"Aaakh!"

Xiao Chen screamed in pain. But he kept running without looking back even once. The book inside the cloth bundle strapped to his back became his only motivation to keep running and running.

“Catch him, quick! Don’t let him escape!” shouted one of the bandits.

Even though blood continued to flow from the wound on his right shoulder, the brown-skinned young man refused to give up. As long as there was breath and strength left in his body, he would keep fighting to fulfill the task his mother had entrusted him—and to avenge the death of his parents.

The pursuit through the darkness didn’t end simply with Xiao Chen’s injuries. Unwittingly, they had arrived at the foot of a small hill known for being haunted. A hill that welcomed no one who dared to enter its domain.

Xiao Chen’s vision began to blur from the excessive blood loss. His eyes were spinning, and everything he saw seemed to whirl around him. The young man finally fell to his knees and slumped against a large tree trunk. The sword once embedded in his back had fallen during the run—whether from the jostling or from brushing against the trees, he didn’t know.

The blood from his wound continued to seep out, staining the bark of the tree he was leaning against.

The group of bandits stood just a few paces in front of Xiao Chen. Their eyes were sharp, as though they intended to skin him alive.

“So you’ve finally given up, boy! We’ll show you what it means to be skinned alive!” one of the bandits threatened, panting heavily.

Xiao Chen didn’t respond. His vision was completely blurred. Even his hearing had dulled. The bandit’s words sounded like nothing more than a gust of wind rushing past his ears.

“Catch him! Before he dies—we must skin him first! Let him feel the pain of crossing us—”

The man’s words were cut off suddenly. From inside the tree trunk where Xiao Chen was resting, a figure emerged—its identity unclear, as its face was hidden behind a mask.

“Wh-who is that?” one of the bandits asked, trembling.

And it wasn’t just him. All the bandits who had been chasing Xiao Chen were now filled with dread. There were many reasons to fear what they saw—chief among them, the sudden appearance of a masked figure emerging from a tree.

One of the bandits suddenly realized where they were. “I think we’ve entered the region of the Thousand Ghost hill, everyone. We need to leave now and let the spirits devour the boy.”

The other bandits were startled by his words. It was as if they hadn’t realized there was a towering hill standing right before them.

Like reaching an unspoken agreement, they began retreating—step by cautious step—until, at fifteen meters from Xiao Chen, they broke into a full sprint.

“Where do you think you’re going?” came a deep voice from behind the mask—a voice that clearly belonged to an old man.

The bandits’ rapid footsteps came to an abrupt stop when the masked figure suddenly appeared right in front of them.

“Spare us, Elder! We promise we’ll never return to this hill,” one of them begged.

The masked man let out a thunderous laugh before replying, “Only one of you will be allowed to leave this place! Your hearts are tainted, your souls rotten, and your minds filled with worldly greed. People like you don’t even deserve to be called human.”

The dozen or so bandits trembled, wondering—which one of them would be spared?

“Only that young man will leave this place alive,” the masked figure continued, as if answering the question echoing in their minds.

With that, he raised his right hand. A beam of bright green light shot from his palm toward the group of bandits—instantly destroying them all.

“You don’t need to struggle for food anymore. Come, feast on the meat I’ve prepared for you!” the masked man said as he departed, leaving the remains of the bandits scattered on the ground.

Dozens of glowing eyes emerged in the darkness and crept toward the place where the bandits had been obliterated. Judging from their form, they appeared to be a pack of forest wolves—with long snouts and sharp fangs protruding from their mouths.

Without needing any orders, the wolves devoured the fresh meat eagerly, as if celebrating a feast. Occasionally, they howled into the night, expressing their joy.

The masked man knelt down and looked at Xiao Chen for a long time. “Who are you, really?” he muttered softly.

But Xiao Chen, unconscious and bleeding out, did not respond. The amount of blood he had lost had stolen away his awareness.

The masked figure then lifted Xiao Chen’s body and disappeared swiftly into the dense forest.

Several Days Later

Xiao Chen’s consciousness slowly returned. With great effort, the young man tried to sit up. He looked around, but saw only darkness.

“Why is everything so dark? Am I… dead? If that’s true, then I must be in a grave now…”

He couldn’t hide his sorrow. He believed he had died, and that meant he had failed his mother’s final mission—to deliver the Book of the Sky Sovereign to the old hermit on Mount Huashan.

“Forgive me, Mother… I couldn’t carry out the duty you entrusted to me. I’ve failed to avenge your and Father’s deaths. Now I’m dead, and soon I’ll join you both…”

“Dead, my foot! You’re still alive, you weak little boy! Can’t you appreciate all the effort I spent healing you?”

Xiao Chen recoiled in shock at the disembodied voice. “Who are you? Show yourself! I’m not afraid of ghosts!”

“Call me a ghost one more time and I’ll feed you to my pet wolves!”

Suddenly, the masked figure stepped out from the darkness. The pitch-black room lit up as the sound of a massive stone being moved echoed through the chamber—sunlight then streamed in, illuminating the space.

Xiao Chen gasped in awe. The place he had thought to be a grave was actually a cave. Even more astonishing, the cave’s entrance was sealed by a massive rock that could slide aside so easily.

  • The Surprise

Before long, Song Wei and Xiu Lung emerged through the sect’s gate. Both of them laughed loudly, full of triumph, imagining that the man who had ruined Grand Minister Yao Li’s plan would soon die a miserable death. A few seconds later, another old man—with long white eyebrows and white hair tied up in a topknot—followed them out and stood beside Xiu Lung. "These are the two who dared to challenge our sect, Sect Leader," Xiu Lung said, trying to incite the old man beside him. Hearing Xiu Lung’s dishonest words, Xiao Chen’s mind began to work. He suspected that the leader of the Eternal Sword Sect had no idea about Song Wei and Xiu Lung’s role in supporting Grand Minister Yao Li’s coup against Emperor Cheng Ho. "That’s rich coming from you!" Xiao Ji snapped angrily. "Wasn’t it you two who challenged my friend to come to the foot of Mount Kahuripan?" "Don’t lie!" Song Wei shouted, putting on a fake look of conviction. "We are

  • The Eternal Sword Sect

Xiao Chen smiled faintly as he heard the man’s words. "I’ll say this one last time," he said, spinning the twig in his hand a little faster. "Where are those two cowardly old men? My business is only with them—not with the entire Eternal Sword Sect." "Just admit you’re afraid to face all of us!" the yellow-skinned man taunted. "The word ‘fear’ doesn’t exist in my dictionary! Don’t regret it when your lives are lost for the sake of those two cowards!" After responding to the taunt, Xiao Chen quickly attacked one of the four men, thrusting the end of his twig toward the man’s head. But he was forced to pull back and jump several steps backward as two other attacks threatened his ribs and stomach. "Annoying, but weak attacks like these won’t hurt me!" the handsome young man muttered before increasing his speed. He launched another series of faster, continuous attacks at the two closest enemies. The two men targeted

  • The Battle Begins

For quite some time, the two of them sat silently on their horses, scanning the area—but there was not a single sign of the two old warriors anywhere. "Do you think they’re avoiding the main road?" Xiao Chen asked. "It’s possible," Xiao Ji replied. "From what Uncle Sutejo said last night, the Eternal Sword Sect is supposed to be on the right side of the main road—but I don’t see any footpath at all." Xiao Chen leaped off his horse and walked forward, his eyes fixed on the right side of the road, searching for tracks or any evidence that their enemies were nearby. But he found nothing—nothing to satisfy his curiosity. "Did you find anything?" Xiao Ji asked, still sitting on his horse. Xiao Chen shook his head slowly. "Could they have another path?" "You mean a different footpath?" Xiao Ji asked again. "Yeah. Did you see any footpath leading to the right before we got here?" Xiao Ji turned aroun

  • Arrival at the Foot of Mount Kahuripan

Grand Minister Yao Li also broke into a wide grin. The foot of Mount Kahuripan was where the Eternal Sword Sect was based—and if the warrior who had killed his personal guards dared to show up there, it would be like handing over his own life. Song Wei and Xiu Lung would surely deploy nearly two hundred sect members to gang up on him. "In that case, we shall take our leave, My Lord," Xiu Lung said. "We have a surprise prepared for that cursed warrior!" "Go, Masters," Yao Li replied. "Make sure that scum dies tomorrow. Bring me his head, and I will reward each of you with a pouch of gold coins." Song Wei and Xiu Lung bowed respectfully before exiting. Their minds were already filled with visions of the fifty gold coins each that would soon be in their hands. Meanwhile, in the palace, Emperor Cheng Ho and Grand Minister Tian Long were still waiting for word from the soldiers about the explosion they had heard. Both men were growing impatient, ea

  • The Delayed Duel

The old man growled in fury. He had never imagined that the young warrior’s initial attack had been nothing but a trick. Decades spent in the martial arts world—filled with bloodshed and lost lives—had amounted to nothing in the face of this boy. A moment later, Song Wei coughed softly, and fresh blood spurted from his lips. "Heh heh heh," Xiao Chen chuckled, his voice laced with mockery. "I thought the two of you were stronger than the men I killed last night. But it turns out your skills are no more than this." Song Wei felt as if he had been struck by lightning at the young man’s taunt. "You bastard!" he roared. Watching his comrade be humbled in just a few moves was almost unbearable for Xiu Lung. He rushed over to Song Wei, ready to help his friend fight back against Xiao Chen. "Are you alright?" Xiu Lung asked, his eyes scanning Song Wei for injuries. "I’m fine—just a minor wound," Song Wei replied, his gaze fixe

  • The Battle

Xiao Chen’s eyes narrowed as he realized he had been lured into a trap. Yet not a single trace of fear touched his mind—in fact, a wide grin spread across his face, as if he were throwing down a challenge to the dozens of men standing before him. Moments later, around fifty more uniformed soldiers emerged from the darkness of the night, joining the group that was already gathered. All of them stared daggers at the young man who seemed to possess not an ounce of fear. "You have made a terrible mistake," Xiao Chen declared, his voice ringing clear and steady. "Tonight, you have all thrown away your lives for the sake of supporting a traitor!" "Enough talk! Attack him!" one of the men shouted, giving the order. The combined force of roughly eighty soldiers and martial artists charged forward, attacking Xiao Chen with brutal ferocity. All of them shared the same ambition: to claim the huge reward Grand Minister Yao Li had promi
