Chapter 248
Snap! Three arrows were flying even before Greg's mind could process the sound his ears had picked up. Greg had already taken the time to imagine how he would escape two arrows pinning him to a wall in the same way that the merchant was. And despite the mind-melting pleasure he was experiencing, Greg had never forgotten the fact that he was still in a dangerous situation, and any lack of vigilance might leave him dead! As such, when he heard the sound of wood snapping, Greg's mind had immediately kicked into overdrive as he summoned his soul bow and sent three arrows flying toward the source of the sound. The merchant had been trying to take advantage of Greg's distraction to free himself. Whether to attack them or to try and get away, Greg didn't know. He hadn't only managed to break off the shaft on the right close to his chest but was yet to push off the wall so it could come out through his back. Two of the arrows went through his hand and into his shoulder, effectively pinning
Chapter 247
Greg could tell that Sir Joram was trying to figure out a way to get free of them. Pulling them back out was a no-go as the arrowheads would just do more damage if they once again reentered his body. The only safe way to go about it would be to snap off the shafts of the arrows where they entered his body, grit his teeth, and push off from the wall. The pain would be excruciating, but in the rage that he was in, Greg doubted that the man wouldn't be able to grit his teeth and bear it. The only reason the man didn't, Greg suspected, is because of the cold looks Greg kept sending his way every three to five seconds. No threats were spoken, but the look in Greg's eyes left very little doubt that Greg would pin him to the wall with even more arrows if he tried to break free of the two. This time the man had been lucky not to bleed out from an arrow nicking the wrong blood vessel. He, however, was acutely aware that he might not be so lucky next time. The man didn't harbor any illusions
Chapter 246
To her credit, the woman didn't try to lie to him to save herself. Instead, her gaze dropped to the ground. "He was my husband, and I'm just a woman, what was I supposed to do? What could I do?" She pressed. "I couldn't stop him myself. I was afraid of what he'd do to me if he realized that I knew about his darker dealings. I also couldn't turn him over to anyone in this city. Half of them are already paid off by him and the other half is just as, if not more, corrupt than he is. Justice in this city is only those who have enough coin or power to take it," She revealed in a bleak tone of resignation. Greg could tell that the woman was being serious and not just trying to save herself. "A day!" Greg had allowed the silence to hang between them until it was almost unbearable before he spoke up. "Serve me for a single day and I won't harm you in any way," He offered. The woman almost sagged with relief for having somehow managed to save her life. Greg's glare, however, only intensified
Chapter 245
A mocking smile crossed Greg's lips even as he moved across the room to stand before the grimacing merchant. He was careful not to come within arm's reach of either the man or his wife. If any of them thought to try anything, he'd have at least a second to react. With his draw speed, he was certain he could let loose an arrow in that window. While the merchant was gritting his teeth because of the pain and directing a baleful glare at him, his wife stood frozen. It had taken a second, but Greg could see that it was finally sinking in what her husband had just done. That she was only alive, not because the man she loved had protected her, but because their foe had seen through him. Her gaze slowly turned in the merchant's direction and Greg could see the betrayal she felt. His smile only widened as he drove the dagger deeper."I can understand why a soulless worm like you wouldn't care anything about my sister, Sir Joram. But your own wife?" He posed, leaving the implication unspoken.
Chapter 244
Greg's goal, however, wasn't to scare or stun the man, instead, his goal was to poison the trust between man and wife by revealing just how much he'd been keeping from her. Greg could remember during his first dungeon run that the man's wife had pleaded that he couldn't afford to pay anything above a hundred thousand gold coins as that would leave them in crippling debt. Only, during his last dungeon run, the man had been willing to bid half a million gold coins for his services. By quoting such a specific number, the man would know that his true wealth was already known and wouldn't be able to lie. Besides, with his life on the line, he was too distracted to much care that his wife found out that he'd been lying about how much money they had. "Why so silent Sir Joram, come on, let's negotiate!" Greg mocked in a sneering tone suffused with hate. "Tell me, do you think all your wealth will be enough to bring back my sister to life?" he questioned. "Look, what happened to your siste
Chapter 243
It was all made up, of course. Greg didn't have a sister inside the dungeon. He, however, had thought long and hard about how he'd go about this. For all their dysfunction, the two before him seemed to, in their own convoluted way, love each other. If he just killed the man, with no reason or justification, it was almost certain to turn the wife against him. At best, she would just refuse to cooperate with him, at worst, she would try to sabotage his plans if not outright kill him. No, if he was going to take out the husband, he'd have to give a justification that not even she could argue against. Luckily for Greg, the two had already given him the bits and pieces he'd need to put his plan together. From her, Greg had gotten the confession that she knew that her husband was more than a mere merchant. During his very first dungeon run, after he'd had his first run-in with Sir Joram, he'd gone to find the man's wife in the garden of this mansion. That's where she'd admitted that she kn
