"Scalpel" Desmond requested, stretching his hand to collect it.

The operating room was lit and three assistants were with him.

"Forceps"

"Retractor"

"Scissors"

He was collecting them one after the other whenever the need called for it. He diverted his maximum attention to the surgery. It wasn't planned but it needed to be done to save the life of the appendix patient.

"What's his blood pressure?" He asked, as he was wrapping up the surgery.

"Normal sir," the lady among them answered.

"That's good! It was a successful surgery. Round it up and transfer him to the Intensive care unit after. Tell his guardian that he will recover within the next three days if nothing goes wrong" he instructed and glared at the clock.

His eyes widened in shock and immediately removed his hairnet.

"See you guys later"

The operating room door opened and Desmond ran out like he was being chased. He went to his office to have a change of clothes. He was sweating as he was changing clothes.

How could he be late to his wedding? He has been planning that for the past few months.

Desmond rushed out of his office and went to the car garage. He hopped inside his car and drove off.

His phone started ringing consecutively. It was Anabelle , his fiance that was calling him.

"Where are you?" Was the first question that she asked.

"On my way darling, something came up but I'll soon be there" he hurriedly answered.

"It's our wedding day! Do you have to be late again? For goodness sake! We have less than thirty minutes to start the party! I've been waiting like forever. Well, get me another bouquet on your way here, I forget mine at the dressing room" She requested then hung up the call

Stepping on the accelerator, he started driving at the speed of one hundred meters per seconds till he arrived at a very big boutique.

He parked his car and entered, going straight to meet the receptionist.

"Hi. I'm Desmond Maxwell. I have an appointment with Jerry" he introduced himself.

The receptionist checked her personal computer for a few seconds, then gestured to him to follow her inside

The man called Jerry was already waiting for him

"You are late" he voiced out

"An emergency surgery occurred and I needed to be there" Desmond answered.

Both guys shook hands before Jerry took him to the dressing room.

His preferred suit has been chosen. He only needed to wear it and Jerry would style his hair

It was his wedding day anyways, he needed to appear cuter than before.

His phone wouldn't stop ringing. At that time, it wasn't Anabelle that was calling but her mother.

"I'll be there soon, mom," he replied over the phone.

Well, he was used to calling his proposed mother in law, mom, which she also seemed to like.

"Thank you" Desmond appreciated Jerry when he was done. He did a good job in giving him a new appearance.

"Your account details" he requested, transferring the service money to Jerry.

On his way out, he branched at the bridal Section to pick a bouquet for his fiance as he requested.

Desmond Maxwell was a medical doctor at the city hospital. He wasn't rich neither was he poor, he was living on the average income that the hospital was paying him as he was a junior doctor and still studying some part time courses to improve himself. He was born into a poor family in a small village but was determined and ended up in the city, as a medical doctor.

Not only, he was still paying up the loan which he used to buy his car.

Checking himself again from the mirror, he was satisfied with his looks.

He was going to drop the bachelorhood and embrace marriage that day. He has been anticipating for the moment since he met Anabelle two years ago and it was like a dream coming through.

He arrived at the wedding venue. To his utmost surprise, there were cars parked outside the wedding hall. Not only that, the marriage seemed to be more elaborate than he had planned.

"But we only invited a few of our friends and family. I didn't have any family to invite except my uncle. Who are these people? Did Anabelle invite them or change the wedding venue and forget to inform me?" He thought as he walked closer to the hall.

He noticed the group of elites walking inside the hall.

He tried to recall their faces but obviously, he knew nothing about their identity.

His mouth was opened in agape when he saw the Wedding decorations.

Obviously, he can't afford such a decoration. It must have been decorated by one of the best event decorators in the city.

He stopped at the entrance of the halls, calling his bride to be again. With what he saw, he was sure that it wasn't their wedding.

The phone rang twice but Anabelle refused to pick the call.

“She is probably busy, let me call mom” he thought, calling her mom but same response.

Desmond was still standing outside the hall, holding the bouquet when he sighted a wedding banner

He didn't know when his legs moved closer to the banner. It was pictures of his wife and only uncle that were there, along with their names.

His body began trembling immediately, sending chills all over his body.

The bouquet fell from his hand. He couldn't believe what he just saw.

"No, this can't be true. Something must have been wrong with my eyes" he murmured, cleaning his eyes repeatedly with his white handkerchief , hoping he had sight issues but all wrong.

The pictures were real, likewise the names. The couple pose in a romantic way, smiling like people in love.

"Where did I go wrong? Anabelle spent the night with me last night, planning this wedding together with me. My uncle also had dinner with us and gave us a heavy envelope as a wedding gift. Could this be planned all along? Am I hallucinating now? Why would my uncle marry my fiance and vice versa? He is old enough to be her father! His first son was just two years younger than Anabelle!" He thought as tears accumulated on his eyes lashes, threatening to fall down but he sniffed then back in

He needed to check with his two eyes! It might not be his fiance!

He was doubting and confusion was written all over his face.

He went to enter the wedding hall but was stopped by a bouncer that was standing gallantly at the entrance.

"Can I see your invitation card?" The bouncer asked.

"Invitation?" Desmond repeated the same thing, seeming to be lost with the word "invitation".

"This wedding is strictly by invitation, I'll advise you to leave if you weren't invited" The man added.

“Strictly by invitation? Is that what uncle Josh and Ana are upto?”

Staring at the hefty man that was standing opposite him, Desmond knew he had no chance with him.

Proving to be stubborn will earn him nothing but a beating.

He only tried to take a glimpse to see the inner side of the wedding hall through the opened window.

"I, Anabelle Dickson, accept to marry Josh Williams as my lawfully wedded husband…"

He heard Anabelle taking her marriage vows and that alone has answered his curiosity.

Upon hearing that, he fell on his buttock, still in astonishment. He managed to loosen his tie, to prevent getting choked.

"Why would she plan a wedding with me and get married to my uncle?" He murmured, asking no one in particular as he was shocked.

“I spent my entire savings, planning this wedding with her. How could two people I trusted most do this to me?”

“I hereby pronounce Anabelle Dickson and Josh Williams as husband and wife…”

The marriage was finalized after taking the vows.

In shock, he managed to stand back on his feet when he saw Ana's mom walking outside the hall dressing exquisite with smirks noticeable on her lips

"My daughter's ex Fiance" she called and his jaw fell in shock!

  • The Rules of the Shadow Healing

The morning after Selene's visit, Desmond arrived at the laboratory before sunrise.Researchers moved between workstations carrying trays of dried herbs. Extraction units hummed steadily in one section of the building. The sharp scent of crushed leaves and medicinal roots lingered in the air.For a few minutes, Desmond enjoyed the quiet, then his office door opened. Dr. Paige entered carrying a tablet. She looked too tired to greet him and that alone was enough warning."Morning, Dr. Paige"She placed the tablet on the table with a little more force than necessary.“ There is nothing good about the morning, Don”.“ Wow!, that's harsh”Paige ignored Desmond's dramatic expression, then she pulled out a chair and sat down."I spent half the night reviewing inventory reports. If anyone says good morning to me right now, I might become violent.""Is it that serious?", Desmond asked“ It's worse”, she answered as she slid the tablet across the table.Desmond picked it up, and the smile on h

  • The Midnight clinic 2

A nurse led Selene through the underground corridor. The deeper they went, the more questions formed in her mind. The facility was too organized to be temporary. It was too well staffed and too well supplied.People moved with the familiarity of those who had been working there for some time. Eventually, the nurse stopped outside an office."Mr. Liam is inside""Thank you", Selene said. She knocked once, "Come in"Desmond glanced at her with a straight face, "Dr. Selene""Mr. Liam"The door closed behind her. For a few seconds, neither spoke, then Selene took a seat."I just had a conversation with your friend outside"Desmond nodded, "I assumed you would""He told me this facility is connected to the cartel"There was no point dancing around it, so Desmond decided to come out clean."Yes"Selene watched him carefully, "What exactly does that mean?""It means the people funding this place aren't saints"The answer didn't satisfy her, "I don't think that's what it means""No, It doesn'

  • The Midnight clinic 1

The investigation continued even after the Ministry cleared the clinics. The public pressure had eased, but inside the operations room, nobody was celebrating.Analysts stayed at their desks through the day and often deep into the night. Every financial trail they followed opened into something larger than the last. Every company led to another intermediary, and then another, until the structure stopped looking like a chain and started looking like a web that had no clear edge.Three days after the clearance announcement, Scorpion didn’t show up for the strategy meeting.Ezra noticed first, but he didn’t say anything right away. When Scorpion missed the second meeting, Ezra finally spoke, “That’s twice now, he is acting suspicious” Desmond gave a quiet chuckle, “ Every one of his actions is always suspicious. Maybe it's related to his company anyways”Ezra shrugged, but the concern stayed with him. By the next day, he finally called him."Where are you?", Ezra asked."I'm busy", Scor

  • The Point of Corrections

Desmond finally understood the pattern. The headlines, the fake medication, the bribed media, and the pressure on the Ministry were all part of a coordinated effort, not aimed at Liam personally but at the system he represented. His humanitarian model was disrupting powerful interests, and what they were seeing wasn’t a personal conflict or political dispute, but a coordinated pushback from an industry threatened by its success."So what now?", Scorpion uttered.Ezra pushed off the desk and straightened, "We have enough to fight back”Desmond didn't agree, “Not yet”Scorpion was also impatient, “Why?”“ None of this reaches the people who made the decision”, Desmond explained.Ezra understood first, "They’re middle layers, so they're disposable.""Exactly. So, if we go public now, they will take the fall. Every one of them. And the system keeps moving""The companies will deny it. The contractors disappear into it", Scorpion mentioned "And nothing sticks," Ezra said.Desmond looked d

  • Beyond the Clinic

The next trigger came sooner than Desmond expected. It was barely seven in the morning when Ezra walked into the office carrying a stack of reports."We found it", he suddenly announced.Desmond tore his attention away from the clinic records spread across his desk"Found what?""The break in the pattern"Scorpion left the window and walked over. Ezra placed the reports on the desk and opened the first file."Every region that experienced panic received calls from media contacts within thirty minutes of the first reports appearing"Scorpion reached for the documents, “That’s not unusual in cases like this”"It is when the same communications agency is connected to all of them"That made Desmond go still for a moment. He pulled the file closer and started reading:The first few pages contained call records. Further in were internal communications gathered overnight. The names attached to the reports changed from page to page, but the language barely did. Journalists working in differen

  • The First Casualty

“Are you telling me a child is dead because of Liam Andrew's treatment system?”“I'm telling you that's what the reports currently say”“Reports from who?” one analyst asked immediately. “The hospital hasn't released a final statement”“A child is dead,” another replied. “Are we supposed to ignore that?”“Nobody is ignoring it”“Then stop acting like people don't have a right to be angry”“Being angry and assigning blame are two different things”The host tried to intervene, “Gentlemen….”“No, because this is exactly the problem.”“The problem is that everyone wants a verdict before an investigation.”The argument rolled on while the headline remained fixed at the bottom of the screen.HOLISTIC TREATMENT UNDER INVESTIGATION AFTER CHILD DEATHBy afternoon, the story had spread across the country. Reporters were already camped outside the regional clinic, pushing microphones toward anyone who looked like they might have answers. Inside, it was mostly movement without clarity; staff slip
