As his eyes closed, Daven finally realized that no one would love him, just because he loved them in return. Only money could elevate a person’s status and make one respected. If he had money, Gerald and Maya would never have looked down on him.
If he had money, he could get wherever he wanted and even trample on those who bully him. If he had money, he could get whoever he wanted… Just if… With that thought, Daven finally lost consciousness on the hard floor, his breathing turned shallow as well. With no one to help him, he lay almost lifeless on the bare floor for hours. Three hours later, Daven’s eyes fluttered open due to the sound of the phone ringing endlessly in his pocket. He groaned, feeling his head was about to split open while the bones in his body felt like they were about to pull apart. Still, he managed to take out his phone, and while he squinted his eyes, he saw that it was his father calling. Quickly, he connected the call, “Father, I am sorry, I will be home soon…” He looked out the window to see that it was dark and his father must have been very worried. “Daven…” Contrary to his expectations, his father’s voice came out very weak and fragile. “I need you here at the hospital. The bills… they need to be sorted.” “What?” Daven gasped, sitting upright while holding onto his back in pain. “You are at the hospital? How?” Even though his father’s health wasn't that great, when he left home, his father was healthy. “Yes, I fell…” Suddenly, his father’s voice was cut short with a nurse’s angry voice, demanding Daven to come to the hospital immediately to sort out the bills. In the next second, the call ended and Daven stared at the blank and cracked phone in his hand with despair. He knew the bills were going to be a lot of money and he only had a couple of hundreds of dollars to give out. It would never be enough. His body was now gripped with fear and hopelessness. Where was he to get money? He needed all the money he could scrunch up and he quickly searched his pockets, hoping he would find the bills that were thrown at him earlier. However, he quickly realized that he left them on the football pitch earlier. Slowly, he stood up to his feet, enduring his painful joints and his almost fractured back as he wobbled back to the pitch. He reached the spot he was in earlier, only to find that the money was gone. “What are you looking for?” A voice resounded from behind and Daven turned to see one of the players. He quickly asked, “I left some money given to me here. Did you see them by chance?” “Oh, that…” The player chuckled. “Gerald gave it out to another cleaner. He said you didn’t need them–” “What?” Daven gasped, not believing his eyes. He had worked hard for that money and Gerald just took it like that? “Where is Gerald?” He asked, already feeling very annoyed. “At the parking lot. About to leave…” Daven didn't even wait for the player to finish his sentence before dashing away, ignoring the searing pain in his body. He didn't care whether Gerald was going to beat him up again, all he knew was that he needed to get his money back. His father was lying sick in the hospital and he wanted to show up. He also didn't want to bother his sister for money because he had made sure his sister didn't work much and only focused on her studies. Daven couldn't afford to fail in his breadwinner duties. One little setback wouldn't deter him. A few minutes later, he reached the parking lot, only to see Gerald smooching Maya by the side of his car. But he didn't care about their relationship anymore, he just wanted his money. “Why are you here again?” Maya snarled, letting go of Gerald and stomping toward Daven. However, Daven quickly avoided her by taking a detour, shocking Maya to the core. Did he not notice her? Daven stood before Gerald, staring at him with bloodshot eyes, and he demanded, “I heard you took my money, give it back!” “Tch! What money?” Gerald snickered, mockingly. “$300? Is that what you call money?” “I don’t care! My father is dying and I need to pay the bills! You wouldn't like what I would do to you if you took that money from me!” Daven warned his mind dead set on causing Gerald harm. However, Gerald wasn't one bit scared by his threat, “Too bad...” He chuckled. “…I already gave it out.” At the same time, Maya chipped in, “Since your father is dying, you might as well go with him. You can take your scrawny sister along with you both too.” “What did you just say?” Daven stared at Maya angrily and desperately holding himself back from lunging at her. They laughed in his face, seeing his restrained body movements and as they had nothing else to say to him, Gerald slowly led Maya to his car, kick-started it, and started to drive away slowly. However, Daven couldn't let them leave that way. He needed the money and didn't care how he was going to get it. So, he quickly ran straight and stood before the car, spreading his hands wide open to stop them. But then, Gerald suddenly let out a sick smile, his eyes shining with wickedness. “Do you want to watch a bloody show?” Gerald smiled at Maya and she nodded, enthusiastically. As soon as she nodded her head, he stepped on the accelerator and drove speedily toward Daven. Daven’s eyes widened in shock seeing Gerald’s car speeding toward him. He immediately tried to dodge but he was too slow… Bang! Daven’s body flew in the air and landed on the hard floor as Gerald drove out of the parking lot. Daven coughed up blood, with his head dripping with blood and his eyes were already blurred with blood. He saw death before him and his heart clenched in anger and thirst for revenge. However, his body had given up, his life slowly slipping away and he might never be able to get back at Gerald. He wished he could have another chance to drill a hole into that quarterback’s head. Another chance to take care of his family fully, instead of thinking about an ungrateful girl like Maya. But at the same time, a robotic voice resounded in his head. [System Awakening! “You really own this place?” Elena had to ask, as she beheld the beautiful ambiance of the house. It was a very comfortable place for a student to stay in, but of course, she was going to question this reality. “Yes.” Daven nodded.“How?” She raised her brow. As far as she knew, she knew he wasn't a rich guy. Or did he lie to Ari all this time?Daven scratched his head and Ari looked away quickly because he had no answer either. But she continued to probe, “How did you get all this money to get a house and then a car? I know it’s not in my place to ask, but I will be living here for a while. I need to know if we are all safe.”“Yes.” Daven nodded, his eyes holding her gaze to reassure her. “I assure you, I do not engage in any form of fraud and I pay my taxes regularly. You don’t need to worry.”Elena pursed her lips, her eyes intently searching his. Daven was a reliable man, she knew that but she could never know what was in his heart. However, she decided to trust him. “It’s good
A Harsh Slap To The Face
“Of course, I do. Don’t you want to become affiliated with me?” The old man asked, staring keenly at Daven. “I would love to.” Daven didn't dare say otherwise, but still, he wasn't about to throw his pride away. “However, I may have to decline your kind gesture. Thank you so much for holding me in such high esteem.”Old man West went calm and instead of being offended, he was very pleased and proud of how principled Daven was. He realized the young man was reliable and he was even more determined to keep their relationship longer. “I understand you.” Old Man West nodded. “However, if you need anything at all, in this country. Do not hesitate to reach out to me.”“I appreciate your kind gesture.” Daven broke into a genuine smile and bowed slightly. He felt the old man was really wise and the secret of his system ability would be kept a secret. Soon, he was led out of the mansion and as he stepped out, he saw an alert of $20 million! A smile broke out on his face seeing that the old
The New Grandson
“You must be out of your fucking mind, Daven!” Lady West cut in, her chest heaving. “How the hell did you even get in here?”“That’s enough, Maria.” the patriarch cautioned, however, she wasn't about to let go. “Father, you can’t be deceived by that boy!” She warned as she walked back to him. Her eyes stared at him pleadingly. “Deceived?” He chuckled. “Daven has proven himself before me. It’s you who is so blind to see his potential.”“How can you let someone who is clearly against your daughter into the house when you wouldn't even let your grandson in?” She yelled. Her eyes were red, and a sharp glint of displeasure flashed in them. The patriarch took a pause, his hands fisting beside him. “Do not mention that good-for-nothing to me anymore.” He pointed sharply at her, and alarm bells were already ringing in Lady West’s ears but she chose to ignore it. “You don’t get it, do you? Gerald is your grandson!” Lady West was distressed, and she had totally forgotten about the outsider
A Mystery He Had To Unravel
Daven followed the patriarch into the mansion and they walked into the study where the incident had happened. The blood was still all over, evidence of the injury the old man had sustained. However, the patriarch went past it and sat at his table, his legs crossed over. He stared at Daven with meaningful eyes, wondering where he had encountered the young man before.“You are injured. You should treat yourself.” He pointed at the first aid box which had been left lying around. Daven darted his eyes suspiciously from the box to the blood and then to the old man, wondering if he was not going to say anything. He was deliberately ignoring the obvious and Daven was going to keep it that way until the matter was tabled. He got to the first aid box and brought out a few things to treat himself as the old man watched keenly. “You and I know what happened, right?” The patriarch finally spoke up and Daven froze. However, he only pursed his lips and didn't say a word to the patriarch. “I wa
No Fear Of Death
Daven moved like a flash, catching the sharp end of the knife in his hand and it dug deeply into his palm, his blood dripping heavily. “You dare stand in our way!” The man who had appeared all of a sudden barked. He looked just like the muscular man from earlier and it was obvious they worked together. He dragged the knife right out of Daven’s hand and was about to stab him in the face once again when Daven pulled back. He had no patience left to fight this man and so, he ran into the room he had approached earlier, and as soon as he got in, he opened his mouth in shock. The servants from earlier who had attended to him were huddled up inside. Some had gotten injured and their blood spilled all over the room. “Shit!” Daven cursed as he realized this was a full-blown attack on the entire West mansion. An influential family such as this was attacked! In just a few minutes he arrived, they had all been besieged! “Save us!” They all cried, right on their knees with their hands clas
Did I Kill Someone?
Daven couldn't go down! Never!Even though this man was way stronger than him, he would do everything he could to defeat him. Before the punch could land on his face, he dodged to the side, catching the man off guard. The muscular man lost balance in that moment and staggered forward to the wall, while Daven quickly ran toward the door. As soon as he got in, he locked the door with a snap of his fingers. He let out a deep breath before slowly turning around to see that he was in a study room with a strong smell of blood. He jumped the moment he saw the patriarch’s body right on the floor with a bloody knife by his side. The old man clutched his stab wound, breathing heavily like he was about to take his last breath. “Shit!” Daven cursed and quickly rushed to him. On the other hand, the muscular man kept banging on the door. The door’s hinges shook like it was going to fall out in seconds. “Are you okay?” Daven asked the old man whose eyes had turned into slit, life slowly slippi
