I slept for twelve hours.

When I woke up, my ribs still ached but the sharp pain had dulled to a deep throb. My mechanical arm was gone. In its place, a temporary brace held my shoulder together.

Dr. REN-9 was sitting nearby, working on something at her table.

"Your arm is being repaired," she said without looking up. "It'll take a few hours. You have to wait."

I sat up slowly. "Where's Nyx-0?"

"Outside. Watching. It doesn't trust anyone here."

"Smart."

"It said the same thing about you."

I almost smiled.

I looked around the chamber. Crates stacked against the walls. Maps pinned to a board. A few people moving quietly, carrying supplies and devices.

"Where's Voss?" I asked.

"He left. Something came up. He'll be back."

I stood up. My legs were shaky, but they held.

"Tell me more about the Resistance," I said. "About the First Humans."

Dr. REN-9 set down her tool and looked at me. "You sure you want to hear it?"

"I need to know."

She nodded slowly. "The First Humans were fully human. Flesh and blood. Born, not built. They created the Celestial Forge to solve their problems. To create energy, resources, life itself."

"And the District?"

"They tried to take it. The Forge was too powerful to control. A war broke out. The Forge exploded and poisoned the world."

I sat down across from her. "So the District caused the war."

"Yes. They started it, they lost control, and they blamed the Beasts."

"But why? Why lie about all of it?"

"Because the truth would destroy them. The people would revolt. The District would fall. So they erased history. They made everyone forget."

I looked at my mechanical arm. "And the machines? The timers?"

"All part of the lie. The timers keep everyone in line. Without them, people would have time to think. To remember. To fight."

I felt something cold settle in my chest. "So Nexus found out the truth."

"Yes. He was close to proving it when they took him."

"And they recycled him. Erased him completely."

Dr. REN-9 was quiet for a moment. Then she said, "That's what they do to anyone who gets too close to the truth."

I looked at the watch on my wrist. Nexus's watch. I couldn't remember his face, but I could remember his voice.

The memory fragment from last night was still there. Fresh. He had promised he would come back.

He never did.

I looked at Dr. REN-9. "What happened to him? The truth?"

"His body was recycled. His parts were used to build someone else. That's what the District does."

I felt something tighten in my chest. "Then I'll find that person. I'll find whatever's left of him."

"That's not how it works."

"I don't care."

She studied me for a long moment. "You're determined. I'll give you that."

"I have nothing else."

The entrance to the chamber opened, and Voss walked in. He looked tired, but his eyes were sharp.

"We have a problem," he said. "The District knows about the safe house. They're sending soldiers."

I stood up. "How long?"

"Two hours. Maybe less."

Dr. REN-9 grabbed her bag. "We need to move."

"Where?"

"There's another safe house. Deeper in the Bone Yard. But we need to get there before they find us."

I looked at my mechanical arm. The brace was holding it together, but it wasn't a real repair.

"How do I fight with this?" I asked.

Voss looked at me. "You don't. You run."

"Running is all I'm good at."

"Then run."

Nyx-0 appeared at the entrance. Its wolf form was sleek and solid.

"Nova," it said. "We have company."

I looked at Voss. "What do I do?"

"Follow Dr. REN-9. She'll get you to the next safe house. I'll hold them off."

"With what?"

Voss smiled. It was a thin, tired smile. "I've been doing this longer than you've been alive. Trust me."

I didn't argue.

Dr. REN-9 grabbed my good arm. "Come on."

We ran.

---

The Bone Yard stretched ahead, endless and gray. Rusted metal crunched beneath my boots. My ribs ached. My legs burned.

But I kept running.

Nyx-0 ran beside me, faster than before. Its wolf form was powerful and steady.

"We're almost there," Dr. REN-9 said.

I didn't see anything. Just more rust and metal.

Then I saw it.

A massive structure rose from the ground. Half-buried in rust and dust. It looked like a broken dome, covered in faded carvings.

"Another safe house?" I asked.

"Something better," Dr. REN-9 said. "The Resistance's main base. The place where we hold the truth."

She pressed a panel on the wall, and a door slid open.

"Welcome," she said, "to the truth."

I stepped inside.

The chamber was massive. Hundreds of people moved through it, carrying supplies, working on devices, and speaking in hushed voices.

Maps covered the walls. Ancient artifacts sat on tables. Screens displayed data I couldn't read.

"What is this place?" I whispered.

"The beginning," Dr. REN-9 said. "The place where we build the future."

I stared at everything. At the people. The maps. The artifacts.

This was real. The Resistance was real.

And I was part of it now.

Nyx-0's voice was quiet. "You're going to change the world, Nova. I can feel it."

I looked at my wrist, at the tattered watch.

"I just want to remember Nexus," I said.

Nyx-0 was silent for a moment.

"You will," it said. "I promise."

  • Chapter 20: Wanted

I read the poster twice before the words stopped sliding around.WANTED FOR TREASON AND CORE THEFT. REWARD, TEN THOUSAND CORES. ALIVE.Ten thousand Cores. One Core could feed me for a month. I had spent my whole life digging through rust for scraps worth a hundredth of that."It's the Resistance's mark," I said. My voice sounded strange in my own ears. "The circle with three lines.""It could be forged," Mira said. She was already stuffing her tablet into her coat. "The District has the mark on file. They've used it before to turn us against each other.""Could be.""But?"I looked at the note again. Bring me the creature. The boy is optional.Nyx-0 had been curled at the foot of my bedroll. It rose now, wolf-shaped, its burning-star eyes fixed on the paper. "That handwriting is not District," it said in my head. "The District writes in printed blocks. Somebody wrote this by hand.""Somebody who wants you and not me.""Somebody who knows what I am."Dr. REN-9 came through the tent fla

  • Chapter 19: Who Heard

We reached the first scavenger camp at dawn.I knew it before I saw it. The smell came first: burnt oil, boiled scrap-moss, and too many people packed into too little space. Then the walls appeared out of the orange haze, a ring of welded Beast plating with a gate made from a single enormous jawbone."Ashfall Camp," Mira said. "Four hundred people. They're on the repeater line, so they should have caught part of the broadcast.""Should have," I said."That's the best I can give you."Kira stopped at the edge of the dust and studied the gate. "I'll stay out here. If the District has eyes on this place, they'll be watching for a group. Better if I'm not part of it.""You're the one who wanted us to move fast," I said."And I still do. Go in, find out what they know, and come back before the sun clears the ridge."She said it smoothly, and it made sense. I still didn't like it.Nyx-0 pressed against my leg, small again, cat-shaped, pretending to be something a scavenger would keep for co

  • Chapter 18: The Silence After

The Spire fell quiet. Not the good kind of quiet. Not the kind where you win and everyone cheers. This was the kind where you shout into a canyon and the canyon doesn't answer.I stood at the top of the broadcast platform with smoke rising off my arm and stared at the sky.Nothing happened. No sirens. No riots. No crowds pouring into the streets."Mira," I said. "Did it work?"She didn't answer. She was bent over the control panel, her hood shoved back, her fingers flying across the keys. Her face had gone pale."Mira.""It went out," she said. "The signal left the tower. I watched it leave.""Then why is nobody screaming?"She looked up. "Because somebody caught it."I didn't like the way she said that.~ ~ ~We didn't wait around to find out who.Dr. REN-9 grabbed my sleeve and dragged me toward the elevator. Zero-One raised his hand. The soldiers moved. White armor. Unblinking eyes. They came at us like a wave, weapons raised, boots thundering against the polished floor.I didn't think. I just moved. My mechanical arm came up, and I fired. The energy pulse hit the first soldier square in the chest. He flew backward, crashing into the others behind him. But more kept coming. They were everywhere.Nyx-0 moved like shadow, faster than I'd ever seen it. Its wolf form tore through the soldiers, teeth and claws and burning-star eyes. It took down three before they could even react.Dr. REN-9 was beside me, her device raised. A burst of light shot out, blinding the soldiers closest to us. Mira was running toward the broadcast tower, her fingers already working on the control panel."Cover me!" she shouted.I turned and fired again. Another soldier went down."Zero-One!" I shouted. The man in white was still standing at the top of the stairs, watching. Calm. Unbothered. Like he knew how this woul

  • CHAPTER 17

Dawn came fast. Too fast.I hadn't slept again. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Nexus standing at the Spire, alone, waiting for Zero-One. I saw him fall. I saw them take him away.I couldn't let that happen to me.The Resistance members were already moving when I opened my eyes. Packing bags. Checking weapons. Mira stood at the entrance, watching the horizon."The tunnel entrance is half a mile from here," she said without turning. "We move now, or we don't move at all."I stood up. My ribs ached. My arm hummed. "Let's go."---We moved through the Bone Yard in silence. The sun was still low, casting long shadows across the rust. The air was cold and sharp.Mira led us to a collapsed structure half-buried in debris. She pressed a panel on the wall, and a section of the floor slid open, revealing a dark hole."The tunnel," she said. "It runs for miles beneath the surface. It'll take us close to the Spire.""How close?" I asked."Within a mile. We'll have to travel above ground for t

  • CHAPTER 15

We left the Red Bazaar and moved fast. Mira led us through narrow alleys and hidden passages, moving like someone who knew every corner of the Bone Yard. Her hood was pulled low, hiding her face. But I could see her eyes. Sharp. Watchful. "The Spire is three days from here," she said. "Maybe more. The terrain is dangerous, and the District patrols heavily." "I don't care how long it takes," I said. "You should. Every day you delay, the District gets stronger." I looked at my wrist. At the watch. "Then we move faster." Mira stopped and turned to face me. "You really are like him." "Who?" "Nexus. He used to say the same thing. Always pushing. Always moving." I felt a strange warmth in my chest. "What happened to him?" She was quiet for a moment. "He got too close. The District knew he was coming. They were waiting for him." "Where?" "At the Spire. He was trying to do the same thing you're trying to do now." I stared at her. "He tried to broadcast the truth?" "Yes. He almo
