Red with embarrassment at being misdirected, Damien searched the cafe once again for his actual date.
Damien’s steps slowed as he approached the correct table, where a woman in a sleek red dress tapped her manicured nails impatiently against the wooden surface. She looked up, her sharp features set in an expression of annoyance. “You’re late,” she snapped, folding her arms. Damien forced a smile. “Apologies. I had a mix-up earlier—” She didn’t let him finish. “Typical. You can’t even show up on time, and they expect me to give you a chance? Let me guess, another emergency at your little clinic?” Damien’s jaw tightened, but he remained calm. “I work at a hospital. And yes, my job can be demanding.” The woman scoffed, her voice dripping with disdain. “A gynecology nurse. What kind of man does that? Honestly, this is ridiculous. My parents must be out of their minds.” “Yes, I am sure it is beneath you but I love my job. Can we get on with the date now, please?” The woman glared at him, “you must be out of your mind to think I would ever be interested in someone like you. I was done the minute you were late,” Before Damien could respond, she grabbed her glass of water and splashed it across his chest. Gasps echoed through the café as she stood, tossing her napkin onto the table. “You’re a joke,” she hissed before storming out, leaving Damien drenched and humiliated. He let out a slow breath, pulling a napkin from the table to dab at his shirt. He was used to people making assumptions about his profession, but this was a new low. Deciding he’d had enough for one day, Damien left the café. Damien turned down a quieter street on his way home, he spotted Evelyn Sterling surrounded by two rough-looking men. He assessed their body languages to be able to get a read on them to be sure he could step in. He already made a mistake once today, he didn’t want to make it a pattern. His eyes narrowed when he walked closer, their aggressive stances and her wary expression set off alarm bells. “Come on, sweetheart,” one of the men sneered. “Just a little fun. No need to be so uptight.” “Step back,” Evelyn said firmly, Damien’s instincts kicked in. Without hesitation, he approached them calmly, “Is there a problem here?” The thugs turned to him, sizing him up. “Mind your business, pal,” one of them growled. “I don’t think the lady appreciates your company,” Damien replied, positioning himself between Evelyn and the men. “Leave while I am being nice,” he threatened subtly. The lead thug sneered. “You’ve got guts, pretty boy. Let’s see if you’ve got the strength to match.” They advanced on him, one flipped out his pocket knife to try to scare Damien but he managed all he could not to scoff at the sight. One tried to punch Damien but his instincts kicked in, he blocked the attack and punched the thug on the side of his rib before giving him a quick punch on the jaw. The lead thug let out a scoff and glared at Damien with as much hatred he could muster, “I am going to kill you,” “No, you are going to try,” Damien smirked. The fight was quick because Damien’s military training made short work of their clumsy attacks, leaving the two men groaning on the pavement. Evelyn watched in stunned silence, her composure momentarily shaken. As the thugs scrambled away, she stepped forward. “Thank you,” she said, her tone genuinely grateful. “It’s nothing,” Damien replied, brushing off his shirt. “Are you alright?” “Yes, thanks to you.” Evelyn hesitated, then added, “I owe you. Let me repay you somehow.” Damien stopped short, a little shocked at her offer. Evelyn saw her opening and pressed, “I can arrange for you to work at one of the most prestigious companies in the city. A man with your skills shouldn’t be stuck as a gynecology nurse.” Damien smiled faintly. “I appreciate the offer, but I’m happy where I am. It’s not glamorous, but I like helping people.” Evelyn’s respect for him grew but she wasn’t convinced, “Okay, how much do you want?” She pressed further, “Thank you but like I said, I don’t do this for rewards,” he said simply. Evelyn tried not to appear shocked, her sharp mind began to work. Damien’s sincerity and refusal to exploit her gratitude were qualities she rarely encountered. Unlike the suitors her grandfather paraded in front of her, he had no interest in her wealth or influence. “Thank you again,” Evelyn said finally. “You’ve given me a lot to think about.” “Please get home safe, It’s not wise to be walking around alone,” “I will, thank you, Damien.” Damien tipped his chin and smiled before he walked away. Evelyn stared at him till he turned the corner before she reached into her bag and took out her phone. She dialed her assistant, “Find out everything you can about Damien Cross,” she instructed. Later that evening, Damien returned home, tired but satisfied that his day had ended on a better note. Or so he thought. When he unlocked his apartment door, he was greeted by the sight of his blind date but this time, she was in red seated on his couch, her arms crossed and a smug expression on her face. He turned back to the door to make sure he got his apartment correctly, he could be hallucinating for all he knew. “You’re not getting rid of me that easily,” she said, her voice dripping with contempt. Damien stared, his patience wearing thin. “What are you doing here?” “I’m here to give you one last chance to prove you’re not a complete waste of my time,” she declared. “Excuse me?” “You heard me,” the woman snapped, her eyes darting to her painted nails as she admired it. Damien rubbed his temples, already regretting every decision that had led to this moment.

Chapter Twelve
Damien had never been a man who cared much for money beyond what was necessary to live comfortably. He had always been content with his simple life, his job, his small but functional home, and the quiet satisfaction of helping people. But after the hundred-million-dollar deposit from Madam Ling, things had changed in ways he hadn’t anticipated. And not necessarily for the better.Somehow, the news had wound itself with the media. His phone hadn’t stopped buzzing for the past two days. Messages from unknown numbers, old acquaintances suddenly remembering their “deep bond” with him, and distant relatives he barely knew all had one thing in common, their sudden interest in catching up.It didn’t take a genius to figure out why.“You look like you’re about to throw that phone out the window,” Evelyn remarked as she walked into the kitchen, dressed impeccably as always. She grabbed a cup from the cabinet and poured herself some coffee before settling across from him at the table.Damien
Chapter Eleven
Damien sat in his living room, his phone still glowing with the absurdly high balance in his bank account. The hundred-million-dollar deposit stared back at him, taunting him with its life-altering weight. His mind struggled to process it. He had spent his entire life working hard, saving carefully, and living modestly. Now, in the blink of an eye, he was one of the wealthiest men in the country. He had no idea if he wanted to be happy or sad at that realization. Everything he had done, he did it from the goodness of his heart and not for the reward.A lot of people have offered him money and gold but he had rejected them because he just was that kind of person. The sound of light footsteps drew his attention, and he looked up to see Evelyn standing at the bottom of the staircase, her silk robe loosely tied around her waist. Her hair cascaded over her shoulders, and her sharp eyes studied him with curiosity. “You’re up late,” she murmured, stepping closer. “What’s wrong?” Dam

He stepped out of the car with his medical bag slung over one shoulder as he approached the butler waiting at the entrance. It’s been three days and he was right on time for his check up. They entered the mansion, and he was surprised that the once lifeless mansion was now had staff bustling about. It looked like the madam’s health worked with the energy in this house. “Mr. Cross,” the butler greeted him with a respectful bow. “Thank you for coming.” “How is Madam Ling doing?” Damien asked as they walked through the halls. “She’s improved remarkably,” the butler said with a smile. “She’s even been sitting up in bed and speaking more frequently. She specifically asked to speak with you after your check-up today.” Damien nodded, pleased to hear the news. “That’s good progress. Let’s see how she’s doing.” The butler led him to the madam’s room, where she was propped up against mountain of pillows. Her complexion still looked a litt
Chapter Nine
It was past midnight when Damien quietly slipped through the front door of the house. He stopped short when he saw Evelyn sitting on the couch, her legs tucked under her and a book in her lap. Their gazes met and she smiled. “You’re late,” she said gently, setting the book aside as she stood. “I know,” Damien replied. He dropped his bag near the door and rubbed the back of his neck. “Sorry about that.” “Are you tired?” She asked with concern written all over her face. “Completely,” he admitted with a faint smile. “It’s been a long day.” He left the rest of the details. Evelyn hesitated, biting her lip. There was so much she wanted to say, but the fatigue etched across his face made her pause. “You should get some rest.” He nodded. “Thanks for waiting up, Evelyn. Goodnight.” With that, he climbed the stairs to his room, his body swaying under the fatigue. Evelyn stood at the base of the stairs, watching him disappear into his room. She had been waiting for hours, re

Damien on the other hand, there was no emergency in the hospital. He was on his way to meet a special client so he took a taxi to the airport where the person was waiting with a private plane. He adjusted his cufflinks as the private plane touched down smoothly on a secluded airstrip. The Ling family had gone to great lengths to arrange this meeting, and though Damien wasn’t one to indulge in frivolities, their request had piqued his interest. He stepped out of the plane and was greeted by an impeccably dressed butler, who bowed deeply."Mr. Cross," the butler said, "Thank you for coming on such short notice. The car is ready to take us to the Ling mansion."Damien nodded, "please, lead the way."The butler occasionally glanced nervously at Damien, as though gauging whether the man beside him could deliver the miracle he hoped for. When they arrived, Damien stepped out of the car and was momentarily taken aback. The mansion was breathtaking."Impressive," Damien murmured, more to him
Chapter Seven
Evelyn Sterling adjusted her silverware, her polished calm masking the irritation she felt inside. Across from her sat her three friends, Amelia, Vivian and Victoria each impeccably dressed and accompanied by their equally ostentatious husbands. Tonight’s dinner was meant to be a casual gathering, but Evelyn knew better. These dinners always devolved into competitions of who had the wealthiest, most accomplished husband. Tonight, however, the stakes felt higher; because this was the first time she’d be introducing Damien to her friends.Something she has been avoiding since she walked in there with him. Damien sat beside her, calm as always, his hands loosely folded on the table. His quiet confidence only made Evelyn more aware of the condescending glances being cast in his direction. “So, Evelyn,” Amelia began, her voice lilting with faux curiosity. “We’ve all been dying to know about your husband. You never even told us you got married, I can see why you hid it from us, so what d
