Alejandro Vargas didn’t walk toward the back of the Mercado de San Juan; he shuffled. Every step felt like he was dragging a ball and chain made of pure social anxiety. The market was a chaotic symphony of shouting vendors, the sizzle of fat on griddles, and the rhythmic thwack-thwack of cleavers hitting wooden blocks. Under normal circumstances, Alejo loved the anonymity of the crowd. Today, however, he was a man on a mission—a mission he was 100% certain would end with him being stuffed into a trash can.

"There they are," Alejo whispered, ducking behind a stack of empty wooden crates.

Near a loading dock sat three men who looked like they’d been cast as 'Thug #1, #2, and #3' in a low-budget telenovela. The leader, a man everyone called 'El Martillo'—The Hammer—was currently picking his teeth with a switchblade while counting a stack of crumpled pesos. Alejo’s pesos. The grocery money that was supposed to buy Tía’s specialty mole ingredients.

"Okay, Alejo. Just go over there. Be a man. Be a... a shark," he muttered, trying to channel the confidence his mother always screamed about. "Ask for the money back. Maybe they’ll appreciate the honesty? Maybe they’ll realize that stealing from a guy who wears mismatched socks is a low blow?"

He took a deep breath and stepped out. Before he could even open his mouth to offer a polite, trembling request for his money back, his vision suddenly flickered.

[SYSTEM CALIBRATION COMPLETE.]

[HOST DETECTED IN HOSTILE ENVIRONMENT. AGGRESSION LEVEL: 'GETTING PUNCHED IN THE FACE' PROBABILITY 98%.]

[SISTEMA BAILE O MUERE: ACTIVATED!]

Alejo froze. A neon-blue screen, pulsing with the intensity of a nightclub strobe light, hovered inches from his nose. "What the hell?" he yelped, swatting at the air.

"Hey! It’s the kid!" El Martillo barked, his eyes narrowing as he spotted Alejo. He stood up, the switchblade clicking shut as he tucked it away, replaced by a much more intimidating clenched fist. "You come back for more, flaco? I thought we told you the 'protection tax' was non-refundable."

"I... I just... look, there’s a blue square in my eye," Alejo stammered, pointing at nothing.

[MISSION: RECOVER THE PESOS.] [OBJECTIVE: DEFEAT THE HAMMER AND HIS CREW.] [COMPULSORY STYLE: SALSA (LEVEL 1 – STREET BASIC).]

[WARNING: DANCE OR DIE. FAILURE TO MAINTAIN THE BEAT WILL RESULT IN A -50% DEFENSE DEBUFF AND EXTREME NAUSEA.]

"Dance?" Alejo hissed under his breath. "I don’t dance! I barely walk in a straight line!"

"Who are you talking to, kid? You losing your mind?" El Martillo’s two lackeys began to circle Alejo. One of them, a guy with a neck thicker than Alejo’s waist, cracked his knuckles.

Suddenly, a sound began to ring in Alejo’s ears. It wasn't the market noise. It was a high-tempo brass section. A trumpet blared a sharp, staccato melody, followed by the driving, infectious beat of a cowbell. Clank-clank-clank-clank.

[BPM DETECTED: 180. SYNCING...]

"What is happening to my legs?" Alejo gasped.

His right foot snapped back. His left foot followed. His hips, usually as stiff as a frozen board, began to swivel with a fluid, terrifying grace.

"Is he... is he doing a basic step?" the thick-necked thug asked, pausing in confusion.

"I’m sorry! I can’t stop!" Alejo cried out, his body moving with a mind of its own. He was doing a perfect Salsa on-one, his arms held in a professional frame even as his face was twisted in a mask of pure horror.

"You’re mocking us?" El Martillo roared, his face turning a shade of chili-pepper red. "Get him!"

The thick-necked thug lunged forward with a wild haymaker. In Alejo’s vision, a glowing golden footprint appeared on the dirty concrete.

[DODGE TRIGGER: CROSS-BODY LEAD!]

Without Alejo’s permission, his body pivoted. He caught the thug’s extended arm, not with a block, but with a gentle, rhythmic guide. Using the momentum of the Salsa turn, Alejo spun the three-hundred-pound man around as if he were a dance partner. The thug, completely off-balance, went flying past Alejo and crashed head-first into a pile of overripe papayas.

[PERFECT SYNC! EVASION +40%. SPEED +20%.]

"Did you see that?" Alejo whispered, his eyes wide. "I just... I just Salsa-ed him into the fruit!"

"You’re dead, kid!" the second thug screamed, pulling a heavy lead pipe from his waistband. He swung it in a wide arc.

[COMBO INITIATED: THE SHINING STEP.]

Alejo’s feet became a blur. He performed a series of rapid-fire footwork—shines—that moved him inches away from the pipe’s trajectory. To the onlookers, it looked like he was vibrating with rhythmic energy. To Alejo, it felt like his hamstrings were being piloted by a ghost from a 1950s Havana ballroom.

As the thug overextended, Alejo’s foot snapped out in a sharp, rhythmic kick that landed squarely on the man’s shin—perfectly on the fourth beat of the measure.

"Ow! My leg! Why does it hurt so much? He’s just dancing!" the thug wailed, collapsing to his knees.

[STRIKE POWER MULTIPLIER: 2.0x (ON-BEAT BONUS).]

El Martillo was the only one left. He looked at his two fallen men, then back at Alejo, who was currently doing a series of rhythmic shoulder shimmies while retreating toward a stack of crates.

"I don't know what kind of voodoo this is," El Martillo growled, reaching into his pocket and pulling out a heavy brass knuckle. "But nobody dances in my market without paying the price."

He charged. He was faster and more experienced than the others. But the music in Alejo’s head was reaching a crescendo. The brass section was screaming, and the percussion was a frantic, driving force that demanded movement.

[ULTIMATE MOVE READY: EL TORBELLINO (THE WHIRLWIND).] [REQUIREMENT: 100% SYNC. PRESS 'START' IN YOUR MIND.]

Start! Start! Anything to make this stop! Alejo screamed internally.

Alejo’s body didn't just move; it ignited. He grabbed El Martillo’s outstretched arm and executed a triple-spin that defied the laws of physics. Each rotation added momentum, his coat flapping like a cape. On the final turn, he released the force into a palm strike that caught El Martillo right in the chest.

The "Hammer" flew backward, skidding ten feet across the dusty floor before hitting a wall. The stack of pesos flew out of his hand, fluttering through the air like confetti.

[VICTORY! S-RANK PERFORMANCE.] [REWARDS: 500 XP, 200 PESOS (RECOVERED), AND 'THE ATTENTION OF A PRO.']

The music stopped instantly. Alejo’s body went limp, his muscles screaming in protest. He stood there, panting, surrounded by groaning thugs and smashed papayas, his face burning with the heat of a thousand suns. He had never been more embarrassed in his entire life.

"That," a sharp, feminine voice echoed from the shadows of the loading dock, "was the most pathetic excuse for a Salsa I have ever seen."

Alejo spun around, nearly tripping over his own feet now that the System wasn't holding him upright.

Standing by the brick wall was a woman who looked like she’d stepped off a professional stage. She had long, dark hair pulled into a tight, practical ponytail, sharp features, and eyes that seemed to be judging Alejo’s very soul. She wore athletic gear that looked expensive and held a bottle of water like it was a weapon.

"Your timing was decent, but your posture?" She stepped forward, her heels clicking on the stone. "You look like a wet noodle trying to escape a pot of boiling water. And your frame? Disgusting. You’d break your partner's arm in a real club."

"I... I wasn't... I don't..." Alejo stuttered, his face turning an even deeper shade of red. "Who are you?"

"Lucía Fernández," she said, crossing her arms. She looked at the fallen thugs with a bored expression, then back at Alejo. "And apparently, I’m the one who has to make sure you don't kill yourself with those clumsy feet. Because if you’re going to fight using the sacred art of the dance, you’re not going to do it looking like an idiot."

[NEW CHARACTER DETECTED: LUCÍA FERNÁNDEZ (RANK: ELITE INSTRUCTOR).] [NEW MISSION: SURVIVE THE FIRST LESSON. REWARD: NOT DYING.]

Alejo looked at the neon-blue screen, then at the terrifyingly beautiful woman walking toward him. "Can I just go back to being a potato?" he whispered to the sky.

The System did not answer. It just started playing a slow, menacing Tango beat.

I think he’s just napping," Alejo whispered to the crowd, his voice cracking like a dry reed. "Very suddenly. In the middle of some cans. It’s a very efficient way to rest."The two thugs who remained standing didn't look like they wanted to test the efficiency of Alejo’s 'napping' technique.
