"No, this can't be me." David said, looking at his bloodstained robe and hands. He looked ahead and saw Colleen who was already pacifying the child. The other townspeople who were around still continued on their regular activities, acting like nothing gruesome had just happened.

"Level 2 completed." Read the interface on his mind. He was shocked, baffled, afraid.

"I don't like this." He said, reaching Colleen.

"Me too. This wasn't how the game should be." She replied.

"He's not even a beast warrior or mage." She added.

Something was wrong with the game, she felt it, she knew it.

"I feel terrible, my guts feel filled with blood, I feel guilty." He spoke softly, still looking at his bloodstained hands.

"Does this mean I have to be a ruthless murderer to get home?" He questioned once more.

"Don't fret, David. I'm sure there's a possible explanation. We just need to find your next companions." She replied.

"What's your name darling?" She asked the girl.

"Audrey." The child whispered. She felt pity for her, she was now orphaned thanks to her and David, and she was unsure whether leaving the child at home was the best thing to do.

"Do you have a mother?" She asked.

"No."

At that moment, she made up her mind. She wasn't going to let the child be alone, and she sure as hell was not going to let the child suffer.

"You're coming with me. Where we're going. I promise you, you will only be happy." She told her. Audrey who has stopped crying, nodded her head.

"Thank you." She said softly.

Colleen carried her and proceeded.

"You're coming or what?" She yelled at the confused David.

He hurried after her, ignoring the carcass that had leaked blood all over the floor by then.

Sarah was in her apartment. She still kept thinking about David and his mysterious disappearance.

"No one can just disappear like that." She wondered, dropping the bottle of whiskey in her hand.

"Maybe he left through the roof. Maybe he was drunk and depressed." She wondered.

The possibilities kept pouring in, but she couldn't think of one.

With her frustration hitting a full stop, she got up, resolute to find out the secret behind his disappearance.

She picked up her car keys and left for his apartment, aiming to scope it one more time.

Half an hour later, she was there and she barged in. She looked around and couldn't find anything unusual. She walked into the kitchen… nothing. She looked into the bedroom then the bathroom, yet nothing. She paused, taking a few steps back. Something caught her attention and she couldn't shake the ominous feeling off her mind.

She looked at the PC, it was still running, although the screen was off.

It seemed odd, power to his room had been cut off already and his personal inverter could not have carried it on for that long, because it automatically went off after twelve hours.

She hurried towards it and turned the inverter on. Then she powered the PC on.

The backlight of the screen came on, and on the menu read "Level up: Beast World".

She peered deeply into the screen, still amused.

The game loaded and she saw something shocking, something she could not believe.

The game was playing on its own, and the player avatar had just killed someone.

"This isn't me." The avatar said, speaking to himself.

The game's camera turned and focused on the avatar's face. She gasped, holding her mouth.

Rather than the models that had been used for the character designs in the game, who she saw was her boyfriend. Someone she knew was missing.

"David."

David and Colleen finally reached the outskirts of the town they were headed to.

"Finally, we're here." She said. Audrey looked at the town ahead indifferently. Colleen rubbed her face with her right finger.

"Hey darling, you'll be safe, alright?" She said and they proceeded to the town's outskirts.

"Something's wrong." David said. They both paused, attentively listening to the wind blowing through the dry piece of land they were on.

"Someone's watching. Look out!" David yelled and jumped in Colleen's front, taking the force of an arrow. It bounced off his armour and he got up.

"We're under attack." She said, using her body as a shield for Audrey. David also did the same, shielding her from her back.

"Fuck, how do we get past this?" He cursed as arrows flew in their direction. He kept peering and saw something, the shadow of their attackers.

"I've seen our attackers, but I can't leave you two alone." He spoke.

"Can you use that portal thing to get out of here? Don't worry about me." He asked.

"I can't. The portal only leads me in and out of the game to the demo." She replied.

"Fuck this." He mumbled. He took off his armour and wrapped it around both of them.

"Stay here. If I die, run into the town, I'll regenerate and find you." He instructed.

She nodded her head and hugged Audrey tightly, wrapping her with the cloak.

He started sprinting, trying to pick out options on his interface. His cloak had the enhancement and regeneration, but he still had the save data on him.

His store was luckily a part of him and not the robe as he had thought.

"Sword." He picked and began waving the sword wildly, attempting to veer off attacks from the arrows. He was getting close to the shadows until an arrow struck his left leg. He crouched, and in that moment of weakness, took a hit to the back.

He fell. The pain was unbearable. He looked ahead and saw their assailants were concealed with masks.

"Bandits." He muttered angrily. With sheer strength, he pulled the arrow from his leg, picking his axe from his store.

He aimed for one, striking him down immediately. He jumped forward, hurling his sword at another. They were about fifteen and he knew he couldn't take them all, but he had to try. He quickly glanced back and saw Colleen and Audrey were now in the town. He smiled. He had already saved them.

He picked a second sword and made to attack the bandits when he noticed something…an arrow aiming for his head.

It was too fast, he didn't have his armour, he couldn't evade it.

  • He knew what he wanted

The sky was bright, the sun radiating glowingly on the earth as beams of gold mixed with the colour of the sand, creating a calm effect. David whizzed through the air, urging forward at top speed. It felt like he had flown for hours without rest, and finally, he stopped, sighting his destination. He touched down, his boots softly sinking inside the desert floor. He looked around, surprised to find the vastness of the desert empty. "What happened to all the bones and destruction?" He wondered, proceeding forward. "Perhaps I landed at the wrong point." He wondered again, looking around. However, he was sure he was at the right spot. The rising point wasn't too distant from where he was, yet he couldn't find the properties that uniquely defined the desert. It just felt like a ghost land which it was. He was frustrated, but kept it to himself. He needed to complete the mission, not burn out his energy throwing tantrums around no one in particular. On his way, he reflected on his last

  • Unfinished business.

"Now that you are responsible for his next mission objective. Tell me child, what will you do? By the way, to make your job easier… or harder, your next mission for him will reward him five levels upon completion. You'll gain access to his history in the game for mission context now. Think fast, you have less than an hour, and Your time starts now." She frowned, her heart felt shattered, heartbroken. Nonetheless, she had to make a decision. But, was she? _ _She shut her eyes, clouded in a river of thoughts to make a decision. She didn't want David to leave her alone, but she also wanted him to achieve his goal. It was hard, now knowing she was responsible for him. Her mind drifted to the system, her fists tightening with anger at the thought of it. It was the catalyst for this, playing her against her will. The fact that she was going to decide and play a part in this just seemed evil, worse, the timeline she had to make that decision. She wondered if she could stall, keep being

  • He's leaving you behind.

Colleen walked into the laboratory, ignoring the row of her friends all inside starting to ease themselves off their recent experience. She didn't bother answering when Dana called, and trudged forward like a zombie. In all honesty, her mind was blank, realising David had truly made up his mind. She proceeded quickly, only stopping when she got to the inner chambers where Audrey lay, recovering from an indecipherable cause of her deep slumber. She slumped into the chair, sighing heavily. Her eyes were shut, and her eyebrows were wet with building tears which she managed to squeeze inside. She sniffled, remembering his words. "I realised this was all a distraction. I have to go home" They stung her deeply like venom stinging one's skin. She hated it, everything that had happened with her. Her whole life was a mess, without purpose, without value. Not a single moment she could call a happy one, until David came into her life. Yet, she ended up being sad again. She wondered if Conra

  • Clarity on all ends.

Ladus was silent, a resonance of sorrow and grief encompassing the town for what it experienced at the moment. Contrary to the generally beautiful setting it once was, its compositions were darker, not evil, but void of joy, brightness, happiness. It seemed like a great tragedy had befallen the town, but it wasn't the case for the residence of the townspeople, they rather lived as they regularly did. The darkness only applied to what the town once was, the exteriors nearer the desert which included Gandu's laboratory, the Doctor's residence and other older structures that came with the dawn of the town. Gandu's laboratory wasn't empty, it was occupied by the gang, including Doctor Enitan who had all returned from what was a terrible day at Aterista. The general mood was gloomy, not one person, not even the comic relief personalities trying to light up the place. Everybody just sat, respectively reminiscing on the massacre at Aterista and how they had barely won the elves, almost los

  • It's over.

Aubrey hovered in the sky beside Tolek, watching them as Tolek raged. The sky rumbled with thunder, an effect of hers following her master's command. "Child, destroy them. Every one of them. Let none live!" Tolek commanded. Like a mindless robot, she sprung towards them with Zeddicus standing in her way. "Audrey." He spoke, but was cut off by a blow from her, crashing him against a tree. The tree cracked with some bones in his body, creating a painful sound that hurt both him and the earth. She did not stop, she pushed further, blitzing towards Colleen. She couldn't react fast enough as an unstoppable force crashed into her, throwing her metres away from the spot she was on, leaving a trail on the earth as she skidded through it. "Audrey, stop." David spoke weakly. She looked at him, then turned, seeing Zeddicus was starting to rise. She made for him, moving at the same speed she did earlier. Before he could react, he felt her palm breeze against his shoulder, and something tackle

  • No More Secrets.

"Well… Brett. Took you long enough to catch up. So, let's talk.… Friend." Bill relaxed on the chair, slumping his back slowly. Brett rose, his skin reddened with anger. He stepped towards the man and stopped, towering above his resting form. The air in the room was tense. Sarah watched with peculiar curiosity while Scar just stood, seemingly interested with the turn of events. He expected it, anything that had to do with Brett wasn't exactly milk and cookies. Brett finally broke the silence that flooded the room. "Why, Bill? Why?" He found himself asking, although he knew the answer already. Yet, he wanted to believe that his friend had other reasons for what he had done. Bill instantly rose, grazing past Brett and stopped on the wall. He placed a palm on the wallpaper design, tracing the spirals bit by bit, then he spoke. "You know what the smallest unit of life is?" He asked, turning to face them. Then he continued, "Data. Raw, untapped and unfiltered data." He paused for a s
