As soon as Shaun heard the unfamiliar voice, he spun around. However, there was no one there. He was completely alone in the room, just like he had been to begin with. The only other person had been the maid, who had shown up and left. Thinking he might have been imagining things, he was going to pretend he hadn't heard it when he heard it again.

[Dear user, please don't ignore us. It's very important that the user listens.]

This time, a message popped up right in front of him. It was so sudden that he jumped back and hit his back against the table. With a groan, he leaned against the table while placing a hand on the spot that hit the table. That had hurt. The pain just amplified the feeling that this was real. Of course, he had known it was real after being bombarded with memories and feeling cold water on his face.

Shaking his head, he focused on the more important matter at hand. "Who or what are you?"

[I'm the system that has been sent to support you, dear user.]

[Once it was sensed that a native of this world had actually transmigrated here, I was dispatched to assist you.]

Shaun frowned. "Explain."

[Well, you're not supposed to be here.]

Unsure how he was supposed to react to those words, he calmly asked, "Can you elaborate?"

[I don't have the authorization to tell you everything, but in simple terms, you weren't supposed to reincarnate into this world or regain your past life's memories.]

[Once this blunder was sensed, I was sent to be your partner and help you in every way I could.]

He blinked. That was a lot to process, but he was strangely calm about it. It was actually quite unnerving how quickly he assimilated into his new life. Shaun wasn't even batting an eye at the appearance of the system. He supposed it was thanks to having memories of both his lives that he wasn't running around like a headless chicken.

"I see, so does that mean if I want revenge, you'll help me?" he asked as he slowly got dressed.

[If that's what the user desires, then the system will help as long as it doesn't break the rules.]

"What are the rules?" he asked as he took a moment to admire himself in the mirror.

[That isn't something I'm allowed to tell the user, but I can tell the user when the user is about to break the rules.]

"I'll allow it," he said reluctantly.

Shaun didn't know enough about the system to be able to tell if it was safe to ignore its words or pick a fight with it. He had read plenty of webnovels where the system could either be a legitimate ally or a horrifying enemy. Until he was completely certain of where it stood, he couldn't act too rashly. The last thing he wanted was to experience another early death.

Once he was done dressing, he took one look at the clock and grimaced. He was supposed to be having breakfast with his family in the dining room, but he was clearly running late. The maid from earlier was probably supposed to wake him up earlier so he could arrive on time. However, he wasn't really surprised she hadn't said anything. This wouldn't be the first time he was late.

Recalling all the previous times he had a meal with the family, he scoffed. Honestly, it couldn't really be called a family meal. While he would love to skip out on the event, he couldn't. For one, he needed to eat. The servants weren't going to save food for him if he didn't arrive during the designated meal times, and he wasn't going to try sneaking into the kitchen to steal food. He wasn't going to stoop that low.

The other reason was because of the rumors he had been hearing and his memories of his past life. Like any generic fantasy story, the world was being threatened by a demon king, and the only ones who could defeat him were the heroes. The heroes meant to defeat the demon king were going to be summoned or had already been summoned. Unfortunately, since he was practically a nobody, he didn't have access to such valuable information.

If he went to breakfast, he might be able to glean some more information about the matter. The chances were slim, but he wasn't going to waste it by doing nothing. He needed to be more proactive if he wanted to make the most of his life.

As he was about to leave the room, he stopped with his hands on the handle and asked, "System, is it possible for you to be less eye catching and be more discreet? If anyone finds out I'm talking to you, I'll be in big trouble."

[Of course, dear user.]

The message vanished, leaving no traces of the system anywhere. Of course, he didn't think for a second that it was gone. Even though he had no proof, it felt like the system was lingering over his shoulder like a pet. As long as it didn't cause trouble, he was going to ignore it.

Entering the hallway, he spotted a couple of maids down the hall. The moment they saw him, they had disgusted expressions on their faces. He could feel his own disgust rise up at how they were disrespecting him. While a baron family might be at the bottom of nobility, he was still nobility. They should treat him with respect.

However, he didn't act on his anger and simply ignored its existence. It was quite easy to pull off since it was a tactic he nourished for a long time. Acting out now would only give him grief later in the future. Passing by all the servants, he soon found himself standing in front of the dining hall. His heart raced at the thought of seeing his family, and not for a good reason. Taking a deep breath, he pushed the door open.

Shaun instantly found himself back in his old world, facing his bullies, who had cornered him yet again. He wasn't the baron's illegitimate son but a regular college student with no way to defend himself. Suddenly, a sharp pain and the taste of blood filled his mouth, breaking the illusion. He had bitten down on his tongue hard enough to draw blood. He grimaced as the same person from before shouted, "Hey! I'm talking to you. Are you deaf or mute?""Maybe he's both," one of the women said before cracking up.The rest started laughing along as well, acting like a bunch of hyenas. Shaun so wanted to storm up to them and sock one of them in the face, but he restrained himself. This wasn't the right time to act. He had to stay composed and not make a scene. However, the thought of bowing down to them made him sick to his stomach.[Dear user, do you want the system to intervene?]Shaun slightly shook his head. Even though he wanted to take it up on its offer, he couldn't. He wasn't sure wh

  • Chapter 22: Speaking With Aria (2)

Grasping onto the opportunity that Shaun presented, Aria said, "That's alright. I'm sure whatever information you have will be helpful.""I can tell you a little about the kingdom. The Kingdom of Chaz is one of twenty something countries. It's not the biggest, but it isn't the smallest either. It's surrounded on three sides by the ocean so it only shares its border with one other country," he explained."I see," she said with an uncertain look. The information he was telling her wasn't really all that useful for her. It wasn't like she would ever leave the country to visit other places. Heroes were restricted to the countries they were summoned to, so learning about them wouldn't help her in the long run. However, he knew how important information was, so he needed to at least give her some background information."The crown prince is quite reliable, and you can count on him to be fair and just," he continued.Of course, he was just saying that for

Remembering that they weren't alone, Shaun quickly bowed as he said, "It's an honor to meet the crown prince. I apologize for my poor manners, your highness."The prince waved a hand as he said, "It's quite alright. It must have been quite shocking to receive my summons.""I will admit that I can't understand why the crown prince would summon someone like me to the castle," he said as he glanced back at Aria. "Especially in the presence of a hero."Raising an eyebrow, the prince said, "I'm surprised you know she's a hero considering you have never met her.""Your highness wouldn't allow just anyone to stay in your presence, and it is well known what the crown prince's fiance looks like," Shaun said. With a nod, the crown prince said, "You're quite intelligent despite your standing."Twitching at the words, Shaun forced himself not to show any other reaction. He couldn't say for sure if the prince was trying to praise or insult him since he d

  • Chapter 20: Meeting Royalty

"Enough," the baron snapped, causing everyone to fall silent. "Shaun, explain yourself.""I have no clue, sir. I've never met the prince before," Shaun said as he kept his head down.It wasn't a lie. While he might have seen the prince on occasion, he had never actually interacted with the man. Even when he snuck into the castle and followed after his family several days ago, he never sought the prince out. He didn't have a reason to. There was nothing for him to gain and everything to lose by meeting with the prince. He would have likely been killed the moment he showed his face."Of course you didn't," his father snapped. "That doesn't explain why the prince would suddenly want to meet you."Shaun chose to be silent so as not to draw attention to himself. Right now, the man was in no mood to be listening to anything Shaun had to say. It would only incur the man's wrath, and Shaun would rather not have to endure several hits from his so called father. • Chapter 19: Trauma

Instantly, everything had gone back to normal. Shaun was no longer looking at himself and his demonic looking bullies. He blinked several times as he looked for someone who had spoken up. His eyes fell on a familiar man. It was one of the other heroes. Shaun hadn't expected any of them to step up and interfere when the majority of the heroes were in the same group.A part of him felt bitter. Back in his first life, no one had stepped up for him. Everyone always looked away, as they had been afraid to be the new target if they interfered. Of course he would have done the same, but it still left a bitter aftertaste knowing that no one had been willing to help him. No one had even tried like the hero was currently doing."What do you want?" one of the bullies asked. "Can't you see we're busy?""Why are you bothering him? He's trying to do his job," a woman said as she crossed her arms."We're heroes. It's his job to serve us," one of the female bullies said.

  • Chapter 18: Chance Encounter

Becky's face burned from humiliation. It wasn't her fault that she had dirtied her clothes in the heat of the moment. Shaun had been looming over her with the threat of death hanging over her neck. If it weren't for that, she would have never made such a mess of herself. Then she realized the other part of his sentence as her face scrunched up in confusion again."I'm returning to the mansion? You're letting me go?" she asked. He scoffed. "Do you really think I'll let you go without any consequences? No. You said it yourself. You'll do anything to live, so you're my slave now.""What?" Becky blurted out as she scrambled to her feet. "What are you talking about?""It's just as I said. You dared to cross me, so you're paying the price. You're my slave until I decide to get rid of you," he said. She stared at him for several long moments before saying, "You can't be serious. Slavery isn't even legal in the kingdom.""If it involves magic, it's binding," he reminded her. While it was true
