Chapter 0003: Impromptu meeting

Max made his way to the conference hall and pushed the glass doors open.

Inside, save for Mirabel and Bernard, there were also other executives of Cavendish Inc. present as well as executives from Darrow Corp, all of whom regarded Max with cold eyes.

Any other person would naturally be intimidated by this, but Max had experienced this once and had no intentions of experiencing it again.

This time, they would be the ones to be intimidated.

“What’s going on here?” Max asked, feigning ignorance.

“Max, I didn’t expect you to be so despicable. We entrusted you with taking care of the Goldman inc. project, yet a month into the project and you have embezzled more than ten million dollars. How greedy can you get?” Mirabel was the first to speak, her words filled with reproach.

Max raised a brow. “Sorry what?”

Bernard snorted derisively. “Drop the act and stop trying to act like you don't know what we are talking about !... Tell the truth so we can get this over with!”

“But I don't know what you are talking about.” Max insisted.

“Oh really?” Mirabel snorted. “So explain why I checked our accounts this morning only to find several invoices detailing how you transferred more than ten million into an offshore account?... How can you be so heartless?... What have I not not done for you to wish for this company to suffer such heavy losses and go bankrupt?... I can’t believe that you’d be so greedy!”

Capitalizing on Max’s silence, Bernard decided to land a final blow as he remarked sternly. “Max, I’m telling you, if you don’t return the money you’ve stolen, then don’t blame me for taking legal action against you!... I won’t stand by and watch you commit such a horrible crime.”

“Can you stop making so much noise?... I didn’t take any money!... What proof do you have that I stole such an amount?... I’m not even in charge of the finance department, so how would I be able to access the company funds, and even if I were, what reason do I have to steal from the company?” Max finally responded decidedly playing along for now.

“How could I know?... Maybe you've decided to reveal your true colors.”

“My true colors?”

“Of course!” Bernard sneered. “Why else would you continue to stick around Mirabel even while knowing that she's leagues above you. Just admit it, you decided that she had gotten too big and so want to bring her down so you guys can be on the same level.”

“That's quite the leap in argument, Mr. Darrow.” Max replied. “Can you back it up?”

Bernard snorted. “Keep acting dumb, the police will be here soon and once they take you into custody, you'll be singing like a canary.”

Just then, Mirabel spoke up. “Max, I’ll only ask you once. Why did you steal from the company?”

“Do you really believe that I would steal from the company I helped build?”

“I already asked the finance department director and he confessed to working under orders from you. So there's no point trying to act innocent. The best you can do for yourself now is own up to your crime, else, don't blame me for turning my back on you.”

“But you've already done so, Miss Cavendish.” Max calmly said. “If you hadn't, we wouldn't be here today.”

One of the executives present snidely commented. “I'm sure if he wasn't caught, that’s how this company would go bankrupt. Even if you wanted to steal, why not a hundred thousand, why must you be so greedy?”

“That's what poverty does to a person. Makes them unnecessarily greedy.” Another executive added from the side, earning a chuckle from everyone present.

Just as everyone was laughing, Max exploded. “Enough!”

The hall was immediately plunged into silence as they all stared at Max.

“Are you guys done… Can I speak now?”

“What do you want to say?” Another executive challenged.

“I'm not the one that stole from the company.”

Bernard snorted. “Like we haven't heard that already.”

Ignoring the comment, Max added. “And I have proof to back it up.”
