Kyle woke up crying.
It wasn't loud. It was just these quiet, fractured sounds. He was curled up on what was left of our kitchen floor, Lilly’s hand wrapped tightly around his, his whole body shivering as if the cold had settled deep into his bones and refused to leave.
I stood over them, blood still crusting on my forearm, feeling absolutely nothing that resembled relief.
"Jay." His voice was wrecked, barely a whisper. "Jay, I saw…I saw things. In my head. It felt like it was going to wear me like a suit."
"You're okay now," I said. Even to my own ears, my voice sounded flat.
Lilly looked up at me, her eyes bloodshot, silently begging me to be gentler. But I didn't have any gentleness left in me tonight. I’d spent it all on a version of Kyle that didn't exist anymore: the guy from three years of takeout, bad movies, and making rent. Not the man who had stood in a dark alley an hour ago telling Lilly they couldn't keep doing this.
I helped him up anyway. I sat him at the remains of the table and brought him water he didn't even touch.
"You saved me," Kyle said, staring at his own hands as if they belonged to a stranger. "I don't…I don't even know how. What did you do?"
I could have told him the truth. I could have told him about a system only I could see, about a level-up screen, or how Truth Sight had laid his guilt bare in that alleyway.
Instead, I just said, "I don't really know either. Instinct, I guess."
It was the first real lie I'd told either of them since waking up in this second life, and it came out easier than I expected. It felt almost natural, like a skill I’d been practicing my whole life without ever realizing it.
"You could've left," Kyle said softly. "You could've run. Saved yourself, saved Lilly. Instead, you…" His voice cracked again. "You went after it. For me."
I let the silence hang between us for a moment, watching his face, watching the way guilt and gratitude tangled together behind his eyes. Truth Sight didn't need to tell me what that look meant. I already knew.
"I don't leave people behind," I said. "Even when maybe I should."
The words landed exactly how I intended. Kyle's face crumpled, and something inside him broke right there at the table. It wasn't from the conversation, or whatever that thing had shown him. It was the guilt. Real, heavy, human guilt, finally finding a way out.
"I have to tell you something," he said, his voice trembling. "I should've told you a long time ago."
Behind him, Lilly went rigid. Her hand tightened on his shoulder in a silent, desperate warning, but he either didn't notice or simply chose to ignore it.
"Kyle," she said, her voice sharp. "Not now."
"No." He shook his head, wiping his face with the back of his hand. A sense of resolve settled over him, the exact look of a man who had decided the guilt was no longer worth the weight. "He almost died for me tonight, Lilly. He deserves to know."
My pulse quickened, slow and steady. It was nothing like the panic I would have felt a week ago. I leaned back in my chair, crossed my arms, and let my expression settle into something patient. Concerned. Exactly the face the old Jayden would have worn.
"Know what?" I asked.
Kyle looked at me, a cocktail of guilt, fear, and something resembling relief fighting for space on his face. He opened his mouth to finally say the thing I had already seen him nearly admit once before, in the dark of that alley, three hours before any of this started.

I didn't move. I didn't even blink. I just watched him with the calm, open expression of a man who had no idea what was coming, and waited for him to finally hand me exactly what I needed.

CHAPTER 12: CONVENIENT
"You're doing it again."I looked up from my plate. Kyle was watching me over the top of his burger, looking amused, like I was some kind of novelty he'd just caught performing a trick."Doing what?""That thing where you disappear into your own head." He gestured vaguely toward my face with a fry. "Zoning out. You've been doing it for days now.""Sorry." I forced out a small, easy laugh, the kind that sounds apologetic but doesn't mean a thing. "It's just been a long week.""Every week is a long week for you," he said. He wasn't being mean, exactly, but he wasn't being kind either. It was more like he was noting a defect in a piece of property he owned. "You need a hobby, man. Something that isn't just work and constantly worrying about the rest of us." The rest of us. As if I were part of his staff. As if my entire role in his life had been whittled down to a chore he checked on occasionally, like making sure a smoke detector still had fresh batteries."Maybe," I said.He grinned, l
CHAPTER 11: BUSINESS AS USUAL
Lilly was still up when I walked through the door. She was hunched over the kitchen table, thumbing through her phone, not even bothering to look up as I entered."Where'd you go?" she asked. Her voice was flat, the kind of question asked out of habit rather than actual interest."Just driving." I set my keys on the counter. "Needed some air after last night.""Mm." She didn't stop scrolling. "Kyle’s losing his mind. He says he’s never seen anything like that thing before.""Are you okay?" I asked. She finally lifted her gaze, but there wasn't a trace of guilt in her eyes. Instead, she looked mildly irritated, as if my question was a nuisance interrupting something far more important."I'm fine, Jayden. It's over." She turned her attention back to her screen. "You don't need to hover."I stood there for a moment, just watching her, letting Truth Sight do what it always did without me even having to trigger it.[Truth Sight: Active.][Subject: Lilly Grant][Primary Emotion: Annoyance]
CHAPTER 10: THE FIRST MOVE
I didn't sleep a wink that night.By the time the sun began to creep over the horizon, Kyle was already gone. He’d retreated to his own apartment, muttering something about needing space to process everything. Lilly stayed curled up on her side of the bed, her back turned to me. She was pretending to be asleep, just as I was pretending not to notice.Lying there in the dark, I finally let my mind do the one thing it hadn't allowed itself to do since I woke up in this second life.Plan.I wouldn't just react anymore. I wouldn't spend my life just surviving one anomaly or one warning notification at a time. I was going to plan.[Status check.]I pulled up the screen that only I could see. I stared at the numbers that had seemed meaningless a week ago, but now felt like the only solid ground left beneath my feet.[Level: 6[Skills: Truth Sight, Restraint, Threat Sense][Gold reserves: $214,000][Properties: 1 (undisclosed)]The money wasn't system currency. CHAPTER 8: THE COST OF WAITING
"Lilly, don't!"She didn't listen. She took three more steps, bringing her within reach of that thing, while I was still slumped against the wall, my lungs burning and refusing to draw a decent breath.[Restraint: MAXIMUM THRESHOLD REACHED.][Reward multiplier: x4]The math didn't make sense, but I didn't care. Something deep inside me just snapped all the terror I'd been suppressing since that hallway, since that locked door, since this unasked-for system started tearing my life apart. Instead of crushing me, that feeling turned into fuel.I moved.I slammed into the thing wearing Kyle’s skin with everything I had, driving it away from Lilly and straight through the kitchen table. Wood splintered and exploded around us. We hit the floor hard, but this time, when I lunged for its throat, my grip didn't falter."You don't get her," I said. My voice sounded low and cold, like someone I didn't even recognize. "You don't get either of them."The red light burned against my palm, hot enoug
CHAPTER 7: WHAT'S LEFT OF HIM
It happened so fast.Too fast for Kyle. Too fast for the guy who used to lounge on my couch eating pizza and nodding off halfway through movies. I threw myself sideways over the kitchen counter, plates shattering beneath me, as I felt the rush of air from its claws, now where his fingers used to be, raking just an inch from my spine.[Threat Sense: Active.][Hostile approaching. Angle: rear-left.]I rolled off the counter just as it slammed into the cabinets behind me. Wood splintered everywhere, and red light spilled across the kitchen floor like blood."Kyle!" I yelled. I don't even know why I said it. Some stupid, stubborn part of me was still holding out hope that there was enough of him left to hear me. "Kyle, fight it!"The thing turned those glowing eyes toward me and laughed with his voice low, distorted, and completely wrong. "He's still in here," it said. "Screaming, actually. Want to hear?"Its jaw unhinged wider than any human mouth should, and the sound that followed wasn
