"Of course, I did! How could I have missed such a great day?!" Jeremy exclaimed, his lips still inches from hers, as they finally parted from their kiss.

Damien stared at them wide eyed, his brows furrowed in horror and disbelief as he witnessed the intimate moment. Was this the man his beloved wife had fallen for? The man who managed to steal away what he thought to be his happiness? A searing pain gripped his heart, his mouth curling in disgust.

Damien's eyes blazed with fury as he walked quickly towards the pair, his voice low and menacing.

"What is going on here?" He fumed.

Holly didn't flinch, her gaze still locked on Jeremy's face, her hands firmly placed on his chest. She ignored Damien's presence, paying him no regard whatsoever as she spoke, her voice dripping with sweetness.

"Jeremy, you're so amazing. I'm so glad you're here. Maybe now we can go on that trip you promised me." She smiled, her brows raised for confirmation from her new man.

Jeremy's smile grew wider as he wrapped his arms tightly around Holly’s waist, pulling her closer.

"I'm glad to be here, baby. I've missed you and of course. We’ll go to Greece once I round up everything at work for you. How does that sound?" He said, his husky voice irritated Damien as he watched them.

The woman he was once held so dearly, the woman who had looks at him like he was all that mattered; now in the hands of another man, Damien felt bitterness in the pit of his throat.

His anger boiled over, his face reddening.

"Holly, answer me!" he demanded, his voice rising, cutting her off from answering Jeremy.

Holly's eyes sparkled with defiance, but she refused to acknowledge her now ex-husband's presence, her focus solely on Jeremy.

“Holly!” Damien yelled and she finally turned to him, her expression icy and abrasive.

"Just leave, Damien. You're not needed here." She spat.

Damien's eyes widened, hurt and anger warring within him.

"Holly, what's going on?" He paused and cocked his head toward the man,

“And you, what the hell do you think you’re doing with my wife?” He asked, his tone firm as if forgetting that he had just taken a huge step earlier that day.

Holly sneered, her voice dripping with disgust .

"Ex wife, you mean. You were never a real husband to me. You're good for nothing, Damien. You never provided for me, never made me happy." She stated.

She glanced at Jeremy, her face softening. "But Jeremy does. He gives me everything I need, everything you never could and never would." She pointed out.

Damien's face squeezed into a frown, the words cutting deep as he felt like a thousand bullets were being fired into his chest.

"You're just going to leave me for him of all people? After everything we've been through?" He asked.

Holly shrugged, her shoulders barely rising. "Leaving you was the best decision I ever made, Damien. Your ranting right now only solidifies the fact."

Damien's face fell, still hurt by the words she spoke despite just getting divorced minutes ago. His voice trembled with more rage than sadness as he found his voice.

"How long, Holly? How long have you been lying to me, betraying me?" He asked. It was obvious the whole affair didn’t just start. She wouldn’t have been able to move on so quickly if it had.

Holly's smile twisted, her eyes glinting with pride.

"Long enough, say one year" she said, her voice dripping with satisfaction.

Jeremy's arms tightened around Holly, pulling her closer, as if claiming his property. Damien knew that he would have been able to take Jeremy on in the blink of an eye but for some reason he decided against it.

Damien’s eyes locked onto Holly’s, his gaze burning with accusation.

"So you've been sneaking around behind my back, all this while? Right under my nose, welcoming me home after work everyday, giving tender kisses at the same time seeing another man?" He asked, his voice dripping with anger. He had never imagined that Holly was capable of such a thing. Well, he didn’t need to imagine it anymore. The woman he had loved was gone and a greedy and selfish bitch had replaced her.

Holly scoffed as she shrugged her shoulders with a stern look on her face, dismissive.

"You were too blind to see, Damien. Too caught up in your own world." She replied.

"We were married, Holly. I trusted you and you betrayed me like this. Did my love mean nothing to you?" He asked, wanting to hear it in her own words.

Holly's laughter cut through the air, cold and condescending.

"Love? You call drowning me in poverty love? Come on, Damien. Jeremy shows me what love truly is." She finished, giving Jeremy another passionate kiss.

After the kiss, Holly’s stony eyes rested on Damien again. She was surprised that he was still standing there despite all she had said.

"Just leave, Damien. We're done. We're no longer married, and you have no right to question me. I owe you no explanation." She said, her tone neutral.

Damien's eyes widened, incredulous.

"You're really doing this, aren't you? Throwing away everything we had?" He asked.

“You seem to have forgotten that we just signed some very important papers, divorce papers.” Holly reminded.

Just as Damien opened his mouth to speak again, Jeremy stepped forward, his voice dripping with condescension.

"Enough, Damien. You're no longer important here, to her or to anyone else. A man of your... low status and limited funds can't possibly understand what Holly needs." He pointed out.

Jeremy's gaze swept over Damien, from his head to his toes, disdainfully.

"You're just a past memory in her life now. A reminder of the struggles and hardships she had to go through being married to you. I'm the one who can give her the world she deserves." He continued.

"Get out," Jeremy ordered, his voice firm. "You're not needed here. Holly deserves better than someone like you." He mocked.

Holly nodded in agreement, her eyes narrowed at him.

"Yes, Damien. Leave. We're done." She said.

Damien's face darkened as he felt the weight of the humiliation on his shoulders. He could see people start to stare and point fingers at him. With his voice low and menacing, he spoke.

"You will regret this. I promise." he vowed, his eyes burning with hatred. "Both of you." He said.

Jeremy smirked, completely unfazed.

"I doubt it," he sneered.

Holly rolled her eyes.

"Just leave, Damien. You’re embarrassing yourself." She said,

Damien's gaze lingered on them for a brief moment before he turned and walked away, blending into the crowded street but that didn’t stop him from hearing the way that they mocked and disgraced him to anyone who would listen.

Damien's ears burned as their derogatory giggles echoed through the air, adding to his rage. He clenched his fists, his mind racing with thoughts of revenge, he couldn’t wait to show them.

"Fools," he muttered under his breath. "They have no idea who I truly am.” He said to himself as he continued to walk to his car.

A sly smile spread across his face as he got into his car on the opposite side of the street.  They thought they'd won, but they had no idea of the power Damien wielded in the shadows or what his true identity was.

"I'll make them regret underestimating me," Damien vowed, his voice barely audible as he turned on his car and drove away, already knowing his next destination.

  • Chapter 2: Surprises

Hours had gone by after Holly had ripped Damien’s heart out of his chest and by that time, he was crest-fallen. It was 7:11 am in the morning, a handful of hours after the confrontation, when Damien chose to check his phone only to come across a message that was left by his assistant hours earlier. He hadn't been able to fall asleep and chose to just sit on his side of the bed and stare at the wall. He wanted to ignore it but when his phone rang again, he gripped it loosely and answered the call. “Good morning, Lord Damien. Happy one year anniversary to you and your wife Holly. I hope that I haven’t caught you at a bad time, but I was hoping that I could stop by your home later to drop off all the gifts that the generals and royals procured for your coming out to your wife. I have recorded about thirty gifts so far and would be willing to keep the rest for when you and your wife arrive at the villa for the celebration. The empire’s greatest would like to celebrate you.
