[WARNING: AGGRESSIVE INTENT DETECTED.]

[INITIATING COMBAT PROTOCOL: BAILE O MUERE v1.0]

[CURRENT TRACK: “LA REBELIÓN” – JOE ARROYO (REMIX)]

[OBJECTIVE: SURVIVE THE BEATDOWN WITHOUT LOSING THE BEAT.]

Alejo stared at the neon-blue text floating in the air, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. "No, no, no," he whispered, backing away until his heels hit a stack of rotting pineapple crates. "System, listen to me. I don’t dance. I don’t even stand in the middle of a room if I can help it. I am a corner-dweller. I am a wallflower. I am the guy who fades into the wallpaper at weddings!"

"Who are you talking to, skinny?" El Martillo growled, tossing his switchblade from one hand to the other. The blade caught the afternoon sun, sending a murderous glint into Alejo’s eyes. "You come here, you interrupt my lunch, and now you’re whispering to the air? You’ve either got balls of steel or a brain made of masa."

Thug #2, a man with a neck thicker than Alejo’s waist, let out a wet chuckle. "Maybe he’s praying, boss. Praying we don’t break his legs too badly."

[DANGER! ENEMY ATTACK IMMINENT.]

[SKILL UNLOCKED: BASIC SALSA STEP (TIER 1)]

[EFFECT: +50% EVASION, +30% AGILITY.]

[MANDATORY REQUIREMENT: MAINTAIN THE 1-2-3, 5-6-7 COUNT. STOPPING WILL RESULT IN AN IMMEDIATE ‘STIFFNESS’ DEBUFF (90% MOVEMENT REDUCTION).]

"Stiffness debuff?" Alejo’s eyes widened. "You’re going to turn me into a literal statue in the middle of a knife fight?!"

"That’s it," El Martillo spat. He lunged forward, the switchblade whistling through the humid air in a horizontal arc aimed straight for Alejo’s midsection.

In that split second, Alejo’s body ceased to belong to him.

His right foot snapped back, his left knee bent, and his hips—hips that had previously only known the rigid geometry of a computer chair—swiveled with the fluid grace of a professional ballroom dancer. He didn't just dodge; he flowed. The blade missed his stomach by a fraction of an inch, slicing through nothing but the scent of cilantro and desperation.

"One, two, three..." Alejo gasped, his feet moving in a rhythmic blur. "Five, six, seven..."

"What the hell was that?" El Martillo stumbled, his momentum carrying him past Alejo. He turned around, his face reddening. "You mocking me? You doing a little jig while I’m trying to gut you?"

"I'm so sorry!" Alejo cried, even as his arms rose into a classic salsa frame, his fingers snapping instinctively to the brassy trumpet solo playing only in his head. "I can't stop! If I stop, my legs will turn into lead! Please, just give me the money and I’ll dance my way out of here!"

"Get him!" El Martillo roared.

Thug #2 and Thug #3 charged simultaneously. Thug #2 swung a heavy lead pipe downward, a strike meant to shatter Alejo’s skull.

[SYNC RATE: 45%]

[COMBO MULTIPLIER: x1.5]

Alejo felt a surge of heat in his calves. As the pipe descended, he executed a perfect Enchufla. He stepped under the thug’s arm, spinning his entire body with dizzying speed. The pipe slammed into the wooden crates, exploding them into a cloud of splinters and fermented fruit juice.

Before Thug #2 could recover, Alejo’s hips swung back, and his trailing leg snapped out in a sharp, rhythmic kick—not a karate kick, but a stylized Cross Body Lead finish that planted his heel firmly into the thug’s kneecap.

CRACK.

"AAAAAGH!" Thug #2 collapsed, clutching his leg.

"Oh my god, I’m so sorry! Did that hurt?" Alejo squeaked, his feet still performing a frantic, high-speed shuffle. He was sweating now, his face bright red, his social anxiety screaming at him to stop making a scene, but the System was a cruel conductor.

[SYNC RATE: 65%]

[STYLE SHIFT SUGGESTION: TANGO FOR PRECISION COUNTER.]

[WARNING: TANGO REQUIRES AN INTENSE SMOLDER. FAILURE TO SMOLDER WILL REDUCE DAMAGE BY 40%.]

"I can't smolder!" Alejo yelled at the floating screen. "I look like a startled Chihuahua!"

El Martillo was beyond reason now. He threw his knife aside and pulled a heavy brass knuckle from his pocket. "I’m going to grind your teeth into powder, you dancing freak!"

He swung a massive haymaker.

The music in Alejo’s head shifted. The frantic, joyous trumpets of the salsa track faded into the sharp, melancholic staccato of an accordion. The air felt suddenly colder, sharper.

Alejo’s spine straightened. His chin tucked in. His eyes, usually darting around in fear, locked onto El Martillo’s throat with a predatory intensity that made the thug hesitate for a heartbeat. Alejo didn't know how, but he was smoldering. It was the smolder of a man who had lost everything in a rain-slicked alley in Buenos Aires.

As the punch came, Alejo didn't retreat. He stepped into the strike.

Gancho.

His leg hooked around El Martillo’s calf, and with a sharp, dramatic pivot of his torso, he redirected the thug’s massive weight. It was a masterpiece of physics and passion. El Martillo went airborne, his feet leaving the dusty ground as he performed an involuntary, mid-air somersault before slamming back-first onto a metal weighing scale.

CLANG!

The scale groaned under the impact. El Martillo lay there, gasping for air, the "Hammer" finally silenced by a man who looked like he belonged in a library, not a mosh pit.

[COMBAT ENDED.]

[RATING: S (SENSATIONAL!)]

[REWARDS: 200 Pesos (Recovered), +10 Agility, +5 'Street Cred' (Temporary).]

The music stopped. The neon screens vanished.

Alejo collapsed against a pillar, his legs shaking so violently he had to slide down to the floor. He looked at the three unconscious or groaning thugs, then at his own hands. "I... I just beat up three people with a mambo-tango hybrid. I’m going to be a viral video. I’m going to be 'The Dancing Vigilante' and I’ll have to move to another country to escape the shame."

"Your footwork was atrocious."

The voice was like a whip—sharp, cold, and echoing with an unmistakable Argentinian lilt.

Alejo jumped, nearly tripping over his own shoelaces. Standing at the edge of the loading dock was a woman who looked like she had stepped out of a high-fashion magazine and onto the set of a gritty action movie. Her hair was a dark, sleek ponytail, her eyes were the color of espresso, and she was currently holding a bag of organic avocados as if it were a weapon of war.

"Excuse me?" Alejo stammered.

"The Gancho," she said, stepping closer. Her presence was suffocating. "You led with your hip, not your core. If that brute had any balance at all, he would have crushed you like a grape. And your salsa? You were off-beat on the fourth measure. It was painful to watch."

"I... I wasn't trying to put on a show!" Alejo protested, his face heating up. "I was trying not to die!"

The woman narrowed her eyes, scanning him from head to toe. She paused when her gaze lingered on the space just above his head—the space where the System screens usually appeared. A flicker of recognition crossed her face.

"So," she whispered, her voice dropping an octave. "Another one. The System really is scraping the bottom of the barrel these days if it’s picking up nervous wrecks like you."

"You... you can see it?" Alejo gasped.

She didn't answer. Instead, she dropped her bag of avocados, stepped into his personal space, and grabbed his collar.

"I am Lucía Fernández," she hissed. "And if you’re going to be the one I have to partner with for the Regional Qualifiers, I am going to make your life a living hell. You have the rhythm of a broken washing machine, pibe. We start training at dawn. Don't be late, or I'll see if the 'Die' part of your System works better than the 'Dance' part."

Alejo could only blink. Tía wanted the grocery money, the System wanted him to dance, and now a terrifying Argentinian woman wanted to turn him into a weapon.

"Can I just go back to being a potato?" he squeaked.

Lucía’s grip tightened. "No."

The frantic mambo beats echoing from the studio's hidden speakers felt like hammer blows against his skin. Every time his brain tried to signal a retreat, the System fired a red alert, and Lucía followed it up with a grounding touch that made his skin crawl with forbidden electricity."If you don't relax your quads, you’re going to tear a hamstring," she said. The explosion at the Core had acted as a final, jagged period to their mission. Now, the aftermath was a suffocating void of smoke and silence. Alejo scrambled across the twisted remains of the Sanctum, his tactical boots scraping against shattered fiber-optics. Beside him, Lucía moved with a feline agility that defied the carnage, her red dress shredded into something more akin to armor. The Board was effectively blind. Their network was splintered, a cascading failure rippling through the city’s digital infrastructure. But as they hit the rain-slicked roof of a high-rise bridge—the only escape route that wouldn’t lead them into the hands of an interceptor squad—the air became thin. Static crawled across the atmosphere."They're rebooting the local node!" Lucía yelled over the roar of the city winds. Her face was smudged with industrial grease, her eyes fixed on the distant flashing beacons of an incoming containment craft. "If th

  • Chapter 24: Cracking the System Core

The console at the heart of the Board’s Sanctum didn’t look like a computer. It looked like a tomb of frozen light. Alejo knelt before the array of humming prisms, the bioluminescent readout of the system reflecting in his widening pupils. He wasn’t just looking at code; he was looking at the DNA of the city itself. His hands, caked in soot and dried blood, trembled as he hover-typed the sequence Lucía had spent hours forcing him to memorize in their frantic, late-night cram sessions.[WARNING: SYSTEM CORE ACCESS INITIATED. NEURAL FEEDBACK IMMINENT.]"Don't you dare flicker on me now," Alejo growled, slamming his fist into the casing when the screen blinked red. Beside him, Lucía was a storm of focused, violent activity. She was braced against the server-stack, her sub-machine gun swept over the entrance, her boots shifting against the glass floor like she was ready to snap the bones of anyone who dared turn the corner."Ninety seconds!" she shouted over the rising wail of the buildin

  • Chapter 23: The High-Stakes Performance

The sound of tactical boots echoed off the obsidian walls of the vault, a rhythmic clatter that sounded like a countdown to an execution. Alejo didn't count the beats; he absorbed them. He was inside the hub—the very heart of the Board’s central nervous system—and his internal System was vibrating with the frantic, unstable hum of a localized data breach.[WARNING: SYSTEM INTERFACE REJECTED BY HOST. OVERRIDING WITH KINETIC PRIORITY.]He felt the change instantly. The cold, logical data points in his vision bled into colors—a neon violet that matched the thumping bass of the ventilation fans. Beside him, Lucía moved like an apex predator, her crimson silk skirt shredded at the hem, revealing the hard, disciplined musculature of a woman who had spent a lifetime turning violence into art."We've got thirty seconds until the internal locks snap shut," Lucía spat, her voice cutting through the ambient drone. She bypassed th

  • Chapter 22: Unseen Eyes in the Spotlight

The spotlight wasn’t a source of illumination; it was a weaponized search grid. Alejo felt the hum of it under his skin—a needle-thin resonance emitted from the catwalks high above the auditorium, tracking the microscopic vibrations of his heartbeat. Every step he took on the mahogany stage felt like he was walking on the teeth of a giant."The sensor nodes are calibrated for a six-second loop," Lucía hissed against his ear. Her hand was pressed hard against his back, fingers digging into the seam of his suit jacket to guide him through a feint. She was radiating a dry, nervous heat that had nothing to do with the stage temperature. "If you miss the mark, they aren't just going to track our BPM; they're going to bridge the frequency and lobotomize us.""The loop doesn't account for the pivot," Alejo retorted, his voice strained. He spun her out, his palm finding the familiar curve of her waist, a fleeting contact that felt like grounding a live wire. He didn't just spin her for the s

  • Chapter 21: The Defector’s Warning

The safehouse—a damp, subterranean hollow tucked beneath an old water-purification plant—didn't offer much in terms of luxury, but it was structurally sound and dead-zoned against the Board’s high-frequency sensors. Alejo slumped against the cold concrete wall, his lungs burning. The violet glow of his System interface had settled into a steady, muted throb in his vision, no longer erratic, no longer demanding.A rhythmic scratching sound echoed from the heavy reinforced door. Alejo froze, hand sliding to the combat blade on his thigh.Lucía stood over him, her tactical vest discarded in a heap. Her hair was matted with sweat, a wild halo of dark curls, and the bruises on her shoulders were darkening into shades of angry indigo.
