The air inside the North Tower felt different. It was no longer biting cold; it was still and heavy, charged with the lingering hum of the void-energy Adam had shared with Catherine.
Adam sat on the floor, his breathing shallow. His body felt like an empty, scorched vessel. But inside his mind, the system was busy.
[Integration: 25% complete.]
[New Skill Unlocked: Shadow Step.] [Description: Consume a small amount of mana to step into a shadow and emerge from another within range.] [Reward: Ancient Vault Card unlocked.]A notification box blinked in the air before his eyes. A small, black card, seemingly carved from obsidian, floated into his hand. It felt cold and weighted with power.
"You should rest," Catherine said softly. She was standing by her desk, her face calm, but her eyes held a new, intense focus. She looked at him not as a servant, but as something precious. "The Academy will be watching you now. You have shifted the balance, Adam."
"I don't need rest," Adam said, his voice stronger than it had been a moment ago. He felt a dark hunger deep in his gut—not for food, but for strength. "I need to get ready."
He didn't wait for her permission. He used the Shadow Step.
The air around him warped, stretching like taffy before snapping back. He felt his physical body dissolve into cold, dark smoke. In a blink, he was in his cramped, damp basement room. The shadow he had entered in the tower poured him out into the corner of his room. He was exhausted, but he was home.
He looked at his reflection in a cracked, dirty mirror. He was still wearing the same navy-blue suit, stained with wine and mud. He looked like a beggar. He gripped the obsidian card.
"System," he whispered. "Show me what this card can buy."
[Accessing Ancient Vault...]
[Wealth: Unlimited access to the Void Treasury.]A list of items appeared. They were not modern mage-tools; they were relics of an age when mages were kings. Adam didn't waste time on armor or weapons. He chose a long, charcoal-black coat made of woven shadows and a set of simple, sturdy boots that made no sound when he walked. Then, he selected a belt that looked plain but held an internal storage space the size of a room.
He didn't just need clothes. He needed to be invisible.
An hour later, Adam stood in the Academy’s high-end mall. It was a place where rich students spent their parents' gold on glowing robes and enchanted rings. The lights were bright, and the air smelled of perfume and expensive mana-incense.
Adam, now dressed in his new black coat, walked with a quiet, dangerous grace. He looked like a shadow in the bright room. People moved out of his way without knowing why.
He walked into the 'Jewel of the Sun,' the most expensive shop in the mall.
At the counter, a girl with hair as bright as a summer meadow was arguing with a shopkeeper.
"I told you," the girl said, her voice sharp. "I need that Fire-Ruby. My graduation ceremony is tomorrow! I need the mana boost!"
Adam stopped. It was Emily.
She looked perfect, as always. Her lavender dress glowed, and a gold chain sparkled at her neck. But her eyes were frantic. She was desperate.
"I’m sorry, Lady Emily," the shopkeeper said, bowing. "But this ruby is reserved for Master Julian. It is a one-of-a-kind stone."
Emily’s face turned red. "I don't care! I have the credits, just name the price!"
Adam walked up behind her. He didn't say a word. He simply placed the obsidian card on the glass counter.
The shopkeeper’s eyes widened. He touched the card, and his face went white. He looked at Adam, then back at the card, his hands shaking.
"Sir," the shopkeeper whispered, bowing so low his nose nearly touched the counter. "How... how may I serve you?"
"Everything," Adam said. His voice was cold, echoing the deep rumble he had used in the tower. "I want every single Fire-Ruby in this shop. And I want them in a bag now."
Emily spun around. She gasped when she saw him. "Adam? You? What are you doing here? You're a—"
"A Null?" Adam interrupted. He didn't even look at her. He looked at the shopkeeper. "Well?"
The shopkeeper scrambled. He pulled out box after box, filled with glowing, orange rubies. Each stone was worth more than a normal student earned in a year.
Emily stared, her mouth slightly open. "You... you can't afford those. That’s hundreds of thousands of credits!"
Adam reached out and touched the pile of rubies. He grabbed a handful of them. He didn't put them in a pouch. He squeezed his fist.
A sound like cracking glass filled the store. He opened his hand. The beautiful, expensive rubies were nothing but fine, orange dust.
Emily shrieked. "What are you doing?! You're destroying them!"
Adam turned to her. His eyes were not the brown eyes she remembered. They were dark, endless, and cold. He felt no love, no anger, no pain. He felt only the void.
"They aren't destroyers," Adam said, his voice flat. "They’re food."
He reached for the next box, crushing the rubies one by one. The air in the shop began to swirl with heat as he absorbed the mana from the stones. He was training his void-circuit to hold more. He was growing.
"You're... you're a monster," Emily whispered, backing away.
"No," Adam said, turning back to the shopkeeper. "I'm just a student who needed a supply run."
He picked up the last of the stones. He felt the system hum inside him. His mana capacity grew. 10/10... 12/10... 15/10. He was becoming something else.
Suddenly, the front door of the shop exploded inward.
Dust filled the air. A tall, handsome man stepped through the smoke, his charcoal suit perfect, his golden lion badge shining.
Julian Martinez.
He stopped, his eyes landing on the pile of crushed dust on the counter, then on Adam. His face was a mask of pure, violent rage.
"Cook," Julian growled.
The shop went dead silent. The other students in the mall froze, watching the scene.
"You think you can play games with me?" Julian stepped forward. His hands began to glow with a sharp, white light. "You think you can walk around with my property? You think you can act like you own the place because you’re hiding behind Catherine’s skirt?"
Adam stood still. He wiped the orange dust from his hands. "I don't hide, Julian. I just adapt."
Julian laughed—a sharp, ugly sound. "I saw the Inquisition guards. I know you weren't arrested. I know you're hiding something. But you're still a Null, Adam. A little bit of glow doesn't make you a mage."
Julian raised his hand. The air around him crackled with power.
"Arena. Tonight," Julian demanded, pointing a finger at Adam’s chest. "A Duel of Honor. If you don't show up, I will see to it that you are scrubbed from this Academy’s records forever. And then, I will make sure you disappear."
Adam looked at him. He didn't feel afraid. He didn't feel small. He felt the void pulsing in his veins, hungry for more.
"One duel," Adam said, his voice calm. "But if I win, Julian, you and your 'Clan' stay away from me. Forever."
Julian sneered. "If you win? You’re dead before the first light hits the floor, Null."
Julian turned and walked away, his steps shaking the floor. Emily stood there, looking between them, her face pale. She didn't know the boy in front of her. She only knew he had just challenged the most dangerous heir in the kingdom to a fight to the death.
Adam turned toward the door.
[New Mission: Survival of the Fittest.]
[Objective: Defeat Julian Martinez in the Arena.] [Time Remaining: 12 Hours.] [Penalty for Failure: Soul Eradication.]Adam walked into the shadows of the mall corridor, and as he walked, he vanished into the darkness, leaving only a faint scent of cold, ozone air behind.
He was going to the arena. And he was going to break the kingdom’s golden boy into dust.

The broken pieces of the heavy wooden door lay on the cold stone floor. The medical ward was completely silent.High Inquisitor Malphas stood in the ruined doorway. He was a man who had fought in a hundred magical wars. He had killed rogue mages, dark witches, and giant beasts. He wore the thickest, strongest holy armor in the entire kingdom. But right now, his hands were shaking.Malphas looked at the boy sitting on the edge of the broken bed. Adam Cook did not have a weapon. He was not wearing armor. He was bare-chested, wearing only simple dark pants.Yet, Malphas felt a terrible, crushing weight pressing down on his chest. It was not a spell. Adam was not doing anything. The heavy pressure was just coming from Adam’s simple presence."I think," Adam whispered again, his voice echoing inside Malphas’s brain, "you are going to have to fix the door."Malphas opened his mouth to speak, but his throat was perfectly dry. He wanted to raise his heavy silver broadsword. He wanted to sho

Catherine closed her eyes. She reached deep into her own magical core. She did not pull out normal ice magic. Normal ice magic would just melt against the extreme heat of the Moon-Shard explosion and the Holy Smite. She pulled out something much deeper. She pulled out her bloodline's secret. "Primordial Frost," Catherine whispered.A blinding, pure blue light erupted from her hands. It was not just cold. It was the complete absence of heat. It was the magic of the frozen end of the world. Primordial Frost did not just freeze water. It froze energy. It froze time itself."I am going to build a dam," Catherine told the unconscious boy. "The energy inside you is leaking. It is a flood. I am going to freeze the flood. I will hold the chaotic energy back. You just have to rebuild the walls. Do you hear me? The terrible, pitch-black cloud over the arena did not last long. For one single, terrifying moment, Adam Cook had held Julian Martinez by the throat. Adam’s eyes had glowed with the power of a dark god. He had stopped the holy fire. He had controlled the eclipse. But a human body is still made of flesh and bone. The Eternal Sovereign System had removed the safety limits to save Adam’s life. Julian did not listen. He did not care about his own life. The Seraph only cared about destroying the darkness."I will purify you," Julian commanded. He raised his hand toward the sky. He looked up at the bright blue sky.“I wanted to be a King,” Adam thought slowly. His brain was shutting down. “I promised myself I would never be on the ground again. But here I am. In the mud.
