Smoke hung over the northern horizon like a dark shroud, blotting out the first light of dawn. The once-proud city of Valenreach, jewel of the northern trade routes, now trembled under the approach of the Riftborn. Towering silhouettes marched through the lingering fog, their jagged forms glinting with stolen Aether.

Kael hovered atop the cliffs that overlooked the city, wings of molten Phoenixfire unfurling in the cold wind. Below, Valenreach’s spires and battlements were dwarfed by the monstrous forms of the invaders. The city’s defenders, both trained mages and hardened soldiers, readied themselves, faces pale with terror yet determined to hold the walls.

“This is no ordinary raid,” Kael said, his voice low but carrying over the rising wind. Beside him, Lira’s staff glowed faintly, the glyphs of protective wards etched into the air like a lattice of shimmering light. “The Riftborn are testing Eldoria’s defenses. Valenreach will not survive unless we act.”

The horizon burned with unnatural light. From the northern rifts, the Starbound surged—a relentless wave of alien, radiant forms that shimmered with impossible geometries, their eyes like shards of frozen stars. Each movement radiated energy that warped the very air, rippling like heat over water. Eldoria’s skies darkened, pierced by streaks of celestial light as if the heavens themselves were splitting. Kael stood atop the Arcane Spire, the rebuilt heart of Eldoria’s magical governance, his Phoenix-Aether ablaze. The flames of his wings cast a crimson-gold glow over the council and the defensive battlements below. Every shard of his being thrummed with power, a perfect symphony of rebirth and fury. The first rift-born attacks had left him poisoned, fractured—but now, fully reforged by the Phoenix, he was more than a mage. He was the embodiment of Eldoria’s last hope. Beside him, Lira tightened her grip on her staff, her eyes scanning the horizon. “They’re coming faster than predict

  • Chapter 144: The Council Rebuilds

The ruins of Valenreach lay smoldering beneath a crimson sky, the faint scent of charred stone and molten Aether lingering like a persistent warning. From the keep’s battered walls, Kael surveyed the aftermath. Smoke spiraled from shattered rooftops, and the streets below were strewn with debris, bodies, and the twisted remnants of Riftborn minions. Silence had descended, heavy and oppressive, broken only by distant cries and the groan of collapsing structures. Lira approached cautiously, her staff casting a soft protective glow that shimmered over the remaining council members and survivors huddled within the keep. “It’s worse than we feared,” she said, voice tight. “We’ve taken a blow, Kael… but they’re still out there. And we’re not prepared for what comes next.” Kael didn’t respond immediately. His eyes, glowing faintly with Phoenix-Aether, scanned the horizon. Even now, smaller rifts flickered across the northern plains, jagged tears in the fabric of reality that pulsed with ra

  • Chapter 142: The Rift War Begins

The first tremors began at dawn. Eldoria’s horizon shimmered, the edges of the sky quivering like heat over molten stone. Rifts tore open without warning, jagged cracks in the fabric of reality, spilling raw Aether into the world. From them crawled creatures that defied natural law—amorphous beasts of shadow and crystal, wings ablaze with stolen starfire, and bodies that seemed to shift between solid and intangible forms. Kael stood at the Arcane Academy’s balcony, his wings fully unfurled, Phoenixfire crackling along every feather. His eyes scanned the rift-laced skyline. The afterglow of his rebirth still radiated from him, bathing the spires in golden light, but even that warmth could not quell the rising tide of chaos. “They’re coming,” Lira said, her voice tight. She stood beside him, staff gripped so firmly that her knuckles were pale. “Every rift we’ve contained… it’s spreading. The Starbound aren’t just scouting—they’re invading.” Kael nodded, feeling the pulse of the rift

  • Chapter 41: The phoenix rebirth

The halls of the Arcane Academy were eerily silent after the first death. The air still vibrated with residual Aether, lingering like smoke from a half-extinguished fire. Kael stood alone in the central atrium, the fragment of the consumed council member tucked within a containment sphere. Even now, it pulsed faintly, a heartbeat echoing with menace. He felt the corruption inside him thrumming in time with it—a stark reminder that his battle had come at a cost far greater than mere exhaustion.Kael’s wings, once molten with Phoenixfire, sagged with fatigue, their edges charred and brittle. Every movement sent agony through his veins. The corruption had burrowed deep into his Aether, poisoning it from the inside, threatening to sever his bond with the Phoenix entirely. He closed his eyes, reaching for the spirit that had carried him through countless battles.“Phoenix…” he whispered, his voice trembling. “I need you now, more than ever.”The air shifted. Heat and light swirled around h

  • Chapter 140: The First Death

The Arcane Academy had never seemed so quiet. Even the usual hum of protective wards felt dim, as if the building itself sensed the gathering storm. Kael moved through the halls with a measured pace, his eyes scanning every corner. The shards—fragments of Starbound energy—were not just anomalies; they were active threats, leeching life and reality around them. Today, the Rift Council had convened to investigate the shards that had silently slipped into the Academy’s depths, and the tension was palpable. The first council member, Tharen Voss, approached the central chamber, his robes flowing like liquid shadows behind him. He had always been calm, unshakable in the face of minor threats. But today, his steps faltered slightly, his fingers twitching as if feeling some unseen force. Kael noticed and frowned. “Stay focused,” Kael murmured, not taking his eyes off the wards projecting from the chamber’s floor. Phoenixfire rippled faintly along his arms, the embers glowing like molten sta
