The machine roared, and every containment column burst open at once.

Glass rained across the chamber. Pale figures collapsed onto the floor, some gasping, others too weak to lift their heads after years of artificial sleep. Veyron barely glanced at them. His eyes were locked on the black shaft yawning beneath the central platform.

"Emergency containment!" he shouted, slamming his palm against the panel. "Close every seal!"

Nothing answered him.

Kai ran for his mother. Evelyn Ashford clung to th

  • 184: The Second Almighty

'Do not let it release me.'The voice slammed into Kai's mind so hard his knees nearly buckled. He clutched the cultivation manual against his chest, the cracked spine hot enough to scorch through his robes."Who are you?" he rasped. The figure inside the black column smiled with the First Disciple's Master's face. "You should listen to the voice in your head. It knows exactly what happens when the first identity is released.""Then why are you so eager to release it?""Because it belongs outside this prison."The answer came too quickly. Kai noticed that, and filed it away with a growing pile of things he hated.Behind the creature, thousands of faces flickered across the dark surface. Some screamed without sound. Others stared at Kai with fear, hope, or plain confusion. The control panel kept counting.IDENTITY RELEASE: 00:18."Master!" Kai snapped. "Stop it!""I am trying!" His master pressed both palms to the panel. Ancient symbols bloomed under his hands and died the instant he a

  • 183: The Voice Beneath the Stairs

The staircase broke beneath Kai's feet.He threw himself forward as the stone steps dropped into the darkness. His fingers caught the platform's edge, and pain stabbed through his injured spiritual foundation the moment he tried to climb.'Not now. Please, not now.'Something climbed out of the black column below. Hands scraped against stone, slow and patient. Then a voice drifted up."Help me."Kai's blood ran cold. It was Evelyn. Not a recording, not a cheap imitation, but the voice of the woman who had held him together the night they learned the truth about his family."Mother?" he whispered. The column rippled. A pale hand slid out of its surface and reached for him."Please, Kai. Don't leave me here."His knuckles whitened on the edge. Every instinct screamed at him to answer.'Wait. Think. Evelyn is safe at the upper facility, surrounded by guards. So how does it have her voice? Either the network recorded her, or it took something from her.'Neither answer was comforting."Kai

  • 182: The Command Without an Owner

Lucian's words still hung in the chamber when Kai realized the gate had vanished.Behind them, the wall had sealed itself into smooth black stone. No handle. No seam. No symbols.David slapped his palm against it. "It won't open.""Save your strength," Shen Tian said. "The command has cut this chamber off from the network.""Wonderful. Locked in a room with the villain. My favorite kind of evening.""Your sarcasm is noted," Shen Tian replied. "And unhelpful.""Noted and unhelpful is my whole personality."Kai kept his eyes on Lucian. His uncle looked untouched by the ruined city, his silver-streaked hair neat, his dark coat free of dust. But something was wrong. His Soul Formation Realm, Middle Stage aura was real, yet it seemed to rise from several directions at once, reinforced by something humming beneath the platform.'He's not strong on his own. He's plugged in.'"You brought us here," Kai said."Your master brought you here." Lucian smiled. "I only kept the road open."His maste

  • 181: The Name Beneath the Name

The countdown had already stolen two minutes by the time Kai reached the first intersection.Fifty-seven minutes remained.Above the ruined city, the pale column of light kept rising from the central district. It passed through shattered towers without lighting them, and the darkness around it stayed strangely untouched. Kai tried to brush it with his spiritual sense. His awareness came back empty, as though the distance between him and the light had been erased."Don't examine it directly," his master said behind him, breathing hard.Kai pulled his sense back. 'Of course. Everything in this city bites.'"You know what that thing is," he said. "Stop making me guess.""I know what it was built to do." His master pressed a hand to the black marks still fading around his neck. "The convergence site connects every preserved identity to one command. When it completes, the authority gains every memory, every spiritual signature, every cultivation record. Then it builds a unified will out of
