The clinic smelled of acrid herbs and stagnant blood. Leon sat on a wooden stool, his palms wrapped in rough, stained linen, watching the door. The air inside the garrison was suffocating; it was the heavy, static silence that preceded a lightning strike.

Kael’s parting words echoed in the small, dim room. Every recruit is being questioned.

"Leon? You in here?"

The voice was thin, reedy, and frantic. Thomas poked his head inside, his face pale and blotchy from crying. He hurried over, ignoring the healer who was busy with a row of wounded soldiers further down the hall.

"Thomas? What are you doing here? You should be in the barracks resting," Leon said, keeping his voice low.

"I can’t sleep, Leon. They’re everywhere. The MPs—they’re walking up and down the halls with lists. I heard them talking. They think it was an inside job by someone who knew the guard rotations for the inner keep," Thomas whispered, his hands trembling. "They’re checking everyone’s lockers. They searched Jax’s stuff ten minutes ago."

Leon looked at his own bandaged hands. "Let them search. We have nothing to hide, do we?"

"I don't! But they look at me like I’m a criminal! I’m just a kid from the farm, Leon. I don't even know how to pick a lock, let alone bypass an enchanted safe!" Thomas’s eyes darted toward the door. "Do you think they believe me?"

"If you didn't do it, you have nothing to fear. The truth has a way of surfacing," Leon said, his voice flat.

"That's easy for you to say! You're a hero now. Everyone saw you kill that bear. They wouldn't dare touch you," Thomas retorted, his voice rising. "But me? I’m just 'the recruit who fainted on the wall.' They need a scapegoat, Leon. And I’m the easiest one."

Leon stood up, his movements stiff. "Quiet down. You’re making yourself look guilty."

"I'm terrified! I have nowhere to go! You’re the only one who doesn't look at me like I’m a rat in a trap," Thomas grabbed Leon’s sleeve. "Help me, Leon. Please. You’re smart. You figured out how to kill the bear. Just tell Kael that I was with you the whole night."

Leon looked at his friend—a terrified boy who had trusted him blindly since the first day. In the back of his mind, the System chimed with a cold, relentless buzz.

"[Limit Break Quest: Commit the Sin of False Accusation. Target: Frame Thomas for the theft of the Purified Stone of Light. Penalty for failure: Spiritual regression and permanent lock of system functions.]"

"I was with you, Thomas," Leon lied, his face an immovable mask. "But they’ll ask for proof. They’ll ask where we were at four in the morning."

"We were in the barracks! You told me to sleep!" Thomas cried.

"They'll say I'm covering for you. They’ll say we worked together," Leon whispered, leaning in close. "You need to stay calm. Don't speak to the MPs until I get there. Do you understand?"

"Okay. Okay, I'll wait. I'll wait for you," Thomas sniffled, wiping his nose with his sleeve. "You won't let them take me, right?"

"Go back to the barracks. Don't leave your bunk for any reason. I have to speak to the healers about these burns," Leon said, turning away.

"Thanks, Leon. You're the best friend I've ever had," Thomas said before scurrying out into the hallway.

Leon stood alone, the weight of the moment pressing on his chest.

"[Warning: The target, Thomas, is currently being escorted by the Military Police to the isolation chamber. Time remaining until the formal interrogation begins: Fifteen minutes.]"

"He's a good kid, System," Leon whispered to the empty room. "He’s the only one who didn't look at me with suspicion when I returned."

"[A sentimental attachment is a luxury for the weak, host. Do you wish to proceed with the Sin, or would you prefer the penalty?]"

Leon looked at his palms. The burns were deep, agonizing, and raw. If he didn't unlock the next capacity, his body would never be strong enough to survive the next escalation. He thought of the burning temple, of Ares’s cold, mocking laughter, and the blade of light tearing through his chest.

"I didn't survive the first death just to die a second time for the sake of a friend who would be dead by year's end anyway," Leon muttered, his eyes hardening into flint.

He reached into the hidden lining of his tunic. His fingers brushed against the jagged, glowing fragment of the Purified Stone he had saved. It was a fragment of the very relic Kael was looking for.

He walked out of the clinic and slipped through the shadows of the barracks, moving toward the rows of bunks. He found Thomas’s locker. It was a simple, beaten-up wooden box. He reached into his pocket, retrieved the shard, and shoved it deep into the crevice between the bottom drawer and the frame. It was hidden, yet easily discovered by a trained search party.

He stepped back, his heart thumping—not with fear, but with the cold, mechanical rhythm of a predator.

"[Quest: Commit the Sin of False Accusation. Status: In Progress. Evidence planted. Prepare to witness the conclusion of the trial.]"

Leon walked out of the barracks and found a group of MPs standing by the entrance, their silver-plated pauldrons gleaming under the torchlight.

"You there! You're the one who returned with the recruit Thomas, correct?" the lead officer barked.

Leon nodded, keeping his expression pained and weary. "Yes, sir. I’m Leon."

"We're conducting a search of all living quarters. We’ve had a report of stolen property. Stay back," the officer said, brushing past him.

Leon followed them at a distance, watching through the doorway as they tore through Thomas’s meager belongings.

"Hey! Look at this!" an MP shouted, reaching into the gap Leon had prepared.

He pulled out the shard. It glowed with a faint, dying ember of light, unmistakable to anyone who had seen the stone before.

"The Purified Stone fragment!" the officer shouted. "Bring that boy in here! Where is he?!"

Across the courtyard, Thomas was being dragged toward the isolation chamber, his voice echoing in a high-pitched, desperate plea.

"I didn't do it! I don't know how that got there! Leon, tell them! Tell them it's a mistake!" Thomas screamed, his feet skidding in the dirt as he looked toward the barracks.

Leon stood in the shadow of the doorframe, watching as Thomas’s eyes met his. There was no anger in Thomas’s gaze, only a confused, soul-crushing betrayal.

"Leon? Why aren't you saying anything?" Thomas sobbed, his voice breaking. "You know I didn't do it! Leon!"

"I'm sorry, Thomas," Leon whispered, his voice barely audible even to himself. "I have a war to win."

"[Quest: 'Commit the Sin of False Accusation' completed. Soul Capacity expansion: Initiating.]"

Leon felt the familiar, violent jolt in his chest. A surge of cold, dark energy flooded his veins, repairing the lingering damage from his burns and knitting his muscles into a tighter, more lethal configuration. He stood taller, his senses sharpening until the world felt as fragile as glass.

"He's the thief, sir!" the lead MP shouted, grabbing Thomas by the hair and slamming him against the stone wall. "Look at the fragment in his locker. He’s clearly been trying to hide it."

"No! No, I'm not! Leon, please!" Thomas shrieked, his face hitting the rough stone.

Leon didn't look away. He watched with the cold, analytical gaze of a veteran soldier. He watched the way Thomas’s nose began to bleed, the way his fingers clawed at the stone in a useless, desperate attempt to hold onto a life that was already forfeit.

"Take him to the interrogation room," the lead MP ordered. "If he doesn't confess by morning, the Commander has authorized the lash. Treason is a death sentence here, boy."

"I'm innocent!" Thomas wailed as he was dragged away into the dark bowels of the keep.

Leon turned his back on the scene, walking slowly back toward his own cot. The System’s voice was the only sound in his head, cold and satisfied.

"[New Stat Points available: 20. Would you like to allocate them now, host?]"

"Yes," Leon replied, his voice devoid of all emotion. "Put them all into Strength. I need to be ready for what comes next."

He lay down on his cot, staring up at the dark wooden beams above. He could hear the faint, muffled screams coming from the isolation chamber. Each one was like a nail being driven into his conscience, but he felt nothing—no guilt, no hesitation. Only the cold, sharp promise of the power he had purchased.

"Ares," Leon whispered into the dark. "Every sin I commit is a blade aimed at your throat. Don't worry. I’m coming for you."

Outside, the wind picked up, howling through the narrow alleys of the garrison like a dying ghost. Leon closed his eyes, the darkness of the room feeling like the only true home he had left. He was no longer the boy who had once trembled in his bed. He was something else entirely, forged in the fires of a future that had already failed him. And he would let the world burn to ash if it meant he could stand at the end of it, the only one left alive.

  • Framing the Innocent

The heavy iron door of the barracks slammed shut, leaving Leon alone with the silence. The muffled cries of Thomas being dragged down the corridor toward the isolation chambers grew fainter, finally swallowed by the thick stone walls."He's screaming my name, System. Why is it so quiet in here?" Leon whispered, gripping his bed frame until his knuckles turned white."[Host, focus. The soul capacity expansion is initiating. Do not lose your grip on reality,]" the voice responded, indifferent to the suffering outside."Reality? My reality is being rewritten by a god-complex machine," Leon muttered, his teeth gritting together as the sensation of boiling lead poured into his veins. "Did I just trade a boy's life for a few more points in my status bar?""[You traded a variable for a constant. The power you are receiving is permanent. The boy was temporary.]""Cold. You really are just a piece of programming, aren't you?" Leon gasped, falling to his knees as a surge of violet lightning dan

"How much further, System?" Leon whispered, his voice barely a breath in the chill night air as his boots lightly touched the gravel below Kael's office window."Answering. "The ambient magic density there is exceptionally low, minimizing the risk of detection during the limit break sequence.""Good," Leon muttered, pulling his hood over his face and pressing into the deep shadows of the armory wall.
