We walked for hours.

The Bone Yard stretched in every direction, endless and gray. Rusted metal crunched beneath our feet. The air tasted like iron and dust.

My ribs ached with every step. My left arm dragged behind me, sparking occasionally. Dr. REN-9 had wrapped a piece of cloth around the exposed wires, but it was a temporary fix. I needed real repairs.

Nyx-0 walked beside me in its wolf form, silent and watchful. Its burning-star eyes scanned the horizon constantly.

"You're thinking too loud," it said.

"I'm trying to figure out what's happening."

"That's the problem. You're trying to figure it out. Just accept that you don't know anything."

"Very helpful."

"I try."

Dr. REN-9 stopped ahead of us. She pointed to a cluster of ruins in the distance. Broken domes and collapsed arches, half-buried in rust and dust.

"We're close," she said.

"What is this place?"

"A safe house. One of many. The Resistance uses them to move people and information."

"Resistance?"

She looked at me. "The people who know the truth about the District. About the war. About the First Humans."

I'd heard that term before. First Humans. I didn't know what it meant.

"The First Humans," I said. "What are they?"

Dr. REN-9 was quiet for a moment. Then she said, "They were the ones who came before us. The ones who built the world. The ones the District erased."

I stared at her. "Erased?"

"From history. From memory. From everything. The District made sure no one would remember."

I looked at my mechanical arm. My body. My timer. "But we were built in factories. We were never born."

"That's what they told you."

I felt something shift in my chest. A crack in something I'd always believed.

"Come on," she said. "There's someone you need to meet."

---

The ruins were bigger than I expected. The domes were massive, covered in faded carvings that I couldn't read. Arches stood where walls had once been. Everything was covered in rust and orange dust.

Dr. REN-9 led me through a collapsed entrance and down a set of stairs. The air grew cooler. The light dimmed.

At the bottom was a large underground chamber. Crates and supplies were stacked against the walls. A few people moved around, carrying devices and sorting through parts.

They stopped when they saw me.

A man approached. He was tall and thin, with gray hair and sharp eyes. He wore a long coat similar to Dr. REN-9's, but cleaner.

"So this is him," he said. "The one who bonded with a Null-Type."

"He's injured," Dr. REN-9 said. "His arm needs repairs. His ribs are cracked."

The man studied me. "I'm Voss. I lead this cell. You're lucky Dr. REN-9 found you."

"She saved my life," I said.

"No. Your creature saved your life. She just patched you up." He looked at Nyx-0. "Interesting. A wolf form. It's already evolving."

"It consumed a Core," Dr. REN-9 said. "An ancient one."

Voss's eyes widened. "Which one?"

"The one beneath the old temple. The blue Core."

"That was sealed for a reason."

"It's done now."

Voss looked at me. "You have no idea what you've done, do you?"

"I was trying to survive."

"We all are. But you just woke something that should have stayed asleep."

I didn't understand. "What are you talking about?"

Voss exchanged a glance with Dr. REN-9. Then he said, "The Core you fed your creature wasn't just any Core. It was part of the Celestial Forge. The original machine."

"The Celestial Forge?"

"The reason the world ended. The reason we're all part machine now. The reason the District exists."

My head was spinning. "I don't understand."

Voss stepped closer. "The Celestial Forge was built by the First Humans. It was supposed to create a better world. But the District tried to control it. A war broke out. The Forge exploded. The radiation nearly killed everyone. The survivors had to become part machine to live."

I stared at him. "That's not what the District teaches."

"Of course not. They caused the war. They blame the Beasts instead."

I felt something cold settle in my stomach. "And Nexus? He was part of this?"

"Your friend was close to proving it. That's why the District took him."

I looked at my wrist, at the tattered watch. "He knew the truth?"

"He was one of us," Voss said. "And he paid the price."

I felt something break inside me. Not my ribs this time. Something deeper.

"How do I find the truth?" I asked.

Voss looked at me for a long moment. "First, you survive. Then you fight. And then you remember."

"I can't remember."

"You will. Your creature will help you. Piece by piece. Memory by memory."

I looked at Nyx-0. The wolf stared back.

"Can you give me more?" I asked.

"A fragment," Nyx-0 said. "That's all I can do right now."

I nodded. "Do it."

My vision flickered. A line of text appeared.

[MEMORY FRAGMENT — RECOVERING]

Then I saw it.

A room. Dark. Cold. Nexus was sitting across from me. We were young. He was holding something in his hands.

"I'm going to find the truth," he was saying. "And when I do, I'm coming back for you."

"Promise?"

"Always."

The memory faded.

I blinked. My eyes were wet.

"He promised," I whispered.

"What?" Dr. REN-9 asked.

"He promised he would come back."

She said nothing.

Nyx-0's voice was quiet. "That's all I have for now."

I nodded. It was enough.

I looked at Voss. "What do we do next?"

"Rest. Heal. And then we fight."

I looked at my mechanical arm, my broken ribs, my fading memories.

"Fine," I said. "Let's fight."

  • Chapter 20: Wanted

I read the poster twice before the words stopped sliding around.WANTED FOR TREASON AND CORE THEFT. REWARD, TEN THOUSAND CORES. ALIVE.Ten thousand Cores. One Core could feed me for a month. I had spent my whole life digging through rust for scraps worth a hundredth of that."It's the Resistance's mark," I said. My voice sounded strange in my own ears. "The circle with three lines.""It could be forged," Mira said. She was already stuffing her tablet into her coat. "The District has the mark on file. They've used it before to turn us against each other.""Could be.""But?"I looked at the note again. Bring me the creature. The boy is optional.Nyx-0 had been curled at the foot of my bedroll. It rose now, wolf-shaped, its burning-star eyes fixed on the paper. "That handwriting is not District," it said in my head. "The District writes in printed blocks. Somebody wrote this by hand.""Somebody who wants you and not me.""Somebody who knows what I am."Dr. REN-9 came through the tent fla

  • Chapter 19: Who Heard

We reached the first scavenger camp at dawn.I knew it before I saw it. The smell came first: burnt oil, boiled scrap-moss, and too many people packed into too little space. Then the walls appeared out of the orange haze, a ring of welded Beast plating with a gate made from a single enormous jawbone."Ashfall Camp," Mira said. "Four hundred people. They're on the repeater line, so they should have caught part of the broadcast.""Should have," I said."That's the best I can give you."Kira stopped at the edge of the dust and studied the gate. "I'll stay out here. If the District has eyes on this place, they'll be watching for a group. Better if I'm not part of it.""You're the one who wanted us to move fast," I said."And I still do. Go in, find out what they know, and come back before the sun clears the ridge."She said it smoothly, and it made sense. I still didn't like it.Nyx-0 pressed against my leg, small again, cat-shaped, pretending to be something a scavenger would keep for co

  • Chapter 18: The Silence After

The Spire fell quiet. Not the good kind of quiet. Not the kind where you win and everyone cheers. This was the kind where you shout into a canyon and the canyon doesn't answer.I stood at the top of the broadcast platform with smoke rising off my arm and stared at the sky.Nothing happened. No sirens. No riots. No crowds pouring into the streets."Mira," I said. "Did it work?"She didn't answer. She was bent over the control panel, her hood shoved back, her fingers flying across the keys. Her face had gone pale."Mira.""It went out," she said. "The signal left the tower. I watched it leave.""Then why is nobody screaming?"She looked up. "Because somebody caught it."I didn't like the way she said that.~ ~ ~We didn't wait around to find out who.Dr. REN-9 grabbed my sleeve and dragged me toward the elevator. The soldiers who had surrendered were already backing away, tapping their wrists, whispering into their collars. Zero-One had vanished somewhere in the chaos. That should have

Zero-One raised his hand. The soldiers moved. White armor. Unblinking eyes. They came at us like a wave, weapons raised, boots thundering against the polished floor.I didn't think. I just moved. My mechanical arm came up, and I fired. The energy pulse hit the first soldier square in the chest. He flew backward, crashing into the others behind him. But more kept coming. They were everywhere.Nyx-0 moved like shadow, faster than I'd ever seen it. Its wolf form tore through the soldiers, teeth and claws and burning-star eyes. It took down three before they could even react.Dr. REN-9 was beside me, her device raised. A burst of light shot out, blinding the soldiers closest to us. Mira was running toward the broadcast tower, her fingers already working on the control panel."Cover me!" she shouted.I turned and fired again. Another soldier went down."Zero-One!" I shouted. The man in white was still standing at the top of the stairs, watching. Calm. Unbothered. Like he knew how this woul

  • CHAPTER 17

Dawn came fast. Too fast.I hadn't slept again. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Nexus standing at the Spire, alone, waiting for Zero-One. I saw him fall. I saw them take him away.I couldn't let that happen to me.The Resistance members were already moving when I opened my eyes. Packing bags. Checking weapons. Mira stood at the entrance, watching the horizon."The tunnel entrance is half a mile from here," she said without turning. "We move now, or we don't move at all."I stood up. My ribs ached. My arm hummed. "Let's go."---We moved through the Bone Yard in silence. The sun was still low, casting long shadows across the rust. The air was cold and sharp.Mira led us to a collapsed structure half-buried in debris. She pressed a panel on the wall, and a section of the floor slid open, revealing a dark hole."The tunnel," she said. "It runs for miles beneath the surface. It'll take us close to the Spire.""How close?" I asked."Within a mile. We'll have to travel above ground for t

  • CHAPTER 15

We left the Red Bazaar and moved fast. Mira led us through narrow alleys and hidden passages, moving like someone who knew every corner of the Bone Yard. Her hood was pulled low, hiding her face. But I could see her eyes. Sharp. Watchful. "The Spire is three days from here," she said. "Maybe more. The terrain is dangerous, and the District patrols heavily." "I don't care how long it takes," I said. "You should. Every day you delay, the District gets stronger." I looked at my wrist. At the watch. "Then we move faster." Mira stopped and turned to face me. "You really are like him." "Who?" "Nexus. He used to say the same thing. Always pushing. Always moving." I felt a strange warmth in my chest. "What happened to him?" She was quiet for a moment. "He got too close. The District knew he was coming. They were waiting for him." "Where?" "At the Spire. He was trying to do the same thing you're trying to do now." I stared at her. "He tried to broadcast the truth?" "Yes. He almo
