The Top Student

Henry finally received the acceptance letter from the academy. He got in through the recommendation of Mr. Dawson. The school would not have accepted him even if he had paid his entrance f*e. They had never seen an E rank mage before, and they would have turned him down to protect the academy’s image.

With Mr. Dawson’s recommendation, the school does not know his rank. They believe he is a top class mage from the Bloom area. Although he is, nobody truly knows it. They will think he is an E rank mage, which is exactly what Henry wants.

He does not want to expose this power until he reaches S rank level. According to the system, he can reveal his true class if he wants, but it is advisable to be at the highest level before doing so, which Henry agrees with.

He stepped out of the house and faced his family once more.

“I am leaving.”

Henry had a hard time convincing them about his power, insisting that he is just a regular E rank mage. They only believed him after he repeated the same words over and over again.

“Do your best. Do not go beyond your limit. Anything you can achieve will be appreciated.”

Henry squatted in front of Lora.

“I promise. Before one month passes, I will get your treatment money, and you will be able to walk freely.”

Lora nodded as she listened to her brother’s words. She hugged him one more time. She hoped he would become a great mage and prove everybody wrong. Henry boarded the bus to the academy.

He had already structured his plan. As soon as he reached the academy, he was going to get his mage license and join the bounty hunters to explore the outside zone. Within one month, he should have enough to cover Lora’s treatment bills.

Henry arrived at the academy. He could see the big statue of Dean Hunter, the head of the Public Guardian Association.

They oversee all the bounty hunters, and they play a major role in making sure the military abides by the needs of the public. Henry does not know who the biggest figure among them is, but he knows the military’s main task is to occupy more land, while the Public Guardians ensure the safety of the people inside the walls.

Henry entered the academy, and the microphone sounded.

“All students should gather at the assembly hall. The principal is making an announcement about the new rules to welcome the new set of mages.”

Henry felt excited hearing those words. He brought out his phone and located the school assembly hall using the school map. By the time he arrived, the meeting had already begun. It seemed there was no time to waste anyway.

The principal, Mr. Liam, was beaming as he watched the students troop into the hall. This year’s mages were promising. Even the local Cherry City had a good record this time.

It was all thanks to Dean Hunter for sending his son to attend Cherry City Academy. Because of that, many top families and investors followed. This was a strategy to boost people’s confidence in the protection wall, since many were afraid of staying in Cherry City due to its proximity to the wall.

“Good day, promising heroes and heroines of Blue Terrain. Today marks the beginning of another year at this long standing mage academy. Everyone is here to sharpen their abilities and skills, and we are here to help you achieve your dream of becoming useful to society.”

Everyone clapped at Mr. Liam’s words, and he continued explaining the principles and roadmap of the academy. While others were bored, Henry was full of energy. There were so many things to do in the academy. However, he was waiting for one particular thing.

“One of the rules has been changed. Students will not be given a mage license until they reach Year Two in the academy. This was done to ensure the safety of mages and improve the quality of younger mages. The rest of the rules remain the same. Now, I will welcome the top class talent of last year.”

Henry’s heart froze when he heard the principal’s words. He could not believe they had canceled the issuance of licenses in Year One. That was the only way for him to earn money for Lora’s treatment. How was he going to get the money now?

Bitterness filled Henry. He wanted to see his sister walk before her upcoming birthday, but that would not happen anymore. Until he reached Year Two, Lora would still remain in her wheelchair.

Henry clenched his fists tighter. He would have to apologize to Lora after this gathering and beg her to wait until next year. He raised his gaze as the principal continued speaking.

“To those who have brought honor to the academy and themselves, I welcome you. The top student of Cherry City Academy, Selena James.”

Everyone clapped as she approached the stage. Henry watched her step forward with wide eyes.

He could not believe the principal’s words. He recognized her immediately, but she looked even more beautiful now, and she was wearing a Year Three uniform. He could not believe she was from Cherry City Academy.

Selena accepted the principal’s handshake and that of the head of the Lane family.

“Selena, all by herself, took down a D rank monster that was one step away from entering its ultimate form.”

Henry’s jaw dropped. He could not believe this girl had taken credit for his achievement. He wished he could step forward and expose her, but that would mean revealing himself. He also feared she might recognize him, even though the system had wiped their memories of him.

Murmurs immediately spread through the hall.

“That is incredible. A B rank mage does not stand a chance against a D rank monster at that level. She must be extremely talented.”

“She is remarkable.”

Henry grew even more annoyed hearing their praises for someone who had wanted to abandon a captive.

Mr. Liam cleared his throat to silence the hall. When everyone became quiet, he gestured toward Selena.

“Selena here has been invited to join the White Eagles. Her outstanding performance did not go unnoticed.”

Everyone was shocked by the principal’s announcement. They burst into loud applause. The White Eagles are the best bounty hunters in the Blue Terrain. They do not accept just anyone, let alone send invitations. Selena must be exceptionally talented to receive such an offer.

Mr. Liam handed the microphone to Selena.

“Please address these newcomers.”

Selena wanted to decline, but voices from the crowd began to rise.

“Please, Lady Selena, address us.”

“We love you, Lady Selena.”

“We want to be like you.”

She had no choice but to accept the microphone. She faced the crowd and smiled.

“Mr. Liam is correct. I have been invited by the White Eagles, and I will accept the invitation. It is not about being in a top academy like Silverstone or Ocean Berry. It is about your skills and how you sharpen them.”

Henry frowned even more as he listened to her. She would do better in the movie industry than as a mage.

“Even the lowest rank, which is C rank, can become a great mage if he or she gives everything they have. I have many C rank friends, and they are…”

“Lady Selena.”

A girl from the crowd interrupted her. Henry turned back because the girl was standing behind him. Everyone turned to face her. She had better say something meaningful.

“How can I help you?”

The girl pointed directly at Henry and said,

“This guy’s class is E rank.”
