"Oof!" Bastian grunted as his boots slammed into the cracked, weed-choked asphalt of the street below. He stumbled forward, barely catching himself on the rusted, dented hood of an old sedan. "Okay, that was definitely more than a twelve-foot drop. I think my knees just took a detour through my chest."
"Your new skeletal matrix successfully absorbed ninety-eight percent of the kinetic impact," the System's voice echoed directly inside his head. "However, your brain is still translating the sudden deceleration as physical trauma. It is a psychological phantom."
"Yeah, well, tell my psychological phantom to shut up," Bastian wheezed, pushing himself upright and shaking out his legs. He was amazed to find that despite the hard landing, he wasn't broken. "How much time is left on that ridiculous clock?"
"Fourteen minutes and fifty-two seconds," the blue interface blinked in his upper-right field of vision, its numbers ticking down with merciless precision. "The target’s vitals are dropping rapidly. If you do not accelerate your pace, the probability of a successful rescue will fall below ten percent within five minutes."
"Alright, alright! I'm moving!" Bastian sprinted down the narrow alley, his boots kicking up clouds of grey dust. "Where is this signal coming from? Give me some directions instead of just counting down!"
"Take a sharp left in fifty meters," the System directed. "The source is located within the basement of the collapsed industrial workshop directly ahead."
"A workshop?" Bastian panted, his chest rising and falling easily despite the sprint. "What was anyone even doing in there? The world ended ten years ago!"
"Data indicates the target is a mechanical engineer named Ariana Kessan," the System replied. "She has been operating a localized salvage operation in this sector for several months."
"A salvage operation? Alone in a dead city?" Bastian shook his head, dodging a fallen telephone pole. "She's either incredibly brave or completely out of her mind."
"The two traits are not mutually exclusive in human psychology," the System noted. "You are currently three hundred meters from her location. Time remaining: twelve minutes, forty seconds."
"I see the building," Bastian said, his eyes locking onto a crumbling, two-story brick structure at the end of the block. The roof had completely caved in, spilling a massive mountain of rubble onto the street. "Tell me there's an easy way in. Please."
"Analyzing structural geometry," the System replied. A red wireframe map overlayed his vision, scanning the building. "The primary entrance is entirely blocked by three tons of unstable masonry. The only viable path to the basement is a narrow ventilation shaft on the east wall."
"Great. A ventilation shaft. Because why would anything be simple?" Bastian reached the perimeter of the collapsed workshop, coughing as a wave of dusty, stagnant air hit his face. "This place looks like a house of cards. One wrong nudge and the whole thing collapses on top of both of us."
"Correct," the System said. "The structural stability of the remaining frame is currently rated at eight percent. Please exercise extreme caution."
"Sure, I'll be careful while sprinting against a ticking clock," Bastian muttered, scrambling over a pile of shattered brick. He found the ventilation grate on the east wall, half-buried under a massive concrete slab. "Is she under this?"
"The target is directly beneath this slab, in the utility room below," the System confirmed. "The concrete block obstructing the shaft weighs approximately seven hundred and fifty pounds. Your current physical capacity is insufficient for a direct lift."
"Wait, I thought you just optimized me!" Bastian complained, grabbing the edge of the heavy slab and pulling anyway. He groaned as his muscles strained, but the stone barely budged. "What was all that 'Pioneer' stuff for if I can't even lift a rock?"
"Optimization improved your muscle density and repaired your previous injuries," the System explained calmly. "It did not grant you supernatural strength. You must utilize mechanical advantage."
"A lever," Bastian muttered, looking around the debris-strewn alley. "I need a lever. Why didn't I think of that?"
"A high-tensile steel pipe is located four meters behind you, protruding from the collapsed scaffolding," the System indicated with a glowing green marker.
"Perfect," Bastian said. He scrambled over to the scaffolding, grabbing the thick metal pipe. He planted his boots against the brick wall and pulled with all his might. "Come on... loosen up, you piece of junk!"
With a loud, agonizing scrape of tearing metal, the pipe broke free. Bastian stumbled backward, holding the five-foot steel bar.
"Nice," Bastian panted, wiping sweat from his forehead. "Now, where do I stick this thing?"
"Place the tip of the pipe under the primary cleft of the concrete slab," the System instructed, highlighting a small gap in red. "Use the smaller brick to your left as a fulcrum. According to my calculations, this will grant you a five-to-one mechanical advantage."
"Let's hope your math is right," Bastian said. He wedged the brick into place, shoved the end of the pipe under the heavy slab, and grabbed the far end of the bar. "Alright. Down we go."
He threw his entire weight onto the pipe. His muscles burned, a deep, hot ache blooming in his shoulders, but this time, the heavy concrete slab began to tilt upward.
"It's working!" Bastian grunted, his teeth grit. "How much farther?"
"Three more inches will clear the ventilation opening," the System said. "Maintain pressure."
"I'm maintaining! I'm maintaining!" Bastian roared, his face turning red as he pushed down with everything he had. "Just... move... you stupid stone!"
With a heavy, scraping groan, the slab slid backward, tumbling off the ventilation grate and crashing into the dirt with a thud that shook the ground.
"Phew," Bastian gasped, collapsing against the wall, chest heaving. "That... was way harder than it looked."
"You have nine minutes remaining," the System reminded him. "The target's vital signs are continuing to deteriorate."
"Right, no time to sit around," Bastian said. He kicked the rusted ventilation grate, knocking it loose into the dark void below. "Here goes nothing."
He slid through the narrow opening, dropping down into the pitch-black basement.
"Hello?" Bastian called out, his voice echoing off the damp concrete walls. "Is anyone down here? Can you hear me?"
For a second, there was only silence, save for the dripping of water somewhere in the dark. Then, a faint, raspy cough came from the far corner of the room.
"If you're a wild dog," a weak but remarkably sharp voice called out, "I should warn you... I taste like rust and bad decisions. You're better off eating the rats."
Bastian let out a breath he didn't realize he was holding. "Not a dog. Human. Well, mostly human." He blinked, his upgraded vision adjusting to the gloom. He could make out the shape of a collapsed ceiling, and beneath a massive, twisted steel workbench, a figure was pinned.
"Oh, thank god," the voice sighed, though the sarcasm returned almost immediately. "I was starting to think my final moments would be spent listening to the local pests plan their dinner party. I'm over here. Under the monument to bad structural engineering."
Bastian hurried over, navigating the piles of broken concrete. "Hold on, I'm coming. Are you Ariana?"
"That's my name. Don't wear it out," she said, squinting as Bastian approached. "And hey, can you turn down whatever glowing magic trick you've got going on in your eyes? I have a concussion, not a desire for a tan."
"Sorry," Bastian said, consciously trying to dim the glowing blue interface in his field of vision. "I'm Bastian. I'm here to get you out."
"Well, Bastian, you're late," Ariana said, coughing slightly. Grease stains covered her pale face, and her dark hair was matted with plaster dust. "I've been stuck under this metal monster for three hours. What took you so long? Stop to get coffee?"
"Actually, I was busy falling off an eighty-story building," Bastian said, kneeling beside her to inspect the damage. "Let's see what we're dealing with here."
"It's a heavy-duty steel workbench," Ariana explained, pointing a shaky finger at the massive frame pinning her lower body. "Weighs about eight hundred pounds. My left leg is trapped under the main support beam. I can't feel my toes, which is either a really good sign or a really bad one. Personally, I'm leaning toward bad."
"Your assessment is correct," the System chimed in Bastian's ear. "If the pressure is not relieved within six minutes, permanent nerve damage and tissue necrosis will begin."
"I can get this off you," Bastian told her, looking around the basement for materials. "Just hold still."
"Are you going to lift that by yourself?" Ariana asked, raising an eyebrow. "What are you, some kind of mutant? Because unless you have a crane in your pocket, we're going to need a miracle."
"No crane. Just some basic physics," Bastian said, spotting a thick steel bar on the floor nearby. "I need a pivot point. That heavy battery casing over there should work."
"You're going to lever it?" Ariana asked, her eyes tracking him as he dragged the heavy casing closer. "You think that pipe can handle the load? If it snaps, this whole workbench is going to pancake me."
"It won't snap," Bastian said, though he wasn't entirely sure himself. He wedged the steel bar under the workbench, aligning it with the battery casing. "And even if it does, I'm not planning on letting go."
"How comforting," Ariana muttered, though a faint smile touched her lips. "You have a terrible bedside manner, you know that?"
"So I've been told," Bastian said, bracing his feet against the floor. "Alright, Ariana. When I lift this, you need to pull yourself out. Can you do that?"
"If my leg still works, sure," she said, gritting her teeth. "If not, you might have to drag me like a sack of potatoes."
"Let's hope it doesn't come to that. On three. Ready?"
"As ready as I'll ever be. Just don't drop it."
"One," Bastian counted, gripping the steel bar. "Two..."
"Wait, are we doing 'three' and then lifting, or is 'three' the lift?" Ariana asked suddenly, panic creeping into her voice.
"Three is the lift!" Bastian yelled, throwing his entire weight onto the bar.
The steel pipe bent slightly under the immense strain, groaning loudly. Bastian's muscles screamed as the massive workbench slowly began to tilt upward, rising an inch, then two, then three.
"It's lifting!" Ariana gasped, her face pale with pain as she began to drag herself backward. "Hold it! Just a little more!"
"Hurry!" Bastian roared, his face turning bright red, his veins bulging against his skin. "I can't... hold this... forever!"
"I'm trying! My boot is caught on something!" Ariana cried out, kicking desperately with her free leg. "Okay, okay, I think I've got it!"
With one final, desperate heave, she slid her pinned leg out from beneath the steel frame. "I'm out! I'm out!"
"Dropping it!" Bastian gasped, releasing his grip on the lever.
The massive workbench slammed back down onto the concrete floor with a deafening crash, kicking up a thick cloud of dust. Bastian collapsed onto his hands and knees, panting heavily, his heart hammering against his ribs.
"See?" Bastian gasped, wiping the sweat from his eyes. "Told you... I had it."
"Yeah, well, you almost killed me in the process," Ariana said, holding her injured leg and wincing. "But I suppose a thank you is in order. So... thank you."
Before Bastian could respond, a sharp, loud crack echoed from the ceiling directly above them.
"What was that?" Ariana asked, her eyes widening in horror as she looked up.
"The ceiling is failing!" the System warned loudly. "Immediate evacuation required!"
A massive chunk of cracked concrete and plaster sheared off from the ceiling, plummeting straight toward Ariana's face.

Chapter 6: The Soldier's Signal
The static hissed loudly from the old fire station radio speaker, filling the garage with a harsh, rhythmic white noise."...any station receiving this transmission, respond immediately..." the voice repeated, fading under another wave of distortion before starting over."Is it just going to loop like that?" Bastian asked, leaning over the dusty metal console and squinting at the flickering green dials."Looks like an automated emergency beacon," Ariana said, her fingers flying across the glowing keyboard of the newly powered station computer. "It's transmitting on an old military frequency. High-band VHF. That's why our new antenna picked it up so clearly.""Bravo-Actual," Bastian murmured, shaking his head. "I remember that call sign from the early days of the collapse. It was a regional defense unit. Chapter 5: Sparks in the Dark
"Ninety seconds?" Ariana repeated, her voice cracking as she gripped the edge of the workbench. "Bastian, what does that mean? A runner? A pack?""The System says it's artificial," Bastian said, his eyes scanning the garage. "Do you have a weapon in this bag?""Front pocket," Ariana said, pointing a shaky finger. "My steel-limb crossbow. The bolts are loaded. Grab it!"Bastian unzipped the leather pouch and pulled out the compact, heavy-duty weapon. "Got it. How do I get to the roof?""The maintenance ladder is behind the main engine bay," Ariana said, coughing slightly. "Through that grey door. Hurry!""Stay here, keep your head down," Bastian ordered, rushing toward the door."Like I have a choice with this leg!" she called after him. "Just don't get yourself killed!""I'll try!" Bastian yelled back.He burst through the door, finding the rusty iron ladder. His upgraded muscles made the climb effortless, his hands flying up the rungs. Chapter 4: The Power of Collaboration
"God, it's thick down here!" Bastian coughed, shielding his face with his sleeve as he hit the bottom of the stairs. "The air is practically flammable!""Don't breathe it in too deep!" Ariana's voice drifted down the stairwell, echoing off the damp concrete. "And whatever you do, do not spark anything!""Easy for you to say!" Bastian called back, squinting through the pitch blackness. "I can't see my own hands down here! System, turn on a flashlight or something.""Night vision calibration active," the System’s voice chimed inside his head. His vision shifted instantly, washing the room in a pale, high-contrast green."Warning," the System added. "Liquid hydrocarbon concentration in the atmosphere is at critical levels. Ignition source detected three meters ahead.""I see it," Bastian muttered, his throat tightening. "And it's bad. Really bad.""What do you see?" Ariana yelled from the top of the stairs, her tone sharp with panic. "Bastian, talk to me! What’s happening down there?""T

A heavy chunk struck Bastian squarely in the upper back. He groaned, the breath knocked completely out of his lungs."Are you dead?" Ariana whispered, her face inches from his in the choking dust."Not yet," Bastian wheezed, pushing himself up with a grimace. "But my back is definitely going to hold a grudge.""Did you just use your body as a shield?" she asked, her eyes wide. "Are you completely insane?""You're welcome," he grunted, grabbing her arm. "Can you crawl?""I can try," she said, wincing as she shifted. "Ah! No, definitely can't. My leg is completely useless right now.""Warning," the System's voice chimed in Bastian's mind. "Structural integrity of the basement ceiling is now at zero percent. Total collapse imminent in forty-five seconds.""We need to go. No

Chapter 1: The Last Responder's System
"Almost done, old friend," Bastian said, his voice a dry rasp in the evening air. "Just look at that. Still pretty, even when there’s no one left to care."He leaned back against the crumbling concrete ledge, letting his legs dangle over the edge of the eighty-story drop. Below him, the ruins of Seattle stretched out like a vast, silent graveyard of steel and glass, swallowed by creeping green vines and layers of grey dust."Just a little longer," he whispered, closing his eyes against the warm, fading light. "Just let the sun go down, and then we can finally call it a day. No more running. No more searching."He rubbed his sore, aching knees, sighing deeply."Come on, Bastian, don't get sentimental now," he told himself, a faint, weary smile touching his lips. "You had a good run. Ten years after the world ended is a miracle anyway. You're allowed to be tired."The silence of the dead city was absolute, a heavy blanket that usually brought him peace. But today, the quiet felt heavier
