” Sam said, “Ruchie that is.” “I know,” Karl replied. “How?” Sam marvelled. He knew Karl didn't have influence like he used to but finding information like this without resources? Crazy work. Kar smirked, “ Lucky coincidence I guess. ” Sam let out a breath. “Good. That saves time.” he said, “I have a lot to ask about that woman and what made you change your mind but I know we'd have to meet for you to get into details.” Karl smiles, “I know. But I got to sort this Ruchie issue out first.” “How soon?” “This Friday.”Latest Chapter
Chapter 20: The Undead
Karl barely felt the weight of the document in his hand as he stepped out of the café. His thumb slid over the corner of the document as if the paper might disappear if he stopped touching it.It was done.Ruchie Emold had signed the agreement. For the first time in weeks, his chest did not feel tight. His hands touched the folder again, he had a chance at his inheritance. Fucking hell, he still couldn't believe it! His hard work had paid off. His phone vibrated in his pocket and he pulled it out. The screen lit up.Anna.His fingers paused mid-reach, he had not heard from her since the hospital. He had called, left messages, stared at his phone long enough for it to dim again and again. He picked it up immediately. “Anna?”Her breath rushed into his ear before her voice did. “Karl… I need you to listen to me. Please.”The tension in her tone tightened something behind his ribs. He pulled to a stop, eyes flicking briefly to the road ahead. “What’s wrong?”“I wasn’t supposed to he
Chapter 19 : Breaking Point
Melody had not touched the glass of water on the center table since she had brought it in.It sat exactly where she had placed it earlier, beads of condensation running slowly down the side and soaking into a thin circle on her desk. She wasn't sure who she was more furious at, Anna or Karl but heck, she was too upset to think about firing that little wretch at the moment.Less than two days. That's all she had left. She paced the living room, hands running through her hair as her mind raced. This was not how she hoped it would happen! Karl was not supposed to behave like this. He was not supposed to tell her to start packing.Hell, he's been doing a lot recently that was driving her insane! Someone had come in to inspect the house and the house documents weren't in her room, the place it had always been. He was serious. Heck, he was fucking serious. Her phone lay face-down on the desk. She had turned it over twice already, as though expecting something to appear on the screen t
Chapter 18 : The Game Of Chess
Karl sat opposite Ruchie, his damp jacket folded over the back of his chair, the heat of the café still clinging to his skin long after the rain had stopped dripping from his hair. The chessboard rested between them, pieces already arranged, the white side turned toward him. The silence in the cafe was deafening, pushed aside by the pressure in his chest as he lifted his eyes to meet hers.Ruchie wrapped her fingers around her coffee cup but did not drink. Her gaze stayed on him, as though she were still weighing whether his arrival in that storm had been bravery or desperation.“You remember the rule,” she said calmly. “You lose, you answer everything I ask. No dodging.”He inclined his head. “And if I win.”She leaned back in her chair. “I grant you one favour. One.”Her assistant stood close to the wall, tablet pressed against her chest, her jaw set as though she were bracing for something unpleasant. The men in dark suits remained where they had not moved since Karl arrived, wat
Chapter 17: In The Nick Of Time
The storm had been building since morning.Karl noticed it the moment he stepped out of the bathroom and drew the curtain aside. The sky hung heavy above the street with dark clouds that rolled slowly over one another. The trees along the fence leaned in the wind, their leaves shaking violently, scattering across the driveway. He checked his watch. Late. Not dangerously late but close enough to make his chest tighten. He crossed the bedroom in long strides and reached for his phone on the bedside table. No missed calls or texts for Anna still. He'd have to worry about that later. Right now, he needed to meet Ruchie for that game and possibly get the document signed. His last text to Ruchie's secretary still sat unread from twenty minutes earlier. I’m on my way.Karl turned toward the wardrobe, pulled on a clean shirt, then stepped into his shoes. He grabbed his jacket from the back of the chair and headed down the hallway. The house was unusually quiet, way too quiet for the usual b
Chapter 16 : Eight More Days
Karl reached the house long after dark, the porch light already glowing. He stood at the gate with his phone pressed to his ear, listening to the line ring out again before dropping into silence. He lowered the phone and stared at the dark screen. Another missed call. Another unanswered message. He had walked the hospital parking space twice after Anna had left in a hurry. He caught sight of her taxi driving off and had tried calling her a dozen times to no avail. He'd dropped her a couple messages, asking if she was home safe but none of it got a response from her. His thumb hovering uselessly over her name, considering if he should call her again. “Can I blame her? Melody had embarrassed her because of me.” He tucks his phone in his pocket. The gate creaked as he pushed it open. The living room lights were on.Karl slowed the moment he stepped inside.Melody’s heels were by the door. Her handbag rested on the console table, unzipped, its contents spilling out as if she had drop
Chapter 15 : The Drama Queen
Karl was still standing when the nurse appeared at the end of the corridor and lifted her hand slightly, signalling to him.“You can come in now.”He moved immediately.Anna was no longer lying flat when he entered the small recovery room. She was half-seated, her injured ankle elevated on a thick cushion, wrapped neatly in a compression bandage. The swelling had gone down slightly, though the skin around her ankle still looked angry. Her hair had come loose from its neat ponytail. A few strands clung to her cheek. She looked tired. But when she saw him, her face shifted in a way that made something tighten low in his chest.“You’re back,” she said quietly.“I told you I would be.”He closed the door behind him and crossed the short distance to her bedside. The room smelled faintly of antiseptic and plastic. A heart monitor beeped softly somewhere behind the wall. The nurse gave him a brief update before stepping aside.“No fracture. Severe sprain. She’ll need rest and physiotherapy.
