Chapter 8: Shadow in the Alley
The knock on the door below us turned into banging. Heavy boots climbed the stairs. Lira looked at me with wide eyes, waiting for my choice.
I did not hide under the bed. That felt like a trap. Instead, I moved to the window and pushed it open. Cool night air rushed in.
“Follow if you want,” I said quietly to Lira.
I climbed out and dropped into the dark alley behind the inn. My legs bent easy when I landed, thanks to the new agility. No noise. Shadow Step made sure of that.
Lira came right after me. She landed light on her feet like she had done this many times before. We pressed our backs against the wall as the inn door upstairs slammed open. Voices shouted. Furniture moved. They were tearing the room apart.
“Quick,” Lira whispered. “This way.”
She took my hand and pulled me down the narrow alley. We ran between old buildings, stepping over trash and puddles. My cloak flapped behind me. The relic in my pocket grew warm again, like it liked the danger.
We turned a corner and stopped behind a stack of empty barrels. Torchlight moved at the end of the alley. Two guards passed by, talking low.
“…mage says the boy has ruin power. Captain wants him alive.”
“The Duke will pay gold for anything from Nethralis.”
Lira waited until they were gone, then looked at me. “You really woke something big, didn’t you? Most scavengers come out with broken pots and old coins. You come out smelling like death and old magic.”
I kept my voice low. “I found a stone. That is all.”
She smiled like she did not believe me. “Sure. And I am just a simple gate watcher. Listen, the guards will lock down the whole district soon. I know a safe house in the lower quarter. My brother runs it. No questions, cheap food, and a back door if things get bad.”
I studied her face in the dim light. She looked honest enough, but trust was dangerous. Still, I had nowhere else to go. The city felt big and full of eyes. I needed time to understand the System and plan my next move.
“Lead on,” I said.
We moved again, staying in the shadows. Lira knew every turn. We slipped through small streets, under hanging clothes, and across quiet squares. Once, a patrol came close. I pulled Lira into a doorway and used Shadow Step to hide us both for a few seconds. The guards walked past without seeing us.
The lower quarter was poorer. The houses leaned close together. Smells of cooking and waste mixed in the air. People sat outside on steps, talking soft. No one looked at us twice.
Lira stopped at a plain wooden door with no sign. She knocked three times, paused, then twice more. The door opened a crack. A man with a short beard and tired eyes looked out.
“Sis? Who is this?”
“Trouble from the ruins,” Lira said. “He needs a room for the night. Pays in silver or favors.”
The man stared at me for a moment, then opened the door wider. “Come in. Fast.”
Inside was a small common room with a few tables and a warm fire. Only three other people sat there, eating soup and minding their own business. The brother led us up a narrow stair to a small room at the back.
“Bed, water, bread. Door locks from inside. If guards come, knock on the floor three times and we will hide you in the cellar.” He looked at me hard. “Stay out of sight. The Duke’s men have been restless since the ruin tremors started.”
He left and closed the door.
Lira sat on the edge of the table. “You can trust us. For now. But tell me one thing — what exactly did you find? The whole city feels different tonight. Like something old woke up and is watching us.”
I sat on the bed and pulled out the black relic. It looked plain again, but I knew better. The shard fragments were hidden inside my clothes. “This. It spoke to me. Showed me numbers. Gave me power.”
Lira’s eyes got big. She leaned closer but did not touch it. “A System stone? I heard rumors from travelers. Some call them curses from the old gods. Others say they make men into monsters or kings.”
Before I could say more, the System gave a new message.
Safe shelter secured.
Side quest complete.
Reward: Basic city map unlocked.
New information available: Valthor holds a secret auction in three days. Ancient items draw powerful buyers.
A simple map appeared in my mind — streets, districts, and a marked building in the noble quarter for the auction.
Lira stood up. “Rest. I will bring more food later. And if you need help selling that thing without getting caught…”
She left the sentence open and slipped out the door.
I locked it behind her and lay back on the bed. My body ached, but the power inside felt stronger than ever. I opened the System screen in my head and looked at the new numbers.
Host: Zephyr Kaelith
Level: 9
Strength: 27
Agility: 24
Vitality: 22
Skills: Shadow Step, Essence Drain, Primordial Strike, Scale Armor, Void Hunger
It felt good. But the warning from earlier stayed with me. The hunters would spread word. The captain was still out there. And now this auction in three days — it could be a place to learn more or a trap.
I closed my eyes for a moment.
A loud bang came from downstairs. Shouts followed.
“City guard! Open up! We are searching for a fugitive from the ruins!”
Boots stormed inside. Tables scraped. Someone cried out.
Lira’s voice came up the stairs, calm but tight. “We have nothing here, sir.”
The brother answered too, but the guards did not listen.
I stood up fast. My window looked out to another narrow alley. I could jump. Or I could wait and see if they came up.
The System flashed one line.
Hostiles approaching. Prepare.
Footsteps climbed the stairs. Heavy and many.
I moved to the window and pushed it open. The night air waited.
But as I climbed out, I heard the door below break open.
They were coming straight for my room.

Chapter 28: The Trial of Echoes Dawn broke cold and gray over the village. The sky was heavy with clouds that promised snow. I stood outside Elder Thorne's hut, watching the village wake. Lira joined me, her face pale but determined. "Today is the day," she said. I nodded. "The Trial of Echoes. Whatever that means." Elder Thorne emerged from his hut, dressed in ceremonial robes. Two other elders flanked him, carrying staffs topped with glowing crystals. The villagers gathered in the central square, their faces solemn. Even the children were quiet. Elder Thorne approached us. "The first trial begins now. The Trial of Echoes tests your mind — your ability to resist illusion, deception, and the voices of the past. Many have failed here, lost in their own memories." He handed me a small stone, similar to the ward he'd given us the night before, but larger and etched with more complex runes. "This will guide you. Follow the path it illuminates. Do not stray. Do not speak to anything

Chapter 27: The Village of EchoesThe night in the village was the first peaceful sleep we'd had in weeks. I woke to the smell of fresh bread and the sound of children laughing outside. Lira was already up, sitting by the window and watching the village come to life."They seem so… normal," she said when she noticed I was awake. "After everything we've been through, it's strange to see people just living their lives."I sat up and stretched. My body still ached from the Wraith fight, but the new Fear Resistance skill made me feel steadier.[Primordial System message: You have entered the domain of the Forgotten Mountains. The village is protected by ancient pacts. Violence here is forbidden.]I kept that to myself. No need to worry Lira.Elder Thorne knocked on the door and entered with his wife, carrying trays of food. Hot porridge, fresh eggs, and a strange blue fruit that tasted like honey and berries mixed together."Eat well," he said. "The trials begin at dawn tomorrow. You will

Chapter 26: The Whispering Pass The pass narrowed as we climbed. On both sides, steep cliffs rose like black teeth biting into the sky. The wind howled through the gaps, carrying whispers that sounded almost like voices. Lira shivered and pulled her cloak tighter around her. "Do you hear that?" she asked, her voice low. I nodded. The whispers were faint but constant. They seemed to come from the rocks themselves. [Primordial System message: The pass is protected by ancient wards. The whispers are echoes of past Anomalies who failed the trials ahead.] I kept the message to myself. No need to worry Lira more than she already was. The path twisted and turned. Sometimes it disappeared completely under loose scree, sometimes it became so narrow that we had to press our backs to the rock face and shuffle sideways. Every few steps, old runes glowed faintly on the cliffs, reacting to our presence. We stopped for a short rest on a flat ledge. Lira sat with her back against the rock, bre

Chapter 25: The Edge of the Wild The days blurred together as we pushed deeper into the Eldrath Forest. Each morning we woke early, ate whatever we could find or hunt, and kept moving toward the distant mountains the System pointed out in my mind. The trees grew taller and thicker, their branches forming a green roof that blocked most of the sunlight. The ground was soft with moss and fallen leaves, making our steps almost silent. Lira had grown stronger from the constant walking, but she still tired faster than I did. I carried her on my back for long stretches when her legs gave out. The new power from the Heart made my body feel tireless, but I was careful not to push too hard. The hunger was always there, whispering in the back of my mind, waiting for any excuse to break free. [Primordial System update: Distance to Forgotten Mountains reduced to 8 days. Essence density in the forest has increased. Stronger guardians expected.] The message appeared in its usual calm tone. Chapter 24: The Silent WatchThe fire had burned low by the time I woke Lira for her watch. The forest was quiet except for the soft rustle of leaves and the distant call of night birds. I lay down on the soft moss under the tree roots, but sleep did not come easily. The new power from the Heart still hummed in my veins, making every small sound sharper.[Primordial System update: Distance to Forgotten Mountains reduced to 10 days. Wild essence density increasing.]The message appeared clearly in my mind, calm and cold as always. I closed my eyes and tried to rest. Chapter 23: Whispers of the WildThe next morning came with a soft gray light filtering through the thick forest canopy. I woke up first, my body already feeling the pull to move. The new power from the Heart of the Primordial made everything sharper — sounds, smells, even the way the leaves moved in the breeze. Lira was still asleep, curled up against the cave wall with my cloak over her.I stepped outside the cave and looked around. The canyon we had crossed yesterday was far behind us now. The forest here felt older, wilder. Tall trees with thick trunks blocked most of the sky.
