"Shoot him, you cowards, shoot him down," Warden Thomas choked out, his voice hoarse and panicked as he thrashed against the stone ceiling, the solid tendril of shadow magic squeezing his throat tighter by the second.

The surviving guards in the corridor panicked, their fingers twitching on the triggers of their rifles. Three of them fired simultaneously, the deafening cracks of black powder echoing through the narrow hallway.

"I do not think so," Marcus Vance roared, stepping directly in front of Captain Briggs.

He thrust his hands outward, calling upon the dark energy swirling in his chest. His shadow shroud responded instantly, expanding into a thick, swirling wall of impenetrable black smoke that completely filled the doorway of Cell 44. The lead bullets slammed into the shadowy barrier, losing all momentum and dropping onto the stone floor with a flurry of dull metallic clinks.

The guards took a collective step backward, their faces pale with pure terror.

"Tell them to drop their weapons, Thomas," Marcus commanded, his voice echoing with a deep, unnatural resonance. "Or I will close this shadow fist and snap your neck right now. Choose quickly."

Thomas clawed frantically at the shadow wrapping his throat, his face turning a dangerous shade of purple. "Hold... hold your fire," he wheezed out to his men, his eyes bulging. "Retreat. Drop back to the main gates. That is an order."

Marcus flexed his wrist, throwing his hand forward. The shadow tendril released its grip, flinging the Warden violently across the corridor. Thomas crashed hard into the opposite wall, gasping for air as his guards scrambled to pick him up. They dragged their terrified leader down the hallway, their boots clicking frantically against the stone until the heavy iron security gates slammed shut behind them.

"By the gods, Marcus," Captain Briggs gasped, wiping a streak of sweat and gunpowder from his forehead as he leaned against his iron mace. "You really played the demon just now. They are terrified of you. The whole prison staff is going to come back with cannons for this."

"Let them come," Marcus said, his eyes flashing in the darkness as he walked out of his ruined cell. "We are not running, Briggs. We are taking this block. Get your keys. Open every single cell in Block 4 right now."

Briggs did not hesitate. The absolute greed and the desire to stay alive drove him forward. He ran down the long corridor, his heavy iron keys jangling loudly as he threw open door after door. "Get out, all of you. If you want a chance to survive, get out here right now."

Dozens of hardened inmates, murderers, thieves, and political prisoners stepped out into the dim torchlight, staring at Marcus and the black mist still swirling around his boots.

"Who is the sorcerer?" a massive, scarred prisoner named Silas asked, pointing a trembling, dirt-covered finger at Marcus. "Are you going to slaughter us too?"

"My name is Marcus Vance," Marcus announced, his voice carrying clearly down the long row of cells. "The Warden wants everyone in this block dead to cover up his crimes. If you stay in your cells, you will face an execution squad by morning. But if you stand with me, I will give you protection. I will give you weapons. And I will give you more wealth than you have ever seen in your miserable lives."

To prove his point, Marcus reached into his pockets and tossed a handful of small, glowing mana crystals onto the floor. The precious gems bounced across the stone, casting an ethereal blue light over the greedy, desperate faces of the inmates.

Silas dropped to his knees, snatching up a crystal and holding it to the light. "This is pure mana ore. This is a fortune. Where did a prisoner get this?"

"It does not matter where it comes from," Marcus said, stepping forward. "What matters is that I have an endless supply of it. Help me hold this block against the Warden’s military siege, and every single man who survives will walk out of here a wealthy man. Do we have a deal?"

The prisoners looked at the glowing stones, then at the shattered cell doors, and finally at Marcus’s terrifying shadow shroud.

"We are with you, Vance," Silas roared, raising his fist into the air. "Better to die fighting with a sorcerer than to rot in these cages like rats."

The rest of the inmates erupted into a loud, angry cheer, immediately moving to help Briggs drag heavy steel benches, iron bed frames, and broken doors to create a massive barricade against the main entrance of Cell Block 4. Marcus was no longer just a helpless prisoner waiting for death; he was now the leader of a heavily fortified prison rebellion, backed by the infinite resources of another world.

"The barricade is secure, Marcus," Briggs reported, running back down the hall with a spare rifle in his hands. "But we are completely locked in. We have no food, and the water valves can be shut off from the main courtyard. How long can we really hold out?"

"We have an entire world of food and water right behind my cell wall, Briggs," Marcus smiled darkly. "Do not worry about supplies."

Suddenly, a harsh, metallic scratch echoed through the stone corridor. The prison’s magical public broadcast crystal, mounted high on the central wall, flared with a bright purple light. The voice of Warden Thomas Vance crackled through the speaker, booming across every single block in Blackwood Penitentiary.

"Attention to all inmates and guards of this facility," Thomas’s voice announced, though it trembled with a clear undercurrent of anger and fear. "Do not listen to the lies of the traitor Marcus Vance. The crown did not strip his family of their titles out of greed. The Vance family was executed because they were performing forbidden dark rituals. They were preparing to open an unholy portal hidden inside this prison to unleash a horde of bloodthirsty alien monsters onto our Earth."

Marcus froze, his jaw tightening as he listened to the massive lie broadcasting to the entire facility.

"Marcus Vance has already embraced this demonic magic," Thomas’s voice continued, growing louder and more confident. "He is using the shadows of the underworld to hold Block 4 hostage. He wants to destroy this kingdom. Any prisoner who aids him will be branded an enemy of mankind, and the royal army will show absolute zero mercy when we breach the gates."

The speaker crystal clicked off, leaving a suffocating silence in the corridor. The inmates stopped working on the barricades, turning their heads slowly to look at Marcus with sudden doubt and suspicion in their eyes.

"Is that true, Vance?" Silas asked, his voice dropping low as he stepped away from the glowing crystals on the floor. "Are you trying to bring monsters into our world? We are criminals, but we are not suicidal."

"It is a lie, Silas," Marcus said, stepping toward the crowd with his hands raised. "My uncle murdered my father to steal our legacy. He is using your fear to turn you against me so his guards can clean up his mess. I am using this power to fight for my freedom, nothing more."

"He is telling the truth," Briggs spoke up, defending Marcus. "The Warden is the one who hired mercenaries to slaughter us last night. Do not fall for his tricks."

Before Silas could respond, a deep, terrifying rumble shook the solid foundations of the entire cell block. It was not the sound of cannons or dynamite from the outside walls. The violent vibration was coming from directly beneath the floorboards of Cell 44.

Marcus turned around, sprinting back into his ruined room.

The cold stone floor of his cell was splitting open from the bottom up. Massive, jagged cracks ripped through the concrete, glowing with a fierce, dangerous crimson light that smelled heavily of burning sulphur and ancient blood. Marcus watched in horror as a pair of massive, armored claws, covered in dark red scales, slammed through the stone from the world below, tearing at the ground as something colossal and angry from the depths of the Wilds began to force its way directly into the prison.
