The entire lobby fell silent. No one had expected Maverick to actually slap Mrs. Collins. She was the wife of Richard Collins, the president of the bank and one of the most influential figures in the city’s financial circle. Yet Maverick had sent her crashing to the floor with a single slap.

Claire stood frozen beside him, eyes wide. Around them, the bank employees stared in disbelief. Some covered their mouths. Others took a step back, as if afraid of being pulled into the mess.

Mrs. Collins sat on the floor for a moment, hand pressed hard against her cheek. The shock on her face quickly twisted into fury. She scrambled up, pointing a trembling finger at Maverick.

“You… you dare hit me?!” Her voice rose. “Do you know who I am? Do you know who my husband is?!”

Maverick didn’t answer. He simply adjusted his sleeve, Claire finally found her voice. “Sir… You shouldn’t have interfered?”

“I did what needed to be done,” he replied quietly.

Before Claire could say more, the elevator opened.

Ding!

A middle-aged man in a well-tailored dark suit stepped out with a dark expression.

Richard Collins had been upstairs for a meeting. Shortly after going up, an employee had hurriedly informed him that an incident had broken out in the lobby. He came down at once.

The moment he stepped out of the elevator, he saw his wife on the floor with one hand against her cheek, while a young man stood calmly in front of her.

Any ordinary man would have been furious. For someone of Richard’s status, If he did nothing, the entire bank would think he could not even protect his own wife.

His face hardened as he walked forward. The moment Mrs. Collins saw him, her eyes reddened on cue. She struggled to her feet and rushed toward him with a breaking voice.

“Richard! This bastard just slapped me in front of everyone! He humiliated me and accused me of cheating on you!” Tears streamed down her face as she clutched his arm tightly.

“If you don’t stand up for me right now, I swear I’ll stab myself right here in this lobby!”

The lobby grew even quieter. Employees exchanged uneasy glances. Richard’s gaze locked onto Maverick, cold and heavy. “Did you hit my wife?”

Maverick met his eyes without flinching. “I did.”

Richard’s expression darkened further. He turned slightly toward the security guards standing nearby. “Restrain him.”

Several guards immediately stepped forward. Claire’s face changed. “Wait!...Sir he tried to protect me”

Maverick raised a hand. “Hold on.” The guards hesitated, glancing between Maverick and their boss. Maverick looked directly at Richard.

“I know you want to deal with me because I hit your wife. But you should listen to what I have to say first. There’s something concerning your life that I need to tell you.”

Richard’s eyes narrowed. “My life?”

“Yes.”

Maverick stepped closer and leaned in. Richard instinctively wanted to push him away.

He was accustomed to dealing with people who approached him for favors, information, or money. He had little patience for vague claims from complete strangers, and Maverick was standing far too close.

But then Maverick whispered his first sentence into his ear.

“Don’t you think your children look a bit too much like your driver?”

Richard froze. His hand, which had been raised slightly as if to push Maverick away, stopped in midair.

For several seconds, he simply stared at Maverick. Those words had struck somewhere he hadn’t expected.

“How…” His voice became quieter.

Maverick didn’t answer. Before he could respond, Mrs. Collins stepped forward.

“Richard, what is he talking about?” Her voice was no longer as confident as before.

Maverick had already exposed her past in front of everyone. Now he was claiming to know even more.

A bad feeling suddenly crept into her chest. Richard didn’t answer her. Instead, he turned toward the security guards.

“Give us some space.” The guards exchanged glances before slowly backing away.

Mrs. Collins’ face changed. “Richard?” She watched as Richard grabbed Maverick by the arm and pulled him toward a quieter corner. Her heart began pounding.

“What did you tell him?” she demanded.

Maverick didn’t even look back. Richard took Maverick farther away, leaving Mrs. Collins standing there with a growing sense of unease.

Just moments ago, she had been certain her husband would make Maverick pay for humiliating her. Now, instead of dealing with him, Richard was secretly taking him aside.

She clenched her fists. 'What the hell does this bastard know?'

For the first time, she wasn’t worried about the slap. The two men moved farther from the crowd.

The security guards stood there awkwardly, unsure whether they should continue following their earlier order.

Claire also remained where she was, completely confused.

She had no idea what Maverick could possibly have said to Richard.

But Maverick knew exactly why he had stopped him. He had not said those words merely to frighten him.

In his previous life, Richard Collins had met a fate painfully similar to his own. A man who had once stood at the top had eventually been destroyed by the very woman he trusted.

After graduating, Richard had quickly distinguished himself through his exceptional abilities. His success attracted both admiration and jealousy, and someone eventually plotted against him.

During that incident, Richard had unknowingly been exposed to drugs that severely damaged his reproductive system.

Despite visiting numerous famous doctors and seeking treatment abroad, his condition never improved.

He eventually divorced his first wife because of it. For a long time afterward, Richard struggled with depression.

Then he met Mrs. Collins. She became pregnant and eventually gave birth to twins...a boy and a girl.

A paternity test confirmed that the children were Richard’s. To him, those children were nothing short of a miracle.

After everything he had gone through, he finally believed that life had given him something precious.

That was why he tolerated many of his wife’s shortcomings. Even when people around him began criticizing her behavior, Richard rarely took their words seriously.

But Maverick knew the truth. He knew how that story ended and that was precisely why he had stopped Richard today.

He had no intention of watching another man make the same mistake he had made in his previous life.

Maverick looked at Richard. “I came here today for business.”

He paused. “But after seeing what was happening, I couldn’t leave without warning you.”

Richard’s expression remained tense. “What exactly are you warning me about?”

Maverick didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he lowered his voice.

“What I’m about to tell you concerns your wife, your children…”

His eyes became cold. “And your driver.”
