The journey out of the Whispering Woods was far less treacherous than the path in, but the weight of their encounter with Lyra lingered. Ethan held the newly acquired fragment in his hand, its faint glow pulsing in sync with the artifact around his neck. The forest seemed quieter now, as if acknowledging their victory.

“So, what’s the plan now?”Mia asked, breaking the silence. She glanced at Ethan, her notebook clutched tightly. “We have two fragments, but how many more are there?”

Ethan frowned, his gaze distant. “Lyra didn’t say. But if each one is guarded like that, it’s going to be a long road.”

Silver trotted ahead, his ears twitching as he scanned their surroundings. His energy was high despite the earlier battle, a stark contrast to Ethan’s exhaustion.

“We need to regroup and figure out where to go next,” Ethan continued. “Maybe Lyra’s warning will make more sense once we’ve had time to think.”

By the time they reached the edge of the forest, the sun was setting, casting the sky in shades of orange and pink. The town of Westhaven lay ahead, its familiar rooftops a welcome sight after days in the wilderness.

“Finally,” Mia said, exhaling in relief. “A real bed and some food that isn’t dried rations. I’m in.”

Ethan chuckled. “Let’s check in with Mr. Grayson first. He might know something about the fragments or the seal.”

Mia groaned but nodded, following Ethan as they made their way through the cobblestone streets. The townsfolk greeted them warmly, though a few cast wary glances at Silver, who trotted faithfully at Ethan’s side.

Mr. Grayson’s workshop was as cluttered as ever, filled with shelves of books, tools, and strange artifacts. The old man looked up from his workbench as they entered, his eyes lighting up.

“Ethan, Mia! Back already?”he said, wiping his hands on his apron. “And with a new glow about you. I’d wager you’ve found something important.”

Ethan nodded, holding out the fragment. “We found this in the Whispering Woods. It’s part of the seal, isn’t it?”

Grayson took the fragment carefully, his expression thoughtful. “Indeed it is. This is a fragment of light, one of the components of the Seal of Eryndor. You’re making remarkable progress, but I’m afraid your journey is only beginning.”

“Do you know where the other fragments are?”Mia asked, leaning forward eagerly.

Grayson shook his head. “Not precisely. The fragments were scattered long ago to prevent their misuse. But I do know this: the next fragment lies in the Ashen Highlands. It’s a treacherous place, and you’ll need more than just courage to retrieve it.”

Ethan’s brow furrowed. “What do you mean?”

Grayson gestured to Silver. “Your bond with your companion is strong, but you’ll need allies. The corruption grows stronger with each fragment you claim. It will take more than one tamed beast to stand against it.”

The next morning, Ethan and Mia stood at the outskirts of town, preparing to leave for the Ashen Highlands. Silver paced nearby, his energy palpable. Ethan’s thoughts were heavy with Grayson’s warning.

“How are we supposed to find more allies?” Ethan asked, adjusting the straps on his pack. “It’s not like we can just stumble across them.”

As if in response, a commotion erupted near the town square. Shouts and the sound of breaking wood drew their attention.

“What now?”Mia muttered, already moving toward the noise.

When they arrived, they found a group of townsfolk gathered around a massive, bear-like creature with glowing red eyes. It was snarling and swiping at anyone who got too close, its movements erratic and frenzied. The signs of corruption were unmistakable.

“Looks like we found our next problem,” Ethan said, stepping forward.

“Ethan, wait!”Mia called after him, but he was already moving.

Silver growled, stepping into position beside Ethan. The artifact began to glow as Ethan reached for its power, his bond with Silver strengthening. The bear-like creature roared, charging toward them with surprising speed.

The battle was intense. The corrupted beast’s strength was overwhelming, its attacks relentless. But Ethan and Silver fought with precision, their movements perfectly synchronized. Mia shouted advice from the sidelines, her sharp eyes catching openings that Ethan exploited.

As the battle reached its peak, Ethan saw his chance. The artifact flared brightly, and he directed its energy toward the creature. A golden light enveloped it, and the corruption began to fade. When the light subsided, the bear-like creature collapsed, its eyes now clear and calm.

Ethan approached cautiously, placing a hand on its massive head. The creature huffed softly, its body relaxing under his touch.

“Looks like we’ve got a new friend,” Mia said, stepping up beside him.

Ethan smiled, feeling a new bond form. “Welcome to the team, big guy.”

The townsfolk cheered, their fear replaced with gratitude. As Ethan and Mia prepared to leave, the newly tamed beast following close behind, Ethan felt a renewed sense of purpose.

The road ahead was uncertain, but with each step, he grew stronger not just in power, but in the bonds he forged along the way.

The journey to the Ashen Highlands was grueling. The once lush and vibrant terrain gradually gave way to barren, rocky cliffs and swirling ash clouds that blotted out the sun. The air was thick and dry, carrying the faint scent of sulfur. Ethan, Mia, Silver, and their newly tamed companion, a bear-like creature they had named Bramble, trudged forward, their determination unwavering despite the oppressive environment.

“This place is a nightmare,” Mia said, shielding her eyes as a gust of ash-laden wind swept past. “Are we sure the fragment is here?”

Ethan glanced at the artifact around his neck. Its glow had intensified as they neared the Highlands, pulsating in a steady rhythm.

“It’s here,” he said, his voice resolute. “We just need to find it.”

Bramble let out a low growl, his massive frame moving with surprising grace over the uneven terrain. Silver trotted ahead, his sharp senses on high alert. The group pressed on, their eyes scanning the horizon for any sign of danger.

As they climbed higher into the Highlands, the landscape grew more treacherous. Jagged rocks jutted out at odd angles, and narrow paths wound precariously along steep cliffs. The group moved carefully, each step deliberate.

“Look,” Mia said, pointing ahead.

Ethan followed her gaze and saw a large stone archway embedded in the mountainside. Strange symbols were etched into the stone, glowing faintly with an otherworldly light. The artifact’s glow responded, pulsing faster as they approached.

“That’s it,” Ethan said. “The fragment’s inside.”

Mia frowned. “Then why does this feel like a trap?”

Before Ethan could answer, a low rumble echoed through the air. The ground beneath them trembled, and a figure emerged from the shadows of the archway. It was a massive, reptilian creature, its scales shimmering like molten rock. Its eyes glowed with a fiery intensity, and smoke curled from its nostrils.

“An Ash Drake,” Mia whispered, her voice tinged with awe and fear. “These things are supposed to be extinct.”

The Ash Drake let out a deafening roar, spreading its wings as it charged toward them.

Ethan’s instincts kicked in. “Silver, Bramble, let’s go!”

Silver darted forward, his agility allowing him to dodge the Drake’s fiery breath. Bramble followed, using his massive strength to block the creature’s path and protect Ethan and Mia. The battle was chaotic, the air filled with the sounds of clashing claws and roaring flames.

“Mia, any ideas?” Ethan called, dodging a swipe from the Drake’s tail.

Mia’s eyes darted across the battlefield, analyzing the situation. “The symbols on the archway! They’re reacting to the artifact. If we can activate them, it might weaken the Drake.”

Ethan nodded, his mind racing. “Keep it busy. I’ll handle the archway.”

He sprinted toward the stone structure, the artifact glowing brighter with each step. The symbols seemed to come alive, their light pulsating in sync with the artifact. Ethan placed his hand on the archway, and a surge of energy coursed through him.

The ground shook as the symbols erupted in a blinding light. The Ash Drake roared in pain, its movements becoming sluggish. Silver and Bramble seized the opportunity, launching a coordinated attack that forced the creature to the ground.

Ethan turned back, his heart pounding. “It’s now or never!”

With a final roar, the Ash Drake collapsed, its body dissolving into embers. In its place, a glowing shard floated in the air, radiating a powerful energy.

Ethan approached the shard cautiously, the artifact guiding him. As he reached out, the shard merged with the artifact, its light intensifying before settling into a steady glow. The air around them grew still, the oppressive heat of the Highlands easing slightly.

“We did it,” Ethan said, his voice filled with relief.

Mia joined him, a weary smile on her face. “Two down, but how many more to go?”

Ethan shrugged, his determination undeterred. “As many as it takes.”

Silver barked in agreement, and Bramble let out a contented rumble. The group began their descent from the Highlands, the artifact’s glow lighting their path. The journey ahead was uncertain, but with each fragment, they grew stronger and closer to uncovering the truth behind the artifact and the growing corruption.

As they reached the base of the Highlands, a figure watched from the shadows, their presence concealed by the swirling ash. Their eyes gleamed with a sinister light, and a cold smile spread across their face.

“So, the boy has claimed another fragment,” the figure murmured. “Let’s see how long he can hold onto it.”
