The High Archmage had granted me a final grace—placing me under curfew, forbidden to leave the castle until vacation arrived. It was met with disapproval from the council and students alike. Whoever Symon was, one thing was crystal clear: he was trouble.

I returned to my chambers, promising myself I'd find out why. Once inside, I shut the door and called out to Grey.

"How may I help you?"

"What do I need to know about this Symon?"

There was a long pause, long enough that I started to wonder what exactly Grey was.

"Symon is a prodigy at everything he attempts. Born a noble, blessed with rich mana."

"So he's arrogant?"

"Almost."

"Who are his friends?"

He had to have someone he wasn't a jerk to.

"None."

I looked at the screen.

"None? Then who's Amelia?"

"Sir, you specifically instructed me never to speak of her again."

"When did I—" I started to yell, then stopped myself.

I sighed.

A soft knock sounded at the door.

"Come in."

Amelia stepped inside. She'd changed out of her dirtied robe into a cream-colored velvet dress.

"How's your head feeling?" she asked, almost immediately.

I shrugged.

"Nothing I can't handle."

[Tell her to leave.]

That voice was back.

"Do you need anything?" she asked.

"No... I—"

She paused.

"Sorry I dragged you into another mess."

"It's okay."

[You idiot. It's not okay.]

I sighed.

She turned to go.

"Amelia," I said before I could stop myself.

"Goodnight."

I'd meant to ask about my memories, but decided against it.

She nodded and left the room.

"Grey."

"Lord Symon."

"How do we undo this sync? I don't think I can live like this."

I said it without much conviction. Truthfully, I'd liked how my body moved earlier—no collapsing, no reaching for an inhaler. I liked the way my chest cut into defined muscle.

"There's never been a case of someone reversing their Twin-Souled state. It's permanent."

"How long before anyone else finds out?"

"Given how you acted at tonight's council meeting, I'd say very soon. But it won't hurt you—your kind is rare here, and commands a great deal of respect."

"If that was meant to comfort me, it didn't work."

"I'm sorry you feel that way."

I waved Grey away and moved toward the fireplace. The wood crackled softly, warmth spreading through the room.

This wasn't happening. I was in another world, in a body that looked like mine on the outside but carried memories I had both lived and never lived at once.

If I really had died on that hospital bed, and this place was neither heaven nor hell, then maybe my soul had reincarnated. But that didn't add up either—every isekai novel I'd ever read had the protagonist starting fresh, not waking up halfway into someone else's life.

I moved to the window. All I could see was vast green land stretching toward two moons on the horizon.

"Grey."

"Yes, Lord Symon."

"How long until vacation?"

"A fortnight from now."

"Do you know of any other Twin-Souled like me?"

"Yes. One."

"Who?"

Another hesitation.

"Lucifero."

The name struck something in me, and my fingers curled tight.

That reaction hadn't been mine.

It was Symon's.

"Who is he?"

"First son of King Elmond and Queen Khalifa."

"Do you know why Symon resents him?"

"I can't provide that information. I'm only embedded in your core."

I paused, staring back out at the two moons.

"What is this world called?"

"Odbeara. An Earth parallel to your own."

So I wasn't dead.

That, at least, was some relief.

[I need my body back. Undo whatever spell you used on me.]

The voice returned, sharper this time.

"Symon? Is that you?" I asked, gathering the nerve.

[Yes. Undo whatever spell trapped me in here.]

"I'm sorry—what? I didn't do anything."

[Don't play games with me.]

"Look, friend, I don't know what's happening any more than you do. Maybe try helping instead of just being background noise."

Silence. I was relieved he had finally shut up, but he whispered in my head again.

[There's a book on the table. It should tell you why this is happening.]

I crossed the room fast, practically lightning, and grabbed the book. The pages smelled of old ink, brittle and threatening to crumble at the edges.

I read the first line aloud.

"Twin-Souled: A Gift or a Curse?"

The author's name had faded too badly to make out—I couldn't even tell if it started with a G or C.

I flipped through the first and second pages. But nothing answered the question—it only raised more.

I dropped the book in frustration.

Another knock came at the door.

"Come in."

Astrid entered this time, a small bottle in hand.

"I made you another elixir. You should keep this one on you."

She set it on the table, then crossed to me. Her hand, cool and smooth, pressed against my forehead.

"Good—your fever broke," she said, sinking onto the edge of the bed.

"What do you know about Twin-Souled?" I blurted out.

[Great.]

She looked at me with those wide eyes, as if she hadn't quite caught the question.

"Only what everyone else knows." She leaned forward. "Same person, different soul."

Then she stopped, studying me.

"Why do you ask?"

"No reason," I said.

She stood and stepped closer—I didn't see it coming—and her lips brushed mine before I jerked back.

"What—"

"We shouldn't do that," I said.

She nodded. Her cheeks flared red. She turned and left without another word.

The silence afterward was deafening. Maybe sleeping was the practical thing to do.

I'd barely reached the bed when thunder cracked outside, hard enough to rattle the windows in their frames.

Grey flickered into view.

"Lord Symon, it appears the academy is under attack."

"Under attack? By who?"

"Judging by the sheer volume of mana, it's the demon princess and prince."

My body moved before I told it to. My hand grabbed the sword on the table and the black robe in one motion.

In the hallway, students were rushing toward their dorms.

I reached the main hall. Lucifero was there, talking in a hushed voice to twelve other students. I could recognize them from Symon's memories; they called themselves the twelve commandments.

"You're supposed to be under curfew," Lucifero said as I passed him.

"Try and stop me," I growled.

I went for the window instead and launched myself over. I descended a height of four stories and landed with a heavy thud in the courtyard.

"Grey. Still there?"

"Still here, Lord Symon. What do you need?"

"How do I let Symon take control?"

I wasn't panicking, exactly, but the two figures ahead of me dredged up memories that weren't mine—the girl with twin horns and a forked, snake-like tongue was Mazikeen, the demon princess, and beside her stood her brother, Zeldryl, the demon prince.

This wasn't something I could bluff through on instinct alone.

"Symon is bound within your soul. There's no way to hand over control—the two of you are already synced."

Zeldryl attacked without warning.

There was no time to block.

His sword drove clean through my chest and out my back, the force hurling me into the brick wall behind me.

I waited for Vax to fall asleep before retiring to my room. Seeing her cry weighed on my chest in ways I didn't expect. During the exchange with Lucifero, she must have worried about my safety. I had been reckless. The hall was too quiet. Perhaps everyone dreaded running into Symon Wardreth now. I knew I would take the entire blame, and no one would point a finger at Lucifero; the realization made my blood boil.I landed in bed like a husk. Sleep didn't come for hours; I kept tossing and turning from side to side until I finally sat up."I know exactly what it means. It means you were handed everything the rest of us had to earn. Magic. Title. Her."Lucifero's words rippled through my mind. I could see his face, the way it looked at me like I was some pile of filth not fit to be in these halls."She's a Wardreth. Everything that name touches deserves to burn."I shut my ears with my palms, as though doing so would keep his words from my head.Lucifero didn't just hate Symon, didn't ju

Time rewound to the moment I heard Lucifero's voice. I shoved Vax out of the way and drew my sword. His attack still caught me. The ice was stinging, and it cut my knuckles."You—" I didn't get the rest of the sentence out before he moved again, blade trailing frost, the temperature in the hall dropping fast enough to fog every breath around us.I brought my sword up to meet the next swing, and the impact sent a shudder up both arms. He wasn't holding back.Whatever restraint he usually kept wrapped around himself had come completely undone."You could have killed her," I snarled."I don't care." He said it so flatly, so simply, that it landed harder than if he'd screamed it. "I never have."That answer told me everything I needed to know and none of what I wanted. He came at me again, faster this time, ice forming in jagged spears along the floor with every step he took, and I felt the heat build in my chest — the tell I'd learned to recognize by now, the one that meant I was about t

"Get away from her!" I screamed even before I was fully in the hall. Everyone present turned to the door.Mazikeen sat beside Vax, holding one strand of her braided hair like she was checking it out. Vax laughed at something she'd said. I crossed the room in a long stride and yanked Vax up by her hand."Ouch!" Vax winced. When she saw the frown on my face, she didn't protest further."You will do well to stay away from her." I was surprised at how low and deep my voice sounded."You're paranoid; I don't recall you being this paranoid." Mazikeen smiled. She had the effortless ability to smile like a devil."We were just talking," Vax whispered."Your sister is a natural at magic; she'll surpass even you when she gets to our level.""And don't think I know that?" I snapped. She sighed and crossed one leg over the other; her cut dress slid off, revealing her thighs. I looked away."What do I have to do to earn a little breathing space with you?""How about crawling back to your hellhole

  • Chapter 16: Out of My Way

“Do I need to tell you two to behave?” Zudrik looked at Lucifero first, then his eyes darted to me. Neither of us answered. He sighed.“Your father decided to foster peace between our realms. I share your disapproval of it, but we cannot risk a war,” he said.“He should have picked another academy aside from this one.”I looked at Lucifero; his hand was on the hilt of his sword; his hand was always on the hilt of his sword. He looked taller now.“And you?”“I promise to stir no trouble,” I told him. He didn't look like he believed me.“Symon, you've said those words to me so many times in the past, and each time you manage to do the exact opposite.”“I have a sister to look after,” I said.“Stay away from Mazikeen. I have a hard time trusting that demon.” Zudrik turned to Lucifero. “I need you to lead any mission those two are involved in.”Lucifero nodded slowly, like he had no choice but to accept. We left Zudrik's office in silence, which was somehow worse than if he'd kept yelling

Odbeara had a way of throwing the worst news at me at the first light of each day. I found out the same way I found out about most disasters lately — by walking into a room and immediately regretting it.The main hall was packed. Every guild master was there, and students had crammed themselves along the balconies above like something worth watching was about to happen.Vance stood near the front, arms crossed, jaw tight."What's going on?" I asked, sliding in beside Astrid."You're about to find out," she said. "And you're not going to like it."Zudrik walked up to the dais, and the room went quiet. He cleared his throat."By order of the crown," he said, "and in accordance with terms negotiated following the incident with the Emperor's sons — two new members will be joining the Blazing Sun Guild. Effective immediately."A ripple went through the crowd. My stomach dropped before my brain caught up with why.The doors at the back of the hall opened.I felt them before I saw them. Tha

I waited until I was alone before I let myself fall apart, just a little.Astrid had bought the "I'm fine" for about as long as it took her to finish her sentence about moonroot elixirs, which was to say, not at all. She'd walked me to my room anyway, made me drink water like that fixed anything, and left only after I promised — badly, unconvincingly — that I'd sleep it off.I had no intention of sleeping."Grey."The screen flickered to life at the foot of my bed, patient as ever, infuriating as ever."Yes, Lord Symon.""I need you to explain something, and I need you to actually explain it this time. Not the version where you say three words and let me sit in existential crisis for a week.""I make no promises.""Grey.""Very well. What would you like explained?"I sat forward, elbows on my knees.
