Easy First Task

Reese stared for a brief moment, watching as the words slowly vanished. Then a different screen appeared beside the first.

[System Sync Complete. Welcome, Reese Miles.]

[Main Objective: Survive, Get Wealthy, and Dominate.]

[Side Objective: Make Better Life Decisions. Seriously.]

The screen flickered, then faded until only a small translucent panel hovered in the corner of his vision.

His body jerked slightly as a wave of something, like cool electricity, rushed through his nerves.

It wasn’t painful, but it was definitely unnerving. The lights in the room dimmed for half a second, though that could have just been in his head.

Then the pain in his back, the soreness in his limbs, the fog in his thoughts vanished. Like someone hit a reset button on his body, annd it actually felt nice.

“…What the actual hell?”

He touched his chest, blinked, then leaned forward and pressed a hand to his leg. No pain.

Okay. This isn’t just a hallucination.

Before he could explore more, the hospital room door opened and Trey walked in with two large takeout bags. The smell hit Reese like a brick wall, spicy, greasy, and delicious food all for him.

“Hey,” Trey said, setting the bag down on the table near the bed. The scent of hot food wavered in the air.

Reese turned and offered a faint smile. Trey didn’t say anything else, just returned the smile and began unpacking the food containers.

Reese shifted onto the bed, adjusting his posture to make sure Trey didn’t suspect a thing and to think of a good answer when Trey would notice the screen.

“I had your stuff moved to my place,” Trey said, handing Reese a spoon and a steaming plate. “The guys I sent said the whole place was wet. Any idea how that happened?”

Reese shrugged. Of course he knew, It was his apartment. But explaining meant opening the door to more lectures, more passive-aggressive comments. So, he said nothing.

That apartment had been a last resort, a place his father rented after they got evicted from their home.

The old house had been sold off as a result of rent debt and rumors of drugs. The new place? A crumbling mess.

The roof leaked constantly. The walls were stripped and peeling. Windows shattered and patched with cardboard, barely protecting anything.

If not for the rusted metal bars, the place wouldn't even qualify as shelter.

And yet, Reese had made peace with it. It was quiet and cool, and most importantly, it was his, now that everyone was gone.

The night of the accident, he’d been excited. Too excited. He’d rushed out, forgetting to put bowls beneath the usual drip spots.

Heaven knows how soaked everything would be by the time he got there. But then, he was grateful Trey had his things moved. He was only worried that Trey might have forgotten his personal files.

"Hope you're ready to chew like a wild animal," Trey said, as he flipped open the containers. "Got you protein, carbs, and something green. Barely."

He paused when he saw Reese sitting up straight, looking way too alert.

“You okay? You look like someone injected caffeine into your soul.”

"I'm good," Reese muttered. “Actually… I feel amazing.” And that was the truth. He felt better, his eyes were sharper, clearer, and he could hear everything loud and clear.

His mild body pain was gone, and coupled with the fact Trey couldn't see the screen, he was overjoyed.

Which only meant he could make money in secret, and no one would know how or who might be helping him.

Trey raised a brow but didn’t press it. He was used to Reese saying weird stuff after stress.

Reese eyed the takeout, and then, another screen popped up.

-[Optional Task Unlocked: First Responsible Purchase

Use your existing assets wisely to unlock seed capital.

→ Task: Pay Trey Back - $12.58 for Lunch

→ Reward: $100,000 Seed Capital (Tier 1 Access)]

He stared at the floating text, dumbfounded. The system was giving him a morality quest.

“Trey,” he said slowly, reaching for the table on his other side. “I owe you for this, right?”

Trey looked at him like he’d grown a second head. “Since when do you pay me back for food?”

“Since… now.” Reese picked up his wallet and found a crumpled twenty. “Take it.”

Trey narrowed his eyes. “Did the accident rewire your brain or something?”

“Something like that.”

As Trey took the money reluctantly, studying Reese's face for something strange, the screen switched again.

[Task Complete: You Paid Your Friend]

→ $100 unlocked.

→ Seed Capital Tier 1 Active.

→ Cold Clarity [Passive] activated: You see things for what they are, no more sugarcoating. No more lies.

Suddenly, Reese felt the room shift. Not physically, but perception-wise.

Trey’s concern, the nurse’s earlier discomfort, even the empty plastic cup on the table, it all felt clearer.

He didn't even need to know about the system as long as it got him money. But then, there would be times he would need to study what would be controlling his actions

"A $100k," Reese muttered to himself as he put the first spoon into his mouth. "I could get a good place with that and see if I could do a little hunt for a new job."

Reese scoffed. "Now it's dictating my own life," he said and heaved another sigh. Just thinking back to what had happened that day, he couldn't help but wonder if Tessa actually loved him.

With what Eli said, about her escapades with other guys, especially her lecturer, he found it hard to believe she actually loved him.

It’s not like he would go back to her anyway. The deed was done, and she was the reason he nearly lost his life. If not for Trey...

He would have died, and she'd go back to whatever she was doing, maybe even find someone wealthy enough to keep her from doing all she did.

"Reese."

Trey called, pulling Reese out of his reverie. He turned to Trey with a concerned look, hoping he didn’t think something was wrong.

To his surprise, Trey showed him Tessa's text message to him, and what he saw made his gaze turn dark.

However, speaking, or thinking of the devil, she walked in. Wearing a white sundress that made her look as beautiful as always.

Her dark hair was parted into two and braided to form pigtails. Beautiful as always, with those brown eyes that glowed when she stared at the sun.

On sighting Reese, Tessa’s expression softened. She put her bag and the things she came with on a table before making her way to his side.

"I'm so glad to see you're awake," she said, cautiously stopping by Reese's side while he slowly fed himself. "How do you feel?"

Reese stared blankly. He glanced at Trey, giving some kind of signal, but Trey shook his head and mouthed, "I'm not talking to that thing."
