Chapter 4: The Status of a Weakling Part 2

Permanent reduction? These systems don't mess around.

He stared at the broken bedroom window. The sun still shone outside, but the sky was stained purple by the portals. Screams still echoed. He couldn't stand still. If he did, more of those things would come. And he still needed to complete the mission.

"Alright…" he said, gripping the hilt of his sword. "Time to stop being the nerd who hid under the bed."

He used one of the Complete Recovery Potions from the starter pack. A soft blue light enveloped his body, completely closing the wound on his arm and neck. The exhaustion vanished. He felt renewed.

Before leaving the apartment, Xander did something his former self would never have done: he searched the monster's body with his bare hands and cut off one of its tentacles with his sword, storing it in the makeshift inventory the system had created (5 free slots).

Omniscient Analysis: Riverview Building.

A simple holographic map opened in his mind. Red dots flashed on almost every floor. There were at least 27 living monsters in the entire building. Most were concentrated on floors 1 through 4 and 10 through 12. His floor (7th) seemed relatively clear now, except for one or two faint signs.

"Starting with my own territory," he murmured.

He went out into the hallway.

The smell was awful. Blood, feces, rotting flesh. Three human bodies were scattered in the hallway. Two of them had been completely emptied, leaving only flabby skin over bones. The third still had half its face. Xander recognized Mr. Mendes, the grumpy old man from 703.

He felt a pang of pity, but quickly suppressed it.

If I were as weak as I used to be, I'd be like them. Feeling sorry for them won't keep me alive.

He walked to the stairs. The elevator was out of the question—he'd seen enough movies to know that an elevator in an apocalypse meant certain death.

On the landing between the 7th and 6th floors, he encountered the first monster.

It was a smaller creature. It looked like a rat the size of a large dog, with bony spines on its back and multiple eyes. Above it floated:

[Spine Rat – Level 3]

Xander activated Omniscient Analysis again.

Weakness: Central eyes. Fire. Quick attacks to the head.

The rat saw him and squeaked, running towards him with surprising speed.

Xander did not back down.

His agility was now 31. He took a side step faster than he had ever thought possible and brought his sword down in a clean arc. The blade sliced the rat in half with a wet sound.

[You killed Spine Rat (Level 3)]

[XP: 85]

[Nexus Points: +8]

"Just nine more," he said, feeling a wave of satisfaction.

He went down to the 6th floor.

The hallway was dark. The emergency lights flickered faintly. There was blood on the walls, forming strange patterns, as if something had deliberately painted it.

Two Spine Rats emerged from a destroyed apartment, followed by a larger version — a [Spine Rat Alpha – Level 5].

Xander smiled.

Perfect. Three at once.

He didn't wait for them to attack. He moved forward.

The first rat jumped. Xander spun his body and slashed it in mid-air. The second tried to bite his leg—he stomped on its head with brutal force, crushing its skull. The Alpha was smarter. It spat bony spines like projectiles.

Xander rolled to the side. Two thorns tore through his shirt, but missed the flesh. He moved quickly and plunged his sword into the creature's open mouth, twisting the blade inside its brain.

[You killed Spine Rat (Level 3) x 2]

[You killed Spine Rat Alpha (Level 5)]

[XP total: 420]

[Nexus Points: +35]

He was breathing faster now, but not from tiredness. From excitement.

This... this is addictive.

While collecting the drops (more blood crystals and a "Reinforced Bone Thorn"), Xander realized his mind was changing. The fear was still there, deep down, but it had been pushed back by something stronger: ambition.

He had always been invisible. A mediocre programmer who could barely pay the rent. Now, with the power of the Nexus Administrator System, he had the chance to become someone people would follow. Someone who would dictate the rules.

"Authority: Grant System…" he repeated the skill's name in a low voice. "When I reach level 10, I will choose very carefully who deserves a System. Absolute loyalty will be the price."

He continued down.

On the 5th floor he found a different creature. A deformed humanoid being, as if a man had been fused with an insect. Half of its face was still human—it was the pizza delivery guy who always brought food to Xander.

[Hybrid Drone – Level 4]

The creature attacked him with long claws. Xander used his newfound agility to dodge and counterattack. The fight lasted almost a full minute. He was learning. Testing angles, observing movement patterns through Omniscient Analysis.

When he finally cut off the creature's head, he received an additional 110 XP and 15 NP.

He had already killed 6 monsters.

On the 4th floor things got more dangerous. Three level 5 monsters appeared at the same time — a pack of Blood Leech Hound pups, smaller than the first, but still lethal.

The fight was bloody.

One of them managed to bite his left shoulder before Xander could react. The pain was excruciating. He screamed, but didn't stop. He used his rage to propel a downward blow that split the first dog in two. Then he spun and struck the second in the neck.

The third one jumped onto his back. Xander fell to his knees, feeling the tentacles begin to suck blood. For a second, the old panic returned.

No. I'm not that weakling from Force 4 anymore!

He rolled, smashing the creature against the ground, and thrust his sword upwards through its mouth.

[You killed a Blood Leech Hound Juvenile (Level 5) x 3]

[XP: 780]

[Level increased to 2!]

A wave of pure energy flooded his body. His attributes automatically received +2 points each. He used the 5 undistributed points he still had, plus the 2 new ones, in Vitality and Willpower.

His wounds stopped bleeding so quickly. The pain lessened.

Xander stood up, panting, covered in blood from head to toe. His eyes gleamed with a new coldness.

"Status."

He opened the screen again just to see the updated numbers. Still a pathetic base. The current situation is getting worse and worse.

"I am no longer weak," he said to himself, looking down the dark corridor. "I am the Administrator."

He still needed to kill one more monster to complete the daily mission, but he decided to keep climbing. He wanted to clear as much of the building as possible before nightfall. Each monster killed meant experience, points, and, most importantly, safety.

As he climbed back up the stairs, he heard a noise on the 8th floor. A sound of human crying mixed with growls.

Someone was still alive.

Xander gripped the sword tighter.

Perhaps it's time to test if I can find someone compatible enough to receive a System in the future…

He smiled. A smile that no longer held any trace of the frightened nerd hiding under the bed.

The building was still full of monsters.

And Xander Voss was only just beginning to hunt.
