Chapter 002 - Death As The Best Option

****

“Madam supervisor, I apologize sincerely. You know my house was quite far away from here and I had to trek every day.”

“You, you wretched and unfortunate person! How does it affect me, even if you had to walk from the outer reaches of space to here every day? Look at the time you’re just arriving at work! A whole thirty minutes late.”

At this moment, the place that initially had only Williams and the person who had informed him of his tardiness was now filled with several other guards who were casting mocking glances at Williams while the supervisor scolded him.

It must be known that the supervisor wasn’t the only one who harbored a strong dislike for Williams. His colleagues also despised him, and their animosity had begun long before the supervisor’s aversion.

When Williams was first hired, their supervisor favored him and treated him with special consideration then, assigning him easier tasks that had fueled their jealousy.

Rumors even circulated among them that the supervisor had a secret crush on Williams and might even become romantically involved with him.

It should be noted that Williams was an exceptionally attractive man.

He wasn’t just good-looking; his blue eyes were like rubies, radiating beauty. He was tall, well-built, exuded an air of importance, and was undeniably special.

Even they had envied his appearance, prompting them to mock him both openly and behind his back, considering him a hollow vessel with just good looks but no substance.

Well, back to the current situation.

Back then, they had all believed that Williams would eventually become involved with the supervisor and manipulate her for his own gain, which had fueled their resentment. However, for reasons unknown, they suddenly realized that the supervisor’s hatred for Williams had intensified even more than their own.

……

“Madam supervisor, I’m truly sorry. Please consider today as a final warning for me, and you can even punish me. I promise this won’t happen again.”

“What?” The supervisor, an unattractive woman, momentarily went silent, her eyes widening as if she had heard a joke. “Give you a warning? Punish you?”

When Williams saw her reaction, his heart gradually stopped beating, and a cold sensation crept over him. He instinctively sensed what was about to happen and quickly hoped it was just his paranoia.

But alas, what was meant to happen would inevitably occur, whether you want it or not.

“Dear Mr. Williams, what do you think this place is? A family-run organization…” The ugly lady abruptly chuckled at her second half of the question, as if she had just made a joke.

“As if you are even allowed anywhere near anything related to your family.”

Williams couldn’t respond because that wasn’t his concern. It was his colleagues who snickered under their breath, mocking him.

“Look, Williams, I’ll be honest with you. I’ve been looking for ways to fire you for a while now, and this…” She pointed at Williams, who was still in his house clothes. “Is all I need. Williams, you’re terminated.”

Williams, “…”

Williams once more, “…”

For a moment, he was stunned and couldn’t react at all.

His head began to throb, adrenaline coursed down his spine, and coldness enveloped him.

He was familiar with this feeling, as he had experienced it on the day his parents’ deaths were announced, on the day he was evicted from the family, and on the day he had learned the truth about his ex-girlfriend.

But Williams knew that this feeling, this one here, the one he was experiencing now, might be the one that could destroy him if he didn’t handle it carefully.

“No… no, supervisor, you… You can’t do this to me. Where… no organization will hire me at all! Please, you’re sentencing me to death!”

In the blink of an eye, Williams’ eyes reddened, and he radiated an aura of desolation.

He rushed toward the supervisor and knelt before her, discarding his pride and masculinity.

Witnessing this, even Williams’ colleagues, who had despised him, were momentarily speechless and exchanged glances.

Some of the more compassionate among them even pitied him and felt like shedding tears on his behalf.

They, like ordinary people, knew that no one would employ someone who had been exiled by the formidable Miller family.

As for the supervisor, she remained unfeeling and even wore a mocking smile.

Then she approached Williams, bent slightly to look down on him, and raised an arm to caress his face, her face etched with playfulness.

“Honestly, I wouldn’t bat an eye if you were run over by a truck right here and now…”

She muttered loudly enough for everyone to hear, but then she leaned in and whispered in Williams’ ear.

“As I told you, I’ve been waiting for an opportunity to fire you for a long time. Who would have thought that even after your girlfriend cheated on you with your cousin and you spent days behind bars, you still wouldn’t give me that chance? Well, your cousin has paid me handsomely for this. You can leave now.”

With those words, the ugly lady with heavy makeup laughed wickedly at Williams, then patted his face playfully before walking away. Suddenly, she remembered something.

“Oh, I almost forgot.”

Then, out of nowhere, she spat heavily on Williams’ handsome face and giggled excitedly, as if she had finally achieved something she had longed to do.

Nobody could react, especially Williams.

It wasn’t because of the spit on his face; rather, it was the revelation from his now-former supervisor.

Williams’ head started spinning like a malfunctioning microphone connected to a sound system.

He didn't even notice the spittle on his face for a while.

As for his now-former colleagues.

They quickly distanced themselves from their cruel supervisor, while some gave Williams sympathetic glances and shook their heads before returning to their posts.

Among the rest, some laughed at Williams and mocked him, reminding him not to take their uniforms with him when he left, and they also returned to their posts, leaving behind the person who had alerted Williams to his late arrival.

This individual looked at Williams for a long time before sighing.

In this entire organization, he was the one who interacted with Williams the most and the only one who didn’t despise him.

He was the only one with a pure heart.

He gazed at Williams, who appeared to have lost his spirit and sighed deeply before approaching him.

With a heavy sigh, he helped Williams to his feet.

“Brother, I promise you that everything will work out soon. There are no completely closed roads for human beings; they’re built to find a way no matter how bad the situation is.”

……

Williams, realizing that begging to be reinstated after his cousin’s interference was futile, walked back home with a heavy heart.

He had never imagined that he would be dismissed in this manner, given that he always went above and beyond in his duties and performed them flawlessly.

He had always been cautious because he understood that his life would be reduced to nothing if he lost that job, but now…

Williams still clung to the hope that it was all a bad dream.

This was his fervent wish as he arrived at his apartment door. However, when he reached his door, his legs bumped into something, jolting him awake.

Immediately, Williams was puzzled about what was in front of his door. But upon lowering his head, he was overcome with goosebumps.

“What’s… what’s my bag doing here?” he murmured to himself in a raspy voice.

With that he quickly retrieved his keys and, with trembling hands, managed to insert them into the lock. To his surprise, the door wouldn’t budge, no matter how hard he tried.

“I… I wasn’t behind on my rent! What… what has happened?”

The sequence of bad luck he had been experiencing back to back these past few years immediately made Williams think of the worst. And then immediately, all the tears he had been holding back since leaving the company finally came cascading down from his eyes.

Without realizing it, Williams sat on the cold cement floor with his back against his door and wept.

He cried for a long time before he finally mustered the courage to approach his landlady, who had always treated him kindly in the past.

From her, he learned that his cousin was once again responsible.

…….

“Great! In addition to being jobless, I’m now homeless.”

With his bag slung over his shoulder, Williams walked along the road, looking like someone who had lost all will to live.

“Isn’t death better than all this suffering?”

As soon as Williams had this thought, he felt that he could no longer endure any of it and that death was the only option left.

With that, Williams began to contemplate his only option when suddenly, he saw an oncoming speeding truck, which immediately felt like an answer.

“That’s right, right? Death is better.”

With a firm resolve, Williams closed his eyes, and two tears trickled down his cheeks again.

“Goodbye to this wretched life. I hope things will become better if I ever reincarnate.”

Williams was about to take the final step to his death when suddenly, a disdainful mechanical voice echoed in his mind.

[How unfortunate for this poor system to be assigned to such a weak and useless host?]

“Huh?”

Williams was instantly taken aback, his face blank with surprise.
