Chapter 4

Upon arriving at the hospital, Jason immediately saw that Brena had not moved an inch from her position. Brena was still curled up with her head bowed between her knees. The girl looked desperate for her life.

"Hey, Brena."

Jason called out to Brena, trying to engage her in conversation. However, Brena ignored him completely.

Jason let out a long sigh. The girl's condition really reminded Jason of his own life.

"Brena, can you hear me?" Jason didn't give up and tried once again to get Brena to talk. But as before, Brena completely ignored him.

"I just want to help you. But, if you don't want my help, I'll leave."

Jason began to prepare to leave, at the same time Brena began to look up. Jason smiled as Brena looked at him, the girl's desperation seemed to make Brena realize that there was nothing she could do without someone's help.

"Hey, loser. Is what you just said true?" Brena asked, her eyes blank and lifeless.

Jason coughed at the way Brena called him, calling him a loser was much more popular than Jason thought.

"I didn't expect you to recognize me, haha." Jason laughed awkwardly, between pride and sadness. Proud that a popular figure like Brena recognized him, and sad that Brena recognized him as a loser.

"Of course, who on our campus doesn't recognize you? A stupid loser who does anything for his girlfriend, while the girlfriend he wants to make happy is busy looking for another, richer man." Brena said it all without hesitation, not caring if her words hurt Jason even once.

Jason's expression turned sour, Brena was telling the truth so he had no reason to deny.

"Hey, can we not talk about that?" Jason asked, Lydia-related issues were not something he wanted to think about right now.

A snide laugh escaped Brena's mouth, "Why, does it bother you?"

Jason didn't answer. He was bothered but refused to admit it. To Jason, admitting it would mean he was still expecting Lydia.

"It's obvious you're bothered." Brena spoke with a vengeful look in her cynical eyes. "I'm feeling the same way right now, as you shamelessly try to meddle in my business."

Jason still silently stared at Brena. He just wanted to try to help, there was no other intention.

"Now, what are you going to do?" Brena stood up from her seat. She approached Jason with a sharp look in her eyes, "Are you going to spread my current situation to people? Are you just going to be satisfied after they think that I'm as poor as you are? Are you hoping that by doing that I'll get the nickname of a loser to keep you company?"

Jason looked at Brena with a pitying gaze. The girl's worries were so excessive that she couldn't tell what was important and what wasn't.

Jason's college was famous for its elite students. Most came from wealthy families or the children of local officials. Being born from an ordinary family is already a sin there, let alone poor students like Jason who are at the bottom caste and become the subject of ridicule by other students.

Unlike Jason, whose financial condition was public knowledge, Brena was smart to hide where she came from so that her poverty was not smelled on campus. This is what made Brena popular even though she didn't come from a prominent family like the others.

Jason understood that Brena seemed to be worried that what she had just seen would spread, threatening Brena's college life. Luckily for Brena, Jason had no intention of doing that.

"Hey, does it matter now? Who cares if you're rich or not? I came here to help you, that's all."

Brena gave Jason a probing look. She certainly didn't believe it because Jason looked very suspicious to her.

Jason let out a long sigh realizing the way Brena was looking at him. He had guessed before that Brena wouldn't believe him.

"Can you stop looking at me like that?" Jason put his palms right in front of Brena's eyes, blocking the girl's view to look at him again, "Just tell me how much your mom's surgery costs, I'll pay for it."

"Take your hand away." Brena dismissed Jason's hand. The way she looked at Jason afterward didn't change at all, still as probing as before, "You think I don't know that your economic condition is not much different from mine?"

Jason felt tickled into a chuckle. Maybe it was true that he was poor. However, now he was a man with a trillion dollars in his account.

"Is that funny? Is trying to trick me so much fun for you?" Brena asked, her tone sounding both disgusted and angry.

Jason shook his head. He almost laughed again because he found it funny that someone's fate could suddenly change. Basically he was laughing at his own strange fate, not laughing at Brena, "You misunderstand, I'm not that bad to laugh at your suffering."

"Really?" Brena raised her eyebrows, "If you're really not that bad, please get out of here and stop bothering me."

"What about the help I offered? Do you really not want it?" Jason asked, his kindness not accepted by Brena at all.

The look in Brena's eyes radiated annoyance. She was pretty sure Jason was talking nonsense, so she tried to ignore him. However, because Jason looked so confident and stubborn, Brena, who had had enough, finally thought to give him her account number.

"You want to help me? Here's my account number. Now go away and stop bothering me." Brena said while trying to maintain her remaining patience. She was so tired of thinking about her mother's condition that she had no time to put up with Jason's nonsense.

After getting Brena's account number, Jason with a smile on his face said, "I have already transferred the money. Now, I'll leave as you requested and won't bother you anymore."

Brena only glanced at Jason for a moment before sinking back into her reverie. Jason's words were hard for Brena to take seriously because she knew a lot about Jason who often didn't eat just because he had no money.

"How could someone who can't even eat regularly help pay for my mom's surgery?" Brena muttered after Jason left there.

When Brena was about to go back to thinking about how to get funds for her mother's surgery, she suddenly heard an incoming message on her cell phone.

Brena read the incoming message which turned out to be from the bank where she was a customer. She read the message carefully because messages like this don't usually happen.

"200,000 dollars?" Brena read the amount of the transfer that had just come into her account. She really couldn't believe what she was seeing.

Then, Brena looked at Jason who was walking away. "Is this money from ...."
