Four Hundred Voices

The vault did not open cleanly.

Four hundred twelve seals released in sequence, but only twenty-three chambers lifted their glass. The others remained closed under preservation safeguards, ownership gone while damaged bodies still needed the machines around them.

The first sound was coughing.

Then crying.

Then voices asking questions in languages the System translated badly or not at all.

His weapon lowered.

"Zero," he said.

Sophia checked the woman she had protected. The chamber glass was open now, but Sophia kept her hands near the woman's shoulders without touching until the woman nodded.

Only then did she help her sit.

"Name?" Sophia asked.

The woman answered in a language Jace did not know.

The interface offered a catalogue number instead.

Sophia closed it.

"We wait for her language," she said.

The vault filled with partial movement. A silver-skinned heir unfolded one arm. A child behind sealed glass opened both eyes. Somewhere in the far rows, someone laughed once and immediately began sobbing.

Noah stood in the center aisle with both hands open at his sides.

"You are not owned," he said.

The vault translated him into seventeen languages.

Several people panicked anyway.

One chamber began flashing.

Lucas crossed the aisle before Jace moved. He struck the recommendation panel with the broken frame.

It passed through the light.

"Useful," he muttered.

"Talk to him," Noah said.

"About what?"

"Anything that is not an order."

Lucas looked through the glass. The person inside had four arms, two held against their chest and two clawing at the seal.

Lucas lowered the frame.

"My name is Lucas," he said. "I woke up angry too."

The clawing slowed.

Noah stepped between them again, but this time he did not tell either to stop.
