The darkness of the tunnels offered little comfort, only a suffocating shroud that clung to Vaelric’s skin like wet wool. Every footfall felt heavy, laden with the metallic scent of his own drained vitality. Mira kept her hand clamped firmly on his bicep, her grip an anchor against the erratic, hungry pulsing of the crown.

They reached the safehouse, a discarded supply closet deep within the lower levels of the Academy, before the sound of the guards’ heavy boots faded into the distance. Vaelric collapsed onto a crate, his chest heaving, the violet light still dancing at the periphery of his vision.

"You pushed it too far," Mira breathed, her face pale in the flickering candlelight. "You could have killed us both in that ring, Vaelric."

Vaelric wiped a smear of blood from his lip, his eyes snapping to hers. "I didn't have a choice. He was going to crush my skull. Did you see his eyes, Mira? He wanted to turn me into ash."

"I know," she whispered, stepping closer to tuck a loose strand of hair behind his ear. Her hand trembled as it touched his skin. "I’m just terrified of what happens when you win. What happens to you when the crown decides it’s had enough of you fighting it?"

"I don't know," Vaelric admitted, leaning his forehead against hers. "But I’m not done yet. We have a goal, right? The banquet. That’s how we get closer to the sanctum."

As if summoned by his words, a sharp, rhythmic tapping echoed from the heavy iron door of the closet. Mira pulled her dagger, her posture shifting into a lethal, defensive crouch.

"Who is it?" she hissed.

"A messenger from the High Lord," a crisp, clinical voice sounded from behind the steel. "An invitation for the victor of the day’s display. The Pale Regent requests your presence at the evening banquet."

Vaelric stood slowly, his legs shaky but steadying as the adrenaline cooled. He looked at Mira, the unspoken weight of the invitation hanging between them.

"They’re taking the bait," Vaelric said, his voice a low, gravelly rasp.

"Or they’re setting a trap," Mira replied, her eyes dark with concern. "Don't go. We can find another way."

"No," Vaelric said, his gaze hardening. "If they’re inviting me to the inner sanctum, I’m taking it. It’s the only way to see what he’s hiding. Besides, I need to see him. I need to know if he’s as untouchable as he thinks."

"Then I’m coming with you," she stated, her jaw set.

"You know you can't," he countered, stepping into her space to hold her face in his hands. "You’d be recognized immediately. I have to do this alone, Mira. But I’ll be back. I promise."

She looked up at him, her eyes glistening with a desperate, fierce devotion. "If you don't come back, I’m burning the Academy to the ground with everyone in it. Remember that."

"I know," he murmured, pressing his lips to her forehead. "Wait for me."

The banquet hall was an architectural nightmare of opulence and intimidation. Tall, slender pillars of obsidian rose to meet a vaulted ceiling that shimmered with captured starlight, while the floors were polished so highly they mirrored the faces of the terrified, sycophantic guests.

Vaelric adjusted the stiff, high-collared tunic he had scavenged. He felt like a wolf in sheep’s clothing, his skin prickling under the gaze of the elite. Everywhere he looked, he saw the same hollow ambition, the same hunger for influence that fueled the High Lord’s slaughter.

He moved through the crowd, his movements silent, a predator lurking in the garden of prey.

"You look lost, brother," a cold voice sneered.

Vaelric didn't flinch. He turned to find Lucien lounging against a marble column, a wine goblet swirling in his hand.

"I’m just taking in the view," Vaelric said, his voice smooth, masking the bile rising in his throat.

"The view is quite something, isn't it?" Lucien remarked, gesturing to the hall. "All this life, all this potential, gathered in one place to celebrate the transition. You should be honored to be among them."

"Is that what we’re calling it now? A transition?" Vaelric asked, his tone dry.

Lucien laughed, a sharp sound that lacked any warmth. "Everything is a transition, Vaelric. From birth to death, from the mortal to the ascended. You of all people should understand that. You feel the crown, don't you? It’s not a burden. It’s an evolution."

"It feels more like a shackle," Vaelric retorted.

"Only because you’re fighting the inevitable," Lucien whispered, leaning in close. "The Regent is watching, you know. He’s very interested in your performance today."

Before Vaelric could respond, the room fell into a sudden, icy silence. The massive, double-height doors at the end of the hall groaned open, and the Pale Regent entered. He was tall, his robes a cascading waterfall of shadow and starlight, his face masked by a silver filigree that made him look like a deity of the void.

Vaelric felt a sudden, sharp pressure against his temples—a psychic probe that sent a jolt of pain through his skull. He clenched his fists at his sides, forcing his expression to remain, impassive, a mask of loyalty and awe.

The Regent walked through the room, the guests parting like water around a stone. He stopped directly in front of Vaelric, his presence radiating an aura of absolute, suffocating power.

"The young mercenary," the Regent said, his voice a low, melodic vibration that seemed to bypass the ears and resonate directly in the marrow of Vaelric’s bones.

"My Lord," Vaelric said, dropping to one knee, his eyes fixed on the polished floor.

"Rise," the Regent commanded.

Vaelric stood, meeting the Regent’s gaze. The silver mask was a mirror, reflecting only the hollow, flickering violet of his own eyes.

"You possess a unique resonance," the Regent observed, his head tilting slightly to the side. "It is rare to see such raw, untamed power in one so young. And yet, there is a hesitation in you. A flicker of doubt."

"I am merely a student of the craft, my Lord," Vaelric said, his voice steady. "I have much to learn about the nature of my potential."

"Indeed," the Regent murmured, stepping into his personal space. The scent of ozone and ancient dust was overwhelming. "You have fought well today. You have proven yourself to be a weapon of significant caliber. But tell me, Valen—have you ever felt the true, desperate call of a crown?"

Vaelric felt his heart hammer against his ribs, a frantic, rhythmic beat. He kept his breathing slow, his focus singular.

"I have felt the weight," Vaelric replied, his voice barely a whisper. "I do not yet know if I have the strength to answer."

The Regent’s lips curled into a smile that never reached the cold, star-like depths of his eyes. "Strength is not found, boy. It is taken. And I suspect you have a great deal more of it than you are currently willing to admit."

The Regent turned to the room, his voice amplifying to a resonant, chilling command. "Enjoy the evening. The work of the world does not pause for celebration, but tonight, we honor those who will eventually serve the bridge."

He turned back to Vaelric, his hand hovering near his shoulder, his presence a living, breathing shadow. "Tell me, Valen. When the moment comes to choose between the life you cling to and the destiny you were forged for, which will you sacrifice?"

Vaelric looked at him, his hatred a white-hot ember, buried deep beneath the cold, logical ice of his deception. "I suppose that depends on what the sacrifice brings."

"It brings eternity," the Regent whispered, and for a moment, the world tilted, the shadows in the room lengthening to reach for Vaelric’s throat. "Do not keep me waiting long, little ghost."

The proctors didn’t move. They remained like statues of black iron, their eyes cold and unblinking beneath their helms. He didn't expect the click of boot heels against stone, but he knew the cadence before the man even stepped into the light.Lucien sauntered toward the edge of the ring, his posture relaxed, his eyes shimmering with that familiar, predatory amusement."You look like a man who’s lost his way, little brother," Lucien said, leaning against a support pillar. "Walking around the academy at this hour? You’re asking for an execution."Vaelric didn't turn around. He kept his gaze fixed on the darkened spectator benches. "Get lost, Lucien. I’m not in the mood for your games tonight.""Games? Is that what you think this is?" Lucien walked onto the

Vaelric moved through the shadows of the lower district, his pulse a frantic, uneven drumbeat against his ribs. Every shadow seemed to stretch, reaching for his ankles, the crown’s hunger now a constant, low-frequency hum that vibrated in his very teeth. He found the safehouse, a collapsed cellar beneath a derelict weaver’s shop. Mira was there, illuminated by a single, sputtering candle. She looked up as the door creaked, her hand flying to the hilt of her dagger before she recognized his silhouette."Vaelric," she breathed, her posture collapsing from predator to partner in an instant. She rushed toward him, her hands searching his face, his arms, her eyes wide with terror. "You’re bleeding. What happened? Did they find you?"Vaelric stepped inside, slamming the heavy bo

The tension in the air was thick enough to choke on, a suffocating layer of ozone and expectation that made the fine hair on Vaelric’s arms stand rigid. The Pale Regent stood before him, a silhouette carved from the very void, his presence casting a long, unnatural shadow that seemed to feed on the light of the chandeliers above."Don't go silent on me now, boy," the Regent said, his voice smooth, like silk dragged over jagged glass. "You were quite vocal during the trial of arms. Surely you have an opinion on the nature of sacrifice?"Vaelric forced his hands to remain at his sides, fingers twitching only slightly against the seams of his tunic. He could feel the crown pulsing, a low, rhythmic throb against his skull that synchronized with the Regent's steady, predatory breathing. He had to play the part. He had to be the ambitious, confused mercenary—not the vessel they were hunting."Sacrifice is just a fa
