Chapter 1: The Cursed Relic

Zephyr Kaelith coughed as dust filled his lungs. He wiped sweat from his face and kept digging through the broken stones. The old ruins of Nethralis always felt cold, even under the midday sun. Most scavengers stayed away from this deep part. They said the walls whispered at night and the ground swallowed men whole. Zephyr had no choice. Hunger did not care about old tales.

His hands bled from sharp rocks, but he kept going. A small shine caught his eye under a fallen pillar. He pushed harder and pulled out a black stone no bigger than his palm. It felt warm, almost alive. Strange marks covered its surface, like writing from a time before kings and empires.

"What is this?" he muttered.

He turned it over. The moment his thumb pressed the center, the stone pulsed with a deep red light. Pain shot through his head like fire. Zephyr dropped to his knees and gasped. The world spun around him.

A voice spoke inside his mind. It sounded old, heavy, and calm.

[Primordial System bound.]

Zephyr clutched his head. "Who is there? Get out!"

[Anomaly detected. You were never meant to exist.]

Words appeared in front of his eyes, floating like blue smoke.

Host: Zephyr Kaelith

Level: 1

Strength: 4

Agility: 5

Vitality: 3

A new line flashed brighter than the rest.

Primordial Devour activated. Absorb nearby essence to grow.

Zephyr stared at the floating words. His heart pounded hard. This could not be real. People in the big cities talked about blessings from gods or magic from noble bloodlines, but nothing like this. No one ever spoke of a voice that lived in your head and showed numbers for your body.

Before he could stand, heavy footsteps echoed from the tunnel behind him. Three rough men stepped into the dim light. They were scavengers too, but bigger and meaner. The leader, a bald man with a scar across his cheek, grinned when he saw the black stone in Zephyr's hand.

"Well, well. Look what the weak rat found," the bald man said. "Hand it over, boy. That shiny thing belongs to us now."

The other two laughed and pulled out rusty knives.

Zephyr backed up until his back hit the wall. His body felt strange, stronger somehow, but he was still alone against three. He gripped the stone tight. Heat spread from it into his arm.

The bald man stepped closer. "Last chance, rat."

Zephyr's mind raced. He had nothing left to lose. Without thinking, he swung his free hand at the nearest man. The punch landed harder than it should have. The man flew back and crashed into the stones with a sick crack.

The floating words changed.

You have slain a low-level scavenger.

Essence absorbed.

Strength +2

New skill unlocked: Primordial Strike.

The other two men froze for a second, then rushed him with angry shouts. Zephyr dodged the first knife and felt new power rush through his muscles. He struck again. This time his fist broke through the second man's chest like it was paper. Blood sprayed across the old stones.

The bald leader turned to run, eyes wide with fear.

Zephyr moved faster than before. He caught the man by the neck and lifted him off the ground with one hand. The bald man's legs kicked uselessly.

"Wait... please..." the man begged.

The voice spoke again, colder this time.

Devour him.

Zephyr hesitated. Then the hunger from the System hit him like a wave. He squeezed. The man's neck snapped. Warm energy flowed into Zephyr's body, richer and darker than the others.

Essence absorbed.

Vitality +3

Primordial System hungers for more.

Zephyr dropped the body and looked at his hands. They did not shake. The floating words stayed in front of him, waiting. He felt stronger, faster, but something inside him had changed. The stone in his palm grew hotter.

A loud rumble shook the ruins. Cracks spread across the ceiling. Ancient doors deep in the tunnels began to open with a grinding sound. Something big stirred in the darkness ahead.

The voice returned, almost pleased.

Warning. Stronger essence detected nearby. Prepare.

Zephyr took one step forward, then stopped. From the black opening ahead, two glowing red eyes appeared, much larger than any human. A low growl filled the air, the kind that promised pain and death.

His new power felt small against whatever waited in there.

What would he do now?
