"We're not!"

Joyce fired back with emotions and pain and anger exploding in her voice. This was her weakness. One weakness Gerald knew how to manipulate when they were together in the marriage. "You cheated! You lied! You don't get the chance to come back again and never call back again!"

"I cheated?" Gerald laughed like a hyna that saw blood and weakness. "What did you do? You have been cheating too. You couldn't trust your husband.."

"Ex-husband!" She fired.

"— Whatever. You couldn't trust me with secrets. You thought I wasn't loyal and you signed everything away. To a boy you knew nothing about, to a boy you trusted more than your own husband. Who cheated?"

"Who cheated?" Joyce let out a laughter that bounced off the wall and rattled the glass face of the wall clock. "What a convenient bastard. You said I wasn't submissive after every thing I did for you, after every of your instructions I followed like a puppet till I caught you with Jane. Yet you come back home smiling at me and making promises you already broken. I'm done being a good girl."

She continued.

"Rowan, she deserves it. He's not a person like you who stayed to ruin. I found him. I trust him.."

At the other end, Gerald's chest was burning with rage, every word mentioned about Rowan was a slap to his face.

Joyce's voice dropped, all emotions gone and reinforced with determination.

"If— if you ever touch a finger on him, I swear I'll make you regret it."

She snapped the connection.

At the other end, Gerald swung the phone across the room to hit the wall.

"Ahhh!" He roared, shaking with rage. "How dare she..." finger cracked in a tight fist. "..leave me for that kid... that trash."

"Babe.." Jane, his new woman, Joyce's friend who betrayed him left the bed to his side, holding her hand, a gesture of comfort farther than Romance. She is beautiful in a way that leaves an impression but Joyce's appearance would still make people question why he left her for this woman. "Relax, baby... she's stubborn. I know her. We both know."

Gerald pulled away from her fast. "You don't know her! She chose that boy— that kid over me!"

"You're raising your voice at me!" Jane fired back raising her voice over his.

Gerald threw her glance like he'd never expected the retaliation. He wanted to walk out but Joyce took a deep breath and held his arm again.

Not now.

She'd been planning all of this since they were in high school, since Joyce kept having everything, since she was the only one always seen in the school while everyone would dismiss her like she was never there, like just a wall that should be naturally avoided. She was the cheerleader, tagged the brightest in the school and Joyce snatched his highschool crush knowing she had feelings for him.

She still felt bitter and unseen even when Joyce immediately informed her that Jasper asked her out and she rejected it. The jealousy built into something dark. Revenge. Revenge with baseless justification of cruel action and bitterness that came from being brushed off.

She took everything from her and now she's going to take back everything at any cost it demands.

"I'm sorry..." She said voice low, all false sweetness, holding his arms to pull him back gently but firm. "..we can make this work." Her voice reinforced back now. "She has a weakness now....the kid."

Gerald was cooling off now, glancing at her with renewing interest.

" I have the same plan."

"We'll make her come out from wherever she is. The boy is the bait. We'll threaten to kill him if she doesn't transfer the papers."

Jane shook her head. She wanted Joyce to suffer. She wanted her to break, to make her feel the shame when she was overlooked by the world, to feel everything she felt when she was ghosted by everyone. She blamed Joyce for everything even when she was innocent, trusting her and taking her as the only family she had, but Jane is ready to draw her blood to have revenge— satisfying revenge on her.
