009: Humiliated!

"I’ll find Chris a job tomorrow, Mom," Ava said, her voice polite but firm. With her father away on a business trip in Dubai, she knew there was no dodging Karen’s commands.

Karen didn’t say another word. She just tossed her scarf over her shoulder and strode off like a queen dismissed from court, leaving behind a weird tension in the air.

Chris and Ava stood there, exchanging glances like two people silently plotting an escape plan.

As soon as Karen disappeared from sight, Ava turned to him. “You better be ready, Chris. I’ll do my best to get you something decent at Asstas Group.”

Chris nodded so hard he almost gave himself a neck sprain. “Of course, Ava! I’ll wake up early. I’ll shower, dress properly, carry my files....”

“Alright, save the TED Talk for tomorrow. Goodnight,” Ava cut him off and spun around like a boss, walking away.

Chris stood there, still grinning like a kid who just got a birthday cake... until her figure vanished down the hallway.

Then, his smile faded.

The memory of Zack’s insults at Falcon Eatery came flooding back, and his jaw tensed. His fists clenched by his sides as veins snaked up his arms like fire lines ready to explode.

“I’ll keep living this pathetic adopted son life,” he muttered under his breath, eyes burning, “even though I’m the damn Dragon Lord. Let them all think I’m weak. That way, they’ll never see the bite coming.”

He inhaled sharply, rage simmering beneath his calm exterior. “All the companies you people stole from me… I’m taking everything back. And I’ll make you regret ever underestimating me.”

With those words, he stormed into his room. That night, before falling asleep, Chris performed the dragon ritual—his body still burning with quiet vengeance.

The Next Morning

The sun wasn’t even fully out, but Chris was already dressed in a crisp shirt and black pants. He adjusted his cuffs, looked at himself in the mirror, and whispered, “Let’s go reclaim destiny.”

He left the house early, determined not to let Ava down. The Asstas Group was an hour away by bus, but he didn’t mind.

By the time he reached the company gates, he spotted an old man—around seventy-five standing unsteadily near the front stairs. The man was clutching his chest, gasping for air, face twisted in pain. People walked past like he was invisible.

Chris didn’t hesitate. He dropped his file on the ground and ran to him. “Sir! Are you okay?”

The old man swayed, barely keeping upright. As Chris steadied him, something strange happene. The old man’s eyes shimmered a faint blue.

“Chronic heart cancer. Only 52 seconds left.”

Chris’s brain registered the diagnosis instantly. His breath caught.

The man’s body began to slump. “Help me… I think I’m dying,” he croaked, his grip tightening on Chris’s shirt.

Chris’s instincts kicked in. He crossed his fingers and pressed them firmly against the man’s chest.

In a low whisper, he recited: “By the seven chronicles of the Dragon Group… awaken.”

A faint, glowing dragon head appeared momentarily on the man’s chest and in a flash, the old man straightened up, breathing smoothly like nothing had happened.

“What the hell did you just do to my grandfather?” a voice demanded from behind.

Chris turned.

A woman stood there, her eyes wide and fierce, her beauty even sharper than her tone. She looked like trouble wearing designer heels.

“Hey! I’m talking to you!” she barked, storming toward him as he turned to leave.

She grabbed his wrist and yanked him back. “You think you can just walk away without explaining what kind of stunt you pulled?”

Before Chris could reply, the old man stepped forward, his voice calm and joyful.

“Rihanna, sweetheart, stop. I feel... whole. The pain is gone. This young man healed me. I don’t know how, but he saved me.”

Rihanna looked at her grandfather in disbelief, then turned back only to find Chris gone.

He’d already vanished into the building, racing toward the interview hall.

****

Inside, Gavin Wall—the recruiter, was already barking.

“You said he was capable for the job, didn’t you? Then why on earth is he late?!”

“Please, sir. Give him a little more time,” Ava pleaded, standing like a shield. “I’m sure he’ll be here any minute now.”

Right on cue, the glass door slid open. Chris walked in, looking calm and sharp as ever.

“I’m here. No need to panic,” he said coolly.

Ava sighed in relief.

But Gavin’s nose flared. “We do need to panic, Mr. Loner!” he snapped, standing from his seat like a man ready to throw hands. “Time is precious. This isn’t your neighborhood bakery where you stroll in when it suits you!”

“With all due respect, sir,” Chris replied, stepping forward, “I am not late.”

Gavin raised his brows. “You what?”

“I said, I’m not late for the interview.”

The room tensed. Gavin slowly sat back, hands folded across his chest.

“We’ve been waiting here for thirty solid minutes, and you have the guts to say you’re not late?”

Chris leaned forward, just enough to show confidence but not arrogance.

"You’ve been waiting for thirty minutes don’t mean I am late!" Chris fired back, his tone thick with sarcasm. "Check your precious time, Mr. Gavin, and you’ll see that it’s 8:05 A.M. sharp! The interview starts at 8:20, so tell me. Am I late, or are you just in the mood to pick a fight?"

His smug expression twisted Gavin’s face with irritation.

Gavin’s lips parted, ready to unleash a verbal assault, but Chris didn’t give him the chance. He dragged a stool from the corner, its metal legs scraping the tiled floor with a shriek that turned a few heads.

He planted himself beside Gavin, crossed his legs, and leaned back as if he owned the place.

"Let’s not waste more time, shall we?" Chris said coolly. "There are other candidates waiting. We don’t need your mood swings slowing us down."

Gavin's jaw twitched. He wanted to throw something, anything, but his assistant recruiter leaned in, whispering something that made him rethink. Reluctantly, Gavin picked up Chris's file and flipped through it like it was a dirty rag.

"Huh… An ex-convict." Gavin didn’t hide the disgust in his voice. He gave Chris a side glance, lips curling into a mocking smirk.

Chris’s gaze snapped up like a loaded gun. His eyes locked on Gavin’s, cold and sharp.

Noticing the tension, Gavin turned up the sarcasm. “Oh, I touched a nerve? You’re upset I mentioned your little trip to jail? Please. A guy as shady as you shouldn’t even be near this building, let alone applying for a job.”

"Mr. Gavin, he might be an ex-convict, but he’s a changed man," Ava stepped in quickly, voice steady but pleading. "He’s hardworking, and I know him better than anyone. Give him a chance. Let him prove himself—"

“There’s no PROVING needed here, Miss Nile.” Gavin cut her off with a dismissive wave. “He was arrested for theft. And excuse me, we’re not looking to lose computers, chairs, or our vending machine snacks.”

Chris rose from the stool slowly, walked toward Gavin with calm steps, then looked him dead in the eye. “So, the only thing you noticed on that file was ‘ex-convict,’ huh? Not the part where I worked for Dragon Group? I’m good, Mr. Gavin. And I’ll take whatever job you throw at me. I’m not here to beg—I’m here to work.”

Gavin barked out a sarcastic laugh. “Even if you worked for the Heavens, I’d never hire you. Once a criminal, always a criminal. You’re trash and a danger to this company.”

Chris got up immediately and gave Gavin a dirty slap on his face.

The sound echoed across the room like a gunshot.

Before Gavin could react, Chris grabbed him by the collar, dragging him close. “I don’t let disrespect slide,” Chris growled through clenched teeth. “Especially not from pricks like you.”

“You dare lay hands on me?” Gavin stuttered, face turning red. “Just wait until I fire Ava!”

Ava gasped. “Chris, let him go,” she begged, walking over. “Please. You’re only making this worse for yourself.”

“I promise you, Ava,” Gavin seethed, “you’ll lose your job for this. That’s the price for letting an ex-con attack a supervisor.”

Ava dropped to her knees without a second thought. “Chris, please. Let him go. For me…”

Chris looked at her eyes wide, then soft. He slowly released Gavin and helped Ava up, gently pulling her to her feet like she was made of glass.

She turned to Gavin. “Please. Spare my job. Just this once.”

Gavin sneered and leaned close, voice dripping with venom.

“I’ll consider sparing your job… if you get your ass on my dick tonight. Let’s see just how sweet you are.”

Immediately after his words, another slap landed on his face!

Gavin was still holding the cheek where he was slapped when another slap landed on his face.

“You disgusting piece of trash! You think you can buy her body with a job?! You’re out of your damn mind!” Chris yelled, his eyes burning down.

Gavin stumbled back, holding his cheek. “You’ll regret this! I’ll call my boss! You won’t leave this building standing!”

He whipped out his phone and dialed furiously. “Sir, come to the hall right now! Someone assaulted me!”

Ava turned to Chris, voice low. “Please, maybe you should apologize before things go too far...”

Chris shook his head. “I won’t apologize to a dog.”

Gavin hung up and pointed at Chris. “Just wait. When my boss gets here, you’ll be out on your back or in cuffs!”

Moments later, the door swung open with a sharp clack.

A tall, well-dressed man strode into the room, eyes scanning with fury. “Who the hell is causing this disturbance in my company?”

“That’s him!” Gavin cried, practically running to the man. “He slapped me! Three times! I want him arrested! Look at my face!”

The boss turned his eyes to Chris.

Chris turned around slowly, shoulders squared.

The moment their eyes met, the boss froze.

He blinked twice, as if unsure he was seeing right.

“You…” the boss whispered, his voice suddenly shaken. “You’re the young man who saved my life… the one who helped me beat the heart cancer…!”

Thank heavens I disguised my real features. We must get out of here before our faces are plastered all over social media. The little reputation we have left is at stake!”Bianca yanked her arm back in defiance. “I’m not going anywhere! Let them record! Let them see what Chris did—”Bridget’s patience snapped. Her grip tightened, and her voice lowered to a dangerous pitch. “Stop acting like a child! Do you want to become a meme by sunset? Look around you—every single person in that room had their phone out.”She scanned the surroundings again, paranoia creeping into her expression. “And Mr. Lockwood isn’t just anybody. He’s respected. Influential.

He knew Ava had only agreed to her mother’s request—for him. And throughout their drive to the company, Ava remained quiet, her mood heavy and written all over her face.Chris could see it clearly. He held her hand on the gear shift, even as he drove. “Are you still upset about what happened, Ava?”Ava sniffled and tried to look away. “I’m okay, Chris. You don’t have to worry about anything…”“Are you sure, Ava?” Chris interjected quickly. “Because I can see it in your eyes. You’re mad at yourself just for saying yes to Mother’s demand. You didn’t want to help Bianca get that job, and it’s not like you didn’t have options. You only did it to keep her from throwing me out of the house, didn’t you?”Ava shook her head, hiding her emotions. “It’s okay, Chris. I’ve already accepted what she asked me to do. I only a

Finally, Ava took the documents from her mother and looked down at the bold heading. Her brow lifted."Application for Job in Asstas Group of Companies. His jaw clenched, and his eyes glowed red with suppressed fury.“Why did you—”“Are you gonna hit me, huh?” Bianca interrupted him, stepping forward boldly like she was daring him to try it. “You poured that cold juice on me.
