The first thing Shaun saw was his family eating their meal, or rather, finishing it. They either had been eating for a while or they ate fairly quickly. It didn't really matter, as the end result was the same. If he actually cared about the family, he would have been hurt by the actions. Of course, this was nothing new, so the sight wasn't a huge shock. Without giving away any emotions, he took the seat next to his half sister.

She didn't bat an eye at his presence as he waited for his food. His breakfast was delivered and wasn't as impressive as that of the rest of the family. Of course, it wasn't bad either. The servants weren't crazy enough to feed him dirt or starve him. They always made sure to do the bare minimum so they wouldn't get in trouble with the head of the family. They had to keep up appearances after all.

Nibbling at his food, he waited to hear if there were any special news was and didn't have to wait for long, as his father said, "I have some news for everyone."

All eyes turned to his father. It was inevitable that everyone would be curious about what he had to say. His father normally didn't bring up any news unless he thought it was important. Each person had a different idea of what his father could be saying, but Shaun was fairly certain that he knew what it was, and his father didn't disappoint with his next words.

"As you know, the heroes have been summoned to deal with the demons. You are to be on your best behavior, or else," his "father" warned.

Shaun almost scoffed at the man's words, but he bit his tongue so he wouldn't get in trouble. No one who ever used the words or else was scary. He had heard the words too many times to take anyone who used them seriously. Those who used them were trash. Instead, he studied his "sibling's" reactions. They were as he expected.

They were curious about the heroes, but they weren't dumb enough to cause trouble, which was a miracle. Everyone just nodded their heads like the obedient sheep they were. Of course, no one paid Shaun any mind, even though he hadn't nodded along with them. He had already been written off. There was no way they would bring him along to catch a glimpse of the heroes.

[That's no good. You have to see the heroes.]

He frowned. Why would the system insist he see the heroes? Since he was just an insignificant child of a baron house, they had nothing to do with him. As long as he did his own thing, they wouldn't cross paths. The system didn't give him an answer and only repeated that it was essential that he go see the heroes. However, he didn't see how it would benefit him.

[Then the system will give the user a quest. People from the user's world like quests.]

[Quest]

[Meet the Heroes]

[The heroes have been summoned from another world to defeat the demon king.]

[Meet the heroes.]

[You will be rewarded once you meet the heroes.]

Shaun was still reluctant, even with the quest being displayed in front of him. The system hadn't said what he would get in exchange for meeting the heroes. It could easily give him something worthless, like shoes. Sneaking out to meet the heroes wasn't worth the trouble that it would bring him. His father would surely tan his hide if he was caught.

[If the user is worried about being caught, then the system will give you this.]

[You have received an Invisibility Ring.]

Immediately, he checked his surroundings the moment the ring fell into his palm. Fortunately, no one seemed to notice it since his hands had been underneath the table. He nearly breathed a sigh of relief, but he couldn't afford to give himself away. Instead, he forced himself not to outwardly react while he was cursing the system for being so reckless. They could have been caught.

[Apologies. This system is unused to this situation. This system was just created once it was discovered that you had memories of your past life.]

Wasn't that literally an hour ago? He was dealing with a baby system. Shaun almost grimaced when there was a banging sound. He flinched as he looked away from the system and saw that his "father" had slammed his hands against the table. One look at his "father's" face told him that he had messed up. He must have said something to him, and Shaun missed it because of the system.

"Do you understand?" his father spat.

"Yes, Baron Rodriquez," Shaun obediently said.

The man leaned back in his chair and observed his other children as he said, "Then you may all leave."

With those words, the man got to his feet and left the dining room. As soon as the man was gone, one of his older brothers snickered. Shaun ignored them, as he knew reacting would usually only make things worse. Unfortunately, today wasn't his day, as the same older brother sneered when he failed to get a reaction out of Shaun.

"Aren't you even a little bit upset that you can't see the heroes?" his brother asked.

He glanced at his brother and noticed how everyone else was waiting for him to react. "No."

His brother's face turned ugly as he said, "It's master to you."

Forcing himself not to sigh at such a childish reaction, he said, "No, master."

This seemed to appease his brother, who huffed and got out of his seat. "Well, you better get to work. If you make one mistake, you're out of here."

Soon, he was followed by his other brothers and sisters, who didn't bother to give him a second glance. As they were leaving, Shaun considered his brother's words. Their father must have assigned him some work. However, thanks to the system distracting him, he wasn't able to listen. Now he had no idea what was expected of him, and he had to guess what his father wanted him to do. It really was turning out to be a bad day.

Shaun instantly found himself back in his old world, facing his bullies, who had cornered him yet again. He wasn't the baron's illegitimate son but a regular college student with no way to defend himself. Suddenly, a sharp pain and the taste of blood filled his mouth, breaking the illusion. He had bitten down on his tongue hard enough to draw blood. He grimaced as the same person from before shouted, "Hey! I'm talking to you. Are you deaf or mute?""Maybe he's both," one of the women said before cracking up.The rest started laughing along as well, acting like a bunch of hyenas. Shaun so wanted to storm up to them and sock one of them in the face, but he restrained himself. This wasn't the right time to act. He had to stay composed and not make a scene. However, the thought of bowing down to them made him sick to his stomach.[Dear user, do you want the system to intervene?]Shaun slightly shook his head. Even though he wanted to take it up on its offer, he couldn't. He wasn't sure wh

  • Chapter 22: Speaking With Aria (2)

Grasping onto the opportunity that Shaun presented, Aria said, "That's alright. I'm sure whatever information you have will be helpful.""I can tell you a little about the kingdom. The Kingdom of Chaz is one of twenty something countries. It's not the biggest, but it isn't the smallest either. It's surrounded on three sides by the ocean so it only shares its border with one other country," he explained."I see," she said with an uncertain look. The information he was telling her wasn't really all that useful for her. It wasn't like she would ever leave the country to visit other places. Heroes were restricted to the countries they were summoned to, so learning about them wouldn't help her in the long run. However, he knew how important information was, so he needed to at least give her some background information."The crown prince is quite reliable, and you can count on him to be fair and just," he continued.Of course, he was just saying that for

Remembering that they weren't alone, Shaun quickly bowed as he said, "It's an honor to meet the crown prince. I apologize for my poor manners, your highness."The prince waved a hand as he said, "It's quite alright. It must have been quite shocking to receive my summons.""I will admit that I can't understand why the crown prince would summon someone like me to the castle," he said as he glanced back at Aria. "Especially in the presence of a hero."Raising an eyebrow, the prince said, "I'm surprised you know she's a hero considering you have never met her.""Your highness wouldn't allow just anyone to stay in your presence, and it is well known what the crown prince's fiance looks like," Shaun said. With a nod, the crown prince said, "You're quite intelligent despite your standing."Twitching at the words, Shaun forced himself not to show any other reaction. He couldn't say for sure if the prince was trying to praise or insult him since he d

  • Chapter 20: Meeting Royalty

"Enough," the baron snapped, causing everyone to fall silent. "Shaun, explain yourself.""I have no clue, sir. I've never met the prince before," Shaun said as he kept his head down.It wasn't a lie. While he might have seen the prince on occasion, he had never actually interacted with the man. Even when he snuck into the castle and followed after his family several days ago, he never sought the prince out. He didn't have a reason to. There was nothing for him to gain and everything to lose by meeting with the prince. He would have likely been killed the moment he showed his face."Of course you didn't," his father snapped. "That doesn't explain why the prince would suddenly want to meet you."Shaun chose to be silent so as not to draw attention to himself. Right now, the man was in no mood to be listening to anything Shaun had to say. It would only incur the man's wrath, and Shaun would rather not have to endure several hits from his so called father. • Chapter 19: Trauma

Instantly, everything had gone back to normal. Shaun was no longer looking at himself and his demonic looking bullies. He blinked several times as he looked for someone who had spoken up. His eyes fell on a familiar man. It was one of the other heroes. Shaun hadn't expected any of them to step up and interfere when the majority of the heroes were in the same group.A part of him felt bitter. Back in his first life, no one had stepped up for him. Everyone always looked away, as they had been afraid to be the new target if they interfered. Of course he would have done the same, but it still left a bitter aftertaste knowing that no one had been willing to help him. No one had even tried like the hero was currently doing."What do you want?" one of the bullies asked. "Can't you see we're busy?""Why are you bothering him? He's trying to do his job," a woman said as she crossed her arms."We're heroes. It's his job to serve us," one of the female bullies said.

  • Chapter 18: Chance Encounter

Becky's face burned from humiliation. It wasn't her fault that she had dirtied her clothes in the heat of the moment. Shaun had been looming over her with the threat of death hanging over her neck. If it weren't for that, she would have never made such a mess of herself. Then she realized the other part of his sentence as her face scrunched up in confusion again."I'm returning to the mansion? You're letting me go?" she asked. He scoffed. "Do you really think I'll let you go without any consequences? No. You said it yourself. You'll do anything to live, so you're my slave now.""What?" Becky blurted out as she scrambled to her feet. "What are you talking about?""It's just as I said. You dared to cross me, so you're paying the price. You're my slave until I decide to get rid of you," he said. She stared at him for several long moments before saying, "You can't be serious. Slavery isn't even legal in the kingdom.""If it involves magic, it's binding," he reminded her. While it was true
