As his eyes closed, Daven finally realized that no one would love him, just because he loved them in return. Only money could elevate a person’s status and make one respected. If he had money, Gerald and Maya would never have looked down on him.
If he had money, he could get wherever he wanted and even trample on those who bully him. If he had money, he could get whoever he wanted… Just if… With that thought, Daven finally lost consciousness on the hard floor, his breathing turned shallow as well. With no one to help him, he lay almost lifeless on the bare floor for hours. Three hours later, Daven’s eyes fluttered open due to the sound of the phone ringing endlessly in his pocket. He groaned, feeling his head was about to split open while the bones in his body felt like they were about to pull apart. Still, he managed to take out his phone, and while he squinted his eyes, he saw that it was his father calling. Quickly, he connected the call, “Father, I am sorry, I will be home soon…” He looked out the window to see that it was dark and his father must have been very worried. “Daven…” Contrary to his expectations, his father’s voice came out very weak and fragile. “I need you here at the hospital. The bills… they need to be sorted.” “What?” Daven gasped, sitting upright while holding onto his back in pain. “You are at the hospital? How?” Even though his father’s health wasn't that great, when he left home, his father was healthy. “Yes, I fell…” Suddenly, his father’s voice was cut short with a nurse’s angry voice, demanding Daven to come to the hospital immediately to sort out the bills. In the next second, the call ended and Daven stared at the blank and cracked phone in his hand with despair. He knew the bills were going to be a lot of money and he only had a couple of hundreds of dollars to give out. It would never be enough. His body was now gripped with fear and hopelessness. Where was he to get money? He needed all the money he could scrunch up and he quickly searched his pockets, hoping he would find the bills that were thrown at him earlier. However, he quickly realized that he left them on the football pitch earlier. Slowly, he stood up to his feet, enduring his painful joints and his almost fractured back as he wobbled back to the pitch. He reached the spot he was in earlier, only to find that the money was gone. “What are you looking for?” A voice resounded from behind and Daven turned to see one of the players. He quickly asked, “I left some money given to me here. Did you see them by chance?” “Oh, that…” The player chuckled. “Gerald gave it out to another cleaner. He said you didn’t need them–” “What?” Daven gasped, not believing his eyes. He had worked hard for that money and Gerald just took it like that? “Where is Gerald?” He asked, already feeling very annoyed. “At the parking lot. About to leave…” Daven didn't even wait for the player to finish his sentence before dashing away, ignoring the searing pain in his body. He didn't care whether Gerald was going to beat him up again, all he knew was that he needed to get his money back. His father was lying sick in the hospital and he wanted to show up. He also didn't want to bother his sister for money because he had made sure his sister didn't work much and only focused on her studies. Daven couldn't afford to fail in his breadwinner duties. One little setback wouldn't deter him. A few minutes later, he reached the parking lot, only to see Gerald smooching Maya by the side of his car. But he didn't care about their relationship anymore, he just wanted his money. “Why are you here again?” Maya snarled, letting go of Gerald and stomping toward Daven. However, Daven quickly avoided her by taking a detour, shocking Maya to the core. Did he not notice her? Daven stood before Gerald, staring at him with bloodshot eyes, and he demanded, “I heard you took my money, give it back!” “Tch! What money?” Gerald snickered, mockingly. “$300? Is that what you call money?” “I don’t care! My father is dying and I need to pay the bills! You wouldn't like what I would do to you if you took that money from me!” Daven warned his mind dead set on causing Gerald harm. However, Gerald wasn't one bit scared by his threat, “Too bad...” He chuckled. “…I already gave it out.” At the same time, Maya chipped in, “Since your father is dying, you might as well go with him. You can take your scrawny sister along with you both too.” “What did you just say?” Daven stared at Maya angrily and desperately holding himself back from lunging at her. They laughed in his face, seeing his restrained body movements and as they had nothing else to say to him, Gerald slowly led Maya to his car, kick-started it, and started to drive away slowly. However, Daven couldn't let them leave that way. He needed the money and didn't care how he was going to get it. So, he quickly ran straight and stood before the car, spreading his hands wide open to stop them. But then, Gerald suddenly let out a sick smile, his eyes shining with wickedness. “Do you want to watch a bloody show?” Gerald smiled at Maya and she nodded, enthusiastically. As soon as she nodded her head, he stepped on the accelerator and drove speedily toward Daven. Daven’s eyes widened in shock seeing Gerald’s car speeding toward him. He immediately tried to dodge but he was too slow… Bang! Daven’s body flew in the air and landed on the hard floor as Gerald drove out of the parking lot. Daven coughed up blood, with his head dripping with blood and his eyes were already blurred with blood. He saw death before him and his heart clenched in anger and thirst for revenge. However, his body had given up, his life slowly slipping away and he might never be able to get back at Gerald. He wished he could have another chance to drill a hole into that quarterback’s head. Another chance to take care of his family fully, instead of thinking about an ungrateful girl like Maya. But at the same time, a robotic voice resounded in his head. [System Awakening! Ignoring The System
Maya’s rage-filled face spelled danger in Daven’s mind and just like he had thought, she went crazy. In the blink of an eye, she stormed in between the crowded students, rushing toward the road with an oncoming car. “Maya…” Daven muttered, and then his voice rose a notch higher. “Maya! No!”He moved without thinking, at twice the speed of hers. But it was a bit too late. Her body had jumped before the car without notice and the next second, there was a loud crash. Bang!Maya’s body collided with the car and she flew up in the air, like she was levitating. At that moment, Daven swallowed and for the first time, he felt a chill down his spine. He was scared she was going to hit the ground, bursting her brains open, and go straight to hell. So, he moved using every ounce of his strength. His hands were stretched out as Maya landed in his arms. The impact was too much and their bodies crashed to the floor almost immediately. However, Daven quickly sat up ignoring the lightness in h
Going Down Together
Before the eyes of everyone, Daven pulled out another new and sparkling phone, and Maya’s bladder almost burst in shock. This time, she thought of slapping the phone out of his hands again but Georgina had her eyes on her."Don't you dare!" Georgina warned. "If you are really innocent, why are you so jittery?" "I..." Maya stuttered, as she glanced at the other committee members. They all looked at her with irritation in their eyes and they were no longer on her side. However, Georgina was the most angry, "If you turn out to be guilty, Maya, just know you are fucking finished!"They all urged Daven to go and the next second, he had footage being displayed on the large screen. The camera was positioned perfectly as Maya made her way through the campus grounds that morning. In that moment, she received a call from someone, asking her to meet up and Daven turned to look at Doctor Blackman who was focused on the screen. He wondered how he was going to act if Gerald's face was displayed.A
I Came Prepared
“How do I know you are going to keep your end of the deal? I need some sort of security."Maya’s voice rang out from Daven’s phone making everyone shift in their seats. “The one million dollars I sent to her…” Daven began explaining his side of the story. “She demanded it. She wanted some sort of security, something to push her to testify to the truth.”The silence that prevailed over the room made Maya scared and she felt a chill running down her spine. Her bladder almost burst open too. But she had to stand her ground, “That’s a lie.”“True.” Georgina immediately backed her up. “If that is the case, why hasn't she testified in your favor? You gave her the money to favor you, right?”“If you have no evidence to tender, then this case is closed.”Maya nodded, her fists clenching feeling the sweet wave of victory. She was absolutely sure Daven didn't have any other thing or evidence against her. However, he looked at her with an intense gaze. “This is your last chance to say the tr
Daven Or Maya?
“Can I see that receipt?” Georgia immediately stood up, her eyes dimming with thrill. Maya shook, glancing at Daven with fear in her eyes. A minute ago, she had been running her mouth, but now, she was suddenly so weak and fearful while she clutched her dress again. “I…” She stuttered, as a tear slipped from her eyes. “I am scared.”Daven shook his head, a light scoff spilling from his mouth. He had to give it to her, because she acted so damn well.“No one is going to harm you here,” Georgia assured, stepping from the table toward Maya. The next second, she embraced her, the hug turning into an emotional display. “I am sorry for all that happened. The school will make sure to give you justice.” “Thank you.” Maya wiped her tears as she pulled away from the hug. She passed her phone to Georgia and a few minutes later, the documented receipt was displayed on the large screen in the room. All eyes turned on Daven and even Blackman looked intensely at him. He had put a lot of faith
The Hearing 2
Sure enough, Doctor Blackman was on the committee and as soon as his eyes met with Daven’s, he looked away. He wouldn't show any form of favoritism and would only judge according to all the evidence and facts being presented. One of the women, Georgia, took the lead, her gaze piercing through Daven’s. She looked scary, and he had heard tales about her amongst the students. She was known for her brutal decision, and would never show mercy, especially when a woman was the victim. And now, Maya was the perfect victim. “Mr. King, I would like to ask if you have seen the video of you harassing a female student on campus?” Georgia asked. Daven took a deep breath and nodded, “Yes, ma’am.”“Do you plead guilty?”“Not guilty, ma’am,” Daven responded, his sharp eyes on Georgia. She was a bit baffled by his gaze, sharp and asserting as if he damn well knew he was innocent. Deep down, she started to wonder what level of confidence he had and she was determined to break it. “Do you have an
The Hearing
Daven pursed his lips, his eyes gluing down on Dayna and Chris but then they eventually settled on her and they narrowed by the second. For the first time, he decided to entertain their scorn. “Do you think you belong here too, Dayna?” He asked. “Of course…” She chuckled, her hand fanning her face as if she were a goddess just descended on earth. “I got in fair and square, unlike you…” “Using your family connections, I suppose?” He raised a brow at her. Although his situation wasn't that much different from hers, he didn't go around shaming others. “Is there anything else you can brag of?” “What…what do you mean? Are you implying I have no brain whatsoever?” She snapped. “Bingo!” Daven snapped his fingers. “At least, you can think that far with that puny organ of yours.” “Daven! That’s enough!” Chris cut in, his eyes flaming with a burning fury. “You have done nothing but cause numerous disputes and problems, ever since you appeared!” “And now you dare to insult
