"Oh! You are here? I can't believe you are still waiting and witnessing the wedding" Ana's mom brought Desmond back from his thoughts.

He stood up and wiped his tears.

"Mom, what did I do to deserve this? You should have told me about this beforehand instead of wasting my time and energy. I didn't deserve to be treated like this?" He lamented with his broken voice.

"Firstly, I'm no longer 'that mom' that you used to call me. I have a name and that's Maya. I'm sure you are fully aware of that" she Answered, emphasizing on the word 'mom'

"Secondly, I thought you were wiser enough to notice the movement between my daughter and your uncle but you ended up being a dummy. I don't want my daughter to get married to a dumb person like you" she added, then adjusted her eyes shade.

"Thirdly, your uncle is ten times richer than you. Hr might be old but age doesn't matter. You might not get to his position in the next twenty years and my daughter needs someone that will take care of her bills without laying a complaint. Your suit is just two hundred dollars and you got my daughter a wedding gown of three hundred dollars? Can you imagine! My daughter was at an average wedding with just twenty people present? Well, we sent another message to your guests, notifying them that the wedding has been canceled but you were too busy to notice that. My daughter deserves better" she uttered, scoffing as she kept glaring at Desmond with a disdainful look.

"Who is he?" A woman, who was Maya's friend, approached them and asked.

"A loser that is just dumb by my beautiful daughter" Maya proudly replied to her.

"Oh, he is too handsome to be a loser. I think he should work harder" the woman replied with grins on her lips and finally left with Maya

Desmond was dumbfounded, he couldn't believe his ears. Was he a loser? His uncle was rich because he was a senior doctor and has been working for more than twenty five years! Desmond just started working eighteen months ago and he was expected to have such a huge amount of money?

"You can let him in, the wedding is over. It's time for merriment" Maya shoot him an annoyingly looks and went back to the hall

Out of Curiosity, with the mindset that he needed to ask Ana the reason for her action, he sluggishly entered.

Upon sighting him, both Uncle and Ana bursted into laughter and walked forward to meet him.

"Are you here to congratulate or to create a chao?" Ana asked, more like mocking him.

"He won't dare to create chaos unless he wants to stop working under me. Anyways, thanks for bringing Ana into my life and for the money that you spent on this wedding preparation, consider it as payment made for staying with this beauty for two years" his uncle, Josh smirked.

"Congratulations on your wedding ceremony. I'm only hurt that you did this while I was happy about me getting married today. I had no idea the uncle, whom I trusted much would betray me and you, whom I picked up from the street, clothe you and feed you for two years, even paid your family house rent with the little I was getting as a resident doctor. I starved myself and deprived myself of good things because you needed to be good, I feel ashamed of getting paid with this betrayal. Well, you did me a great job by letting me realize that you ain't worth to spend my lifetime with" he uttered bitterly, threatening to fight the tears that have accumulated on his eyebrows.

"You ain't the one that also sacrifices for someone. I also did! Bringing you out of your smelly village when your mother died and you had no one is also a huge sacrifice for me. Just think of this as a way of paying back my good deeds. If you may excuse us, I'll need to greet my visitors with my newly wedded wife" uncle Josh answered him, feeling no remorse.

Creating a scene there Wouldn't favor Desmond as the visitors were of high classes and he could easily be dealt with.

Feeling embarrassed and angry at himself but not being able to do anything and had no hint of when his uncle was already dating his fiance, he left in shame.

"Darling, I think we did a good job of keeping him busy with the surgery and the bouquet but I'm worried, you know Desmond is a silent fighter. Ain't it gonna backfire on us when we least expect it?" With worries noticeable in her voice, Ana asked Josh.

"Worry not my darling wife, I have everything under control" Josh smirked.

★★★

Sitting on the floor of his sitting room, gulping down from the bottle of beer that he was holding, Desmond couldn't control his tears.

He was crying like a day old baby. His heart was shattered and the one thing that could console him was alcohol.

Suddenly, his phone started ringing and upon checking the identity, it was a call from the hospital.

"What!" He exclaimed after picking the call and immediately dropped the beer bottle.

He picked his suit and his car keys, then dashed out of the living room.

After fifteen minutes of rough driving, he arrived at the hospital, panting heavily.

He went straight to the ICU but when he arrived at the entrance, the patient's guardian rushed to him and grabbed him by his collar.

"Why did you leave my husband alone after the surgery? I was told the surgery was successful but what happened? Why did you deceive me? My husband is my everything, what did we do to deserve this?" The middle aged woman was crying and created a scene that attracted other passersby.

Desmond was confused, he was sure that everything was perfect before he left.

"Where the heck did he go wrong? It was just an appendix surgery and even a resident doctor could easily do it" he thought.

"Desmond Maxwell, you are to go to the conference room now!" A colleague of his approached him and instructed.

Still confused, he managed his way into the conference room.

The hospital boards of directors were already there, the CEO and other senior doctors which included his uncle.

"Why did you leave the hospital instead of staying with the patient till he wakes up? Don't you know you have to monitor his health status?" The CEO questioned Angrily with his voice echoing in the conference room.

Before Desmond could answer, his uncle interrupted him, giving him no chance to talk.

"Where are you still asking that question? Is it not obvious that he rushed outside for fun? Can't you see how he reeks of alcohol? He was on duty and left his newly operated patient to have fun, is that not a great offense under the medical law? Now, the guardian is about to sue him and the hospital for their negligence! I can't blame her though, her husband went into a coma and was almost brain dead with no tangible time of waking up. He might not even make It. I don't think we should cover up for a doctor that chooses fun over his work. Let him be punished according to the medical rules"

Desmond lost it! He couldn't control the tears from Falling. It was obvious that his uncle was at the verge of ruining him. He was not allowed to check on the patient nor was he allowed to defend himself. The heartbreak wasn't foreseen. He thought his beloved uncle loved him. Why did he suddenly change?

"I agree with what Dr.Josh said. Keeping him with us will bring up nothing but a downfall. You are here by sacked and the hospital will do nothing to stop the trail. Go and serve for punishment. All the best" the CEO finalized the meeting and vacated the room.

Desmond fell on his buttock, looking confused.

The doctor opened again, revealing two cops.

"Mr Desmond Maxwell, you are here arrested for negligence at work" one of the cops uttered.

"W-wh-what!" He was dumbfounded.

Everything was faster than he thought. No one would ever imagine that Dr.Desmond could be in such a position in the previous Twenty four hours.

The cops weren't gentle on him according to the instructions given to them.

Within a Twinkle of an eye, he has been handcuffed.

"Make sure you handle him very well. He is a criminal" his Uncle added salt to his wound as he instructed the cops, smirking at the same time.

"Uncle!" He cried out.

The morning after Selene's visit, Desmond arrived at the laboratory before sunrise.Researchers moved between workstations carrying trays of dried herbs. Extraction units hummed steadily in one section of the building. The sharp scent of crushed leaves and medicinal roots lingered in the air.For a few minutes, Desmond enjoyed the quiet, then his office door opened. Dr. Paige entered carrying a tablet. She looked too tired to greet him and that alone was enough warning."Morning, Dr. Paige"She placed the tablet on the table with a little more force than necessary.“ There is nothing good about the morning, Don”.“ Wow!, that's harsh”Paige ignored Desmond's dramatic expression, then she pulled out a chair and sat down."I spent half the night reviewing inventory reports. If anyone says good morning to me right now, I might become violent.""Is it that serious?", Desmond asked“ It's worse”, she answered as she slid the tablet across the table.Desmond picked it up, and the smile on h

  • The Midnight clinic 2

A nurse led Selene through the underground corridor. The deeper they went, the more questions formed in her mind. The facility was too organized to be temporary. It was too well staffed and too well supplied.People moved with the familiarity of those who had been working there for some time. Eventually, the nurse stopped outside an office."Mr. Liam is inside""Thank you", Selene said. She knocked once, "Come in"Desmond glanced at her with a straight face, "Dr. Selene""Mr. Liam"The door closed behind her. For a few seconds, neither spoke, then Selene took a seat."I just had a conversation with your friend outside"Desmond nodded, "I assumed you would""He told me this facility is connected to the cartel"There was no point dancing around it, so Desmond decided to come out clean."Yes"Selene watched him carefully, "What exactly does that mean?""It means the people funding this place aren't saints"The answer didn't satisfy her, "I don't think that's what it means""No, It doesn'

  • The Midnight clinic 1

The investigation continued even after the Ministry cleared the clinics. The public pressure had eased, but inside the operations room, nobody was celebrating.Analysts stayed at their desks through the day and often deep into the night. Every financial trail they followed opened into something larger than the last. Every company led to another intermediary, and then another, until the structure stopped looking like a chain and started looking like a web that had no clear edge.Three days after the clearance announcement, Scorpion didn’t show up for the strategy meeting.Ezra noticed first, but he didn’t say anything right away. When Scorpion missed the second meeting, Ezra finally spoke, “That’s twice now, he is acting suspicious” Desmond gave a quiet chuckle, “ Every one of his actions is always suspicious. Maybe it's related to his company anyways”Ezra shrugged, but the concern stayed with him. By the next day, he finally called him."Where are you?", Ezra asked."I'm busy", Scor

  • The Point of Corrections

Desmond finally understood the pattern. The headlines, the fake medication, the bribed media, and the pressure on the Ministry were all part of a coordinated effort, not aimed at Liam personally but at the system he represented. His humanitarian model was disrupting powerful interests, and what they were seeing wasn’t a personal conflict or political dispute, but a coordinated pushback from an industry threatened by its success."So what now?", Scorpion uttered.Ezra pushed off the desk and straightened, "We have enough to fight back”Desmond didn't agree, “Not yet”Scorpion was also impatient, “Why?”“ None of this reaches the people who made the decision”, Desmond explained.Ezra understood first, "They’re middle layers, so they're disposable.""Exactly. So, if we go public now, they will take the fall. Every one of them. And the system keeps moving""The companies will deny it. The contractors disappear into it", Scorpion mentioned "And nothing sticks," Ezra said.Desmond looked d

  • Beyond the Clinic

The next trigger came sooner than Desmond expected. It was barely seven in the morning when Ezra walked into the office carrying a stack of reports."We found it", he suddenly announced.Desmond tore his attention away from the clinic records spread across his desk"Found what?""The break in the pattern"Scorpion left the window and walked over. Ezra placed the reports on the desk and opened the first file."Every region that experienced panic received calls from media contacts within thirty minutes of the first reports appearing"Scorpion reached for the documents, “That’s not unusual in cases like this”"It is when the same communications agency is connected to all of them"That made Desmond go still for a moment. He pulled the file closer and started reading:The first few pages contained call records. Further in were internal communications gathered overnight. The names attached to the reports changed from page to page, but the language barely did. Journalists working in differen

Reporters were already camped outside the regional clinic, pushing microphones toward anyone who looked like they might have answers. Inside, it was mostly movement without clarity; staff slip
