“And I woke up like this with you. Don’t tell me it’s what I am thinking. Did you do it, did you put it inside of me.” She yelled, her voice mixed with anger. “You took advantage of me, you are evil.”

Adrian’s mouth agape in shock, his eyes wide with disbelief and hurt. “Ava, what are you saying? I didn’t.”

“Shut up,” she countered, “No, I can’t remember anything. I am calling the cops.” She screamed, looking around for her phone.

Ava grabbed her phone, but Adrian, who wore just his boxer, moved closer. “Ava, wait it’s not what you think. I can explain.” He said, trying to calm her down. His voice was filled with anguish. Just when he thought he had the best time in three years, his wife accused him of taking advantage of her and threatened to call the cops.

“You came home drunk last night, you were the one who came to my side of the bed. You came to me, you wanted it. You kissed me, Ava.” He explained. “You begged me not to leave you. I thought it was what you wanted. I never drugged or advantage of you. Believe me, Ava.”

Ava felt her heart sink into her stomach; she couldn’t believe she had slept with her poor husband. The man she disliked, she gripped her phone tightly. “I don’t remember anything,”

“You don’t remember, but you know I wouldn't hurt you.”

“Shut up, I don’t trust you.” She yelled at him.

Her words hit him like a thunderstorm, and he felt a sharp pain in his heart. She wrapped the duvet around her body.

“I don't believe you, Adrian,” Ava said, moving towards the drawer, and she grabbed the pills bag.

“What are you doing?” Adrian asked.

“What does it look like I am doing? I don’t want to get pregnant for you.” She said as she swallowed the pills.

Adrian’s heart paused for a moment. He had tried everything for the marriage to work, but it was not working out. Ava and her family had always seen him as a disgrace and bad luck to their family, since the death of Roman Lockwood, her father.

“Is this what you want? Is this how you see me.”

“You are nothing, Adrian. You can’t take care of me; why would I want to have a baby for you? Can’t you see I don’t like you, my father forced me to marry you. You are poor; if not for my father, you would be on the street begging.”

Adrian’s face turned crimson; since he came into the mansion, he had faced a series of humiliations, and he had hoped one day everything would change, but hell no, things only got worse daily.

“I want a divorce, Ava.”

Ava shot him a cold and menacing glance, “I am happy you have come to your senses. I will call the lawyer and get the divorce ready. I have always wanted a day like this. I am happy it came sooner than I expected.” She spat.

Adrian felt his heart cut into pieces; he had thought about it as well; he could no longer stand the humiliation from the family. It was time to leave them.

A few hours later, the entire family sat in the living room with their faces lit up in excitement. The news came as a shock to them, but they were happy it was happening.

Delilah Lockwood insisted Ava informed the police about what happened the previous night. But Ava refused; since Adrian was leaving the house, there was no need to accuse him.

Ava’s cousins were also present; they all waited for the lawyer to arrive with the divorce papers. So he could sign them and leave them for good.

The door swung open and everyone thought it was the lawyer, but then a familiar figure stepped into the house. It was Wesley Westfall. Ava’s ex-boyfriend. Who had travelled out of the country, he was now back.

Delilah Lockwood narrowed her gaze at her daughter, Ava. Both mother and daughter seemed excited to see him in their house. Wesley was the son of one of the richest men in London.

‘Good morning, Mrs. Delilah. It’s nice to meet you.” He said with a warm smile.

“Good morning, Wesley. It’s good to meet you again,” she replied.

There was murmuring among Ava's cousins who sat on the other side of the room.

Ava hugged him, placing his kiss on his lips. Adrian felt heartbroken; he watched Ava kiss the same man she mentioned his name to while they were making out the other night.

“I called you here because I want you to witness how I am going to divorce my useless husband. I have missed you so much, I am happy you returned at the right time.” She said tauntingly.

Wesley smiled at her words; he was offered a seat as they waited for the lawyer. Ava made sure Adrian felt uncomfortable.

Adrian endured the insults and mockery from them. The lawyer arrived, a man in his fifties, his expression was neutral and professional.

“I am sorry for coming late. I needed to be sure everything was intact before coming.” He said calmly and politely.

“It’s fine, Mr. Samuel.” Delilah Lockwood blurted out.

She couldn’t hold the excitement that was evident in her eyes.

“Let’s get down to business, Mr Adrian. I was told you wanted a divorce. Is that true?” The lawyer asked.

Adrian shook his head, “yes,” he responded.

The lawyer sighed softly. His gaze darted from one person to another. He then shoved out a document from his briefcase. “Before, I allowed you to sign the divorce. I want you all to watch the tape, which was left by Your father and husband, Mr. Roman Lockwood.” He said firmly.

His statement left everyone in confusion; they mumbled and whispered in shock.

“Mr Samuel, what does my husband got to do with the divorce? You heard what this poverty-stinking man said. He wants to divorce my daughter; he is tired and wants to leave.”

“I am sorry, Mrs. Delilah. But this is what your husband asked me to do should this ever happen.” He said, his voice firm and sharp.

Adrian was mute unsure of what to say.

Mr. Simon looked at her with an unpredictable expression. “The truth will reveal itself in due time.” The double door creaked open, silencing the murmuring in the room. Dr. Kasper walked in with the men assigned to look after him. His black cases were tucked under one arm and a folder in his other hand. “I don’t have anyone to take over from me; I am a man with nothing to live for but the preservation of our family legacy.” Adrian shifted uncontrollably, “I am sorry for your loss but I don’t understand what has this had to do with me.”Simon’s expression softened as he stared at Adrian. “I am an old man, seventy-five years is no child’s play. My time is running out, and I refuse to let this empire fall into the hands of outsiders. People who have no understanding of the Brown’s name or the sacrifice it took to build it. Your father and I built it together before he left the world. You are the only surviving Kin, and I need someone with our name to carry on what we have built.” Adrian stared at him in stunned silence. “You mean you are asking me to take over the family empire,”Simon nodded, as a fainted smile tugged by the side of his lips. “I am not asking; I am offering you an opportunity most people would kill for. I have heard a lot about you, you attended the best school, Than

Adrian cursed under his breath as a surge of adrenaline washed through him. He bolted down the street, weaving through parked cars and abandoned dumpsters. The dim street lights cast fleeting shadows that dance like spectres in the night. The men were determined, their footsteps echoing in the cold night air. A crack of a gunshot echoed through the night; the bullet struck a steel container, missing Adrian. His mind continued to race as he scanned for an escape route. He found an open space where he rushed towards, hoping to disappear from the men, only to find himself at the dead end of a street. “Damn it,” he muttered in frustration. As he thought of running, a distant hum of the engine grew louder, with a black SUV screeched at the corner. Its headlights cut through the darkness like twin blades. Adrian barely had time to process what was happening. The door swung open, and two men in black alighted from the car and pulled out their guns, opening with precision. The first shot
