He stopped abruptly, and as he looked out the window, his excitement dropped sharply. He was curious about the weather outside. In Texas, it was still late August, just before school started, so it was undoubtedly extremely hot.But was there any rain?Cloudy?Windy? If he still had access to the internet, he would look it up online. He knew in the back of his mind that he could just open the blinds and look out the window for a few seconds to get the basic idea, but doing so would let all that awful natural light into the apartment. The thought made him tremble. He could tell that it was daylight and probably not more than a little cloudy because there was already enough sunlight coming through. He decided that would suffice until he reached the outside. He could return to his vehicle after a short walk to his car, even in bad weather. He could always go back inside and wait for a while longer if that wasn't enough.

He should be able to access the internet!

He paused as a result of the entire circumstance, and the uneasy sense that something was seriously wrong began to return to him.He was unable to completely forget it, no matter how much effort he put into trying to ignore it.He wanted to do something he hadn't done in a very, very long time because it was enough:Observe the news.

"The media."Who really had benefited from the news?He had generally thought that only sadists, perverts, and weirdos would be interested in the news;essentially, the kind of people who are most likely to be misrepresented in a news story.Politicians, naturally. They would need to be the kind of person who is so interested in themselves that they will follow their own media trail.

He would occasionally experience an event that prompted him to question this philosophy.Like the summer in Paris when so many cars caught fire, or whatever. He was still unsure of what had transpired. He didn't know about it until he was taking a class that summer. If not, who knows? He often wondered if he would have been aware of 9/11 if he hadn't been in school.

He thought to himself, "Oh God," and his face turned red with horror. "What if there was another 9/11?"This time worse one?He developed a sickening feJakeng within himself:Similar to his StoLucash, a feJakeng had vanished into an endless abyss. There is nothing worse than 9/11.What would happen if a war broke out?

He glanced at his computer, which was idle and quiet. He now really wished he didn't have the internet!God, what if an atomic bomb exploded, transforming everything outside into radiation?

He had a million different ideas racing through his head, but he took a deep breath, shook his head, and with sheer willpower stopped the flow of horror and relaxed. He would have heard the explosion if there had been a bomb.If something like that had occurred, he would already know. There ought to have been some hint.Even without Legends of Lorindia, the online game he played the majority of his time in, and the internet with its weather and news updates, he wasn't that isolated from society.

He grimly realized that the only issue was, ironically, that he needed to get outside more. Most likely, all of this worrying was just the result of feeding an agoraphobic tendency to never go outside. However, he lacked agoraphobia. He never experienced panic attacks. He had no qualms whatsoever about public and open spaces. He just didn't care much for other people. He didn't dislike people in general; he just wasn't good at talking to people face to face, so he tried to stay out of those kinds of situations.

He took a deep breath, opened the door, and stepped outside because, in the end, he was aware that he would have to be honest and get on with it.

He immediately stopped.

His neighbor from the apartment across the hall was just standing there, barely moving, in the hallway. She was an older woman, probably in her late twenties, who appeared to live alone with a dog and made creepy comments whenever she passed him in the hallway.

Most people probably wouldn't find her creepy. That probably belonged more to him than to her.

He contemplated the possibility that if he waited long enough, she might simply go back into her apartment without even noticing him as he stood there for a brief moment silently pondering whether or not he should say anything.

He said, racking his brains as he tried to recall her name, "Hey... uh..."Suzy?Susan?Ann?Evelyn?Peter?Wait, Peter?Where did that originate? It was obvious that she was not Peter. However, you are no longer aware.Sometimes people did crazy things.Hey neighbor,” he settled on, "What's-" He stopped there, choking on the words that came after. When she turned to look at him, it occurred to her that no words were appropriate.

Her eyes appeared to be bulging out of her skull, ready to fall to the ground, as her face was drawn and gaunt. Her otherwise chubby features were given an odd appearance due to her sunken cheeks. One side of her lower lip appeared to have been torn off, exposing some of her teeth. Her left ear, on the other hand, was the most horrifying, appearing to have been infected and disgustingly infected after being left untreated for several days.

She launched herself at him with a sudden spring of movement and let out a strange guttural growl that almost sounded like a moan.Jake jumped back in horror and tried to shut the door on her, but she moved faster than he did.Her head and upper shoulders barely made it past the closing door as she squeezed in part of the room. She carried on pushing. He fought back, but he almost didn't push hard enough because he didn't want to crush her.

"Are you insane?"He called out while observing her as she repeatedly bobbed her head in his direction in an effort to squeeze more through the narrow opening. He came to the realization that she was actually attempting to bite him when her jaw kept opening and closing. What motivated her to bite him?I'll call the authorities! He warned, but she didn't seem to be bothered at all by the threat.

He thought about trying to push her head back outside, but something in the back of his mind was telling him not to let her bite him. It wasn't just the desire to avoid being bitten by a random person; something else was telling him not to let her bite him.He realized that his effort was pretty much pointless as she slid further and further into the room as the seconds passed.Despite how strong she appeared, her strength somehow exceeded his own.

He quickly backpedaled, bracing himself, and let the door fly open. Not anticipating the sudden release of pressure, his neighbor collapsed to the ground.Oh god!”He exclaimed, taking a small step forward and slightly raising his hands to resist the urge to assist her in rising.I apologize. Are you alright?”

Are you alright?Really?Did he truly care about whether he had inadvertently hurt this crazy person? What's the matter with me?he pondered internally.

It did not appear that Sally, Suzy, or whoever her name was was even aware. Her menacing bulging eyes were fixed on him as she quickly got back to her feet. She lunged at him once more before fully rising, but she fell back to the ground, almost a full foot from her target, without properly bDaniel ceding. She didn't let this stop her.Jake's leg was grabbed by one of the arms with inhuman strength as they swung out.She appeared to be attempting to extend her other arm as well, but it was entrapped beneath her and she was simply unable to comprehend the idea of first getting up to free it.

She had terrible strength in her limbs despite her absurd situation.Jake could only watch in awe as his leg was pulled ever closer to the woman's mouth, no matter how hard he tried to get away. Her desire to gnaw on him was now abundantly clear, and that mouth opened and closed wild. She finally succeeded, her strength triumphing, and she sunk her teeth, albeit in vain, into the rubber sole of his shoe.

Jake's thoughts raced. He could not even comprehend what was taking place because it was so far beyond his comprehension. He stopped trying to think and became just a responder. His eyes were frantically searching for the means of his salvation as he turned his head left and right. His right arm reached out, grabbed an empty jar that was on a nearby table, and brought it down on his neighbor's cheek without thinking.Jake was relieved of his shock when the horrible sound of bones breaking through the air made him suddenly fully aware of what he had done.

This should have been resolved definitively with that blow. The jaw of Suzanne or whoever it was should have been useless, and she should have been unconscious or screaming in pain while rolling around on the floor. Most appallingly, this was far from the truth. She continued to gnash and bite in an effort to get through his shoe, but she didn't seem to notice the attack.

Jake screamed, not out of fear but out of an animalistic rage at the insaneness of the situation and the neighbor, then raised the jar once more and slammed it directly into the woman's head once more.He was not discouraged, even though there was no effect once more.He did this once more, then again, and again.Jake heard the sickening sound of bones breaking under the assault each time, like a hurricane roar, but his attacker didn't seem to notice as she continued to eat his shoe. Therefore, he continued to beat her, striking her repeatedly, until he realized that she had stopped gnawing after a few hits and that her head was merely a disgusting, bloody pulp.

After some time, Daniel asked, with a look of complete ignominy on his face, "You mean to tell us that you’re keeping us alive only so that you can put us in pens with other humans?"As slaves? As what?“Slaves?”The creature's eyebrows raised in surprise as it echoed. No way, God.Why on earth would we require your assistance?Once more, silence as this most recent revelation was taken in.What do you mean, we won't have to do anything but eat, screw, and be slaughtered for lunch?"Ah, yes.Except for the slaughter, of course. He paused and waved his hand in the air as he searched for the right word, "...fresh." "We like our meat..." he said.Despite Daniel's wide eyes, he did not appear to be afraid or even disgusted; rather, he appeared simply irate. He made a sudden lurch forward and strained and pulled at his bindings, but they refused to move even an inch, and all he got out of it was exhaustion. He was worn out and slumped back against the chair, his rage still visible on his features.

There were explosions of light and pain, dismal but blinding flashes of color in what seemed like an eternity of blackness. Everything seemed to be spinning, even though it seemed as if there was nothing there to be spinning. It was sickening, and it made him want to vomit, but he could not be sure for even a split second that he actually had a stomach with contents to lose. Then suddenly the spinning stopped, the flashes stopped, everything stopped. It seemed like another lifetime came and went, and a dull ache began to settle inside his head and amhum one long, unbroken note without end. Slowly, he began to grow aware that he could open his eyes. This he managed, but not without great effort. Even once he had done it, all that could be seen was a blur, a shapeless void of colors and light that did not seem to make any sense. With a fortitude that would shame even Hercules, he managed to blink a few times, and in doing so cleared away some of the blurriness. When formless blobs final

Moving along his hands and knees, he was surprised to find the table a lot steadier than he had expected. Most likely this was the benefit of going in the middle, when there was someone holding each of the four corners. Even still, the gap between the buildings seemed like an endless one as he crawled inch by inch across the table top. He tried to not look anywhere but at the board beneath him, but no matter what he tried, out of the very corners of his eyes he could see the alleyway below. It was filled shoulder to shoulder with zombies. Their inhuman groans and the rancid stench of their decay filled the air around him, threatening to overwhelm him and knock him from his perch. Then suddenly the far roof came into view, and Jake leaped the remaining distance and crashed down gratefully onto the unyielding rooftop. He rolled a few feet and then came to a stop on his back. He wanted to just lie there forever, never moving again, but as Richard was already making his way down the table

Without another word they changed direction and headed for the station. The front doors were unlocked, and so they burst through them, slamming them shut behind them.“The desks!” Richard said, indicating the nearest two work stations.Devin and Jake grabbed either side of one, while Daniel and Matthew did the same to the other, and they moved the desks in front of the doors. Richard was hunting for the keys before they even finished. Near the back door on the wall was a plaque covered in key rings. Richard frantically looked over the labels above each ring.“This must be it!” he called to the others. They hurried over as Richard pulled down three keys. He kept one and tossed the others to Daniel and Jake. “Probably gonna need to take three cars, since we don’t want anybody locked into the back.”“Hey, check this out!”They all turned to see Devin pulling open a door and reaching inside a room. He pulled out a shot gun, and held it up in the air triumphantly. “Weaponry,” he said, smil

Both men had never seen anything like it before. The organized readiness of an approaching army was completely different from this.Even more so, it was not the chaotic wave of a protest march. The undead were stumbling and collapsing, only to be overrun by the next uncaring zombie in line, making it more like a river that boiled and boiled with the tide.Side streets were filled with vast undead tributaries that somehow made their way into the main current without halting it in any way.Overall, they were still the stumbling, slow-moving wrecks they were accustomed to seeing, but the sheer number of them and the unstoppable force of their movement made them particularly horrifying to see."We are gone."Jake didn't intend to say the words. They were not representative of what he was thinking because, aside from the image of the incoming horde, his mind was completely blank. It seemed more like someone had taken control of his body and said those two words through it.It would appear that Ma

When they got to the main road, they went south. They were on their way to the base without a zombie in sight, as they had been for days.Even when driving cautiously and with a high level of alertness, 25 miles was not a lot of distance to cover in a car.In this region of the country, almost no cars were on the road. This might have been suspicious if they were going to a bigger town, but cars had never been as important here in the middle of nowhere.Tractors instead of cars would have been seen driving down the highway in this area frequently. In point of fact, they did pass one tractor that had veered off the road in the wrong direction and had its engine casing open, indicating that someone had been working on it.Everyone in the car tightened their muscles and prepared their weapons as the first houses and small businesses crawled past the windows. The passing world was being watched intently, waiting for any movement to appear.Every storefront was dark, and every vehicle was either s
