CHAPTER 5 — The Choice Hall

Thud... thud... crackle... hiss...

Echoes of Li Wei’s footsteps danced through the expansive golden hall. With each measured step, his shadow lengthened behind him, a silent companion in darkness. Screens sprawled across the walls, a dazzling duo of luminous pillars, illuminating the space. The air hummed softly, enveloping the hall in a melody both sacred and surreal.

Each towering screen loomed nearly fifteen feet high, displaying a ballet of glowing character cards. They twirled gracefully, as if infused with a spirit of their own. Fwhmmm... buzz... beep... Some depicted warriors wielding swords as long as their bodies; others showcased hunters drawing bows, arrows shimmering with silver light. Mages brandished staves, assassins shrouded in shadow, and knights gleamed in armor, reflecting the hall’s golden glow.

Li Wei paused, tilting his head back to absorb the spectacle. His breath crested slowly. Hmm... ahh...

“The Choice Hall,” he murmured, captivated.

Once, this place had felt foreign. In another life, his heart raced like a wild stallion, barely allowing him to breathe. Terrified and uncertain, his trembling hands had wrestled with the screens. Hours slipped away as he grappled with choices before settling on the Warrior class — not from desire, but a desperate need to protect his sister, Li Xue.

A heavy sigh escaped him. Tsk... hmm...

That choice had cost him dearly.

The warrior's path was not for the faint-hearted — it boasted strength, bravery, and steadfastness. Yet for someone like him, craving speed, agility, and sharp instincts, it had been a burdensome road.

Now, however, clarity reigned.

Li Wei clenched his fists, eyes darting across the radiant cards. His footsteps whispered as he traversed the hall's center, light igniting his features. Thud... thud... thud...

“No more fear,” he vowed softly. “No more wasting time.”

His voice, quiet yet resolute, brimmed with newfound determination.

Freed from Li Xue’s shadow, he could finally fight on his terms. He could move as his instincts urged — fast, free, and unbound.

Taking a deep breath, he raised his hand.

One card captured his attention: a figure stood shrouded in darkness, twin daggers dancing between his fingers, hood pulled low. The class name glowed softly: ASSASSIN.

“This time... I’ll walk alone,” Li Wei whispered.

He tapped the card.

Beep! Boom!

Light erupted from the screen, flooding the hall. Crackle... hiss... fwoosh...

Data streaked through the air like vibrant lightning. Symbols spiraled, disintegrating and swirling around him before merging with his essence. Energy lifted his hair, electrifying the atmosphere.

Then the system’s voice sliced through the hum — clear, calm, and cold.

[Warning: Unknown Divine Artifact Detected.]

[The Eye of Judgment has been successfully bound.]

Thud... crack... fzzzz...

Li Wei froze, breath snagged in his throat.

“The... Eye of Judgment?” he spoke slowly, his eyes narrowing.

That artifact — that enigmatic, cursed relic from his past life. He had lost it before shadows swallowed everything — before death itself claimed him.

And now it had returned.

[Activation Complete.]

[Passive Authority Detected.]

His pupils trembled. Hmph... ahh... huh...

He stared, spellbound by the glowing message. The same Eye of Judgment had followed him through death, recognizing him as its rightful master.

Li Wei’s mind whipped through memories. He recalled the moment of its theft in his past life — the struggles he faced trying to reclaim it. No one had ever wielded its potential. Back then, its significance had eluded him.

Now, clarity dawned.

“So even if it’s stolen,” he mused, a faint smirk tugging at his lips, “it’s always been mine.”

Exhaling, he felt a strange calm settle within him.

“Maybe... this is why I returned.”

Hmmm... crackle... hiss...

Light began to shift, reflections rippling like disturbed black water. The screens dimmed; the air chilled.

Something stirred.

From beneath him, a shadow coiled upwards. At first, it seemed like smoke, but it was denser — alive with intent. It wound around his legs, creeping up like a living entity.

Whoosh... hiss... crack...

The darkness enveloped him, synchronizing with his breath. His skin tingled, heart racing. Thud... thud... thud...

He gritted his teeth as shadows reached his chest. Ahhh... hmm... pfft...

“What... what is this power?” he uttered, voice trembling.

The system remained silent; only the hall’s low hum filled the void.

The last tendril of shadow climbed to his neck, twisting like a serpent before melding into his skin. The light flickered one final time.
