At this moment, Oscar's phone suddenly rang.

He was startled and immediately looked at the phone, his first thought being that the government had somehow discovered what was happening.

Could they have already found out that he was connected to the strange incident in the capital?

His hand reached for the phone quickly, but when he saw the name on the screen, his expression changed.

“Charlotte?”

The screen showed her name with several heart and kissing emojis beside it.

Oscar stared at it for a moment.

Charlotte was the girl he had loved before and even date for more than six years.

Back when they were in free high school together, Oscar had always been the one doing things for her. He was an orphan, so he had to work odd jobs whenever he needed money, although he never had to worry about school fees because he had been a scholarship student.

He was naturally smart, especially when it came to subjects like Geography, History, and Economics, but university was different. Because he spent so much time doing part-time jobs, he couldn't concentrate on his studies the way he had in high school.

In the end, he graduated from university with a third-class degree in Geography.

Charlotte had studied History, and for a long time, Oscar had believed that the two of them would remain together till marriage. However, after they entered college, Gideon Walter slowly appeared in their relationship.

Gideon was a rich young man, although he wasn't from one of the most powerful families. At first, whenever Oscar asked Charlotte about him, she would always deny having anything to do with him.

“No, Oscar. Gideon is just a friend.”

Oscar had believed her.

Unfortunately, things slowly changed.

By their final year, Charlotte was spending more and more time with Gideon, and Oscar was still working odd jobs to support himself and help her whenever he could.

He had bought things for her, paid for some of her needs, and even helped with her clothes, bags and other expenses in school.

When he eventually went to Charlotte's parents and told them about everything he had done for their daughter and that he wanted to marry her, he expected them to accept his proposal at once.

Instead, they laughed at him.

They called him a liar and said there was no way someone as poor as him could have taken care of Charlotte. According to them, Gideon was the one who had been spending money on her and Charlotte didn't even try to stand up for him or speak the truth.

That day, Oscar had been humiliated so badly that he had wished the ground would simply open and swallow him.

And now Charlotte was calling him?

Oscar rubbed his chin.

It was often said that when someone's life begins to turn around, the people who had once rejected them would suddenly come back. Could this be one of those situations?

If that was the case, then Oscar didn't mind taking Charlotte back.

All she had to do was apologize. She was his first love after all.

But she had better not have slept with Gideon!

Oscar finally answered the call.

“Hello?”

Charlotte's voice immediately came from the other side, “Oh, you're alive?”

Oscar raised his eyebrows, “Yes, I'm alive.”

“Do you still know who you're talking to?” he just had to ask to make sure she didn't dial the wrong number.

“Oscar Kingston,” she said calmly. “Of course I know who I called.”

Oscar remained silent for a moment.

Charlotte then said, “I'm going straight to the point.”

“Yeah, definitely. Go straight to the point.” Oscar leaned against the wall and waited. He thought she was finally going to apologize.

Instead, Charlotte asked, “Do you have some rice?”

"..."

Oscar blinked. “Rice?”

“Yes. Do you have some rice? And water?”

He stared at the phone in disbelief.

Charlotte continued, “I already called the emergency officials, and I gave them your address. Just give them some rice when they arrive. It's for my mother and grandmother. If you have water too, give it to them. Make it 10 litres.”

Oscar's expression became strange. “Wait, wait, what are you saying, Charlotte?”

“You heard me. The officers are coming. Their names are Marcus and Ethan. Just give them the rice and water.”

Oscar couldn't help asking, “Are you asking me to give you rice?”

“Of course.”

“But why?”

Charlotte sounded impatient. “Come on, Oscar Kingston. You don't have a family to take care of. I have a family to take care of, okay? My mother and grandmother are here. Gideon is also here with us because he was locked inside with us.”

Oscar's expression immediately became cold when he heard Gideon's name.

Charlotte continued, “And Gideon can't even eat mincely. You know he's a rich guy and he's used to eating three cups of rice, so you need to send enough for everyone.”

Oscar almost laughed.

He had never imagined that this was the reason Charlotte had called him.

“Charlotte, our relationship ended last year.”

“So?”

“So we haven't spoken for months," Oscar pointed out. But Charlotte was shameless.

“I know.”

“And the first thing you ask me for is rice?”

Charlotte didn't seem to think there was anything strange about it. “Yes. So what's the problem?”

Oscar looked toward the small amount of rice he had left in his apartment.

After selling almost everything he owned, he had barely managed to keep that little rice. If he controlled himself and ate only once a day, it might last him about two weeks.

Yet Charlotte was asking him to give it away.

“So what if I only have a little rice?” Oscar asked, genuinely curious.

“You can still give us some.”

“You didn't even think about whether I have enough to eat?”

Charlotte became silent for a moment before saying, “Oscar, who are you living for? You don't have a family. I have a family to take care of.”

Oscar clenched his fist as he stared at the phone.

She continued, “You should just give it to us. What are you going to do with the rice anyway?”

Oscar's face slowly darkened.

“Fine,” Charlotte said. “If it's just 1kg bag you have that means you have up to 5 cups of rice. Just give the whole bag to the officers. I was expecting more though.”

Then she suddenly remembered something.

“And make sure it's clean rice. Three weeks ago, the officials were sending that stony rice to people. My mother doesn't want that. If you have clean rice now, give it to us.”

Oscar looked at the rice again. The rice in the basin would fill a 3kg bag, so it was approximately 15 cups. But it was clean because he spent days taking out the stones.

“And if I don't have clean rice?” he asked.

“Then take out the stones yourself before sending it over.”

Oscar laughed. He couldn't believe what he was hearing. “Why should I do as you say to please your mother and grandmother? The same mother who insulted me?”

Charlotte didn't answer.

“The same grandmother who told me I was worthless?” Oscar continued. “The same grandmother who said I couldn't even afford the things I bought for you? Even that bag I bought from the channel store with my last money, she said it wasn't my money I spent.”

Charlotte sighed. “Don't make a fuss.”

But Oscar was just getting started. “And the same Gideon? That average class who snores like a pig and smell like shit.”

“Oscar, I know you still like me. So do as I've said and leave Gideon out of this.”

The call ended.

Oscar stared at his phone for several seconds before suddenly laughing.

“Hahaha!”

He shook his head. “So this is what she called me for?”

He had actually thought Charlotte had finally changed.

He had imagined that she would apologize for what happened back then. He had even wondered if this was one of those situations where people who had once rejected you came back after missing you and your warmth.

But he had been wrong. Charlotte hadn't called because she regretted anything. She had called because she wanted his rice.

Oscar picked up his binoculars and looked toward Charlotte's house. Indeed, two officials had already left the building.

“So they're still in that old house.”

He adjusted the binoculars and watched for a moment.

The family was really trapped inside the house because of the lockdown. Oscar lowered the binoculars and shook his head.

“Of all the things I did, how could I have thought Charlotte would ask for forgiveness?”

He remembered that day at her parents' house. He remembered their mocking faces. He remembered how they had called him a liar after everything he had done for Charlotte.

He had spent years working odd jobs from the beginning of college until Charlotte graduated in 2052. He had helped her whenever he could, even when he barely had enough money for himself. And this was what he got in return.

“What an ingrate.”

Oscar folded his arms and thought for a moment before suddenly smiling.

“I should better prepare some rice.”

He was definitely going to give them something.

Oscar walked toward the small amount of rice and picked up a cup. “One cup.”

He looked toward the dirt and other things he had dug out from beneath his floor, then a mischievous expression appeared on his face.

As for the water...

Oscar barely had enough water for himself. He had to carefully plan how much he drank, how much he used to wash, and how much he could spare for anything else.

And Charlotte wanted ten liters.

“Ten liters?” Oscar shook his head.

He was about to put down the binoculars when something suddenly caught his attention. There was someone standing near the window of the neighboring house.

Oscar recognized the house. It belonged to Chantel.

Unlike Charlotte, Chantel had always been kind to him. Even during college, she had often warned him that he was doing too much for Charlotte.

“Oscar, you should take care of yourself too.”

But he had never listened. He had been too busy thinking about Charlotte.

Oscar adjusted the binoculars and looked at the figure again.

The person was standing near the bedroom window, and Oscar noticed that the hair was much longer than Chantel's usual bob.

“I never knew Chantal had a sister with a longer hair.” He moved the binoculars slightly and view became clearer. "I bet she's just as pretty as Chantel too."

His eyes widened with what he was seeing.

“Oh my God!”

He immediately pulled his face away from the binoculars. He suddenly realized that he was looking directly into Chantel's bedroom.

His cheeks turned beet red, and even his ears felt hot.

“What did I just see?”

Oscar slapped his cheek lightly and looked away.

“So rosy.”

He quickly shut up on his feet. What is this God privilege? Seeing things like this... woah.

In fact, he had barely felt anything at all. It was nothing more than a little tickle against his skin, which made sense considering how tiny the statue was compared to his smallest finger."That was supposed to be steel, right?" Why was the shape of the hole like that? "It looks like the shape of my thumb."His thumb suddenly came to mind. "Wait a minute."
