Chapter 11- Voice
The red light spread across the floor like blood poured into water.I stared at the veins as they crawled toward the throne, and then toward me. The silver glow in the walls was gone, and the whole chamber was now bathed in a deep and ugly crimson. The air became heavy, and it smelled like iron."What's happening?" I shouted. "King! What did you want to tell me? The Silver does not only eat, it also what?"The king didn't answer me. The silver eye in the cocoon was looking at the floor, and for the first time I saw fear in it."It heard us..." he whispered. "It was never asleep. I should have known that it would wake up the moment you touched the thread.""What woke up?""The Silver! It also..." The king's voice broke into a hundred pieces again, and the voices overlapped each other like a choir that had lost its song. "...it also lies."The red veins reached the foot of the stairs. I stepped back toward the throne without thinking, because I had nowhere else to go. Behind the closed
Chapter 10- Sound
I didn't move for a long time. The breath came again, slow and heavy, and this time I felt it on my face. It wasn't warm like a living man's breath. It was cold, like wind coming out of a grave. Every part of me wanted to turn around and run back down the stairs, but where would I run to? Behind me was a hall full of ghosts, and behind that was a forest full of spiders."If it wanted to kill me, it would have done it already," I whispered to myself.I stepped into the chamber. The floor was made of the same black glass as the hall, but here the silver veins crawled across it like roots. They all went in the same direction. They climbed the steps of the throne, and they ended in the cocoon of silver threads. It was like the whole castle was feeding it. Or maybe the cocoon was feeding the castle. I couldn't tell which.I walked closer, one careful step at a time. The ring on my finger had started to hum again, and the mark on my hand was glowing so brightly that I had to squint. The nea
Chapter 9- Statue
The courtyard behind the black iron doors was too clean. There was no dust on the white tiles, no cracks in the walls, and not a single remnant standing in the corners. After everything I had seen in this city, it felt wrong to see something that wasn't broken.I walked slowly across the tiles, and my boots made a soft echo. The sound followed me everywhere, as if someone was walking a few steps behind me."It's just an echo..." I said to myself, though my voice didn't sound very sure. The iron ring on my finger was humming now. It was a low and steady hum, like a cat purring in the middle of the night. The silver mark on the back of my hand answered it with a faint pulse. Was the ring talking to the mark? Or was the castle talking to both of them? I didn't know, and I didn't like not knowing.I passed through the archway in the center of the courtyard and stepped into the castle. The hall inside was so big that I stopped walking for a moment. The ceiling was so high that I could bare
Chapter 8- Ruined Castle of Light
The causeway to the Castle of Light was a broken spine of stone. It stretched across a dry chasm that dropped into black nothingness. The slabs were cracked and uneven. Some had already slipped into the dark. I stepped carefully. The stone groaned under my boots but held. The castle sat at the end of the bridge. Up close, it was not made of light. It was white marble, polished smooth, but the surface was veined with silver. The veins pulsed slowly, like a heartbeat. The outer gate was shut. Two massive doors of black iron stood without handles. Above them, a carved crest showed a crown split down the middle.I walked past the statues lining the bridge. They were knights in full plate, frozen mid-stride. Their armor was fused with the stone. Cracks ran through their visors. Dust spilled from the joints. I did not touch them. I kept my eyes on the path. The silver mark on my hand stayed cold. It did not react. Not yet.Halfway across, the wind died. The remnants that usually lingered i
Chapter 7- Shattered Descent
The world tilted. That was the first thing I felt not the sound, but the sudden, sickening shift in my stomach as the stone floor beneath my boots just… gave up. The landing, that small slice of obsidian I thought was solid, groaned like a dying beast and snapped away from the tower wall."No!" I lunged forward, my fingers clawing at the frost-covered glass of the stairs above.I missed. My hands slapped against the cold, slick surface, and for a heartbeat, I was weightless. The air rushed past my ears, cold and sharp as a knife. Below me was an abyss of black shadows and the white, screaming faces of the remnants trapped in the walls.Clang! My chest slammed into a lower landing, knocking every bit of air out of my lungs. I rolled, my fingers catching the jagged edge of the stone. I hung there, swinging over the dark, my boots kicking at nothing but empty air. My ribs felt like they been kicked by a horse, and the silver mark on my hand was screaming, a white-hot needle of pain that
Chapter 6- Southern Needle
The sun... if there even was a sun in this forsaken place didn't move. The sky stayed that same bruised, flat gray, making it impossible to tell if I’d been walking for hours or days. My legs ached with a deep, throbbing heat, but the rest of me felt cold.I was lost.I’d thought I was making progress, but Aldenora was a lie. I’d been walking through streets for miles, but all I saw was the same repetitive rot. Row after row of houses that must have belonged to the common folk. They were cramped, leaning against each other like tired old men, their roofs caved in and their windows staring at me like empty eye sockets. There were no grand palaces here. No golden gardens or ivory halls. Just a sea of shattered stone and gray dust that went on forever. If this was a kingdom of Gods, then the Gods lived in slums just like the rest of us."I haven't even moved an inch, have I?" I muttered, stopping to lean against a wall. The wall groaned. A layer of plaster peeled off and turned to mist b
