Chapter 1
My name is Nova Miles-7. I know. Weird name. Number and all. The District gave it to me. They needed a serial number. Nova Miles wasn't specific enough, so they added a seven. Whatever. I'm used to it. I'm nineteen. Still poor. Still hungry. Still wearing mismatched boots. Both left feet. Don't judge me. --- Nobody remembers being born. I don't. You probably think that's strange. It isn't here. The District gives you a body, a name, a timer, and a place to work. That's all anyone needs. At least, that's what they tell us. I live in the Bone Yard. It's a graveyard. Miles of dead Beast parts. Skulls, legs, torsos. Everything covered in rust and orange dust. The air tastes like metal. I'm a scavenger. I dig through the dead ones to find Cores. One Core can feed me for a month. If I'm lucky, it adds a few hours to my timer. On my palm, the numbers tick down. 2 YEARS, 47 DAYS, 6 HOURS. I check it constantly. Everyone does. You learn to live with the countdown. The numbers n

I hit the ground.Or I would have. Nyx-0 moved fast, pressing its small body against my chest, and a strange warmth spread through the black mark on my skin. The air around us thickened and slowed. I felt something cushion the impact, not enough to stop us completely but enough to keep me alive.I crashed through rusted metal and heard my ribs crack. My left arm, the mechanical one, twisted wrong and sparked. Pain shot through my body like fire, but it was different from normal pain, sharper and colder where the metal met the flesh. Then everything went dark.---When I woke up, I was staring at a stone ceiling with cracks running through it like veins. Warm orange light flickered from somewhere nearby, and the air smelled different, like old cloth and dried herbs.I tried to move, but my ribs screamed in protest. My left arm hung useless, the joints grinding and sparking occasionally."Stay still," a voice said from beside me, old and female and heavy with exhaustion.I turned my hea
CHAPTER 3
I ran.My legs screamed. My ribs burned. My mechanical arm dragged behind me, sparking with every step. But I ran.The tunnel stretched ahead, dark and endless. Behind me, the growl grew louder. Deeper. It vibrated through the stone, through my bones, through the metal in my arm.Dr. REN-9 moved faster than I expected for someone her age. She ducked through narrow passages and around fallen debris, her gray coat trailing behind her."This way!" she shouted. "There's an exit ahead!"I didn't ask how she knew. I just followed.Nyx-0 clung to my shoulder. Its form flickered, weaker than before."Nova.""What?""Whatever that thing is. It's old. Older than me.""Older than you?""Much older. And it's hungry."I didn't have time to process that. The tunnel opened into a wider chamber, and I saw it.Light. Faint. Blue. Coming from somewhere ahead. The Core.It sat on a stone pedestal in the center of the chamber, pulsing with a soft blue glow. It was massive. Bigger than any Core I'd ever s
CHAPTER 4
We walked for hours. The Bone Yard stretched in every direction, endless and gray. Rusted metal crunched beneath our feet. The air tasted like iron and dust.My ribs ached with every step. My left arm dragged behind me, sparking occasionally. Dr. REN-9 had wrapped a piece of cloth around the exposed wires, but it was a temporary fix. I needed real repairs.Nyx-0 walked beside me in its wolf form, silent and watchful. Its burning-star eyes scanned the horizon constantly."You're thinking too loud," it said."I'm trying to figure out what's happening.""That's the problem. You're trying to figure it out. Just accept that you don't know anything.""Very helpful.""I try."Dr. REN-9 stopped ahead of us. She pointed to a cluster of ruins in the distance. Broken domes and collapsed arches, half-buried in rust and dust."We're close," she said."What is this place?""A safe house. One of many. The Resistance uses them to move people and information.""Resistance?"She looked at me. "The peop
CHAPTER 5
I slept for twelve hours. When I woke up, my ribs still ached but the sharp pain had dulled to a deep throb. My mechanical arm was gone. In its place, a temporary brace held my shoulder together.Dr. REN-9 was sitting nearby, working on something at her table."Your arm is being repaired," she said without looking up. "It'll take a few hours. You have to wait."I sat up slowly. "Where's Nyx-0?""Outside. Watching. It doesn't trust anyone here.""Smart.""It said the same thing about you."I almost smiled.I looked around the chamber. Crates stacked against the walls. Maps pinned to a board. A few people moving quietly, carrying supplies and devices."Where's Voss?" I asked."He left. Something came up. He'll be back."I stood up. My legs were shaky, but they held."Tell me more about the Resistance," I said. "About the First Humans."Dr. REN-9 set down her tool and looked at me. "You sure you want to hear it?""I need to know."She nodded slowly. "The First Humans were fully human. Fl
CHAPTER 6
The Resistance base was enormous.I walked through the main chamber with Dr. REN-9 beside me, trying to take it all in. People moved everywhere, carrying crates and devices, speaking in low voices. The air hummed with energy, faint and constant.Maps covered the walls. Some were old, yellowed and cracked. Others were new, marked with symbols I didn't understand. Screens displayed data that flickered and changed."This is incredible," I said.Dr. REN-9 nodded. "It took decades to build. Generations. We've been hiding and growing for a long time.""Waiting for what?"She looked at me. "For someone like you."I didn't know what to say to that.A woman approached. She was tall and sharp-eyed, with short dark hair and a scar running down her left cheek. She wore a dark coat and carried a device on her belt."So this is him," she said. "The one who bonded with a Null-Type.""This is Nova," Dr. REN-9 said. "Nova, this is Kira. She's one of our leaders."Kira studied me. Her eyes were cold, a
CHAPTER 7
The soldiers marched closer.White armor gleaming against the orange dust. Six of them. Maybe more. They moved in perfect formation, their boots crunching against the rusted metal.I flexed my new arm. The joints moved smoothly, silently."How do we do this?" I asked.Dr. REN-9 looked at me. "We don't fight them head-on. We use the terrain. The ruins. We make them come to us.""Then what?""Then we survive."She moved quickly, ducking behind a collapsed wall. I followed her, Nyx-0 close behind. The soldiers stopped at the edge of the ruins. Their commander raised a device, scanning the area."Anomaly detected," he said. "The creature is nearby."I pressed myself against the wall. My heart pounded."Wait," Dr. REN-9 whispered. "Wait for them to spread out."The soldiers split into pairs. Two went left. Two went right. Two came straight toward us."Now," she said.I moved. Fast. Faster than I'd ever moved. My new arm responded instantly, propelling me forward. The first soldier didn't s
CHAPTER 8
I woke to the sound of metal scraping against metal. My eyes snapped open. My body tensed. My new arm hummed, ready to move.Dr. REN-9 was already standing, her device in hand. "Something's coming."I stood up. My ribs still ached, but the sharp pain was gone. My arm felt strong. Ready.Nyx-0 appeared beside me, its wolf form low and alert."Two of them," it said. "Moving fast. Not soldiers.""Then what?""I don't know. But they're not wearing armor."I moved to the entrance of the collapsed structure and peered out. Two figures were approaching through the ruins. They moved quickly, weaving through the debris with practiced ease. One was tall and thin, with dark hair and a scarred face. The other was shorter, broader, carrying something on their back."They're Resistance," Dr. REN-9 said. "I recognize them."She stepped out and raised her hand. The figures slowed."Dr. REN-9," the tall one called. "Thank the Forge. We've been looking for you.""What happened?""The safe house. The on
CHAPTER 9
Nobody spoke for a long time. The blue light had faded completely, leaving us in near darkness. My optical implants adjusted, giving me a faint green-tinted view of the chamber. Rourke and Sena had lit small lamps, casting weak orange light across the ancient metal structure.I stared at my palm.2 YEARS, 33 DAYS, 12 HOURS.A lie. My whole life was a lie. Every fear. Every desperate moment of survival. Every time I'd watched the numbers tick down and felt that cold dread in my chest. None of it was real. The District had done this. They had built the timers, given them to everyone, and let us believe we were dying. They controlled us through fear. Through desperation. Through the constant threat of death.I felt my mechanical hand clench into a fist."Nova." Dr. REN-9's voice was quiet. Careful. "We should move. That thing could wake up again.""It's not waking up," I said. "It was talking. To me.""I know. That's what concerns me."Nyx-0 moved closer, its wolf form solid and watchful
CHAPTER 10
Dawn came slowly. The sky shifted from deep gray to pale orange, and the rusted landscape emerged from the darkness. I sat up, my body stiff and aching. My mechanical arm hummed softly, ready.Dr. REN-9 was already awake, packing her bag. She moved quietly, efficiently, like someone who had done this a thousand times."We need to move," she said. "The Red Bazaar is a long walk."I stood up. My ribs protested, but the pain was manageable. I flexed my mechanical fingers and watched them respond instantly.Nyx-0 appeared at the entrance of the structure. Its wolf form was solid and strong."There are patrols in the distance," it said. "They're searching the area.""How far?""Two miles. Moving away from us. They don't know we're here.""Good," Dr. REN-9 said. "Let's keep it that way."We moved out, walking quickly across the rusted terrain. The Bone Yard stretched endlessly in every direction, a graveyard of metal and memory."Tell me about the Red Bazaar," I said."It's a black market,"
