Only at that moment did Finn snap out of his thoughts. "Ah, no uncle," he shook his head sideways and looked at the dollar notes in Kael's hand.

Bowing slightly, he said, "Thank you uncle, but my mummy told us not to accept favors from strangers. Also, we are not beggars. We have already gone to an orphanage. They will take us in soon."

His words made Kael pause. So these children were orphans after all. It's so unfortunate because they are clearly so young.

They should be just about eight or nine years old. Alas, there were several other homeless children like this all over the world.

Even though he had once dreamed of protecting everyone, he knew there were misfortunes even a soldier could not prevent.

Kael sighed and squatted down to pat Finn's hair. If he is not wrong, his and Bridget's son should be around this boy's age or just a bit younger.

Kael's eyes moved to Isla, her big eyes sparkling beautifully. And if Bridget had given birth to a girl, then she would be around this girl's age.

Perhaps out of compassion or pity, for some reason, Kael found himself unwilling to let these children go.

So he brought out a small jotter and tore off a sheet. Then he scribbled a phone number on it and gave the paper to Finn.

"This is my phone number. If you ever run into trouble, just call me. Don't lose the paper."

After saying this, Kael steeled his resolve, stood up and turned to leave. His mind was dead set on returning home.

He didn't want to waste any more time. He had already done the best he could. But when Finn saw him leaving, the little boy couldn't explain the sudden need he felt to open his mouth.

"Uncle!"

Kael halted and turned back.

"We didn't do anything bad," Finn shook his head sideways. "We didn't steal anything. We thought no one wanted the food because no one was at the table for a long time. We didn't steal..."

Hearing the boy's explanation, a warm smile spread on Kael's lips. "I believe you."

With this, he turned away and waved goodbye. Watching his departing figure, Finn's heart tightened painfully and he clutched the hems of his shorts tightly.

Why does it feel like he doesn't want this uncle to leave?

And just now, he couldn't really say why he felt the need to explain himself to that stranger...

As if he was afraid of disappointing a man he has never met before.

The sun was beginning to set when a young man arrived at a mountain top villa located in Skyhaven Residences.

It was the only villa located on a mountain top and it formerly belonged to the young mistress of the Sterling's family, Bridget.

The young man stood outside the villa for a minute before walking into the courtyard.

He stood at the entrance, constantly adjusting his collar, combing his fingers into his unkempt hair and checking for creases on his clothes.

He was visibly nervous. He hadn't been home for several years and it was evident that a lot had changed. For instance, the security officer who used to guard the villa was no longer there.

Luckily, he still remembered the old security code and managed to get in. But that was the least of his worries now.

All he kept on thinking was how Bridget would react when she saw him again. What expression would she have? Would she be surprised? Excited? Or perhaps even mad at him?

"She would probably be angry," Kael sighed helplessly and stroked his beard.

His wife had quite a bit of temper. She would have definitely held a grudge against him for not reaching out to her for years. He was indeed at fault.

He didn't expect to lose his phone as soon as he got to the military camp. Shortly after, he was shortlisted among special forces.

The place he was deployed to had no network signal at all so he couldn't even get a new mobile until when he was returning to Solara city.

Kael inhaled deeply and knocked on the door lightly. "Bridget! I'm back!"

At the same time, every single high ranking official in Solara city received a notification from the provincial capital. The instructions were simple.[Gather your forces around Sunshine Orphanage. No one is allowed to go in or leave without permission from the King of Valor. If anyone dares to resist, shoot on site!]Meanwhile, in one of the rooms built just below the orphanage ground floor, a little boy was tied to the pillar. His eyes were fixated on the doctor standing beside the small bed positioned in one corner of the room. The young boy appeared very anxious, but because his mouth was gagged, he couldn't make any audible sound.A middle-aged man with a dirty goatee was standing beside the pillar, puffing out heavy smoke from the tobacco pipe in his hand. His lips curled up in a sinister way and he snarled at the boy, "You little bastard, if you dare steal someone's phone and try to snitch again, I'll break your arms.""I took you in to make money for me, not land me in jail,"

Outside the villa, Rowan looked up at the gigantic gate and gave an exhausted sigh. "What do we do now, Kael? It's obvious that Ivan won't back down. Those foolish noble families will obviously believe you two are acquainted.""Let it be," Kael shrugged nonchalantly. He really didn't care about Ivan's threats. The latter has no evidence of their acquaintance.Besides, if he wanted, he could easily expose Ivan's lies and trample on him with a few words. But as long as Ivan heed to their warnings and stop his foolish actions, he will let him survive.RING!RING!Kael's phone suddenly chimed loudly in his pockets. When he saw the caller ID flashing on the phone screen, his brows furrowed at the unknown number. He answered the call and lifted the phone to his ear with a hint of suspicion. As soon as the call connected, an urgent, childish voice came through the line."Uncle... uncle... Please, save my sister!"Kael's eyes widened slightly because he remembered the voice clearly. It was th

Ivan Sterling smirked at them, believing they were already intimidated by his words. He originally planned to bury the hatchet and have a good conversation with his older brother. But now it was obvious that Rowan didn't even want to acknowledge him.And as for Kael, Ivan didn't really care much about him. He was just a loser who had been lucky enough to return home safely. There is no reason to pay any special attention to a nobody like him."The last time I checked, that villa is in Bridget's name. Who are you to decide who gets it?" Rowan posed a calm question, watching his younger brother's face carefully."Humph! That slut is no longer alive. Should I just let her villa rot?"Kael's eyes darkened with fury. "She is your niece. Isn't it a bit too much to call her a slut?""Hahaha!" Ivan cackled mockingly as his gaze swept over Kael's frame. "Kid, have you forgotten that your father-in-law is no longer alive? A loser who married into our family has no right to interfere in our affa

"Humph! Why should I care about him? They are so poor and disgusting. It makes my skin crawl just thinking we'll be standing under the same roof," Serena Sterling spat out disdainfully."If it wasn't because of that bitch Bridget that gave them her villa before she died, they would have been living in the slums."THUD!She kicked a servant passing by, making the man trip and hit his face on the floor. Then she scolded him, "Can't you watch where you are going? You almost made me lose my footing. Now hurry up and clean this dirty footprint from the floor."The servant looked down at the floor shamefully. His fingers clenched but he didn't dare talk back.Instead, he hurriedly stood up and bowed. "I'm sorry, miss. I'll clean the dirty stain right away."The servant had only just begun to clean the stain when the entrance door swung open. Rowan and Kael appeared at the entrance, as they quietly scrutinized the grand decorations. As soon as Ivan noticed them, he hurried to meet them and u

"At the very least, the assets should be in your name," Ida's gaze turned sharp and determined as she spoke. "Neither me or your uncle, nor Ivan's family deserve to inherit the fortune left by your father-in-law."She held Kael's hands and informed him bitterly, "Listen, you have been away for so long so you don't know many things that happened in your absence. After your father-in-law was killed, your uncle and I hid away in fear but guess what your uncle Ivan did."Her words caught Kael's attention. His brows knitted and he asked her calmly, "What did he do? I know he was always at loggerheads with father, but he wouldn't do anything extreme, right?""Ivan and his family took advantage of the situation and directly joined forces with Rutherford's family!" Ida snapped resentfully."All because they coveted the family fortune, they disregarded their familial ties and dignity."Just saying the words made Ida boil angrily. Thinking of what Ivan and his family had done when they needed t

Kael stopped reading for a minute. His vision clouded and he was filled with grief. A tear dropped on the page as he read the last entry.[It's almost nine years now.
