CHAPTER 2: THE LAST STRAW.
"Jessica, baby, I know this is coming as a surprise. I wasn't expecting I'd do this either, but that's love for you, right? It makes you do unexpected things," Michael chuckled, looking up at Jessica.
She gulped, stunned at Michael's bold gesture.
"I want to spend the rest of my waking days next to you, and our days filled with love. So, Jessica Sean, will you marry me?" Michael popped the big question, right in front of everyone.
Jack's mouth gaped as he looked in shock. Then he chuckled, "Guys, that's a good one. You almost got me." But the look in their faces wasn't altered. If they were acting, they did a pretty good job of keeping up with the act.
Jessica's cousin, Margaret, got her phone and recorded all that went down at that moment. Jessica nervously looked around, smiling mildly. She saw the excited faces of her parents. Her mom even subtly nodded in affirmation.
She finally turned at looked at Jack, her husband. The smile on her face faded as she looked at him. The duo stared at each other for a short while before she turned and looked at Michael who anticipated her answer.
Cracking a smile, she replied, "I do. I will marry you, Michael."
She offered Michael her left hand, so he went ahead to fix the ring on the middle finger. Jessica's family cheered excitedly as Michael got up and kissed her.
Jack looked in total disbelief at what he had just witnessed. His joints weakened. He could barely move a muscle. A mixture of anger and pain, a depth of pain he had never felt before overwhelmed him.
While the Seans celebrated, all he could hear ringing in his head was a whizzing sound, causing him to be disoriented.
"Jack. Jack!" He snapped out of his daze as he heard his name called forcefully.
"Are you okay, man?" Michael asked.
"Am I- Am I okay?" he asked, looking furiously at Michael. "How long has this been going on?"
"Come on, buddy. This is worth celebrating. I'll take good care of Jessica, something you never did," Michael responded.
Jack angrily advanced toward Michael, causing Michael to step backward in fear, but Mrs Sean stood in his way.
"Lay your filthy hands on my son-in-law and I swear to God I'll make sure you rot in jail!" she snarled. Every muscle in Jack's body felt like shoving her aside, but he refrained from doing so, out of respect.
Jack looked at Jessica who could barely look at him.
"Why, Jessica? Was I not enough? I stayed faithful to you, not even interacting with my female colleagues because it got you jealous. And this- This is what I get, for standing by you, and helping you be the best you can be?" Jack asked, fighting back tears as he spoke.
"It's unfortunate, but I've outgrown you. You can't keep up with me. So it's best we go our separate ways," Jessica replied.
Jack chuckled softly, walking back to where he sat, and leaned on the table with both hands. Jessica reached into her bag and brought out a paper. She walked over and placed it on the table where Jack stood.
"I wasn't sure when the appropriate time was going to come, but I guess this is it."
Jack looked at what was placed before him. It was divorce papers.
"Your pen," Jack requested, looking at Jessica. She furrowed her brow, puzzled that he didn't even hesitate or try to beg. She reached into her bag and handed him the pen.
Jack signed the papers and placed the pen on it. She cautiously walked over and took the papers, keeping a keen eye on her now ex-husband.
"I'll have my lawyer send you a check of a hundred and thirty-five thousand dollars as your alimony," she said.
"That's very generous of my daughter. I raised her well," Mrs Sean commented.
"Keep it. You'll be needing it," Jack responded, then he walked out of the house. As the door shut, it suddenly opened again and a redhead stepped in.
"Uh, why is Jack looking all cold as he walked out the door, not greeting me as he usually did?"
"Isn't it obvious, Peggy? Jess divorced his broke ass, so he's sad as he's got no one to leech off of," Margaret replied.
"Good riddance!" Peggy remarked, smiling as she walked toward the rest, shutting the door.
"Finally, we're rid of him," Mrs Sean sighed in relief as they all sat back down to eat.
"I wonder what you ever saw in him in the first place," Margaret said.
"Enough of that nuisance, whom we shall never see again. We now have a new member of the family, Michael.
"What does that mean?" Peggy asked, furrowing her brow.
"Michael just proposed to your sister," Mrs Sean replied elatedly.
"What?!" Peggy exclaimed, making everyone look at her.
"I mean, congratulations, sis. One door closes, another one opens, right?" Peggy laughed.
"Sure," Margaret replied, joining in the laughter.
After dinner, Jessica and Michael said their goodbyes to the Seans and headed to their vehicles. Jessica headed home before he did. Just as she arrived at the Rosker Tower, alighting from her car, she saw that Michael followed her.
"Just so you know, I don't find stalking romantic," Jessica said as he approached her.
"Trust me, darling, this isn't the case. I just wanted to be sure that we were safe. I was afraid of leaving you alone with Jack. He's probably not in the right state of mind right now," Michael said.
"My guardian angel." Jessica went ahead and gave him a kiss, then they took the elevator up to her floor. Unlocking her door with her fingerprint, they both walked in. The lights came on as they were motion-sensitive.
Jessica furrowed her brow. For the lights to be off meant no one was home. They went ahead to check Jack's room, but he wasn't there. They went on to check her room and found his absence as well.
"All his things are intact. He hasn't come here yet," Jessica said.
"Well then, I'd better make myself comfortable. I'm going to be right here until he comes," Michael said, wrapping his hands around Jessica's waist, and kissing her on the neck.
She smiled mildly, but wondered where Jack had gone.
________________
Sitting at Central Park, Jack was engrossed in his thoughts. The tears he had held back while at the Seans residence finally streamed down his face.
He closed his eyes and took a deep breath in, and exhaled. Wiping his face, he reached into his pocket and brought out his phone. After scrolling through his contacts, he dialed a number.
Shortly after, someone answered the call.
"I am ready," Jack said.
"It was about time. You know where to find me," a firm but calm voice replied from the other end, ending the call.
Jack set down the phone, and his countenance turned gloomy. His eyes blazed with wrath.

CHAPTER 16: REASONABLE DOUBT.Jessica drove her car and parked in the parking lot of the complex. She turned off the ignition and sat back in the car for a while. She was exhausted and hungry. It was already nine in the morning, and she desired to satisfy her hunger. But a lot weighed on her mind. She took her phone from her purse and scrolled through it randomly, checking to see if she had any calls from Michael. There was not a single call though, to her disappointment. She sighed as she went deep in her thoughts. But she shoved those thoughts aside. She didn't want to entertain them. She grabbed her purse, got out of the car, and took the elevator up to her penthouse. Alone in the elevator, she spoke to herself. 'I need to know what he was doing there. I can't assume and jump to conclusions. No.'As the elevator dinged open, she hurried out and walked straight to her apartment. As she was about to unlock the door with her fingerprint, she saw the logo of the company that produce
DIFFERENT CONTEXTS.
CHAPTER 15: DIFFERENT CONTEXTS.Gasping, Jessica jerked awake. She was still feeling a bit disoriented as she looked around, gaining some level of cognizance as to where she was. She was still at Samantha's house. They had fallen asleep in the living room, lying on the couch. She heard an alarm system going off. The twins, or one of them had woken up."Hey," Jessica greeted yawning."Good morning," Samantha smiled as she got up. "Sorry you had to wake up in this manner." "Nah. It's no big deal. When they call, we must answer, right?" she replied, smiling. "Oh, we have to. We know what happens when we don't," Samantha chuckled, heading upstairs to check on the kids. Jessica sat on the couch as she watched her friend leave. It made her wonder.'How can she even muster the strength to smile after all that happened some hours ago?'It finally dawned on her that Samantha was really good at hiding her feelings. And she did so for quite a while.Consoling her friend for something she hers
DISCUSSIONS AT THE TABLE.
CHAPTER 14: DISCUSSIONS AT THE TABLE.JACK'S POV.I woke up the next morning refreshed, revitalized, and re-energized. The previous night was one I really needed. Additionally, I was famished. I got up and washed my face in the bathroom before I headed downstairs to the kitchen, just wearing my bathrobe. As I got there, some of the house staff were already working on breakfast. The delectable aroma filled the atmosphere. Noticing my presence, they quickly bowed."Good morning, sir," they greeted."Hello," I replied smiling mildly. Then I went ahead to open the fridge to see what I could find. "Let us help with whatever it is you want sir," one of the staff said, walking toward me. "It's alright. I've got it," I responded and continued. I made myself some oats with milk, topping it with some nuts, banana, almond, and strawberry. Tasting it, I nodded and headed to my room with it. I could help but begin to scoop from it while I walked. I used to make this when I was still married,
A FRIEND IN NEED.
CHAPTER 13: A FRIEND IN NEED.JESSICA'S POV.Still caught up in my dilemma, I stood there confused. "Argh!" I grunted and impulsively walked to the restaurant instead. My friend needed me. I made a mental note to ask Michael later what took him to that hotel. Walking in, I saw that the diners' attention was on the arguing couple."You're supposed to be home with the kids, Malcolm. Yet you're here with her, again?" 'Again?' I asked myself, furrowing my brow. So Sam had been keeping this to herself all along. "Honey, it's not what you think. She's a client. We had to uh- We had to meet to discuss a few things in person. It's nothing more than that," he replied, visibly tensed. Sam scoffed, shaking her in disbelief while he spoke. "Who is this, Malcolm? Why is she interrupting us?" the woman Malcolm was with asked, looking pissed with a frown on her face. Malcolm glared at her, speaking through gritted teeth, "Let me handle this!" "Who the hell is she Malcolm?" she continued. "Ar
AT A FIX.
CHAPTER 12: AT A FIX.JESSICA'S POV. Stretching as I yawned exhaustedly, I found out it was already past ten at night. And Michael wasn't back home yet. Samantha was still around though. How fortunate for me. I really needed her around more than I cared to admit. "Hey. Don't you think you should be heading home? It's quite late," I said. "It's okay. I already spoke with my husband about it, and I asked the babysitter to watch the twins. I already paid her for the extra hours, so I can stay for as long as I want," Samantha replied. "And what about Julie and Sallie? I'm sure they're missing their mom.""Well, someone else needs my attention. They've had me all day," she replied, making me chuckle softly."I'm truly grateful that you're here. It really means a lot.""What are friends for?" Samantha responded, smiling as she took hold of my hand and patted it. "Remember how we used to pull all-nighters back in college?" Samantha asked. "And what we did mostly was binge on rom-coms r
THE DISTRACTION I THOUGHT I NEEDED.
CHAPTER 11: THE DISTRACTION I THOUGHT I NEEDED.JACK'S POV.The maid got down on her knees as she picked up the plates that had fallen, clattering upon impact with the floor. I was stunned to see that part of her left boob had slid out of her maid's uniform. I gulped as I glanced at it. Why the heck was I not looking away? Was it because it was perky and firm? Was it because I hadn't had sex in a really long while? I froze, staring at the maid's boob. 'But wait a minute. Why were they out in the first place? Her uniform is supposed to be buttoned to the collar.' This thought helped snap me out of my momentary daze as I looked away, clearing my throat. But I had observed a mild smile creep up her face briefly."Oh my! I'm so sorry, sir. I was so clumsy," she said as she picked up the broken pieces. "It's alright," I replied, lacking the boldness to look in her direction. "Please, let me go get something to clean up this mess I've made," she said as she quickly headed out of my room
